Grading the Pack - Week 2 - Vikings vs. Packers

A 29-29 tie wasn’t exactly what anybody wanted or what anybody expected, but here Green Bay stands at 1-0-1 and there seems to be quite a few unanswered questions that remain after the first two weeks of the season.

After two weeks of grading the games my biggest question is unequivocally the edge rusher position. I’m sure I’m not alone. After a brutal week one Clay Matthews improved but still lacked any consistent ability to get to the quarterback. At this point he looks like an inside linebacker trying to be an edge rusher.

Meanwhile Nick Perry hasn’t been much better and lacks any sort of creativity to get to the quarterback. It’s pretty much bull-rush or bust for Perry at this point and while he still holds up well at the point-of-attack on run defense, Green Bay is paying him to get to the quarterback and simply put… he’s not.

Reggie Gilbert has looked mostly pedestrian and we all know Kyler Fackrell isn’t the answer. It’s great that Green Bay has some quality interior linemen and a creative defensive coordinator, but at some point the edge rushers need to get to the quarterback.

Here’s how everything else looked in week two:

Top 3 Offensive Players

Aaron Rodgers +4.05
Lane Taylor +2.15
Bryan Bulaga +1.15

Top 3 Defensive Players

Jaire Alexander +1.65
Kenny Clark +0.8
Blake Martinez +0.4

Bottom 3 Offensive Players

Justin McCray -1.95
Lance Kendricks -0.05
Marcedes Lewis - Even

Bottom 3 Defensive Players

Kentrell Brice -1.95
HaHa Clinton-Dix -1.90
Davon House -1.70

Quarterback

Aaron Rodgers +4.05

A lot was made about Aaron Rodgers’ performance a week ago and deservedly so. If Rodgers doesn’t come back out of the locker room Green Bay probably loses by at least four touchdowns. Instead Rodgers comes back and has a legendary performance that will be remembered for a very long time.

While week one may have been the more memorable performance, week two graded out even better. The thing with Rodgers’ week one performance was that he only played a little over a quarter of really good football. This week Rodgers was consistent throughout the entirety of the game. Yes he fumbled the read option, and he missed the blitz on the following play, but it never should have made it to that point. For him to play hurt, against a very tough Vikings defense, get hit throughout the game, throw over 42 times, and perform the way he did was truly remarkable.

His stats were fine, but when you consider the drop by Davante Adams on the first drive, the Graham incompletion that should have been pass interference, the Davante Adams offensive pass interference call, and the Jimmy Graham touchdown that was called back via the phantom holding penalty, you start to realize that he played even better than the numbers indicated. All in all it was another gritty and impressive effort by the Packers’ MVP quarterback.

Running Back

Ty Montgomery +0.6
Jamaal Williams +0.6

First of all, Jamaal Williams gets an A+ for his pass blocking in this game. He was fantastic in that regard. As a running back Williams was inconsistent but had a couple of nice runs, and didn’t really add anything in the passing attack from a receiving standpoint.

Montgomery also held up well in pass-pro and was a bit more dynamic as a running back. Personally I’d like to see Montgomery ahead of Williams on the depth chart and ultimately Aaron Jones should get the bulk of the playing time going forward.

Wide Receiver

Davante Adams +1.1
Randall Cobb +0.55
Geronimo Allison +0.25
MVS +0.2

The receivers didn’t live up to their lofty week one performance this week but each had their moments. Davante Adams’ run after the catch to score the touchdown was amazing, and he had a couple of routes that he ran where he beat his man clean off the line but the ball just didn’t come his way.

Cobb was up and down and had difficulty uncovering at times but I thought he played a really solid game overall. He had a route that he ran out of the backfield that could have sealed the game if Rodgers would have seen him before throwing a completion to Kendricks in the flat.

Allison had an interesting game. On one hand he had six catches on six targets and had the nice run after the catch to pick up additional yardage (even though he probably should have been called down). On the flip side he struggled to uncover much more often this game and Minnesota didn’t have a ton of difficulty bottling him up. The big thing is that Allison came through when needed and when targeted, made every catch that came his way.

Tight End

Jimmy Graham +0.8
Marcedes Lewis +0.0
Lance Kendricks -0.05

This was a much more impressive game from Jimmy Graham and he actually had a couple of opportunities to even make a bigger impact. As a receiving tight end, Graham graded out much higher than his +0.8 score would indicate. Where he lost a lot of his points was in run blocking where unsurprisingly he continued to struggle. Green Bay may be better off using him as a decoy out wide than actually have him trying to block somebody lined up on the line of scrimmage.

Lewis had a couple of absolutely incredible blocks but also missed on a couple.

