Gut Reactions: Packers beat Lions 23-22

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers win over the Lions.

  • Survive and advance. It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win.
  • Really smart opening call on the flea flicker by the Lions. They knew the Packers were starting an untested safety and would be selling out to stop the run.
  • Tough start to the night from Aaron Jones, with the fumble and dropped TD pass.
  • The defense looked like it was a step slow throughout the first quarter.
  • With that said, the defense also made a fantastic stand to hold the Lions to 3 after the fumbled punt.
  • Marcedes Lewis is a more reliable receiving threat than Jimmy Graham at this point.
  • Preston and Za'Darius are those charming men.
  • I hope Jamaal Williams shut up all the people who complain when he gets the football.
  • Brutal night for Darrius Shepherd
  • Incredible catch on the 46 yarder by MVS
  • Allen Lazard stepped up when the Packers desperately needed some to do so.
  • What an incredible throw and catch from Rodgers to Lazard for the TD.
  • Speaking of Rodgers, he was let down by his supporting cast for much of the night, but he played a hell of a game.
  • Yes, if Geronimo is going to be out awhile, they'll most likely make a move at WR. But I doubt it will be for an older, expensive option like Green or Sanders.
  • The run defense...actually kind of showed up tonight.
  • Mason Crosby gets some redemption for a brutal game against the Lions last year.
  • Short week to get ready for the Raiders. Lots to work on.
  • Go Pack Go.

Lazard had a very nice night. I watched him torch my Hawkeyes for years. This was not an anomaly.

Lions fans are pissed right now, and I can't say I blame them. At least three really bad calls agaisnt their defense.

My goodness were the Smiths ever worth the money.

As Rodgers said, postgame, " It's nice to finally see Alan on the field." He lost some weight and regained his quickness.
Just dominated for ISU. Better than Kumerow or Allison.

Agreed. If you watch the play from behind you see Martinez drill Johnson's lead shoulder before it gets to the goal line. He had the ball in his left hand which was also his lead shoulder. There's no way he could've extended his arm when getting hit that hard in the shoulder as Martinez's helmet crossed Johnson's front. The ref on the front side with the best view waved it short while the other ref running in from behind the play signaled TD. He had no view of the ball whatsoever. The head ref was about to call it Packers ball when another official ran up and whispered in his ear and they changed it to a TD.
Also after getting hosed by the refs at Lambeau against Philly, notably in the endzone on Rodgers int, I have a little sympathy for Detroit but it's pretty tiny.

They shouldn’t be pissed 1) they got spotted a free touchdown. 2) ESPN didn’t say shit about the free touchdown. I counted 3 PIs than were non calls against GB. Did ya see the non call on the center and gard for doing their job and blocking nicely. Sure the hands to the face was a BS call for Detroit, but there were just as many as GB. In general though, this has been the worst officiating since the fail Mary. Absolute horrible refs.

FWIW I agree with you re showing some patience re Shepherd - that's the gamble a team takes with these "project" players, one game they are top-cock and the next they are a feather-duster.........He's most certainly relegated himself below Lazard on the depth chart now though.

Aaron Jones didn't have a good game either - missed that absolute sitter TD catch and coughed up the ball with a loose(ish) carry.

Jimmy Graham also dropped one that should have been made for the TD....... on that one though I wonder if Rodgers has learned that Jimmy is more of a surer catch for a jump ball than off the laces. One to look at.

I wasn't a fan of Lazard. I can't say I am there now. That was a perfect pass from AR to Lazard on the TD. Lazard had a bare step. I also noted that Lazard didn't catch it cleanly. Still, I will try to get by my skepticism about Lazard and see his positives in future games.

I think Lazard is under rated and his performance got me wondering why he went undrafted so I looked him up and did some research. And I found that the kid is a real football player through and through. He was all state in Iowa 3 times, each year after his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons on offense and on defense. He was also offensive player of the year 2013 in Iowa, as well as defensive player of the year in 2012 and a USA Today All American to boot. He was rated the top prospect in Iowa as well as the number 7 WR in the country. He went on to star at Iowa State for four years where he averaged 60 rec 850yds and 6.5 TD's per year setting a number of Iowa State receiving records along the way.
The kid has confidence and I have no clue as to why he went undrafted but I'm happy he's with the Packers. It's quite possible the Packers could have a real diamond in the rough. His status as a former DPOY in Iowa gives some insight as to why he so good as a gunner on ST's and making tackles. He also had really good pro day numbers with a 39 inch vertical, 10-2 broad jump, and 17 reps on the bench. His 4.55 40, is about the same as Davante Adams who ran a 4.56 at the combine.

