Gut Reactions: Packers beat Giants

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers win over the Giants.

  • I love Za'Darius Smith
  • Do they practice offense in Green Bay? Or just show up and say "Throw it deep, Aaron..."
  • Which is to say...the Packers offense is hard to watch at the moment.
  • Matt LaFleur has no feel as a playcaller right now. None.
  • Tough game for the offensive line trying to get anything going in the run game.
  • What a play by Tramon Williams
  • JK Scott. He's back.
  • Jamaal Williams trucking people and wanting more while his team is up big in the 4th quarter is a whole mood.
  • Sooooooooooooooooooo close on the Vitale wheel route.
  • Another up and down game for Kevin King, but damn that pick was sweet.
  • I want to thank both King and Darnell Savage for holding on to their interceptions.
  • Nice game from Geronimo Allison.
  • Love that Big Dog got a TD.
  • I understand fans being upset that the Packers didn't just waltz through this game, but that's the NFL. You have to earn it.
  • TBLS in victory formation. Love it.
  • Love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.

Packers D was still giving you too much and couldn’t get off the field on 3 rd down , chalk it up to sloppy field? Still a good road win.

Incorrect. They couldn't get off of the field on 4th down. But when your opponent routinely gets down to 3rd and short, and you stop them, only to have them come back and sneak it on 4th and 1, it takes its toll on the defense. They were something to the tune of 5-14 on third down. That's a respectable number.

It means that Rodgers didn't play well last week or against the Chargers. But then again neither did the rest of the team.

As for carrying the team, Rodgers has not had to do that as much this season. He has been helped by his RBs and by the defense. However, the OL and the receiving corps has been inconsistent. Even Davante Adams and Aaron Jones dropped passes today. Fortunately it didn't matter. On the positive side Allison held on to a few today. MVS was MIA again.

They put up a graphic during today's game that the Packers average 3rd down yardage this season has been 3rd and 8.2 yards!!! That's a pretty sobering stat. It means the Packers have had plenty of 3rd downs with longer yardage than 8.2. This tells me that the Packers OL has not been very good on 1st and 2nd down and also that the Packers are beating themselves with penalties.

No QB is going to carry the team very far with that situation. Especially when the defense can easily double up on our only legit WR (Adams) and key on our best RB (Jones). The defense can blitz and force the QB to move off his spot and/or to hurry his throw. Fortunately, Rodgers plays smart enough to not make bad decisions with the football. He may not be carrying the team the way he did from 2012 to his injury in 2017 but he is still playing very smart football and not hurting the team while his RBs and defense are capable of carrying their share. Almost forgot to mention that even with all the criticism heaped at Rodgers his passer rating is over 100.0 for the season including a 125+ for today. Thanks, Since '61

You're absolutely right. But there's still things we see that are maddening. Packers are clearly the better team but at the end of the 2nd quarter, when the Giants are closing in, AR12 goes to the 2 minutes offense with no flow, no fire in his eyes and no sense of urgency. Enough to beat the 2-9 Giants but against a good team, might cost you the W.

Final score about what we'd hope for. A bounce back win against a bad team they should beat and beat handily after getting their heads handed to them by the 9ers. We've seen this each time this season, which bodes well for the makeup of this team. Forcing TOs is a good thing.

Washington currently beating Carolina in Carolina, but it's another game they should win handily next week.

Since the Packers were one of the bad teams the last two seasons, it's good to be now beating the bad teams, and even when not at our best.

He also plays about 80% of our snaps on defense......apparently, the coaches who get paid good money to figure these things out aren't smart enough to know they should just get rid of this guy before his contract is up.

Lots of really ignorant comments today. More than normal.

Can't tell much from sloppy conditions but if Giants could hold their D line, that means our O couldn't create any holes - and it showed. Giants looked at the recent tape and saw that GB can't beat pressure. They don't have the manpower to do it but they seemed to always be close. Some really bad throws by NY. What would score have been without the INT's? Even though the score showed a fairly big win, it didn't feel like it.

