Gut Reactions: Packers can't get over the hump against the Steelers

Aaron gives his gut reactions to another Packers loss in Pittsburgh.

  • Another growing pain game in 2023.
  • Hard think of a LaFluer sequence I've hated more during his time in Green Bay that the decision at the end of the first half to basically give up after they lost yardage on first down.
  • Joe "Light Box" Barry making Matt Canada look competent in the first half was completely expected.
  • Yes, it's a bit of bad luck to end up with a tip drill interception, but Jordan Love can't throw that ball to Watson. Peterson never bit on the initial fake and played it the whole way. Get off of it and go somewhere else.
  • Of course, it would be great to see Watson fight for the ball. A recurring theme.
  • That said, Love made some really nice throws, from the touchdowns to Reed and Doubs to the ball to Reed at the end of the game to put them in position to score.
  • Maybe we don't need a trick throw-back play every game.
  • Gotta admit, the offensive line held up much better against the Steelers pass rush than I thought they would today.
  • That said, Runyan keeps having a handful of plays a game where he just kills this offense.
  • How about AJ Dillon busting a big run?
  • Aaron Jones needs better situational awareness on that final drive. Zero reason to try to do anything with that catch knowing you have no timeouts. Just get out of bounds.
  • Sure would have been nice to have that blocked extra point and only need a field goal and not a touchdown at the end.
  • Some tough moments for Ballentine but I liked how he battled today.
  • The lateral call that should have been a Rashan Gary touchdown will be brought up as a "if only" but that's pretty par for the course when it comes to the NFL. They'd rather tell us the laws of physics cease to exist on NFL playing fields rather than admit their officials are horrible and have no concept of their Byzantine rule book.
  • Need the Gold Package to show up next week!
  • Go Pack Go.

Josiah, Josiah, Josiah.

You have one job in in PAT formation as a TE - stop the edge penetration.

You didn't even get a hand on the rusher.

No, I just checked again - it was #81 - Deguara.

Walker (63) was inside him.

Walker looked to his right (taking 51) - Deguara looked to his left (taking 20), and together they gifted 23 (2nd man in from the edge) an uninterrupted run.

Deguara should have taken the inside guy (23) as the outside guy has further to travel and a sharper corner.

90% Deguara - 10% Walker (by not numbering up)

Watson is showing himself to be a one-trick guy. Get him isolated on a go route and he can make a play if you drop it right into the breadbasket. But everything else he's pretty useless. Yet MLF/Love keep trying to force the ball to him. He's about the 4th best receiver on this team yet treated like he's Cliff fucking Branch.

So, he's a cheap mans MVS?

Love and MLF should know, that Watson isn't going to put forth a lot of effort in a contested pass.

The only way Love should throw to Watson is if he's clearly open, otherwise bad things just happen.

They should know this by now.

Listen....

Love threw two picks in the red zone with under 4 minutes to go in a one score game.

You can excuse Love for the first tipped pass interception if you'd like, but that ball shouldn't have been thrown.
The QB has to have some awareness.
The last pick was just....stupid.

I think PackerPasty has it right, once Love gets dialed in on someone, it isn't easy for him to look him off and find someone else.

The last pick was stupid? The Steelers had 8 guys on the goalline, where else is he going to throw it. Plus Love is getting hit by the RDE as he's throwing. Stupid was Aaron Jones not running OB. That cost the Packers 2 plays.

Ok...lol....the next time he has no place to throw it, why doesn't Love just hand the ball to the ref and tell him "i got no where to go with it" and just forfeit the game?
How about that?

BTW Larry McCarren, they had 7 guys on the goal line, (but you pick whatever number works for you, ok)
And Love didn't "get hit" by the RDE, the RDE pushed Rasheed Walker back into Love, and it was more a nudge.
C'MON MAN!!