FWIW, it's probable Crosby hits a FG even without the penalty on the final drive. GB was at Detroits 16, so it's basically the equivalent of extra point distance.

Then it would be up to the D to keep Detroit out of FG range with just under a minute 30 left with no TO's. Would have been tough, but definitely possible.

In other words, the final hands to the face didn't necessarily decide the game.

Jimmy should have caught the endzone TD, but you watch it again...he was interfered with big time. So I’m not going to feel bad about david baktiari selling the hands to his face. Not one bit

Someone was kind enough to print out the rules on another article. Flowers has the habit of grabbing for the shoulder pad area and doing a push-pull using the jersey and/or pads. Ideally that is about the clavicle area, but he has got to be hitting OTs in the neck and Adam's apple on a routine basis.

This is great. I was looking into this but the NFL rules page is close to unusable.

In martial arts we where taught to grab a foes shirt (or hood if they where stupid enough to have one) and use it to get leverage on the neck. I can tell you that even at practice velocities it's horrible. I'm glad what he was doing was illegal because it's not in the spirit of the game and probably dangerous.

On the positive side of things Bear, the Packers D did a good job at stopping a reasonably god offense and the Offense did a reasonably good job of running the ball and working with the bottom half of the WR depth chart....... not stellar, but hey.

I'm somewhat buoyed that the receivers are at least getting separation. Years gone past, with a more highly touted WR group (and a non-existent running game I'll concede) that was not the case.

The Packers do need another veteran WR threat this year though. That's the only piece missing.

BTW, the O-line is playing well. 2 more good games and I'll be convinced that there's enough in the tank to confirm that Bulaga needs to be retained - I've said it previously, but if the Packers can get 2 more good years out of him then it sets the table next year for them to draft aggressively in what is shaping up as a good WR class (without having to feel that they must get the next RT in round 1...... unless that's the way that the draft falls).

The Packers were bailed out by the refs. We shot ourselves in the foot over and over in this game. Dropped passes, fumbles, assisted int, st turnover. Before the game fans thought this game would be decided by turnovers. What decided the game was GB's redzone defense and some aid from the zebras.

What's different in 2019 is the depth on GB's roster. Lazard stepped up, Redmond, Sullivan, Goodman, and Lowry made plays. GB wouldn't of won tonight without the return of Jamal Williams and Linsley.

We didn't see all the angles on that last penalty on Flowers; and on the first penalty he may have grabbed and held onto the collar of the shoulder pads, which seems wrong somehow.
In any case, I'd like to see both plays over again in a thorough way. It may be that at the very least Flowers invited the flags by repeatedly putting his hands up around the neck and face.

I saw the replay on Flowers from multiple angels and it was clearly a bad call. The loss GB suffered was at the hands of multiple bad calls from the refs. Overturned PI amd an ignored one to seal the game. IMO that doesn't make it right 2 wrongs don't make a right. I hate that refs can determine the outcome of a game.

On at least one of the Hands to the Face calls Flowers' left hand pushes Bakh's helmet near the left side of his chin. The flag came in very late. Was it forceful? Still ticky-tacky?

Head Referee Blakeman: "The umpire threw both of them. The last one is really the only one I've discussed with him. Basically it's for illegal use of the hands, hands to the face foul. To be a foul, we basically need some forceful contact that's prolonged to the head and neck area of the defender. So, in his mind, he had him pinned back, it was prolonged, and that's what created the foul."

One replay shows Turner committing a blatant hands to the face penalty on the same play Flowers drew a flag. Nothing unusual about some stuff getting missed on the OL and DL.

Thanks, TGR, for your good comments about Flowers -- which you may want to develop into a post later this week.
It sure seemed as if Flowers was doing something wrong for a sustained period of time, although -- like pass interference -- it's difficult for me to analyze both the rules on paper and the replay on the field.
One thing is it seemed as though maybe Flowers grabbed Bakh's shoulder pads around the collar and held on and even pulled -- which seems wrong, or should be.
Perhaps Flowers has been living on the edge of the rule book for some time now, and finally got caught.
P.S. It'll be fun to watch as Lazard develops: He has that height to beat tough coverage, and perhaps some unexpected quickness. He also showed some good fire.

So now maybe Adams,MVS and Lazard. Could be best group in a long time. MVS had a great catch.

