Gut Reactions: Packers forget to show up for second half against Colts

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers loss to the Colts.

  • Packers showed us something today
  • Hope Linsley is ok.
  • Rodgers is way too laid back when it comes to the clock but I know it will never change.
  • Low crossers killed the Packers today.
  • It's the worst when it's 3rd and 13 and you know in your soul that the Packers defense will play 15 yards off and give up a first down.
  • How many horrible coverage breakdowns can LaFleur continue to justify?
  • Packers have a decent off-season to do list and one of those things is finding a new punter.
  • That 3rd quarter was hard to watch.
  • Kenny Clark played a good game but he can't do it all.
  • Colts took advatange of Preston in coverage.
  • Thought Gary and Z did a decent job against the run in the first half.
  • Hell of a play from EQ on that WR screen.
  • Loved the tight ends getting involved.
  • Jace Sternberger's block in the open field was sick.
  • The Packers special teams has been a disaster zone.
  • I don't want to talk about Tonyan being wide open in the end zone
  • Why on Earth does this team have so much trouble regaining momentum? Once the avalanche starts, it has no ability to regain its footing.
  • That 4th and 1 call was bewildering.
  • Yes, MVS's fumble was brutal but they don't make it to overtime without him.
  • This team is turning the ball over way too much.
  • Love this team regardless.
  • Go Pack Go.

You can't turn the ball over 4x against a good team on the road and expect to win. That we were in it at the end at all speaks more to the Colts spitting the bit than anything we happened to do.

You could tell Davante wasn't right. You could tell that Lazard wasn't back 100% yet.

We were due for some fumbles. We were way below historic averages coming in. I have faith that will clean up.

BUT: this team will never stop any running attack.

MVS can't fumble like that. But we wouldn't have been there without him. So... ugh.

And then:

Fire Pettine
Fire Shepherd
Fire Preston
Fire Mennenga
Fire Kirksey
Fire Lowry

I might have to agree with you on the fire Pettine comment. I've been giving him a pass as much as I can, but that defensive scheme is troubling a lot of times.

It's also troubling watching our team struggle on 3rd and short, but then watching the other team have no problem on 3rd and short, or third and what ever

At least we didn't get blown out to a good team on the road

Is that a scheme? Playing off coverage behind the Line to Gain and it repeatedly failing and you just keep at it. That's what a scheme is?

I'm tired of hearing how we need to pay Aaron Jones. 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1, we throw the football. If your RB can't get a yd he isn't worth getting paid. Pettine needs to go. Funny these refs seen every holding in the game to call but our RB almost does a backflip with the facemask and nothing...

After that Colt’s touchdown where Preston Smith was attempting to cover the TE, I was asking myself, “Why is he covering a receiver?” Preston is too big and slow to cover such a player! I think the coach is not using him properly.

Preston was covering TE Trey Burton on that TD pass. Burton is more of a receiver than a blocking TE. It is common for ILBs to cover TEs, and lots of off-the-ball OLBs cover TEs as well.

"MVS ... we wouldn't have been there without him."

That assumes the player replacing MVS cannot beat a LBer up the seam or get deep enough to get his arm held for a massive PI gain. It also assumes that said replacement player would not be able to make contributions to keep other drives alives.

I'm not so sure I agree with those assumptions.

It just strikes me as a stretch to think MVS is the only guy that could have possibly made those plays.

A WR should be able to beat a LB. And DBs try to get away with stuff routinely.

Just remember how well Pettine did in Cleveland? Why would we or any one expect more? The NFL is the only organization that takes a loosing coach and will make him a coach somewhere else and expect different results. In the real world, we would all be unemployed.