*******************
GEE....
I guess Watson and Musgrave being taller than everyone, couldn't high point a pass in the end zone?
That wouldn't have been a better option than just saying 'f' it, and throwing the ball right to Kazee?
WAIT, that would take some skill....nevermind

I can't wait for the draft so they can get something better than a high school QB. The only thing Love learned from AR is to hold onto the ball too long. He is awful in the pocket, can't read a defense, rarely throws the ball into the receivers' hands requiring them to dive for the completion or get killed by an oncoming train. No pocket awareness. Throws into double and triple coverage. Throws over their heads, bounces it to the them and when you need that TD when they're 15 yards and in he cannot complete a pass. We all know how bad Love is, but does Love know how bad he is?

Your completely lost as a fan. Watch the game closer. Love has shown growth both of the last 2 weeks. Without the blocked extra point he doesn't even thrown an Int because play book opens up much more being down 3 instead of 4 late in game. Young receiver glass is showing growth which is what you want to see & Musgrave could easily end up being the best TE taken in a loaded class this past draft. We all knew this would be an uneven season but this team is starting to make improvement & growth the last 2 weeks, that needs to be defining thing for this season is continued growth from such a young roster.

Good perspective, tommynak.
We knew there would be ups and downs, and the key is progress overall.
The Packers have been in just about every game this season, and won a few of them.
It seems the players are showing promise, but perhaps not so much the coaches.
It stings when the Packers come up short, but we have to be careful in discerning what is going right thus far from what is going wrong.

There was an interesting pod snippet of one of the Packers beat writers who had Jace Sternberger on as a guest.

He explained the detail that the Packers expect of their skill position players - as opposed to other rosters that he's been on (incidentally - including the Steelers).

Personally - I'm seeing progress from the guy.

There were some great throws today and some decent improvs - also some good pocket awareness (on occasions) against a GREAT rushing D.

I saw some drops that shouldn't have been.

The next homework item for Love is to embrace the Rodgers motto of " my guy or no guy" - if your player can't make the catch, no-ones getting it.

Those deep throws need to be out in front of his receiver - DB's are now getting a taste that he routinely underthrows the deep ball, and will lock onto it. He needs to change this up now.

I'd commend our CBs but the Steelers took what we gave them...no need to force against a team that has trouble executing.

Musgrave integration continues with chunk plays...with the holidays nearing, can we give him the nickname "The Bumble?" Maintaining his balance is like asking for 80F in January.

They fed Watson early until the drop...still need to see more underneath routes to utilize speed / YAC. Every deep throw to him I shake my head before it's thrown...perhaps Love & Watson should practice comeback routes instead?

Why does Aaron Jones choke in big moments? The drop, the poor decision to stay in bounds... (shoulder shrug).

Fast forward to 12-11-23, we're now 3-9 in a similar situation where we were against the Rams the week before...winnable game, who shows up?

I'd like to see Love's stats while targeting Watson. Clearly, they don't have "it" and the fact that they keep trying to force the ball to him to try and make "it" is quite literally losing them games.

Aaron Jones made one of the worst decisions I have ever seen in my life not running out of bounds for -1 or -2 yards and instead ran to midfield for 0 yards effectively wasting 15 seconds of clock time the Packers could not afford to lose.

Hats off to the refs for giving the Steelers 3 first downs in the first half on phantom calls and that absolutely nonsensical "incomplete pass" that everyone outside of the review booth could see was clearly a lateral and fumble. GB did not deserve to win with the way they played at the end, but damn these games are getting harder and harder to watch with the way the refs are calling them.

Let's not give up on Love or Watson, or even Love to Watson.
On the other hand, we don't need to force the ball to Watson.
Still call some plays for Watson as the primary receiver, but that doesn't mean the throw has to go to him if he's covered.
***
On the very last play, I don't know what Love saw from the pocket, and how much pressure he was under -- but with some four Steelers lined up on the end zone at the start of the play, it seems Love would have done well to put some more air under the ball to get it over that first line of pass defenders, as he did on the touchdown passes to Doubs and Reed.
***
As far as the interception in the end zone, I think it was a good decision by Love and a decent effort by Watson.
It seems Watson had at least half a step, and Love made a decent throw just a little short.
The two defenders for the Steelers made a nice play, and got a little luck in the bargain.

