Gut Reactions: Packers beat Bears 10-3

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers victory over the Bears.

  • That was one hell of a 5th preseason game.
  • Parts of that looked like McCarthy never left?
  • Rough night for both guards.
  • Savage is legit.
  • I almost fell out of my chair when Rodgers threw a 50/50 ball to Graham in the endzone.
  • Matt LaFleur has got to get Rodgers to get the play off.
  • Amos. Poetry.
  • Kenny Clark balled out.
  • Preston Smith is a really smart player. There were a number of times where he could have bitten inside but kept contain.
  • The RPO was absolutely brutal tonight. Between Rodgers going backside to someone who wasn't there to his absurd throw to MVS on 2nd and 5 when they were trying to put the game away, they have a lot of work to do there.
  • If only there was some kind of exhibition season where they could work these things out.
  • Gameball to JK Scott.
  • Gameball to Mike Pettine.
  • Go Pack Go.

He's gone. Turner was on his heels too. The crowd noise should not be a factor. Bear fans sat on their hands like toads. Just some inefficiencies in the line play. Bhaktiari was bull rushed and twisted a couple times. The O line may be juxtaposed before the the first four games end.

First game of the year against the NFL top defense from last year which is loaded with a front full of Pro-bowl and All-pro caliber players. Taylor will be fine and just needs the work to find his rhythm. Bhaktiari was really just as bad giving up 2 sacks, a few pressures, and having 2 holding calls called on him. Turner didn't look all that great either and neither did Linsley. About the only one I can think of who I can't recall any mistakes from was Bulaga.

Bahktiari had a bad game too and his penalty (not Linsley) cost us points.
He also got bull-rushed for a sack by the thinner Leonard Floyd.

Lane did no worse.

Stick with these 5 vs Minnesota if healthy.
I do love Jenkins too by the way, and he will be needed sooner or later. Hopefully later.

I guess it depends on your definition of pretty. Defense looked like a unit, not a bunch of guys running around, but team effort on that side of the ball. Call me old school, but 45-42 type games are "badly played games".

Offensively, run game just was not there, no fault of backs, imo.
Got to tip hat to Bear's defense, they were tough. Both offenses were grasping for things that would work, I think early success on D, can really throw off the play calling.

That was a classic Pack v Bear episode. Two very good defenses. Pack Oline not quite yet ready for primetime, but came through when it counted onnthe deep balls. The starting point for the celebration of Bart Starr's Wake vs the queens of East Dakota. I think they need to trade for a # 2 WR.

The Bears D line is the best in football. The fact is that we matched them with ours. I thought we were very much improved in coverage and actually had safeties in the approximate are of the play. Out D is going to be fun to watch.

I didn’t expect much of a run game, but it looked out of synch. This O needed to play. It’s the small things that show that it isn’t working smoothly under pressure.

I see a lot of flack for our guards. What I came away thinking was thank goodness we have the tackles we have. The Chicago D line and LB corps is just good. They are going to make others look much worse.

I have to acknowledge Crosby had a good game and that his kick offs were much better than I feared. Scott is coming into his own. Dare I say it, a good showing by special teams. I was very concerned about them.

Passing and running will improve with practice. The above comments about preseasons mirror my thoughts. When it does, the gap between us and the Bears will grow. Much untapped potential and fairly vanilla last night. I did love the use of the TEs though, especially against that opponent.

Overall, I did not expect a win. I did not expect our D to be that potent. Our offense is only going to get better yet still did enough against a really good D to win on the road. Finally, no major injuries I think. A great night!

- Defense looked great
- Offense looked as expected for new and no 1st string practice during preseason game
- Give the bears defense some credit on the bad looking run game
- Surprised Clinton-Dix didn't majorly screw up at least one time

This might be unpopular, but age is catching up with Rodgers. Accuracy and arm strength has dropped from his younger HoF level. More dirt balls on those long short outs. He is still a very good QB.

I agree with Nagler on getting the play off. Same old Rodgers with perhaps holding on too long at times.

Rodgers holding the ball at end of game to hopefully give to MLF for his first victory as HC.

Edit to add:

- Special teams looked improved and did not blow the game

The “ old man “ Rodgers threw the only TD pass of the game. Think about that. All the BS I heard about the young assenting turdbiskit...and he threw a pick, Savage almost had a pick etc... and his decision making was atrocious. The Bad news bears D is real, but unfortunately for them, this Packers D is for real.