I am/was a big fan of Shepperd. Please MLF replace him with any of the many WR's on the team. He is that nervous? He is a non-nfl player
Is Preston Smith the new Martinez? Could be. Not his fault.
Special Teams "WOW" are they playing terrible.
What's that: Wade Phillips is at the door. Come on in, Wade. See you Pettine

FY Dbacks giving away two picks
FY LaFleur on some lousy calls. I don't care how much you're up at the half. MAKEADJUSTMENTS at halftime!
FY Pettine you should have been fired games ago.
FY defense with your soft coverage and making any RB look like Walter Peyton
FY #12 for 28 2nd half minutes of nothing and a lousy pass on your last pass attempt
FY MVS, just FU again and again
FY Preston for jumping off sides again and again and again
Changed FU to FY, how's that?

Good one. Footballoutsiders.com did an analysis several years back and it went something like this:

0 turnovers = 61% win probabilty.
1 turnover. 51%
2= 42%
3=28%
4=10%

I knew when we already had two by the end of the first quarter that we were already in the hole, on the road. We beat ourselves.

Here’s the positive: This Packer team is good enough to go on the road, against a quality team, and have a chance even when it plays poorly. And we did play sloppy today. We get a chance to beat the Bears next week and go 8-3. We’re in position to win our division and get at least the #3 seed.

I would again point to my long standing opposition to returning kicks and punts. Catch the ball and put Rodgers on the field. You don’t pay him to watch bottom of the roster guys turn it over.

If you are looking at a positive from this

Gut reactions Cory and Aaron know dick about football. Blaming the offense.

Colts punted once and only because of 5 holding penalties.

Bad play calling in second half and in the red zone at end of regulation.

Hard to win with 4 turnovers.

Yeah, but AR had an incredibly clean jersey at the end of this game. Neither team put much pressure on the opposing QB. Good QBs carve up most defenses when that happens.

Neither team really got their running game humming but both got enough to provide some balance and put up a lot of points.

He is indeed the king of the bobble. Unless its dropped right into his cradled arms, and even then sometimes, he is double catching it. Not only does that increase his drop rate, it gives NFL CB's that extra second to knock it loose. The guy is a great athlete, but he is not an NFL wide out.

I’m conflicted. Part of me was saddened on that play in the first when Rashan Gary isolated Rivers on the edge. Rivers allowed himself to be that vulnerable, he deserved to be flattened.

Linsley didn’t look good. The stiff, robotic way that he was walking to the locker room, I’d say that he has a vertebral disc injury.

I was upset at the end of this game for about ten seconds, then I realized this is what this team does.. They’re up 28-14 at halftime, and piss away an easy win.. It would be more heartbreaking, if it wasn’t so pathetic and ordinary.. I haven’t seen a team that’s beat themselves more often in the history of sports than the packers.. I could mention all the horrible glaring problems with management/coaching we all see except for the homers, but it really doesn’t matter..This team will do NOTHING in the playoffs except eggszackery what happened tonight.. Call me a bad fan, not long enough of one (35 for me), whatever you must.. But you don’t let a two touchdown lead slip away only scoring 3 points in the second half against a good team like this and expect to win anything.. Down vote me homeriouses ..In gute we trust right, I think Mikey P should get an extension..;)

Your kidding me. Run it! 2nd one was even worse. I think it was with only 4 minutes left and we have a 3rd down and 1 foot. One SOBing foot and 12 passes it. On top of that, he over throws the open receiver. RUN THE DAMN BALL.

Very difficult watching the second half. This team inexplicably stops playing for long periods of games on both sides of the ball. The defense doesn’t pick up the offense and vice-versa. Then the STs chip in with their share of mistakes.

It’s like a different team came out to play the second half. Coaching needs to figure this out. #1 seed goes to the Saints for now. Bring on DA Bears. Thanks, Since ‘61

Lowry is worthless in the 2 man front . It is mystifying why he gets those snaps rendering Clark useless, yet that is what Pettine opted. Winn should be getting those early snaps. The philosophy of salary is greater than performance has to end if this team is more than one and done. The coaches have to override the front office.

Brees has 11 broken ribs and a collapsed lung. Just went on IR. Incredibly, at least to me, the pundits suggest he might miss only a few games. Anyway, Brees is on IR.