I'm not giving up on either. I'm merely suggesting that in the thick of things, with the game on the line, throw to the guys who have been there and proven themselves reliable all year. Stop throwing to the guy everyone is double teaming. He can't even beat single coverage most of the time. The best catch I've seen him make this year was a poor read on a ball that led to a spectacular catch and an injury last week against the Rams. Through 6 games? That's what we have to work with? The amount of contested catches he simply cannot come down with is staggering. He needs to use the frame he's got and fight for the ball.

Stroud is a marvel thus far, and it doesn't seem right to compare him to Love too closely.
Love is basically a rookie as far as being on the field, and it's best to compare him to rookie quarterbacks in general -- and to be patient.
Actually, it seems Love stood tall today against a ferocious Steelers pass rush, and did some impressive work to build upon going forward.
At least one gamechanger was that touchdown pass to Reed on third and long, with the ball traveling more than 45 yards in the air to land safely at its destination.
The long pass to Reed on the last drive would be another.
It seems Love will endure if we endure with Love.
***
Like Bart Starr, Love seems to have calm under pressure and steely determination that will pay off big time with patience -- but the underestimated Starr wasn't built in a day.

Love ya Swisch, but can’t agree.
Love is NOT a rookie—Stroud is.
Stroud’s working with young inexperienced receivers too.
Stroud has a rookie head coach.
…and I certainly wouldn’t compare Starr’s early career with Love’s.
Patience is not necessarily a virtue in the NFL —it’s a perform or else business. Love has had several opportunities to win games and hasn’t delivered.

A thumbs up in disagreement, Starrbrite, as I appreciate good discussion.
It would be interesting to compare what the Texans offense is doing to what the Packers offense is doing.
How are the Texans getting such great production?
Is it play calling? Receivers? The quarterback?
***
P.S. Love has delivered big time at the end of games against the Saints and Rams for wins. Even today, he brought back the Pack from a significant deficit, and then made a key throw for a long gain near the end for an opportunity to win.
Halfway through his first season on the field -- and with an extremely inexperienced corps of receivers and an iffy offensive line -- it doesn't seem like such a poor start to his career.
Maybe it's fair to say he's been pretty good, and showing promise.

Just not good enough yet on offense to finish these types of games. However, there is no defending the defensive game plan coming out of the locker room. You knew the Steelers are going to run the ball and you are constantly in nickel with only two d-lineman in the game without regard to the down and distance. That is brutal.

With 8 games to go in this season, it's still would be worthwhile to go with a new defensive coordinator.
Under Barry, the defense is good, but seemingly just good enough to lose. After two or three big chunk runs by the Steelers in the fourth quarter, the Pickett scramble on third down for a first down may be the last straw.
With all of the talent on that side of the ball, we need to start seeing if this defense is able to start trending toward greatness.
Maybe that should start tomorrow.
P.S. We still have hope that some of the young players on the Packers defense can step up to be solid starters and perhaps even stars over the next couple of years, but it doesn't seem as though Barry is likely to turn into an excellent defensive coordinator during that time.
If that's an accurate analysis, then why keep Barry any longer?

We won’t do anything dramatic under LaFleur. Just like we won’t win when it matters with him. Barry continues to be Barry. Dug us a hole too big to recover from. Myers and Runyon didn’t help yet again. We don’t learn or try anything, just hope for better. That’s the LaFleur way and it didn’t work in ‘19-‘21 with a good roster and it’s not worked since.

Thumbs up, Coldworld.
I wonder, though, if it's more accurate to say that the Packers did recover from the early hole by going up by a point in the second half.
Then, it seems, the Packers lost the lead by allowing some chunk runs plus that late quarterback scramble by Pickett. I don't why, but it was frustrating to have the Packers fail on defense late after failing on defense early.
It might be unfair, but it seems the defense plays just good enough to lose.