At least we're not the Bears!
***
Aaron Rodgers didn't make a good case for not playing in the preseason...
***
… especially if he is going to expose himself to injury in Game One by holding the ball too long and running downfield into danger.
***
The new offense looked painfully similar to the old one.
***
Aaron Jones is fun to watch, even in limited opportunities.
***
Great Scott! Our punter was offensive player of the game -- along with our kicker, the maligned Mason Crosby, who seemed strong of leg on kickoffs and scored 40 percent of our points.

In all of my years as a fan going back to the early '70s, maybe the best performance by a Packers defense! Wow!

Not sure I would go far as to call it the best D performance since the 70s.

- The playoff win against bears

Just off the top of my head.

I don't think the defenses in those two Super Bowls were that good.
Against the Patriots, Desmond Howard helped to hide our deficiencies until Reggie White took over.
Against the Steelers, our defense was reeling for most of the second half, and saved by the big fumble to start the fourth quarter.
Maybe Sanders game qualifies; I didn't see it.
In general, I don't think the defense of the 1990s was nearly as dominant as the one tonight.
I'm slipping into senility, though.

That -1 yard game in GB was pretty special. You also have to remember the competition.

Either way, if you look at the difference between the first game this year and last year vs the bears, it's incredibly satisfying to see how much the defense has improved. All that motion and stuff just gave the packers D fits last year. This year those OLBs set the edge, and it was a total non-factor. Solid safety play taking away those gadget plays. Then they applied consistent pressure.

Hard not to come away smiling. It was a dominant performance.

Scott constantly changed field position in a one score game. Can't give him a game ball because he'd kick it through the locker room wall.

Scott saved his best for last. That was a huge moonshot to back the Bears up deep with 1 TO left. Of course, the flag helped a little.

That punt and forcing the Bears to burn 2 TOs on drive the led to it took away the option to dink and dunk into range for a shot at the end zone. And that was all the strategic advantage Pettine and the defense needed to make closing it out look easy.

The wind was completely out of the Bears' sails at that point. Body language, everything was saying they had already given it up. Maybe appropriately so, but you want to see more fight out of your guys than that.

Yea- Pettine nearly cost us with the Capers special prevent defense earlier. The Smith’s were the difference. Incredible upgrade. Same for The new Amos and Savage. Rodgers will hit his stride. He missed a few and was doing the hold the ball thing. Bag Lane Taylor and move forward.

He did commit a number of unusually un-Tramon like penalties tonight.

The type of physical penalties that are usually attributed to young players when they are frustrated. I do wonder if Tramon is starting to (finally) lose a step and he's responding with over-physicality out of frustration.

The D will be legit, and the offense looks promising too. When they can really get the run going we're getting at least 21 a game.

The bears defense may be the best we see this year. I'm glad we got this one.

Congrats to MLF on his first win as an NFL HC.
It was an ugly win but a win is a win
OL needs work on the ground game. Too many sacks as well.
We still have problems at OG especially Lane Taylor.
Rodgers and the offense made just enough plays to win.

Defense played great and the tackling was much better overall than in the past.
Savage looked good for his first game
Smiths made a big impact
Great to see the defense take over in the 4th quarter.

Need to cut down on the penalties. T. Williams had at least 3 maybe 4 penalties in the game.

Lots of work to do especially on offense but we’re
1-0. Bring on the Viqueens. Thanks, Since ‘61

New players on D, the Smiths, Savage, and Amos, all played really well. But the offense completely confused me. What was it? No screens, no crossing patterns over the middle, same three sideline passes to the tight end going wide... what's worse, Davante seemed an afterthought. Plus Rodgers continues to hold the ball. It's ugly. I think Rodgers and LaFleur need to really think things out and figure out what they're doing.

Great defensive win! Hard to believe GB could win with only 10 points on the board. Lots of work to do on offense. Why does Rodgers always snap the ball with :01 left on the playclock? Need some variance on the snap count and a more uptempo gameplan. Offense was definitely in pre-season mode. Looking for a much better showing next week.

The Bears converted 3 of 15 third downs. Just outstanding. Speed on D makes a big difference. Za'Darius had 6 pressures including a sack. Preston had 1.5 sacks. Savage was aggressive but smart. Amos was indeed where he was supposed to be consistently. Bears averaged 3.1 yards/carry.

What a huge contrast to some of the Packers Ds of the last several years that featured confusion in the D backfield, poor tackling and no gang tackling. Only bone-headed play was by the old vet Tramon and that wasn't that bad - the contact did start in bounds.

Scott was terrific - punted consistently well and at a crucial point in the game hit a 63-yarder.

Bears QB is "slippery" in the pocket - they had to be under control while rushing him. Imagine this D against a team with an immobile QB!

