Gut Reactions: Packers 44 Jets 38

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers win over the Jets.

  • If anyone is wondering what it was like to watch Lynn Dickey's Packers teams, it was a lot like that.
  • That was a hell of a performance by Aaron Rodgers.
  • Montravious Adams had a really solid game.
  • The Packers have something in Tony Brown.
  • Ron Zook should be fired then re-hired so they can fire him again.
  • The Packers looked like they had their bags packed during the first quarter.
  • Luckily, they play four.
  • Jamaal Williams is becoming one of my favorite Packers. The guy is just a hell of a football player.
  • KUMEROW!!!!
  • That 3rd and 1 where all the WRs went streaking down the field and Rodgers ran around before throwing a last second toss incomplete was the most 2018 Packers Offense play of the year.
  • The Packers got so, so lucky on a number of ticky tack calls.
  • But then the Jets got their own on that Bulaga hold at the end.
  • Which is fine because then we got to see that dart to Adams for the win.
  • Corey Linsley is so good at his job.
  • Fantastic sack by Martinez.
  • Go Pack.

This effen team can't even lose when they're supposed to. DAMN IT.

Yeah. I said it. I want Josh Allen from UK, and we'll need to be top 10 for that.

Now the top Edge and OT are sure to be off the board. But they just barely beat the Jets with the help of like 20,000 yards in penalties. So that's, um, well. IDK WTF that is. I'm sure some Packers fans are stoked.

Why does one of the best teams in the league at getting to the QB need to spend a premium pick on an edge rusher?

Cause they're not one of the best teams in the league at winning one on one's. The DC is very innovative with blitzes. Unfortunately, that puts too much pressure on your secondary - as we have seen.

No thanks. Give me a pass rusher who can win vs. a LT please.

Blitzing removes coverage... if you have noticed, we are not good at consistent pressure even with both original starting DTs playing.

Kyler Fackrell will be back next year. So will Nick Perry because we can’t afford to release or trade him. That’s 2 of the 4 on our game day 21.

So we clearly have room to add somebody even IF we keep Matthews, as some folks would like.

We get very good pressure with our existing group. And blitzing does put a premium on having some guys who can cover, and that’s why I think adding a premium cover guy is a higher priority than another edge rusher, especially when we cannot put 4 healthy, quality guys on the field in our secondary. Pass defense starts with coverage and if you watched that rookie pick us apart you know we can’t

And I would argue that very few guys win against good LTs, period. They do their damage against the weak links like stiffs and backups and guys playing hurt.

Old School you're not posting at Packers.com anymore. We'll actually call BS on a comment.

Cutting Perry still frees up $3.6 million of cap space. If you look at the difference of dead cap space between cutting Perry in 2019 vs 2020 it's not that much AND it sure beats the hell out of having a $14.7 million in 2019 if they kept him!!

Perry's 2019 salary....$14.7 million cap hit...$11.1 million dead cap...Cap savings of $3.6 million

Perry's 2020 salary...$14.3 million cap hit...$7.4 in dead cap space...

Cut his ass in 2019 and get OUT of that HORRIBLE contract!!

They are finally at the point where they don't have to pay (much) of a cap penalty to cut Perry. He's due $11 mil in new money and has $11.1 remaining in SB. Those are the two numbers that really matter. That means he's no longer effectively guaranteed a roster spot.

I think he will be cut. To me, the only question is whether they take the entire $11,1 mil hit this year or designate him a post June-1 cut to pay $3.7 mil in 2019 and $7.4 mil in 2020. I'd lean toward a post June-1 designation on the theory that a rising cap will mean the $7.4 mil in question is a smaller cap % in 2020 than in 2019. But that may be influenced by how they view the 2019 and 2020 FA classes.

There was this Nova that I watched where they were doing a psychological experiment on three year olds. They sat the kids down at a table and they give them one jelly bean. Then they told the kids if they didn't eat the one jelly bean after two minutes that they could have five jelly beans. Well, most of the kids couldn't wait two minutes to get five jelly beans. They just had to eat the one jelly bean right away. I'll let you figure out how that applies to the situation.

It doesn't apply. This is football, not jelly bean eating.