Maybe you should watch MVS closer. He creates separation time and time again. His problems has been coming down with the catches and slipping on his routes. Gute invests in ascending players rather than veterans with the exception of a TE. I don't see the Packers adding a WR in 2019. I do see them drafting one in the 1st or 2nd round in 2020 depending on how the board falls.

Agree. It's still early days but this is looking like a balanced team with the (all important) belief to make a run at a SB - the only glaring missing piece is that second (or third) WR threat.

Gute has to be thinking this.

The WR's did Rodgers very few favors this evening. Dropped passes right on their hands, catchable balls that weren't caught. These guys are highly paid professionals who need to show they belong on the field and in the league. The frustration being demonstrated by AR was completely understandable. And J. Williams- if he'd been healthy for the Philly, I really believe the Pack would be undefeated. What is worrisome is that this is the second time they've played on a non-Sunday, and the second time they've shown themselves to be mistake prone and lackadaisical.

You have to admit though both Lazard and MVS made a couple of great catches.

Was pissed at Shepherd on the deflected pick, but in his defense the ball was slightly behind him and he slipped trying to contort back to it. Still should have had it though.

The Jones drop was bad. I will say he's and RB not a WR, but should have had easily.

The worst drop was GMo's on the Packers first series. That was ugly.

Huge win. I don’t want to make excuses for Aaron Jones but I do wonder if he was not concussed in the 1st Quarter. He was whacked pretty good in the head and he was just not right after that hit. Someone needed to step up and show themselves and that guy was Lazard. Sheppard was a disaster. I always want to give the guy a chance but the stage looked to big.

One thing I'm very disappointed in is NOBODY has given props to Jaire Alexander for bailing out Kevin King on the first play to Golliday.
Jaire left his guy and caught Golliday. That saved the touchdown.
And I was hard on Jaire last week here in Dallas, but people need to realize he saved 4 huge points right away.

Maybe you all remember when the pack signed a little known reciever named Andre Rison and it propelled them into the super bowl... I don't know, maybe picking up an experienced player might put this recieving core where it needs to be.

I ALSO recall Desmond Howard being as not even more impactful acquisition that year. 96 team was easily the best team GB has had since there 60s. Those two wide outs (Rison and Howard) were prime time in the SB... Who could be that guy this year?

Little known? Rison was one of the premier receivers in the NFL with the Falcons. He was hardly an unknown commodity. His problem were teams had tired of his off the field antics.

People will cry for Detroit but not me. I have no pity for them after all the low life crap they pulled during the Jim Schwartz regime.

That said the Pack is lucky to get a win against a tough team after turning the ball over three times. I expect wins are very rare when -3 in turnovers.

Rodger has his deep touch back which is great.

The ESPN crew is full off hacks. Except the main cameraman. He was good, didn't waste a third of the frame in an empty backfield.

Great game by Jamal Williams. Heads up football.

Jamaal with a stiff-arm to shuck a tackler!

I passionately dislike the Patriots, but one of Belichick's keys to their success is ATTITUDE.
Brady & company win a game by 25 & they talk about "mistakes", "left some plays out there", have to fix stuff etc.

I don't like when guys put themselves on a pedestal in interviews or tweets etc. Only pedestal is getting a Lombardi Trophy.

(1) I like that Aaron Rodgers seems to be sincerely trying to implement a short game, but I can see that there are times when he needs to be his daring, downfield self. On the amazing 35-yard touchdown to Lazard, we only needed 5 yards for the first down, and Kumerow seemed open on a crossing route, and Lazard was well covered -- but maybe there are times when you give our great QB the benefit of the doubt.
(2) Speaking of Lazard, after the touchdown, on the last drive, that short catch in which he bulldozed into the defensive back for a little extra yardage seemed to lift our offense to another gear.
(3) Great catch by Graham near the end, but he still seems slow and clunky; whereas Lewis looks like a beast in his mid-20s instead of mid-30s.
(4) I'm not as concerned about the turnovers by Shepherd as that he looks too slow. I hope I'm wrong.
(5) Mason Crosby will be alive and kicking for the Packers when we win our next Super Bowl sometime in the next three or four seasons.
(6) Somehow this seems the most satisfying win of the season for the Packers and us fans.

Offense was moving the ball too. Drops and turnovers killed a few promising drive. Still get annoyed when Rodgers drops back 20 yds on 3rd down and takes the sack. 2 or 3 times he was baited out by bad ref calls so it didn't sting, but those are momentum swinging plays that seem to always let teams back into the game each week

Packers WRs really did let down Rodgers tonight.