Special teams actually was so much better than last year just by not having as many mistakes (Except for Tramon. Yikes, but he gave the team some silly penalties). JK Scott's punting kept the field position battle in GB's favor. Reminded me of when our punter got player of the week for that cold weather game which ended in something like 3 to 2. If Scott keeps this up he is one heck of a weapon.

Nice win. Good teams can win ugly.

Yes, the D is and will be much improved - how could it not be? - and a win on the road against a division rival is always tough. But that was the Bears' offense, not Kansas City's. When some people are honestly suggesting that Turdisky might be as good as ARod, etc it gives you an idea of how much some delusional Bears apologists are overrating their offense. The Bears O was getting booed at home, and they totally deserved it. They sucked tonight.

I'm pumped about the D too, but we'll get our chance to show it against much better offenses than this.

Just a hypothetical for thought:
If the Bear’s scored a TD instead of throwing the INT with around 1:00 left in the game, do you think they would go for the 2 point conversation or kick the extra point?
I think they would have tried for 2 points to keep the rookie kicker out of the pressure cooker in week 1.
I don’t think the Bear fans could of handled another donk in the first game, too soon. Lol

I would definitely have gone for 2 if I were the Bears EVEN IF they had a reliable kicker. What did the Bears offense do tonight to make anyone think they could methodically sustain a drive and score? End it with the 2 pointer if you have the chance. Fortunately, they didn't have the chance.

Maybe, but isn't the old adage to play for OT at home, play for the win on the road?

Great win. National TV opening night. That 2nd qtr opening drive was lightning! SO glad Lewis, Tonyan and Graham were used in an offense properly. But the true reveal is this D looked LEGIT. Congratulations Matt Lafluer. Only bad thing was Rodgers getting sacked like 5 times on 3rd down. Shout out to ST - top performance. I was skeptical since I didn't see anything in pre season, but this was an impressive win even if the O didn't do much.

Happy, and frankly, a bit surprised by the win. I had a bad feeling about the offense heading into this game.

Rodgers looked like a guy who didn't have live game reps with his starters during the preseason. There were timing issues and he had a handful of bad throws in short to intermediate range.

I understand that the Bears basically shut down the run, but once the Packers started clicking a bit in the passing game, I was dismayed that yet again, handing off the ball was an afterthought. There was potential to actually put the Bears D on their heels and keep them off balance, but instead we went pass-happy and the Bears were happy to tee off on rushing the passer. Only 18 total hand offs today. Only Three wide receivers were targeted today.

Run the offense, hand the ball off, get the ball out, and utilize ALL the weapons. There's a potential for things to dramatically change for the better. Let's see that happen. I hope this was rust and working the kinks out, as opposed to stubbornness and pride. Need to see them play against a defense that isn't the Bears.

Defense is promising. The Secondary is going to be hella fun to watch in Lambeau- they are going to be energized at home. Smith & Smith were fine acquisitions.

Huge win, both for the division standings and momentum for a new team under new leadership.

Go pack.

Case could be made that teams need some pre season work. Even old town road m it stached Aaron Rodgers. Wonder WTF he was thinking at the end throwing on 2nd and 5? Whoever thought that was a good idea should u think that thought... Just a wretched 1st qtr start followed by that out of nowhere TD drive was probably the best part of the game (besides Bears fans boo ing their team). Pack is 1 and 0 and has 3 home games to build off this win. Would love to see offense click like that opening 2qtr drive next week 10 drives in a row!

It's been said that division games are tough old games, and this was one no different. A win's a win -- but what impressed me the most was our DEFENSE oh and SPECIAL TEAMS.

JK SCOTT punted his ass off tonight. For real. Give that man a game ball. Field position matters. And in tight games like this, he brought it tonight.

The Smiths, Savage and Amos were difference makers tonight. It's hard to imagine our old backline of Josh Jones and Clinton-Dix, as well as Matthews making the kind of impact that our new guys did. There was a juice to them.

THE OFFENSE still has a lot of work to do. But then again, the Bears defense will also make a lot of offenses look inept.

MIKE PETTINE....man, oh man, what can I say? He frustrated Matt Nagy all night long.

I didn't love it at all, but I didn't have much problem with the PLAY CALL on the 2nd and 5 pass while they were trying to run out the clock. It's the execution that was so brutal. Get up to the LOS faster.
Snap the ball earlier.
Have to consider giving Jenkins a start. He could replace either OG, but probably Taylor.

Curious about the WR snap counts. Saw Davis some. Did Allison and Kumerow play?