Draft picks later in the round are worse. So is letting a losing mentality take root. All we know after today is where a lot of people stand on which of those two is more important.

We all see what we want to see. If you want to see how kids and jellybeans relates to Pro Football, you will. Because it re-inforces what you already think.

For people that view things differently, it's a stretch to see.

In reality, there is no guaranteed "5 jelly beans" from picking 11 or better. Maybe they will get another Jamal Reynolds or another JJ Watt. Maybe dropping to 15 will get them another Jason Pierre-Paul or maybe it will another Justin Harrell. If you say you know how it will unfold, you're lying to me or yourself. So the basic premise falls down under the most basic examination. The experiment dealt in guarantees. The NFL does not.

It's good to see that you have come around to the reality that there is no guarantee of 5 jelly beans that the Packers passed up today. All they are facing as a "consequence" of winning is a bit longer odds.

Take a look at the Jets win probability at about the 12 minute mark of the 4th Q. Then check the final score. That will reveal why I'm not obsessed with better probability in the draft. Heck, they can even trade down from where ever they land for all I care. If they end up moving down a bit, adding a 2020 #1 and getting someone as good as Jaire Alexander, to hell with the odds. That's a good outcome.

A better draft pick = better odds. That's it. There is no guarantees in the NFL. You know it and I know it.

You know what has even better odd of helping that Packers than the difference between 10 and 15? Aaron Rodgers playing like an MVP candidate. He did today. And it was a joy to watch for me. It's a shame you missed out on that joy.

No, it's not. Because this team ain't winning a title without help on the right side of the line, at TE, at OLB (x2) and possibly both safety spots. And that's assuming health and ARod playing like he's capable.

That is fine, but you tried to deny the draft odds argument initially. I think winning begets confidence on an individual basis, not so much for a team. I buy that having confidence makes an individual play better. IIRC there are studies that suggest that momentum on a team basis isn't a reality, which surprised me.

So, would you package the two firsts and a third for a slot that you could get the guy you want? Or, if not, how much would you give up to get the guy you want? One only, because it would take a lot to move up a few spots. Not trying to be argumentative, just asking how much you want a certain player in the draft.

Bearmeat, these people are insane. You can't reason with them. They are actually getting joy out of a preseason win and think it somehow means something bigger. They actually believe it. lol The team that was on the field today was equivalent to scab football players in 1982 and Rodgers was the one real guy that crossed the line and decided to play. It was Rodgers vs. the JV squad. As Taryn said, "Yippee".

Anyone remember Tony Mandarich vs Troy Aikman? Lose and take Aikman, win and take Mandarich. Well, the odds were Aikman was the better player but no guarantee. Turned out the odds were right. In the long run, all else being equal e.g., assuming no difference in the abilities of the pickers, the higher pick will yield the better player. Is it always true? Of course not. Why? Because often all else is not equal. Tom Bratz blew it on Tony M because he discounted the likelihood than Mandarich was so dominant in college because he was on steroids and that once drafted, he would cease taking steroids. When you are picking that high in the draft, and there are say, 10 top talents, do not take the players with the more obvious and more significant risks. As Lindy Infante said on draft day morning, "Although scouts tell me he is slow, I never saw anybody catch Sanders from behind." Yes, Lindy was right, Barry Sanders was the rare once in a generation talent and Tony Mandarich was a fraud. But, Mr. Braatz made the biggest mistake in Packer draft history and drafted Tony M. Had the Pack not won a meaningless game at the end of the year, they would have selected Troy Aikman and avoided the Mandarich blunder altogether. I hope this helps you better understand the probabilistic nature of drafting and how drafting a bust at #2 doesn't equate to the draft is a random lottery anyway so it doesn't matter where you pick. In fact, I believe this fallacious way thinking lead Ted Thompson to conclude that trading down was always a good thing because it gave you more bites at the apple. Wrong!

Had the Packers won 2 meaningless games at the end of 1988, instead of 1 meaningless game, Mandarich would have been off the board and the Packers would have drafted a rare once in a generation talent not named Aikman. Barry Sanders went 3rd, Derrick Thomas went 4th, and Deion Sanders was number 5.