NO will have to win games with Tysom Hill or Jameis Winston at QB. Of course, NO won with Hill at QB. He was efficient and threw for 238 yards and ran for 51 more. NO had 11 QB hits and 8 sacks on Matt Ryan, so the Saints easily beat a bad Falcons team.

Need a punter now , this is a one and done team in the playoffs , the defense continues to play so far off the ball and again ,2 D lineman in against the run? Great contribution from our draft picks again.

It's a good loss if we fire Pettine for demoralizing the whole team!
To be so passive and predictable on defense -- by rarely, if ever, blitzing -- saps our guys of their aggressiveness and sucks the fun out of the game, as well as being a gift to the opposing offense.
Oh for the days of Charles Woodson coming off the corner to harass a quarterback.
We need to mix it up blitzing and not blitzing -- and when we do blitz, we need to vary where it's coming from.
By the way, when we don't blitz on third-and-short, let's have tighter coverage.
It seems we have some good players on defense that are being hindered by their defensive coordinator.
This is my best impression of the situation, and I could be way wrong. Other comments welcome.
Doing the same thing over and over and over again in the NFL is madness.
Now it's our team management that has to be aggressive by making a gutsy change on defense.

I'm so tired of watching this team play well enough to win but lose BECAUSE of the defense. I know, I know, they can't turn over the ball like that and usually don't. But that unshakeable feeling of DOOM whenever the defense is on the field just sucks!

PLEASE leave Pettine in Indy...

What pisses me off is the fact that a mistake free game results in a blowout EASILY up 28-14 and refused to win I can’t blame the def too much here because 3/4 TO were on off and gave them short fields I suppose one could argue a better def still holds them to a FG at least twice but I digress. Why for the love of god can’t this team play 60 minutes of solid football?

Given a halftime 14 point lead, there is no excuse to lose this game. Capers then, sorry Pettine's, defense gives up 17 points to tie the game. Can't wait for Leatherface's "yeah but we're a better defense than Seattle's" argument. No way this defense wins a championship. Another wasted year with Rodgers.

This is a top 3rd offence, with a bottom 3rd defense. AGAIN. Why, after year after year, we can't field respectable defense and special teams is keeping this team from more Lombardi's.

CAG, I never said we don’t need work on the defense, I’ve said we’re not the abysmal dumpster fire people like to claim it is. We’re an average NFL defense..

In fact, I agree with your earlier post that the offense is as much to blame for this loss as anything. As you pointed out, without those turnovers we win this game easily.

I did say we didn’t need the Smiths, and already many people want Preston cut. I argued for keepingPerry because we were paying him so much to not play for us. I never, ever argued for keeping Matthews.

And here’s today’s fact: We got more sacks in 2018, without the Smiths, than we did last year with them.

That's not true....
https://dairylandexpress.com/2020/07/09/green-bay-packers-created-a-lot-...

"Although their 41 sacks were a step back from their 2018 total, the Green Bay Packers were able to get after the quarterback much more consistently. While sacks are great, disrupting the play via pressuring the quarterback is just as important. And Green Bay was excellent at that in 2019.

The Green Bay Packers’ pressure rate of 38.6 percent was the fourth-best in football, and their 338 total pressures were 65 more than the previous year and ranked as the seventh-most.''

So much for "today's facts"

I’d definitely say below average I let last year slide because even though the raw yardage numbers weren’t great the 2019 def tightened up in the red zone, got pressure, got TOs and were pretty good against the pass which seems typical of the Pettine defenses when I looked them up (I only looked up his Cleveland years when he wasn’t attached to Rex Ryan) this year I can’t really tell you what they do well.

I hated that Rodgers used so much clock before throwing incomplete to Adams in the end zone. Wanted a quick 3rd down conversion and a couple shots into the end zone...perhaps not realistic, just what I was rooting for in the moment.

If Adams scores there, Rodgers is the front runner for MVP at this point. Obviously a lot more season to go.

Season? Entire second half of career.