WestWi_Packfan I have not seen you post here before so obviously I am not referring to you or your post(s). There are a few posters who vehemently don't like Rodgers. I'll say it that way rather than use the word hate.

During today's game they put up a graphic which showed that the Packers average 3rd down yardage this season has been 3rd and 8.2 yards. Those types of 3rd downs are difficult to convert whoever the QB is. That stat tells me that the Packers OL has not been very good on 1st and 2nd down and that we are hurting ourselves with penalties on offense. We saw some of that again during today's game but Rodgers was able to overcome some of those situations with a 3rd down throw to Allison while he had defenders hanging off of him and a perfect 3rd down TD strike to Adams in the second half. He also made a nice 3rd down throw on an about pattern to Allison.

The point is that Rodgers has been up and down this season but he is still playing smart football and not making bad decisions with the football. He play has not hurt the team or cost the team a game. The losses to the Chargers and 49ers were bad team losses and not just on Rodgers. The Eagles game was a desperate team and poor execution in the redzone. Even with all the vehemence and calumny heaped upon Rodgers so far this season he has a QB rating over 100.0 including a 125+ QBR today. 9-3 and 1st in our division, I'll take it for now. Thanks, Since '61

No game is a gimme in the NFL, you have to win them all.
Look at the Dolphins taking it to the Eagles. Even the Bengals finally win a game.
As a bonus the 9ers lost, that might help a bit later in the season.

Hey, we're not playing perfect football but we're 9-3 and top of our division, just enjoy it.

If we hop over to an Eagles fan site can read how Carson Wentz' window for a second Super Bowl has been wasted by Doug Pederson and Jim Schwartz inept coaching. Maybe if Jason Peter lost weight he could play tight end? They should have brough in Antonio Brown! Someone needs to dock their pay and light a fire under Jim Schwartz because this Eagles team blows!

IDK. I never thought much of Lazard, but I had/have hopes for Tonyan. If we're doing superstition here, I don't know which attitude to take towards Tonyan!

A win is always good in the NFL. I didn't take a lot away from this game. The Giants' DL is very stout and we had some trouble running up the middle. Better off tackle or wide. Expected. Jamaal ran really hard. He definitely belongs in the NFL. Happy that Adams and Lazard took advantage of a pretty terrible secondary that is matched to a stout DL that gets some push but ultimately lacks juice (just 2 QB hits - some pressure though). No pass rushers in the LB corps. Disappointed that MVS and Kumerow couldn't do any damage, though I didn't see Kumerow. GB again had a big-play offense that lacks consistency. I'd like to see Lazard have the big plays, yes, but paired with some chain-moving moderate receptions.

No superstition here, TGR, just good-natured ribbing.
As the Badgers showed yesterday, one way to beat the run is with a creative passing game, including a middle-screen to a tight end, and getting running backs involved as pass catchers. Plus, I love those end-arounds.
It seems important to realize, or remember, that being committed to the run game doesn't mean just getting stuffed on handoffs between the tackles again and again and again. If the defense is stacked up against the run, then a short passing game can take the place of the running game to a great extent. Instead of running into a wall repeatedly, go over it, or around.
Even if the results don't show it yet, I hope the Packers are in the process of honing a kind of short passing array (including the utilization of Lazard to move the chains) as adapted to the pro game.

There's a reason he's not playing ahead of Graham. Graham is overpaid, imo, but that's on Gutekunst and football outsiders.com ranks Graham 10th in DVOA long TEs. He's a starting caliber TE in this league, and Tonyan isnt.

GVPacker - First I'm going to make the assumption that the Packers OL reaches the playoffs healthy. That is one key factor to answer your question. The second key factor is where the Packers end up in terms of playoff seeding. I believe that if they can get a bye and play at Lambeau they can make a deep playoff run.

The entire team including the OL play better at home than they usually do on the road. Now they could end up with the #3 seed and get a home game for the wildcard round. That would they would go on the road to either New Orleans, Seattle or SF as I'm assuming that 2 of those 3 would be the 1 and 2 seeds. As of today I don't think the Packers OL can go on the road and hold off those DLs. Maybe against Seattle but not SF or NO. Even if they did win at Seattle they would have either SF or NO on the road. Both are big hills to climb.