No one is saying that draft position doesn't matter, but I'm not going to be miserable because the Packers won a hard fought game. And I'm rooting for the Packers to win a second meaningless game against Detroit next week.

He's got damn good hands and is smart as hell. Once he knows what the hell he's doing 100% of the time, the Packers will have really gotten a steal. Nick Perry: What's even more baffling is that we had already lost Nick Collins to his neck injury during the 2011 season and I'm sure knew in advance that they didn't want to keep Woodson around for $10M+ per year.

Why on earth would Ted pass on Harrison Smith? Ugh.

Pete you have to split Ted's career into 2 or 3 parts while in Green Bay...

From 2005 to say 2010 he was deadly, especially in middle rounds. After 2010 to say 2014 not nearly as good but a few gems. BUT from 2015 to 2017 he was absolutely horrendous. What we're seeing now is the result of Thompsons misses BUT Gute is quickly turning over the roster. It's already much, much faster.

From 2015 to 2017 GB had a GM who was developing dementia.

Haven’t you folks been reading the reports of Ted’s failing health? It’s a coin toss whether he’ll attend his own Packer HOF induction ceremony...

Well if that's truly the case then Mark Murphy should have been shown the door BEFORE McCarthy.

If Murphy wasn't able to tell Thompson was developing dementia then I surely don't want him hiring the next HC or anywhere near the Packers Organization.

Agreed CAG. At some fundamental level- the way you play the game is really the most important thing. Winning is fleeting- but how you play reveals your true character. That’s why guys like Joe Thomas are role models. Played at a high level- no matter what. Tanking is toxic. It’s what losers do, and it embodies a loser’s mentality. I loved watching the game today. To each his own, but It’s strange seeing “fans” gripe about winning. If you gave these people a stack of $20’s, they piss and moan cuz they aren’t $50’s.

Disagree.

What’s this year’s script been? Packers have played good, competitive football in the first half (incl. against several playoff teams) only to collapse in the second half.

I think the reason AR — and some of the fans here — are “excited” is that they broke from that script today. The way that a team wins is by *figuring out* how to win. Winning begets winning. That’s an important core lesson for the young players to learn from the vets like AR, Davante and Tramon...

Seeing so many fans wanting us to lose for a better draft pick, which just isn't my style. I was pleased with the efforts and the road win, a year on from our last. We needed that remedied and we just about did that.

I don't think we saw anything today that would make us rethink the need for a significant overhaul but it was nice to see the rookie WR and Kumerow have good games, as well as Jamaal Williams.

There are still plenty of holes on this team and alot of decisions to make. But at least we won't end the season without a roadwin. They kept playing, even with nothing to play for. Glad to see it.

Philbin showed today he is a much better HC than McCarthy. The offense looked good and unpredictable in long spurts. Glad to see him use Kumerow more and give MVS and ESB more targets. Play calling was so much better. We overcame a rather weak defense today, just like during the Capers era, except for good reason i.e., defense is really banged up.

Despite my kudos to Philbin today, count me as a big NO on keeping Philbin as HC. The track record on interim HCs is not good and the Miami debacle is the proof in the puddin. Let's see if we can repeat this offensive performance next week. I'm thinking we will. But so what, it is all meaningless once you are eliminated from contention, other than losing ground on draft day, which is what matters in the long run. I've long thought the NFL should have a draft lottery for the non-playoff teams. Would be fairer and would end the arguments over whether to act against your own self-interest and win games after being mathematically eliminated from contention.

I would argue that the thing that he did today that MM couldn't do recently is get ARod to use the whole field and play a more complete game. ARod played WITHIN the offense today more than he tried to BE the offense.

I agree: Philbin is coaching for his next job somewhere and should not be retained by the Packers. In my mind, it didn't matter how well he coached these four games, he needed to be swept out with most of the coaching staff. Maybe some other HC out there will look at these last two games if ARod plays well and decide Philbin could be his OC. He's a good guy in a place where they don't need a good guy, they need a great coach. I still wish him well.

The fact is, the real problem is the inability to use two complimentary backs in a viable fashion. Looking for this to be a big area of improvement next year.