Rodgers intentionally winds clock because the defense can't "Surprise" him with alignment shifts. His rationale is they have to be in their final alignment before he snaps the ball, so they can't hide their true formation.

Rodgers is seemingly the only QB in the league that has to do this.

It is what it is. I'm just happy that he's been better with snapping the ball before the play clock completely drains this year (compared to the last 5-6 years at any rate.)

Good game - we were just lax on ball security. Indy was too but they tightened that up in the second half, but we didn't - turnovers won the game for Indy. I thought Kenny Clark, Z and Raven Greene played well this game. I don't know why we cannot just run on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1. We converted once with Jamaal. Teams are getting wise on the short passes to the sideline on 3rd and short or 4th and short. It is time we get rid of Shepherd and get a good kick & punt returner - either from some practice squad or street FA. Worst case, let us at least get Trevor Davis back. Or give Malik Taylor a chance at KR (he was in college) and Josh Jackson at PR. We got an early look at our starting OL next year (with Runyan at LG and Jenkins at C). I don't think we will resign Linsley at market value with his bad back. Lafleur is going to have a new line - we need to get our energy level up at start of the game and after halftime.

Force a punt for once in the 3rd quarter vs a physical team or forever be labeled as soft. The Pettine zoo is soft AF.

4th and 1 late 4th quarter: Kick the FG or run to the outside where you've gotten yards all day on 4th and one....nope, out think yourself just like mashed potato Mike and turn it over on downs. Unacceptable short yardage play calls lately. F the Crosby injury crap! They went for it instead of tying the game on 45yard kick because they know the soft AF Pettine zoo wasn't stopping anything so why tie when a possession for the Colts equals no resistance from Pettine and co. other than some holds. Which brings me to this; The refs were the best players on the field for the Packers defense today. How can you not learn anything from last year's game vs Rivers? Middle middle middle middle. Easy 1st downs on same routes every time. I can't believe how bad the ILB unit is on this team. I'm missing UDFA Barnes! Thats how bad they are at ILB! OMG! Martin benched for Summers! Ouch! They suck! Thanks Gute for the future QB you could have got in the 2nd round and the slow plotter RB who doesn't even play. Meanwhile claypool caught his 10th TD and ILB Patrick Queen is going to be DROY! FU gutey for having us as bridesmaids once again! FU Pettine! and FU MLF for folding vs every balanced physical team you've faced and in the face of any adversity. 20-6 is nice but all 6 were complete turds in which your team was unprepared, uninterested, out coached, and everytime out muscled. Pretenders. A win today would have put a lot of this to rest but nope. Same old shit.

Aaron Nagler even asked LaFleur in a couple of these post game chats about short yardage. I cringe anytime we come up a yard or a half a yard on 1st, 2nd or 3rd down. Seriously why TF don't they ever QB sneak on a yard or less to gain? QB sneaks are better than 70% in the NFL for first downs this year. Is it Rodgers contract where it states "no QB sneaks allowed, must out think yourself and get cute with some pass or do the most obvious A gap run vs 11 in the box?" Do a freakin QB sneak ya morons! I'd bet that PFF has them as worse 3rd and 4th and 1yard to go team in the NFL along with being worse ILB unit in the NFL. Very Esteemed shit right there...

(Sigh) Packers played most of the game in 1 high or cover 2 deep because Rivers is THAT GOOD. Better to give up FG rather than touchdowns. Guess what? The Colts played cover two all game, and had their CB playing 10+ off the LOS. Why. MVS fourth quarter 3 and 10, that's why. When you are playing against a future hall of fame QB that's what a good DC does. These are not stupid people on either sideline.

Just like the Packers, the Colts decided that FG rather than TD was an acceptable price to pay. Their drag routes and rub plays played havoc with the Packers soft middle in the third quarter, just like the Packers did to them with Sternberger and Lazarus in the second quarter. Give the Colts credit, by keeping the Packers off the field third quarter, they limited the damage and protected their soft middle. People forget just how good Rivers is, even at 39 years old.