However, there is plenty of football between now and the post-season. Maybe the Packers become the hot team going into the playoffs. Maybe the OL comes together better than they have for most of the season. Anything is possible.

To sum up, the Packers have a good shot at a deep playoff run if they play at home. If not, I would not expect a very deep run this season. But I would never count them out either. Thanks, Since '61

You're right about MLF not calling the right plays now--he's not zigging when he should be zagging, and vice-versa. Very predictable and no imagination whatsoever. Did anybody see that Dolphins formation and touchdown against the Eagles? That was pretty cool.

The Packers added to their ' most in the league ' benefit of more PI's in their favor and the weekly Ref's screamers that they are against us are likely silent this week.

Winning a game they should have won is no big deal and not one to celebrate to extreme,as they still looked off and it didn't take much from the Giants to show it.

A somewhat boost in confidence for GB after an ass kicking but that kind of confidence, more false than true, gets in one's head easily.

Washington giving Carolina as much, if not more than the Packers did, so it would seem Washington will be coming to play.

On a positive personal note...my over ticket secured a push so I can now only win...cha-ching!

Do yourself a favor, review all Packers championship seasons and look at the margins of victory in each game. Winning a game you should win is a very big deal, because when it's all said and done, it's not how, it's how many.

Any win on the road is a good thing. An 18 point win where we think they didn't play so well even better.

What are you buying us with your winnings? :)

To start off, very happy about Z, very happy about the 3 picks, very happy with Rodgers making vintage throws, and of course very happy with the win.

This team, though, particularly on offense, is so infuriating to watch at times. The 3rd and 2 deep incompletion, although defensive holding netted us a first, was such a boneheaded playcall and hearkened back to the MM days. So, so many 3rd and long situations. Rodgers snapping the ball just as the play clock expires and burning time outs to avoid delay of game penalties seem to be fixtures of this offense as long as 12 is under center, sad to say. The offensive line allowed so many tackles for loss setting up those 3rd and 13's - not sure if that's on Jones, the line, or MLF's playcalling, but boy oh boy does that suck, especially against an inferior opponent.

On the defensive side, we're lucky Shurmur didn't utilize Smith more because we could not cover him. Pettine going super soft on a 4th and 5 was baffling. Z put up a ton of pressure on D. Jones and some costly mistakes turned into three interceptions. Barkley was mostly contained aside from a few solid runs. Packers fans are going to complain about every little thing even in a decisive win like this, but I've been of the opinion that consistency on the offensive side of things has been more of the problem this season than the defensive play, problematic as it has been at times. Today, the defense and the offense held up just fine, as they should against an inferior opponent. Let's repeat next week. GPG!

Good Win,Go Pack Go!
Head coach is a rookie play caller. Some of the plays had me scratching my head. Either he calls better plays or higher someone to do it.
Defense still gives up big gashes across the field. Packers should be looking to spend on o line and LB because o line needs help and Blake is not the answer.
Kevin King make too many consistent mistakes. He has been around long enough to work out these kinks. He needs to do better or he needs to be gone in the off-season.

Where did all these haters come from lately,I guess a bunch of nervous Viking fans. It must suck to lead the league in post season losses.

Random thoughts. Packers had a run game today against a very good Giants front 7. Offensive line will not get enough credit for what they did today. For the most part Rodgers ran the scheme which made his play action far more effective which led more of his WR open in the patterns. While Rodgers wants to throw deep strikes, teams are set and waiting. Run game was effective, forced Giant safety's up, gave Rodgers the extra 3 seconds he needed. Hope he gets what MLF is doing for final four. Winter Wonder Land. Ugh! Hope nobody else other than P. Smith and Gray twisted their ankles on both sides. Glad to see Bakh and Bulaga emerge clean, no replacements (yet) for either of them. Rare event, noon game. My body clock is all messed up... Yea Mason, a pro's pro. JK Scott flip the field twice... That's the NFL for you, just a half step from complete collapse. (But not today) 9-3, can you believe.... I need a (root) beer.......