Let's look at it a couple of ways, Bearmeat:

1. Made me a little nauseous when he did it. If ever there was a time to act like you've been there before, that was it. That overpaid baby-man has nothing to celebrate until he's MVP *and* brings Lombardi Trophies 5 and 6 to Lambeau. Only then may he celebrate.

OR

He was just like a kid out there! Just like good ol' Brefarv, playing a kid's game in a big sandlot, having fun. That's the great thing about Rodgers, he's having fun and it rubs off on his teammates! Boy it was good to see enthusiasm from him again!

Pretty easy to make a case either way, but as far as how he "led" - the man played hurt. That's enough for me.

Rodgers doesn’t need to act like he’s been there before of behave a certain way. He has nothing to prove. Lack of SBs right now is not a result of AR. Is he a perfect QB? No. But would you rather have Turdbiskut leading the team? AR did lead, it’s a young packers team and he is showing them he wants to win. That is the very definition of setting an example. By not setting in a losers mentality.

Look at the Bears...signed players, have all the coaches people here liked and the funny part is they are still not going to make it to the big dance. Book it.

This game makes me wonder if Philbin is an inept play caller, or as suspected it was Rodger ego that was controlling the play calling all season long. I had to shake my head when the announcer (Barber) made the comment after an obvious run play where Rodgers threw it out to the WR on the right for a 4 or 5 yard gain, he said something to the effect "there's the brilliance of Rodgers, rather then pound your head against a wall and run it in there, he throws it out there for an easy 5 yards" and at the time, Williams was averaging 8 YPcarry and Adams was averaging 5 YPcatch. It's Rodgers ego that keeps this team from running the ball.... makes the offense one dimensional.... wears out our defense because of time of possessions. Frustrating.

that's not point, the point is all season long this team becomes one dimensional. When you don't run the ball, you don't control the clock. You don't give your linemen a chance to fire out and punish the D-line, they're always on their heels to pass protect. Since Rodgers is not capable or unwilling to check the ball down or converting first downs, just wants to go for the home run ball, it just keeps wearing down our defense.

You're right in the fact that a run may not have resulted in 5 yards.... it could have been 10 or 20 yards.

What was bad about that win? It's doubtful that Aikman would have done as well in GB without Emmitt Smith, that road-grader OL and a defense as good as the Cowboys had. Sterling Sharpe and Michael Irvin came from the same draft class and I thought Sharpe was way better before he career was cut short so I won't include Irvin. But Jimmy Johnson vs Lindy Infante is another reason to believe that Aikman was surrounded by resources he might not have seen in GB.

The Mandarich pick in many ways set the table for Harlan making the choice to bring in Ron Wolf. And we all know the history that flowed from that pick. Short term pain brought long-term gain.

Whatever any of us thought before kickoff, I guess this is why to play Aaron Rodgers. His presence and ability gave all of the other guys on offense an opportunity to grow, and the fantastic finish gave the team a moment and a momentum that can carry into next season.
Life is short, and the NFL season is shorter. There's only 16 regular-season games in 365 days. Gotta make each game count, a special event, an opportunity for improvement, an occasion for excellence.

I was against him playing. The second half performance proved me wrong, not because of the win but for the marker it put down in the minds of the team and opponents. I do think Kumerow ran some great routes and we saw the rookies seem to take a mental step foward perhaps. A small step, but they dragged a decimated D through and that was important for the future too.

Now 12 should be given some spectator time in the next game. He has shown his mojo is still there.

Anyone who thinks "momentum" will carry over from today until next September is kidding themselves.
And half the roster out there today won't be back by then, coaches included.

We were down 15 in the 4th quarter, and thanks to a lot of help from the refs, we blew it. Now we beat the Lions next week to finish 7-8-1 & will have a nice mediocre pick about #19. Another Vonnie Holliday, Justin Harrell perhaps....

People who were trashing Williams earlier in the season need to zip it. That's two pretty stellar efforts in a row. It's great to have two backs that can get the job done, and I wouldn't mind having a little more depth, either.

The secondary still needs lots of help with tackling, coverage, and being where they're supposed to be. Some things never seem to change.