Did you read what i said or do you just want to be right? We took a QB of the future - maybe maybe not - Favre probably was saying the same thing when we took AR. That is that - decision made . So moving on - we took Dillon and Deguara who was playing well and was going to be a force - especially getting the extra yards and punishing those guys in the middle of the field- the same as Dillon - Dillon should be back after Covid and unfortunately Degura next year. Now I would rather have seen some better help on the inside rather than either of them but I am not the GM and we cant really tell what would have or should have because of injury and Covid - but recognize this - the number 1 overall pick is no longer playing this year. So I guess that Cinci shouldnt have taken him.

Like first poster said. Turn the ball over 3 or 4 times and you are going to lose 95% of the time. This one is on the offense and special teams.

Defense did enough to win the game.

Exactly. When you start 3 or 4 drives in field goal range it’s difficult to punt.

Your making my point.
When GB turns the ball over 3 or 4 times inside the Colts 40 yard line Philip Rivers & co are already in field goal range . Why would the Colts need to punt when get the ball in scoring position 4 times? Remember the Tampa game boss?

The other times the Colts had problems the Packers D got a turnover.

Really? How many punts did the defense force in the second half??? Crickets.... All units shit the bed out of the half. MLF wilts again when faced with a well balance, physical opponent and some adversity. MLF please Beat a winning team for once and the ShittyBears don't count for the eye test. Beat titans or F off as soft pretenders once again.

Well boys and gals, that's a perfect example of how to piss away a game you are in full control of. Colts played for 4 quarters and capitalized on our many turnovers. Rodgers man love for D. Adams cost him the game, Tonyan was wide open but didn't get a look.Pettine again did not put big bodies on the DL with the Colts running 40 yds before he made a switch. We again need 4 yds and are throwing 15-20 yds. down range = 3 n out. Move the chains and all things will be good. Lots of highs and lows, I'm exhausted. If we can convince the NFL to get rid of halftime we might be okay. I usually watch football at my father in laws. On the way there I saw a license plate frame that said " DO YOU FOLLOW JESUS THIS CLOSE".......LOL....WELL DO YA....

My take is that it was a team loss. AR did not play up to his typical standard especially in the 2nd half and it was full of bad play design and bad execution offensively. This O has been typically coming out in the second half of games lackadaisically. The Defense is a bend but dont break type and couldnt string 4 plays together to get off of the field in the 2nd half and the O put them back on 2 times in quick succession plus the fumble by Shepherd. The fact that we probably should have won the game near the end of the game but fiddled it away was probably Karma. But that is on AR and Lafleur.

We were underdogs going into this game and people said that we were definitely outclassed. But in fact we are not and we showed it in the first half. But I agree that Pettine is not a good D co-ordinator. I dont know who scouted Kirksey but ( and I never thought I would be saying this ) he is a step down from Martinez. P Smith is not a good player either. I thought that mostly our Dbacks played well and knocked a lot of passes down this game and offered pretty tight coverage. The Colt first touchdown is definitely on Pettine - he has the linebackers totally confused and other teams get us too deep too fast and we cant handle it.

I am not going to blame MVS and say anything bad - how can you - didnt Adams lose a fumble and cost us a TDi in a game? He tried to do too much without securing the ball which is what Adams did.

The team should have brought in a punter in the offseason and probably should use one against the Bears - you just cannot lose that much field position because a guy cant kick it 40 plus yards.
I hope that Linsely is OK but he is not getting a new or big contract - you dont pay a man who has injury especially back injury issues along the line.

All in all -we need to get our S together and beat the Bears - It is a home game for Fsss sakes - It is a game on Sunday Nite with all the Thanksgiving fans - play like it. We got lucky today as both the Lions and Vikes got beat. Now Lafleur - do you job and get the guys up and ready to play the Bears . When a team comes out flat at home - You point the finger at yourself.

Nah. Jenkins is good at LG, RT, OC and even LT. But he isn't as good as Sitton or Lang were at OG, and he isn't as good at OC as Linsley is this year, or as good as Bulaga was at RT. He is a plus player at five positions.