Remember we had the ball after half time . Let’s say we don’t give up 17 on the first 3 drives, maybe 10 or even 13. Everything that comes after changes. This team needs our D to do better. We all knew that before the season. The truly frustrating thing is that they showed they could do it later. Coaches change games sometimes.

It seems important to point out that we basically agree, Coldworld.
I was not contradicting your previous post, but going further in saying that it appears the defense failed late in the game as well as early in the game.
I'm interested to know how you think the Packers defense did after the Packers offense took the lead.
I'm wondering why the Packers were apparently so porous against the run game of the Steelers late in the game when it seems we didn't have to be all that concerned about the pass game of the Steelers.
In other words, couldn't our defense have put more emphasis on stopping the run game, while trusting that we could still cover the receivers for the Steelers?

I chose to rely entirely on the radio broadcast for my perception of this game. Wayne Larrivee has exceeded his best-by date and needs to be tossed out. Even if I give him some grace for inaccurate information as far as receiver/ball carrier/length of gain/loss, down and distance, time remaining, which side of the 50 teams are on, and overall lack of situational awareness, there would still be the issue of correctly describing which unit was coming onto the field (FG vs Punting) at a key moment. The man is confused. Please give him a nice place to sit in the CASE-IH Red Zone and let him pet a puppy.

I’m disappointed we couldn’t take advantage of opportunities today. Looking forward to reading most of your comments.

Much improved and they actually held my attention to the bitter end and not just background noise while I hang decorations. Still going to come down to who will be the play makers when needed just like every team has to find. Can’t say if they had AR because when was the last time he was a clutch play maker and not a gagger? But you either have the clutch gene or you don’t and I see a bunch of guys with the game on the line looking at each other wondering if they got one…or two?

But you right as Ar was so bad when it counts we should get rid of him after 2011 the only time he one games when it counts. So Love can not have less clutch gene than Mr. ivermetin, no way.
Good game by Love today, great 3 down completions

Yes, there was progress, and more easily seen in this game.
Yes, there are foot holes this team cannot seem to avoid.
Watson cannot be counted on.
Let's get some Wick in the candle of others.
Musgrave is like loading a musket rifle, takes too long to reload after a shot.
Our veterans on Offense need to be smarter.
Love is still a 50/50 QB with his passing. Either good or bad. That needs to get better faster.
This team is still its own worse enemy, and that will get exploited more over the next few games.
A couple of big steps forward, but too many baby steps back.
They still need to learn how to win, and not rely on the opponent to lose.

It's the best I can offer, so have it.

I actually agree with everything here.

The item I highlight is "this team is still its own (worst) enemy)- that's a huge positive because it means they have the means to make a dramatic improvement within their own house.

It means the losses aren't being imposed upon them by their opponents, they're self-inflicted, and therefore they have all the means they need to clean it up and compete.

Most young teams don't just come out of nowhere and win. They learn to win. This is all part of the process. It's more fun if they just win now, but more gratifying and lasting when it's earned through trial by fire.

Welp, I need the Packers to go on 8 game winning streak. :)

11-6! GPG.

I've not-so-jokingly been suggesting the Packers get him enrolled in Ballet classes during the offseason.

If it was good enough for Jerry Rice in his prime, it's probably good enough for a fledgling Luke Musgrave.

I understand that Love's completion percentage is pretty awful by NFL standards, and not saying he isn't too blame, BUT...

I've always been very positive towards Gute and the job he's done since taking over a bad situation back in 2018? I believe. But to draft Rodgers replacement with the intention of Love taking over as QB1 eventually....and then allow the WR/TE rooms to become completely depleted by the time Love (or whomever would have been drafted for that role) takes over, that his first season as QB1 is throwing to the most inexperienced pass catching group in recent NFL history is horrible team building.

I don't know if Love was going to be "the guy" either way but putting him behind that 8-ball was totally unfair to him and the team's evaluation of him. It might be too late to rectify that at this point.

I firmly believe the *Gutekunst's* plan was to insert Love as the starter in 2020, 2021 at latest. It's what makes sense.