Special teams is in total disarray. It will get much better next season because they can't be any worse than they are now.

Smart fans are praising his play, too. Over 400 yard passing, some big scrambles, 4 TDs and 2 pt run is obviously a big time effort.

I think it is more about having eyes than brain power.

All I saw in this game was the Harlem Globetrotters (Packers) vs. the Washington Generals (Jets). Rodgers of course puts up these fancy numbers against an inferior opponent and one who also knows when to fold in the end to make Rodgers and the Globetrotters look great and all the Hank Scorpios of the world go home happy. Lots of "smart fans" on the other side that can see thru this nonsensical meaningless win. It's too bad the Packers don't play The Generals every week like the Globetrotters do.

I'm not looking for a hall of famer. I'm just looking to increase our chances of getting a good football player. Statistics show the higher up you go the better chance you have. Who's better Baker Mayfield or Deshon Kizer? We might have won this little battle today but we might have lost the war down the road.

Tell me where I said he is going to fail? Look at what happened this past draft.. we trade back.. to draft later.. pick up another pick.. get Alexander... And not Davenport like everyone wanted and look at the energy this kid brings.. the d is different with him on the Field... Case in point here is that a quality player can be drafted later in the first round.

I'm not worried about draft position. No matter what happens in these last two games the Packers were going to get a high one. What is more important is the number of picks combined with the position the team picks at. The Packers are well positioned with numbers and draft order no matter what happened in these last two games. The real question is who is going to be making these picks next year. That may be an open question.

If that's all you saw, you missed so much. The Packers got a pretty good effort from their QB. 442 yards & 2 TDs passing, 32 yards & 2 TDs rushing. And a 2 pt run to boot. 18 point 4th Q comeback that ST almost blew. But Rodgers had more in his bag for OT. You don't get to see that very often. It's a shame you missed it.

Once Rodgers does finally retire, I think it is going to quite some time before they have another QB that does that. They followed up one HoFer with another. I seriously doubt they will do it again.

Also, third-and-long is sometimes a good situation to try a long pass -- when an interception is probably not all that worse than a punt.
Now if there's a guy open twelve yards downfield for a first down, throw it to him; but on this play Rodgers was being harassed and didn't seem to have any other options.
Trying the throw to MVS was a smart decision -- and as flackcatcher helped me to realize, the placement of the throw was remarkably accurate.

Let's be fair: I don't doubt for a moment that some of the folks we're talking about are fans. Many have been around for so long that there's no way they could be anything but. Criticism, in part, is dealing with frustration...and #12 earned his fair share this year.

There are several opinions on what it will take to get this team back on track as quickly as possible...whether they're focused on the play of #12, or hiring the right coach, or drafting as high as possible. There's merit to each, and--likely--all and then some are going to be important in swinging this team back into the conversation of SB contenders.

If a book is too ambitious a calendar might sell well, or if you wanted to go bigger follow the path taken by the folks at Demotivaors. Any of your stellar recent work would look great on a variety of merch.

"It is what it is, not what it was, or what it will be."

"Haters gonna hate, it's what they live for."

"Draft position doesn't always dictate how good a player will be."

"Sorry that the Packers winning is so disappointing to you."

"So much melodrama, so little time."

"Some of us Packers fans never want them to lose."

"I'm sure that all true Packers fans hope that they disappoint you and have a really good draft."

"It's important to have at least one substantial bowel movement every day"

It's shocking to see how injuries have wiped out the talent level on this team. But we knew this team would be thin at the beginning of training camp. Raw talent not ready for an NFL level of play, oh thank you Rodger. Now can somebody please show this clown the door before he drags down the league deeper than he already has. No front D line players, a secondary so raw one could slow cook them and they still wouldn't be ready and a LB group consisting of CM3 and who? How they stopped the Jets last drive is a nothing less than a miracle. Today Rodgers was mostly vintage Aaron. Somehow Philbin and Pettine found a way. Good enough for me. A win is a win. The Bears had 6, 3 and 5 wins their last three years yet they managed to take the division this year going away. By that measure their confidence should have been shit going into this year. Yet...

The momentum, confidence argument is just excessive gas. The Bears success can be tied to they are more talented than they were three years ago.