Offensive Line

Lane Taylor +2.15
Bryan Bulaga +1.15
David Bakhtiari +0.5
Corey Linsley +0.05
Justin McCray -1.95

Lane Taylor continues to be the best kept secret on the Packers and continues to perform at a high level. He’s not a force as a run blocker but he’s an incredibly consistent pass protector who teams well with David Bakhtiari on the left side of the line.

Speaking of Bakhtiari, he had another solid week this week but didn’t play up to his usual level. While he dominated Everson Griffen a season ago, Griffen was able to get the best of Bakhtiari on a couple of occasions in this game. When a bad day for Bakhtiari is a +0.5 grade it shows just how dominant a player he is.

I know there has been some concern with Bryan Bulaga and whether or not he’s up to the task coming back from his ACL injury, but I thought he played a really great game this past Sunday. He had some hiccups against Khalil Mack, which is understandable, and there were a few plays this game as well that he’d definitely like to have back; but to go against Khalil Mack and Danielle Hunter in his first two weeks when he wasn’t even supposed to be ready by this point is a very tough ask. Bulaga has received very little help and you could see him improve and shake some of the rust off from last week to this week.

Justin McCray is the weakest link by far on this offense and Lucas Patrick should be given a chance if they seem intent on not bringing back Jahri Evans. If Cole Madison had shown up to camp and played at the level he was capable of I think he would have been the starter by now.

Defensive Line

Kenny Clark +0.8
Mo Wilkerson +0.35
Dean Lowry +0.35
Mike Daniels +0.25
Montravius Adams -0.15

Kenny Clark continues to grade in the positive every week and he’s becoming better at working his way to the quarterback. I’m not sure he’s ever going to be a big time pass rusher but the fact he’s showing improvement is a great sign.

A part of the issue with the defensive line this week was simply a lot of snaps in the heat. I thought Clark and Wilkerson did a good job fighting through it as best they could but you could tell they were tired towards the end of the game.

Minnesota did a really nice job of using Mike Daniels’ aggressiveness against him and caught him on traps, draws, and whams. He struggled to gain any momentum in this game but still graded out positively overall.

Edge Rusher

Kyler Fackrell -0.05
Reggie Gilbert -1.15
Clay Matthews -1.2
Nick Perry -1.25

I pretty much said all there was to say about the edge rusher position to open the article. Green Bay has a serious problem at the moment at edge rusher and it’s tough to figure out how it’s going to turn around at this point. If I were Mike Pettine I’d consider using more of a four down-lineman look with Perry, Gilbert, Lowry, and Wilkerson rotating in at the edge. I’d move Clay to off-ball linebacker and let him blitz more than rush off the edge while allowing Clark, Daniels, and Adams to control the middle.

Linebacker

Blake Martinez +0.4
Korey Toomer -0.15
Antonio Morrison -0.6

Blake Martinez is off to a nice start but I still want to see him take the next step and become a true playmaker. Green Bay is in desperate need of playmakers on defense and it seems like it’s now or never for Martinez to take that next step. He’s played well, but now go find the football, force some fumbles, rack up some TFL’s, etc… If Martinez could take that next step it would be a real difference maker for the defense.

Cornerback

Jaire Alexander +1.65
Kevin King +0.3
Josh Jackson -0.8
Tramon Williams -1.4
Davon House -1.7

Two weeks in and Jaire Alexander has been my top graded defender both weeks. He has been nothing short of fantastic for a rookie in his first two games in the league. He is quick, tough, aggressive, and completely as advertised coming out of college. It’s very, very early but it looks like Brian Gutekunst hit big with his first ever draft choice.

Jackson had his ups and downs but showed some flaws in this game. It’s nothing concerning but he has some work to do on his assignments and making sure he’s in the right spot at the right time. His lack of long speed hurt him on a couple plays as well.

This game wasn’t meant for House or Williams. Both Diggs and Thielen were tough matchups for the outside corners and unless they were matched up against Treadwell it was a mismatch. There was a noticeable drop-off in the cornerback play as a whole when King went out of the game.

Safety

Jermaine Whitehead +0.2
HaHa Clinton-Dix -1.9
Kentrell Brice -1.95

Usually Pro Football Focus and I aren’t too incredibly off on our evaluations for the week, but we couldn’t disagree more on the play of HaHa Clinton-Dix. I thought HHCD lacked hustle, heart, aggression, and instincts. I couldn’t have been more uninspired by his play. There were multiple times where he misdiagnosed a play or took a passive approach. I seriously question at times if Clinton-Dix fears tackling in the open field. If you ever get a chance, watch how many times in a game that HaHa backpedals at the end of the play. He rarely comes up aggressively to make a tackle. I’m a full believer at this point that Clinton-Dix is a player that is holding back this defense and that Green Bay would be better off going in another direction, even if that meant Jones or Whitehead taking his spot.