This game should have been out of hand, but the Packers Defense gets my game ball for keeping the Packers in a winnable contest all night long.

As far as those 2 phantom hands to the face calls, they were BAD. I also think the Packers made a goal line stand and got screwed there. So I really don't feel bad, just like you said the Defense held the Lions to 5 field goals - and that is on Detroit not the refs.

This helped make up for the Minnesota game last year. No P.I. on Redmond and hands to the face on Flowers; terrible officiating, but it went our way.

Hello short passing game (where have you been?) to Lazard! Maybe we found our new #2 once Davante gets back.

Great job Jamaal Williams--that's why you need two good backs.

Have to give myself a pat on the back for saying that if the Packers defense could hold the Lions to field goal opportunities, they should win. However, I didn't think it would be such an uphill struggle to move the ball against them. But it really slows thing down when you're so thin at WR. Gute is almost going to have to do something now.

Speaking of Gute, was it wise to trade T. Davis? I know he made mistakes, but he was an experienced returner and he was also sometimes useful as a receiver. Shepherd, after his blunder, was terrified to do anything except make fair catches. The interception near the goal line was just bad luck. Hopefully he won't lose his confidence and bounce back.

Davis didn't make nearly as many mistakes as many fans think he did.
Also lost in the mix is that he was considered our best gunner, and our ST coverage units were being gouged heavily the 2-3 weeks after his trade.

Oh.. and Jamaal Williams.. so many Packers fans just wanted to be rid of this young man.

He's not glitz and glamour, but all he does is run hard, get tough yards, churn out first downs. He's an NFL back. Honestly, the awareness to realize DET was attempting to allow him to score and drop down was impressive. Could it have backfired? Yeah.. but then again, how many times over the years have we watched the Packers lose a game because they left too much time on the clock for their opponent to play with in a close contest? It worked out, and it really did display some very quick recognition and thinking in the heat of the moment.

I'm okay with Crosby getting the "assist" for his Lambeau "leap". The last thing we'd need is for him to pull a hamstring or something trying to jump up. It looked to me like that assist was pre-planned for that very reason. Do you remember way back when when one of the brothers who kicked in the NFL messed up his leg jumping up and down celebrating a good kick? As long as he keeps making the kicks he can have two guys helping him with his leap for all I care.

The refs did nothing in this game they haven't been doing for years and years. They see a player move or react, in this case Bakhtiaris head going back, and figure there must be a penalty. Everyone in the media will go nuts only because this time its hands to the face instead of the 50000 holds that have ended drives and games over the years. Its really only a big deal because pass rushers aren't used to being on this end of the bogus call.

Rodgers was great and just needed someone to catch the damn ball.

The defense came back in the second half after king got torched twice early.

I can't blame Lions fans that are sore, though it didn't look like the Lions got in on that TD on 4th down, and there were some holding/PI non-calls the Lions committed that killed Green Bay drives also (though earlier in the game). That's why teams strive to keep the game out of the refs hands.

Anyhow, great game by Rodgers, Lazard, Williams, and our run defense looked a lot better. The Smith brothers are making a strong early case that we got a bargain with them. Go Pack!

A game-winning drive led by Aaron Rodgers! Could this be the beginning of a beautiful receiving relationship with Allen Lazard? Is it possible that this player was undrafted? An ugly win but that's what you need to make it to the post-season in the best division in football. The Pack goes up 3-0 in the division and that will be hard to overcome. Now if only the Pack could trade for an elite receiver to give Rodgers the extra weapon he needs. Slow man Graham and Shepherd are not the answers. Mr Nagler needs to get on the programme.

Shepard needs a year on the practice squad. Nice to see Lazard able to show what made him such a good player at Iowa State. And I agree Gute needs to bring in a vet WR if possible. Where in the hell is Vitale? Hope Tonyan's injury isn't severe from last week. They missed him last night.

The offense is still finding its way. Getting better. But have got to fix the dropped passes.

They get the offense fixed they can go places come January.

As for the officials, "They were who we thought they were". Fortunately, it went our way this game.

Three wins against division opponents is a very good start. And beating Dallas was great, and at Jerry's house even better.

Hopefully the team won't over look the Raiders while looking ahead to the Chiefs.

Last nights game taught us a couple things, most striking of which is that we need help at wide receiver. I think its time for someone in the front office to look around and find that veteran guy that can do for us what the pickup of Andre' Rison did years ago. I hate to say it, but theres a guy sitting at home named Jordy Nelson that looks like he is still in football shape.....just a thought....GO PACK!!