Bakh is dominant at LT. Bakh over Jenkins isn't a close call.

You may be correct stats wise - but we will need to move on from Linsley next season, You cannot give an aged and a player with a back injury big bucks or long term. We had to move on from both Sitton and Lang and they only got under 3 years with their new teams. Think that Runyon might be next into the lineup as a starter unless Njiman really improve we might need a free agent.

So we beat the Bears next week everyones gonna be feeling great ya know Thanksgiving and then BAM the Titans run for 300 yards on this defense and we remember again how we're only good enough to beat inferior teams. Dont tell me about how they beat the Saints without Michael Thomas.

You guys see what the Steelers did to the Jaguars today? What a real team does to inferior teams? Not just like scrape by? But thats what happens when you know how to draft receivers and devote the proper resources to BUILDING A DEFENSE. STARTS WITH THE FRONT 7.

I watch most of that game and the Jags put up a fight and Steelers only had a 14 point lead into the 4th. So come on man - Our problem is that we have not been building our middle linebacking corps. Especially under TT we have been putting our picks into D backs. At least last year we got the Smiths and got pressure and that allowed our D backs to get some takeaways - but we still didnt have a middle and that is why the run game killed us. But I agree with your statement - Front 7 - we paid Kenny but we need another killer D lineman next to him and P Smith needs to go and we need help on that side and in the middle.

"Why on earth does this team have so much trouble regaining momentum? Once the avalanche starts, it has no ability to regain its footing." This is the million dollar question. I hope one of the authors here would be willing to take up this topic because it would sure generate a lot of discussion, and hopefully, some concrete answers. It starts with MLF being ready with some creative and quick offensive adjustments on the field and, of course, the defense being able to mitigate the avalanche by either forcing a punt or turnover.

Pros:
- Better energy in 1st half
- Great start to the game
- Nice to see Lazard back
- TEs heavily involved
- Defense forced numerous Colts FGs
- Batted passes at line of scrimmage from Gary, Winn and Lancaster
- We're still 7-3 and in command of the NFC North
- Vikings and Lions lost today too
- Jenkins stepping in at Center without missing a beat

Cons:
- Still not playing a full 4 quarters with energy, focus and execution.
- Colts coaching staff made halftime adjustments; the Packers did not
- Poor ball security
- Losing Linsley. If it's a ruptured disc in his back, then he's done for the season probably.
- Too many mental mistakes on defense (blown coverages)
- Still looking for consistent punting after all these years
- Whatever defense Pettine is calling on 3rd & long, it ain't workin!
- MVS can make you jump for joy one moment, then pulling your hair out the next with blown routes, drops or turnovers.

Random Thoughts: This was the closest thing to a bare knuckle brawl we will see in the 'New NFL'. Game officials lost control right out of the second half. Both teams D/O lines, no quarter given, none asked. Lost is squarely on MLF and Rodgers. Locking on Adams when he isn't 100% (not even 70%) cost this team in the third quarter when the game was in the balance. Defense: Why play ten yards off the LOS. Because the QB on the other side is almost as good as your future hall of fame QB, that's why. And yet, this maligned defense found a way to shut down a top AFC offense when the game was on the line. Not once, but twice. MLF could learn from Pettine on how to rally his unit. That said, the lack of DL personnel did bite this unit today. That's on Gute. He knew this was a problem and did not address the issue. (Yes Winn played well when he was out on the field. Short term stopgaps do not solve long term problems) Starting to get this Mike Sherman vibe from MLF... Packers turnovers that wasn't led to turnover that was. (Thanks NY. Now go and die, die, DIE!!!) I need a beer.....

Had a feeling this was going to be a loss when we went 3-and-out in the first drive of the 3rd quarter. 4 turnovers is brutal; the soft defensive scheme is worse. The single most impactful thing that would make me hope that this team could turn it around and win some postseason games is if they left Pettine in Indianapolis.