I believe *Mark Murphy* said, Nope. we're going all-in on Rodgers and instituted the "run it back" philosophy that basically stunted new growth in favor of aging veterans for a few years and leveraged the future of the cap for the present (which has now come home to roost, but we're getting close to finally having off our backs.)

We had a dysfunctional model where the GM wasn't allowed to control the entire process. The GM is working with the scouts and making personnel decisions with a roadmap in mind; but the guy who inks the contracts (who also wanted to be the GM of the team) is not on the same page as the GM because he doesn't report to him, and Murphy who wields the rubber stamp of approval in all things is just.. just fucking it all up.

I have to admit, I liked what I saw a hell of a lot more today than the previous 5 or 6 weeks.

All in all I was luke warm okay with the way Love played. That throw to Watson was NEVER there. You just can't throw that Favre...I mean Love. But Christian Watson HAS to help his QB. Now I admit, that was a horrible decision to throw that ball, but Watson NEVER seems to do his QB any favors. Hopefully that starts coming...SOON.

I like Musgrave. Rumbling, stumbling, bumbling Luke Musgrave.

Watching CJ Stroud of Houston the last two weeks with TWO rookie WRs making all those plays makes me wonder why our 4th year QB can't do anything remotely close. Especially when you consider the offensive genesis that is Matt LaFleur. Today WAS better. Hopefully it's leaps and bounds from here guys.

Sigh...

My impression of Jordan Love is that he has carried himself with class ever since he came to Green Bay; has persevered like a pro through some ups and downs during the first half of this season; and then stood tall today against a ferocious Steelers defense with some fine play.
Time will tell, but my early impression is that we have a keeper at quarterback.

OK, so watching the defense get pushed around in the first half was just embarrassing. I don't care if they tightened up later on, that was JV level stuff.

Remember when people were ranting that Bisaccia should be the head coach because he was so darn awesome?

Watson is probably our #4 receiver. I still have hope for him, as long as he can stay healthy. Oh, and about that....

NOT a good game for Aaron Jones.

Loved seeing Musgrave get some big plays the past few games, and his blocking is better than I expected. But why does the dude keep falling down without contact? Seems like every game he takes a digger of his own accord.

Not worked up about the lateral. No one expects that to be called.

Watson isn’t Adams, and never will be, he’s a different type physically and in terms of upside, but he’s coasting. He’s not improved his route running and he’s not playing physically. That said, why won’t we use him on crossers, which is what he always did well. Poor usage on top of a guy who seems to have allowed last year to fool him. He needs taking aside and telling him he’s not cutting it. Bench him if he doesn’t show more, for his own good. Treating him like royalty entitled by right hasn’t worked.

Needs to be doubs, wicks, and Reed. Watson will play but it's gotta be those 3 guys. They are the best 3 wrs. Go back to week 3 when Watson came back, that is when love started throwing picks and losing confidence. He seems to have his confidence back at least, but lafleur needs to get these guys on the field more and stop trying to force feed Watson. He's a second year guy hes not a seven year vet on a big second contract. There's some young talent there, let them all gel and draft a LT in 2022. Cus Walker was getting bull rushed by highsmith. Give love time, he will be a good QB I believe.

The Steelers ran wild running off left guard and left tackle (and did okay to pretty good elsewhere). I'd have to watch the game again, but my perception is that Van Ness did not have a good day against the run, though his stat line has 1 TFL and 2 solo tackles. Don't think the DL had a good day. Pickett only had 23 attempts and those seemed like they were done just for a change of pace. 36 rushes for 205 yards. Yikes!!

If Love makes Musgrave adjust to his pass, Musgrave is going to stumble and fall. Mustrip (credit to Packer0808) did get down the seam and perhaps there is some chemistry and some big play availability.

GB is trying hard to get Watson going. I don't blame them, but it ain't working.

Reed body catches. He bodied the TD pass and the punt muff. Yet he is quick and looks like a pure slot receiver who has a future in the NFL. GB needs more out of Doubs and Watson, or they should give Wicks a real shot with 50+ snaps.