If confidence is so important why didn't the Pack take off after beating the Bills earlier this year? They managed to go 2 and 6 their next six games effectively ending their season. The reason, they're just not that good, confidence be damned. This win over a bad Jets team will mean nothing next year momentum wise.

If draft position doesn't matter why not trade down and take over the entire 7th round. Intuitively that makes no sense, just as saying losing draft position doesn't matter.

When the Packers next play a meaningful game it will be next September. I'd much prefer they win those, and many more, with an influx of talent as you'd think any "true Packer fan" would.

This was a masterpiece Mojo. Seriously. It was absolute perfection. I hope everyone reads it. If they do 50% who believe this was some great momentum builder will pretend they didn't. Thanks for shooting these guys down. They have no argument after this. None!!

Agree with Mojo 100%. That "momentum" nonsense has no statistical evidence backing it at all.

Draft position and likelihood of becoming an All Pro / number of ProBowl appearances, has a direct correlation. Unfortunately too many posters here have no mathematical or statistical knowledge and don't understand probabilities or correlations.

Some of their nonsensical posts also mistake probabilities with "guarantee".

December 24, 2018 at 03:35 pm

I don't claim to speak for anyone else but I will say I don't want to tank games by resting "A" list players precisely because I understand probability is no guarantee.

Momentum is not the term I'd used to describe the value of winning yesterday. I'd use terms like confidence, belief and winning attitude. Each team gets 16 opportunities to build those things each year. I'm not a fan of turning down any of the 16 to instead evaluate and protect/rest stars.

Because they decided to use their 15 of 16th chance this year, the Packers have now erased 7 deficits of 14 or more in the 4th Q since 2012. No other team has more than 2 in that time span. Or so says Rob Demovsky. I think that adding to that total carries more long-term value to the team than the increased probability of a better draft pick. It's something that is realized and is banked, not probabilities in an outcome that still can go good, bad or in between. Every member of this team knows that down 15 at the start of the 4th is not a hopeless situation because they experienced facing that and succeeding. Even the leaky defense stepped things up some in the 4th. That's another good lesson...good or bad, the last play doesn't matter, only the next one does.

Maybe I'd skew more toward the probability in a draft pick if I knew what the actual numbers were. Being twice as likely to find a good player at 10 than 15 is completely different than 10% more likely. Exactly how much better is the probability of finding a good player at 10 than at 15? But that cannot possibly be calculated. You cannot factor out the variable that some teams work the draft better than others.

In the end it comes down to a bird in the hand beating two in the bush.

Pro arguments reached:

1. Integrity of the league. Check
2. Morale of the team. Check
3. Fans/networks pay for exciting games. Check
4. Winning begets winning. I buy this argument on an individual level, less sure about it as a team. That said, IDK if that has been studied, but IIRC there are studies that suggest momentum isn't a thing.

Maybes:

A. AR builds trust. Maybe. It is a process at best.
B. AR gets "right." AR had a good game. Missed a few throws, but all QBs do. Mechanics and decision-making seemed the same to me.
C. HC candidates view GB as an attractive place. Debatable if this game changed perceptions.
D. So far, injuries were largely avoided. I advocated for playing Alexander and Taylor regardless of whether AR played, so that's a moot issue for me. AR got hit a whopping TWELVE times, but avoided injury as far as we know.

Cons reached:
i Lower draft pick. Check [Edit: we've dropped to 14th at present. Best we can do is 10th now.]

"but IIRC there are studies that suggest momentum isn't a thing."

I agree that it is not. But confidence & believing in yourself is definitely a thing. Those were the two things behind "R-E-L-A-X" and "Run the Table". Those were teams that never lost faith and they kept fighting. Good things happened afterwards. Wins like today feed that attitude, even against the Jets.

And that attitude was looking a bit underfed. The 2018 Packers have done much better at finding ways to lose than finding ways to win. Not today. I think that is important for the 35-40 guys on this team that are still around for 2019.

We are back to agreeing. I had to be considerably better than my brother (who is 3 years older) before I was able to beat him. I think that was because I'd always lost.