At times Rodgers doesn't seem to see the guy I see open and I am just some doofus on her couch. But then that 4th down completion with his legs held - just wow.

The Packers can't run on short yardage. Having to throw on 3rd and 1 is a big disadvantage. lol

Z Smith was up in there all game long today. He was revved up.

In the NFL any time you can have a "get right game" on the road that is an awesome thing. Offense scores 30, D gets 3 turnovers - cool.

12 wins or more seems very realistic and the fan base seems to want to complain about it. Amazing.

It's really hard not to complain because the no-show in LA, the tough win against Carolina (who just dropped to Washington of all teams), and the humiliating loss to SF out of a bye week are still fresh in our minds. I'm as thrilled as anyone that we're 9-3 with a path to winning the NFC North and a first-round bye, especially given this is MLF's first year as HC, but this team can be very frustrating to watch and the weaknesses have been exposed and exploited now on multiple occasions. Can we beat elite competition down the stretch? We're justifiably concerned.

of course this team isn't going to win the Super Bowl without getting very hot in January. I guess I am comparing to the last two season's misery and everyone else is comparing to 1996 or 2010. Though of course in 2010 right about now was when half the fan base was signing off and saying see y'all next year and then look what happened.

But this was a game on the road, holding the home team to 13 points and winning by 3 scores. I will not understand the hand wringing about it.

Let's hope the Packers can continue to find ways to win games, while at the same time working to refine the offense in terms of imagination and execution.
It was so much fun yesterday to see the normally predictable Badgers open up their offense in a big win against the Gophers. After the running game was stopped cold early, the team showed a surprising array of short and long passes, with wonderful creativity and effectiveness, in a way I hope the Packers will adapt to the pro game -- utilizing a fullback named Stokke as a pass catcher the way I hope we eventually use Vitale, for example, and mixing in screens and end-arounds, and getting pass catchers matched up with linebackers for big plays.
In other words, this win is a big deal, but we still need to keep improving to avoid a horrible thud later on. At least in practices, I'm hoping Rodgers is really serious about crafting an artistic short game of precision and grace.
Maybe, like the University of Wisconsin, we'll see a much improved offense with an array of pleasant surprises when the Packers make their own trip to Minnesota in a few weeks.
I'm appreciating the moment, but let's never stop striving for better.

Arron Rodgers to the press. I had a great game plan! Bombs away! Speaking of Bombers. Danica Patrick must be the nose art. Lazard had a great game! The OL came back! Za Darious Smith is so impressive. Couldn't help but think the others just watched him go. Keep Tramon Williams on the TEs. Sign Clark!

A win is a win in this league, however I still can't help but feel this team is a few players away to actually contend and beat great teams. They have issues on offense, really couldn't run it at all, not a good sign. Still susceptible to big plays on defense. Though, they take the ball away and keep teams out of the EZ. I still like us going to BOA Stadium at 11-3. Need to get hot.

I thought the team showed character coming back from their worst loss of the season. It wasn't great but it was good enough and I'm hoping that their best football is yet to be played. Hopefully down the stretch the Defense can play like they did earlier this year and the Offense can be more consistant

Didn't get to watch much but I did see that 3rd and 1 deep shot to Davante. Come on! Snowing, wet field, on the road ,offense not clicking, move the god-damned chains Rodgers. Should never have been so closé in first half .

Is it Rodgers or is it LaFleur? Happens so often I'm beginning to believe Rodgers is overruling his coach regularly.

Pack did what they had to do. Few mistakes, took advantage of giants weaknesses. Overall good game.
Giants are in rebuild and will be a force in two years for sure. They never gave up so cudos to them too.
Ps. Two of our interceptions were our d backs playing poorly. They were in places they shouldnt have bern under petines scheme. He is a dork imo

- Rodgers missed a few open receivers. Some very nice throws while getting tackled.
- MLF play calling is hideous. Looks exactly like what he was calling in Tennessee last year and we know how that went.
- Any team can beat any team on a given day… especially when playing at their place. Was not as easy as I thought.
- Snapping the ball at 1 second left on the play clock sucks. No tempo at all.