This game was hard to watch, and yet the Packers were probably just one fewer costly mistake away from winning this one. But they didn't, and they didn't deserve to. Gutted looking at the team we have and believing in your heart of hearts that this isn't the year either.

As Arod goes the Packers Go
Just a question - that I can't answer. How many points does 4 turnovers account for?
For fun, Take that amount and subtract it from the 31 the Defense gave up in reg.
How many more minutes did the D have to be on the field, how much rest between possessions? How many points do the Packers score w/o 4 turnovers? Add that to the 31 they did put up.
The final score being a blowout win.

You play to win the game - not stats. Point being that everyone has an idea of what the Packers are capable on Offense.
Everyone also know the ability of the defense.

So you create a game plan that will give you the best chance of winning - Big part of creating the game plan knowledge of the team.

1) As ARod goes the team goes. How he executes counts for so much of the outcome.
2) Teams are going to score on you - Indy made plays as good teams will.
3) As pointed on this comments section - 4 Turnovers is leaving you a 10% chance of winning.

Once again pointed out just yesterday on this board - The game comes down to execution
The lack of execution seemed to be the real reason IMHO, that they lost.

I can't remember a team having so many injury issues with ILB and DB, could be a factor possible lack of cohesiveness/continuity. That will account for some of the breakdowns, but in the big boy league these guys need to be ready. I still have hopes for pettine but the coach is paid, as are the players, to be prepared. Finding out why and implementing a solution is the first place I go to fix the lack of execution to help this team in the short term.

I think they can improve and they showed me some good things hidden under the cloud of the loss.
This offense can put up points on anyone and plenty of them.
This team can create a pass rush. Gary and Clark are good and Z can just be a beast.
Arod is a stud, puts up 31 with 4 turnovers on offense.

Still about peaking at the right time.....

Only watched the first Quarter, and when I saw we were up 28-14 at halftime, I started to rub it in to a Colts fan at work. But then I came to my senses and told him we'll probably blow it.

All I can say is what kind of D coordinator does not have his D ready to come out in that situation to put it's mark on the game. Shameful.

Crap defense because neither Thomas nor Gute have drafted well for years or made the big trade or FA play that Wolf did in trading away a #1 pick for a difference-maker. I don't count Woodson because no one wanted him and he came cheap. But just look at the difference one truly great HoF player on defense can make. We've won twice with Favre and Rodgers. Favre had Reggie, Rodgers had Woodson. The Steelers drafted T.J. when we should have, and he's in the running for DPOY. They traded a #1 pick for Minka Fitzpatrick when he was out there for anyone to get. He's an All-Pro. The Steeler's, with an older QB then we have passed on a QB and drafted Chase Claypool to give Ben more weapons. We could have had Claypool. Three players we could have easily had and add in Patrick Queen, who was sitting there waiting for us, and imagine how different this team would be. The Steelers are 10-0. Wolf always said the biggest mistake he made was not giving Favre more weapons. Thompson at least gave Favre WR's, drafting one almost every 2nd round. Gute better learn that a QB needs receivers and a D, regardless of how good he is.

Really dumb response. Been a Packer fan likely longer than you’ve been alive. Pointing out that the Steelers have three great players that we easily could have had as an example of how they got it right and we got it wrong doesn’t mean I want to change allegiance. Is it somehow wrong to point this out? Do you never criticize or just cheerlead? Go find a safe room if you don’t want to hear anything you don’t like.

Some observations: Winning not whining is the way to go. Huge areas of the field left open on defense. Huge space with open receiver (Tonyan) on Rogers' errant throw over Williams head. Rogers' locks in on receivers like a rookie. Bad habits can arise at inopportune times. I thought Rogeers would accept some coaching on his bad habits. Hasn't really happened. The defense often looks confused, and communication between corners, safeties and linebackers isn't working. It looks to me that Aaron Rogers' runs this team, and his moods affect the defense as well as the offense. He's not confident that the defense can get him back on the field, and when he's on the field the defense has to count on him sustaining long drives.