EDIT: This was better. Shoutout for Ballentine who I thought held up well, overall. The OL held up in pass pro. One Watt sack was because Love couldn't step up in the pocket, IIRC. Not the best rep by Tom but sometimes things combine to push a relatively harmless pressure or just getting run wide around the arc into a sack. Overall Tom and Walker looked functional in pass pro against two high quality Edge guys. Their interior DL had a good day GB's IOL. Last week the Rams' NT had 10 freaking tackles. When does an NT get double digit tackles? Benton and Heyward had games that were too good. Runyan more inconsistent than consistently bad. Funny when Tom and Runyan pulled and got stoned, along with the GB's RB. But they tried again and sprang Dillon for 40, IIRC.

Jones touting himself about holding other accountable and then doesn't hightail it out of bounds. Instead of 4th and 3 with 3 seconds, it should have been 3rd and 3 with 10 or 15 secons, more than enough for two shots into the end zone.

Reed's punt muff was a complete misjudging of the ball. Watch the tight shot replay- the ball doesn't come in clean, it actually glances off his facemask at the last second.

Agree about Runyan's inconsistency as opposed to consistently bad.. but seems like a great reason to pop Rhyan in for a game or two, create real competition, and see what shakes out.

Speaking of competition, start seating watson a bit and getting Wicks in there more. In fact, why not just literally rotate all these guys through with equal time and see who rises up and where the pieces fit together. I get that they want to gameplan to player strengths, but maybe it's just too early to fall on that.

Bright spot- the OL did basically take Watt out of the equation in the second half. So that was nice.

I do have hope though. They have a lot of talent at wr. If they can draft a LT, who can come in and play(big if), they got something to work with. I think love will be a good NFL QB, it's easy to say love sucks because "cj Stroud derrrrr cj Stroud" but not every NFL QB develops the same. He looked today like he did in weeks 1 and 2, and that's a guy playing with confidence. He nailed Jayden Reed on that deep ball because he had time to throw it. The Watson play at the end wasn't a great throw, but Peterson made a nice play. We will see.

Love can't throw that ball into double coverage, but if you watch that play, he underthrew it to Watson. If he had been led further, maybe. I was not thrilled with some of the "machismo" play calls throughout the game in certain situations, but most of them ended up a positive outcome- still didn't like the calls.

I thought the throw/tip/int to Watson was unfortunate. I don't have a problem with throwing a back shoulder and asking the WR to fight for it, but I don't like the placement to the inside shoulder. I understand dropping the ball on the outside- just over or even outside the sideline- for the back shoulder is far more difficult due to defender placement, but Love has shown he can make that throw and it is less apt to be tipped up and recovered. Ball placement there can be improved.

I got up off my butt and started yelling "you idiot" at #33 when he cut back inside.

For a split second, I thought the Packers were actually going to run a fake spike at the end, and I would have actually preferred that they did. Normally, I wouldn't like the idea of an extremely young offensive unit trying to pull off a rush to the LOS to pull off a fake clock-killer, last-second TD attempt, however, I would have preferred to have our inexperienced offence attempt to take advantage of an off-balance and unsuspecting Steelers defense, rather than trying to prepare our offense to attack a Steelers defense with all the time in the world to prepare themselves for the down.

Tough lessons lead to rewards down the road.

Until mathematically eliminated... 11-6 :) GPG

This is a pretty comprehensive edition of Gut Reactions and I really can't add much to it.

We didn't come out on top, but if there was such a thing as a more "digestible" loss, this is it; at least on the offensive side, where some progress is being made. What is not digestible is Barry's run defense, which screwed us again by allowing over 200 yards to a team that is not a rushing powerhouse.

The Love-Watson chemistry just isn't working very well--only two receptions on seven tries this time, including the underthrown ball late for the INT. Agree that the coverage was too tight and that Love should've looked elsewhere. I think it's pretty important that the coaching staff fix this chemistry, whether it be timing, hitting Watson in space more frequently, getting Watson to use his height, etc. We've got talent here, but it's not materializing to the degree that it should be.