Curious about the TE snaps. Like to see more of Tonyan. Team likes Lewis. I know he caught a few passes, but can't say I really noticed him in the blocking game. Anyone have an opinion?

When he was in the double TE set his blocking was good. They moved him around quite a bit, the sideline pass to him was off. But his blocking was good. And Graham actually played pretty good, not just talking about his TD..he was using his body on chips before his route plan started. I liked it. I will say I missed the wishbone formation this game...would have been the perfect game to bring that play back and get the dust off it . Just kills me they had a chance for David Montgomery and didn’t grab him. Packers shut him down with good defense, but that guy is going to be good.

JK Scott - MVP

I'm STOKED with the potential of this D. Getting after the QB, gang tackling, blanket coverage, forcing turnovers. It's going to be a good year

0 injuries - hallelujah

I expected a slow start on O, but man those first few drives were atrocious...the OL was overwhelmed in the beginning but I thought they settled down a bit. But that Bears D is vicious too and they came ready to play. At times it looked like the Bears D was playing against a Jr Varsity HS team.

I wanted to see more runs and screens. WRs need to get separation faster. A few times I saw Adams 1v1 with Skrine...and that's just a mismatch all day that should have been exploited to the fullest. Disappointed they couldnt get that going.

Can we please get a damn play off with more than 1 second on the play clock??? Still wasting too much time and using unnecessary time outs...

I was OK with the 2nd and 5 pass. I think that play caught everyone off guard. Execution needs to be better. Especially in crunch time against our biggest rival.

I thought some of the calls were terrible. Holding on a defensive linemen against an OL while the ball is live on a fumble - are you kidding me??? I have never seen anything like that in my life. No call on a face mask to Aaron right in front of the ref.

Amos with the INT in the clutch was oh so sweet. Should have easily had a few more as a team. I like our secondary. Get it together T Will - that late hit out of bounds could have been costly. Why wasn't Alexander covering A Rob more?

The Smiths should be called the Smash Brothers. They are going to be a problem for opposing QBs. Clark was a monster too.

And my favorite part of all - the Bears getting booed on their own turf. I love it. The only thing missing was another "doink"

1-0. Next week we slay barney.

From the gut: defense played way better than I imagined. I wasn’t able to see the entire game but every time I looked at it the packers offense was in the field. On the flip side of that the offense looked like it was uncomfortable. I saw that play clock get to 1 far too often and lots of passes went very low. But hey the packers won so it is a good day.

The Packer D surprised a lot of football fans. They proved they are as dominant as any top defensive team in the league. The offense has shown growing pains but also a lot of potential. it was refreshing to see Rodgers having fun again, with the shove of Pettine on the sideline a case in point. If the defense can stay dominant they will give the offense time to pull it all together. But the Bears defense can make any offense look sluggish. Work to be done on offense but I'm sure there will be adjustments made. To win a game against a divisional opponent on their own home field is a huge step in the right direction. Savor the moment but stay focused on the next opponent. Go! Pack! Go!

Stopping another team on 3rd and 4th down was so refreshing. Every year we always seem to give up the play that moves the chains. The Bears offense is no juggernaut, but they have some nimble players that we were able to contain on 3rd and 4th downs. Loved when Patterson got literally lifted up and pushed back in the first half.

For the first time, Rodgers looked old to me. Hopefully he will round into shape. But this may be the beginning of the end.

Tramon, You are an experienced Vet. Please no more 15 yard penalties for bone-headed tackles out of bounds. Show the rookies some discipline.

Ok really tired of the negativity and gonna call it out, bullshit! Worst Oline in the league eh? Gee then the Bears line must be the worst -1 because they gave up 5 sacks too & they weren't playing against a "front 7 full of pro bowlers." And whatever happened to watching plays & understanding what you are seeing. Only 1 of the 5 sacks was a sack due to a player being overwhelmed, when Floyd bull rushed Bakh. Even the bull dozing of Taylor wasn't what caused that sack, as AR was a yd away & the dozer was on the ground. He not only stepped back but to the left also before being forced forward back into the dozer. Bottom line is 4-5 sacks were due to coverage, AR holding the ball too long or both. LeFlures offense is supposed to help AR get the ball out faster. Hopefully they get better at it cause he sure didn't last night. So give some credit to a great Bear front 7, some angst to rust because of 0 preseason reps & a QB with a bad habit. Don't trash the hogs unless they play like this mid year v Detroit

My gut reaction is that as fun and exciting and sexy as a high scoring win can be… I get the warm fuzzies to see that we seem to have a defense! A real one.