Individually I think winning begets winning, but I am not so sure about it on a team level, particularly if it is a large team. I do think that having bad coaching or coaches that don't hold players accountable sometimes can make good players mail it in.

Edit: I was disappointed that Donnerson was inactive. Probably not important long-term, but maybe he will get some snaps next week.

I suspect Boyle is a 'HC/OC/QBcoach preference' player and a fringe roster guy. Would not be at all surprised if he didn't make the 2019 roster.

As usual, Packers fans sniping at each other over Rodgers. He must have gotten his “head straight “. He’s having fun! Oooo! Let’s jump for joy!

An entertaining game and Rodgers was statistically stunning. I see at least one more season of rebuilding before we get our Super Bowl hopes up.

The Bears finished 5-11 last year. We can win the Division and make the playoffs next year and who knows what happens.

True, but the Bears pretty much had one unit in place (the defense was very good even without Mack), and an offense that wasn't. Look at the new pieces they bought on the offensive side of the ball...and they're still not much better than average.

My gut reactions:

1. Jets were head hunting today. Glad they lost. Glad Leonard Williams got kicked out.

2. I hope and pray that ESB is ok. Neck injuries for guys like Nick Collins, Jonathan Franklin and Johnny Jolly come to mind.

3. Offensive line is our 2nd need, right behind edge rusher. Rodgers got hit way too much today. He won't play at an elite level if he's running for his life in 2019.

4. Special teams was atrocious today. We sure miss Micah Hyde returning kicks and punts. The fumbles on returns has happened way too many times this year.

5. J'Mon Moore will probably finish his season watching on the sideline.

6. Too bad we've gotten very little from Oren Burks.

7. Would've been nice to see Rodgers play like this earlier in the season, but maybe his knee or collarbone hindered him.

3. Offensive line is 1st need, followed by edge rusher. We can’t live with Bulaga and some JAGs much longer. Or more appropriately, AR can’t live with them much longer.

Fair enough, but unfortunately this draft class-- like many out of the college ranks these days -- is weak on offensive linemen.

They run simplified schemes and under the new CBA, simply do not get the necessary practice time in to adjust to life in the NFL. We'll need to sign a veteran or two.

With 9-10 OL spots available on the 2019 roster, they can add both rooks and vets to the group we see today. And they should. They have a screaming need at RG. RT and LG are questionable. There isn't a whole lot of promise among the reserves. I wouldn't be surprised to see half the OL room change, including the person at the front of it.

The only two dead-solid locks to make the OL for 2019 are Bakh and Linsley, IMO. There will be more holdovers than those two, for sure. But I can imagine scenarios where any one of the rest are gone.

You play to win the game!!! Draft position is not something you cheer for....frankly, it can be a crap shoot. We passed on Derwin James......we passed on (fill in with multiple studs)…..but it doesn't matter....we got a couple good players from this draft......and whiffed on a couple it appears....

We struck out on Graham......cut ties at right time with Jordy......our roster will look much different next year and probably significantly improved.

Question really is: Who is Murphy chasing for our next head ball coach???

Ron Zook should be fired then re-hired so they can fire him again.

Best comment all season!

Offense averaged 23 ppg this year with MM. and after a small sample of 3 games are averaging 31 ppg. Its a start.

A satisfying win!

Guarantee come draft time everyone will be fired up! Really like Gutes first draft so far. That extra first round pick will be very welcome come next year, particularly if Madison comes back in best shape of his life the Pack will be on their way back up.

Turned out to be a great game to be at. My 3 sons all got to see a great win for their first game. Didn't mind missing draft position to shut up a few Jet fans. We had them surrounded in my section. Merry Christmas all.

I decided to spend the day at the Grand Canyon instead of watching the game at the Packers bar in Flagstaff. Glad I made that decision, even though I’m happy they won. I would have been three sheets to the wind by the end of the 3rd quarter, from stress.

It was great to see the Pack win one again. Now finish strong and knock off the Lions...and let the GM worry about our position in the upcoming draft. With two picks in the first round he's sitting pretty sweet!

Meaningless game or not. I give Directv all this $ to be entertained by me favorite team .Not fun when they lose. Worry about 3 or 4 years down the road when it gets here.