Even with all the "digestible loss" crap I said earlier, I look forward to the days where I can expect the Packers to win these kind of games again instead of hoping for a miracle. The offense has to learn to close the deal, but unfortunately the needed proficiency, at least on a consistent basis, doesn't come overnight.

Have we not seen the same thing in many games already this season? LV, Denver, now today? Love forces the ball, doesn't look the safety off? A Jones with few touches, even tho' I admit it wasn't his best performance of the year? Barry with his super soft defense and the rb's getting very few real holes to run? After all these weeks, where have we really improved?
If you think about it, won against NO because they missed a 40+ yd FG at very end of the game, beat Rams with their 3rd string qb, and the Bears are the Bears.....Poor drafting from 2016-2020, is why we are the 'young' team we are...next few weeks are not going to get easier....

Seeing a lot of comments in support of Love claiming he's being hamstrung by our young WRs, and veteran help would make him better, really? Would a veteran WR instantly improve Love's accuracy and decision making?
Maybe it's the other way round and the receivers aren't actually that bad. If they had a more talented veteran QB hitting them on time and in stride they might have better productivity.

Love had a good first 3 quarters. The two TD throws were genuinely beautiful. This was much more of the offense I thought we’d see coming into the season: flashes of brilliance, but mistakes from young players that keep them from winning games.

Unfortunately, the Love to Watson connection is just not working. The interception today was on Love, but the mutual struggles have really emphasized that the Packers are trying to develop a QB and a receiving corps simultaneously. It’s leading to balls being forced when they shouldn’t in inopportune situations. Can’t help but wonder how things might look with a reliable veteran receiver.

Overall, losing sucks, especially when you have a great chance to win. But the Packers did have some real bright spots today without hurting their draft position.

Offense is still learning how to win. Barry, I am done with!!! Two down lineman are driving me nuts!!!! I can't stand it. You play a running team and for the most part you play two down lineman. DONE WITH BARRY!!!

I just don’t like to see the ball being thrown to Watson in big moments. I think he’s more of a garbage time WR. He definitely shouldn’t be starting. His down the field speed isn’t important when your qb doesn’t throw the long ball well. If the Packers were in the thick of the wolf card race he’d probably be on IR.
I suppose this was our first moral victory this year. I still don’t and never will like this coaching staff. I know it’s a young team, but LaFleur is in his 5th year, and I’ve never seen anything that made me think he’s the guy. Rodgers was .. the guy. Now MLF and Joe Barry are in control. I still have hope for a 6 win season.

I would not say Watson is a "Garbage time" target. First off, I wouldn't say that about any player, period. But I digress.

What I would say is Watson should be a target of opportunity. If he shakes the coverage and it's a footrace between him and a deep safety trying to play from center field? Throw it. But I agree, I wouldn't be designing 'gotta have it' plays with Watson schemed as my primary target. It's just too much for him at the moment.

It would help Watson immensely to get him into regular short and medium routes- and hell, use his speed out of the back field occassionally on sprints, end arounds, etc- but his deep speed is a game changer and you do have to remind defenses you're not scared to throw it to him if he gets over the top. That opens up everybody.

But I agree.. I wouldn't make him a "go to" at this point in his career. Doubs is closer to that than Watson at this point, but really, they all need to mature.

I agree on Watson’s usage. I wish they’d get him running crossing routes more than over the shoulder.

Some positives and some negatives but no big surprises today. I think most of us are reasonable enough to be looking at this season as a developmental year. With that in mind, out of the 4 young WR's - Watson, Doubs, Reed, Wicks - I can see at least two of them should turn into the core of a nice WR room. If we also get the progress I expect (hope) from Musgrave, then 2024 or 2025 seasons will have to potential for a potent group.

But:
jury still out on Love,
we need to upgrade the O-Line
and we will need to replace Aaron Jones by then too.

Lots of progress and dropped balls. But when the game was on the line with 6 minutes I think, after we stopped the Steelers and the defense was getting tired, we get the ball back and proceed to give it right back. Tomln being no dummy starts running more leaving little time and no timeouts. The rest was as expected.

The Packers were in the game to the final play against a likely AFC playoff team. A bunch of young guys playing a bunch of veterans(excepting Pickett) and staying with them with a chance to win it on the other teams home turf.
Positives: Love is starting to look like an NFL QB, Z. Tom kept a future HOF'er off from Jordan Love, for the first time some effective running though not enough of it, the rest of the o-line was ok, good at times, Even Walker held is own but got drilled a couple of times. Musgrave is starting to get open, the corners played fairly well even though they're green as grass. Reed made some plays but he still has fumble fingers at times. I though MLF did a fairly good job calling plays though at times I have to scratch my head.

Negatives: A special teams mistake likely cost the Packers the chance to tie the game at the end. That stuff should not be happening this far into the season. Aaron Jones isn't playing as well as he can, though Dillon finally had the light go on. The run defense was bad most of the day. Not that much pressure on Pickett,
Watson is never going to be the bell-cow for the receiving corps. He rarely wins the contested catch and has had way, way too many drops this far in.

A young team slowly, and I mean slowly, starting to have the lights go on as to what it takes to play in the NFL. The problem is they could just as easily get blown out. The Chargers offense will test the defense a lot next week.

You might say Degaura’s half-assed blocking on the PAT cost them the game. Since it wasn’t the first time he’s sat still while defenders blow past him, you could also say it’s on Bisaccia or Lafleur or whoever insists on having Degaura out there.

The give up at the end of the first half angered me as well. The coach was asked about it and he said he was afraid of giving the ball back to the Steelers with time left. Talk about no confidence..oy

Well that makes sense. Not ! When you have a big lead, you dominated and don't want the other team to have anything to build on in the 2nd half, maybe . Clueless?

Kraft took Degaura’s spot on the FG unit in the second half, so there seems to be some notion of accountability on this team.

After the win over the Rams, some of the writers on this site were downplaying its significance. After all, backup QB and all that, so it was no big deal. Now, the team loses to the Steelers, who seem primed to copy the Vikings of last year, and eke out a lot of wins through smoke and mirrors, and we're supposed to be happy? Win or lose, this is my team. And at the end of the year, when it's time to determine who makes the post-season, no one cares which victories were barely won, and which were absolute blowouts. A win is always better than a loss.

The Packers have played better during the last 2 games. However they continue to defeat themselves with dropped passes, poor decisions and bad situational football. Jones of all people not running out of bounds with no timeouts during the final minute of the game WTF?

The Packers have lost 4 games this season by a total of 11 points. They could be 7-2 instead of 3-6 but penalties, dropped passes and poor decision making has cost them those 4 games. It is the price that is paid for a young, undisciplined team which the coaches don't seem to be helping at all.

The Packers are making progress but they have a long way to go. The next 3 games will provide a good indicator of how much progress the team has actually made. Thanks, Since '61

- there is a fine line often between playing to win and playing to not lose. Coach LaFleur crossed that line by folding up the tent with 1:20 and 2 time outs left.

- We’re the younger roster in the NFL. These kids are learning together on the fly. And we’re competitive most weeks. That’ll eventually turn into victories most weeks if we stay at the hard work, learn from the bad, grow from the good, and learn how to play NFL football together.

Youngest. Roster.

- Love reminded me of Favre and Rodgers today. Some Rodgers-esque dimes and some Favre-esque forced throws.

- my question isn’t if Love is the guy. My question is, is MLF the guy?

- would like to see E Wilson worked into the running back rotation a couple series a game.

Kansas City and Cincinnati are two teams that also have one of the younger rosters in the league. There's 18 teams in the league that average between 25.1-25.9 years of age. Packers was 25.0 last I knew. The difference isn't as big as some of you guys are making it. We just invested nothing on offense for years to run Aaron Rodgers out of town and now we're rebuilding. Just going to take time.

Packers: 25.0
Rams: 25.3
Bengals: 25.4
Colts: 25.4