Kentrell Brice was heavily involved in two of the biggest plays of the game. On the bomb to Stefon Diggs he has to know the game situation. Davon House was lined up on the outside one-on-one with the much faster Diggs and it was obvious House (who was also very at fault during the play) was expecting inside help. Brice instead chose to help on Laquon Treadwell, Minnesota’s slowest receiver, who was covered well already by Jaire Alexander. If Laquon catches the pass over the smaller Alexander it’s a contested catch and maybe a 20-25 yard gain. If Diggs catches it, it goes for a touchdown and changes the game completely. It was a poor decision to have House on Diggs in the first place, and a poor play on House’s part, but Brice needs to understand the situation and make a better decision and play in that scenario.

Brice was also involved in the Thielen touchdown with Alexander in coverage. If Brice takes a better angle, and/or makes a better play on the ball, he may have not only been able to break-up the pass, but possibly even intercept it. While Brice was McCarthy’s highest graded player in week one, he was one of the lowest graded players for me, in week two.

Friday Film Room:

Today on the Friday Film Room we will focus on the following players:

Nick Perry -1.25
Kenny Clark +0.80
Jimmy Graham +0.80
Kentrell Brice -1.95

Jaire Alexander +1.65
Josh Jackson -0.80

How I Grade

  • Each player starts by getting a zero or neutral grade on a play. If they performed as expected on a play, their grade stays at zero.
  • For a slightly above or below average play, the player gets graded -0.1 or +0.1. The vast majority of grades on the vast majority of plays are graded -0.1, 0, or +0.1.
  • The highest and lowest grades on an individual play are +2.0 and -2.0 respectively. These would be large, game-changing plays.
  • I won’t grade a play negatively if I cannot tell which player was at fault.
  • Most of the time it’s difficult to tell the play, so I’m not grading on the execution of the play call as an NFL coach would.
  • The goal of this exercise is to grade every snap over the course of the season to get a long-term view of which performers are performing well and which are not meeting expectations. This is very similar to what Pro Football Focus tries to achieve. Is it perfect? No. But what you are getting is a consistent grader who is watching specifically Packer games and putting multiple hours into every week to breakdown film and assign grades.
  • Grades are for offense and defense only (including two point conversions). Special teams does not factor in.

The best description I have of Clinton Dix so far is spectator. His play has steadily digressed from a couple of years ago. He doesn't seem decisive or willing to engage while "tackling". Very passive play. This is a bad look for a safety. Something is going on there and I don't know what it is.

I know what it is. Dix is just a bad football player. I really wish they had extended Burnett and let Dix become a free agent. His tackling form looks like something from a clown show and he lacks any instincts as a safety, just look at the clip above. That is a high school level mistake.

As always, Awesome work Andy.

BTW, we all know about the famous calls by the refs in this game. But I was curious, since it is clear you've watch this game more time than anyone without an NFL salary, if you have an opinion on what was the overall level of officiating?

I go back to an article in Packer Report where HHCD worked for judge during the summer as an intern. The following year was horrible and this year is similar. Could he be avoiding injury after football?

I thought the same thing many times. I do believe it's related to him working with as an intern with the judge. He's saving himself in many respects. He's received sound advice from someone but it certainly doesn't help out on the battle field.

Helping a judge. Sitting at a desk shuffling paperwork. Really? If I were him I would lay it all out if knowing a desk job is in his future. Good grief.

I have not had a chance to rewatch this game and probably won't at this point, however the more I see of the Packers OL and DL play the better I feel about both groups and our chances for this season.

Mcgray is our weak spot on the OL and maybe Patrick should be given a shot at some point. But otherwise I think we look solid on the OL. The DL should only get better as the season goes on.

Matthews continues to prove my point about taking himself out of plays just about every week. CM3, Dix and Perry are 3 of our highest paid defenders and we are getting just about nothing from them for their salary levels. I realize that Gute can't fix everything in one season but I'd rather give more snaps to Gilbert, who at least plays hard, than MIA Perry and runs out of the play Matthews.

At safety we have Dix in La La Land and Brice who just isn't that good. Maybe we play King (if healthy), and Jackson on the boundary with Alexander in the slot. Put Josh Jones and Twill at safety and get Burks back at ILB. This should give us better coverage and make us faster overall behind the DL. We could use Brice and Dix in dime packages. Either way something needs to change at OLB and safety.

If we stay healthy on offense we're going to be more than fine. With Aaron Jones and our OL getting more in sync every week I'm expecting to see MM open up this offense a little more each game and use the versatility available with our RBs and TEs, especially when AR gets back to 100%. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Check the snap counts then Since 61' Perry and Gilbert are both in the 80's while CM3 is in the 110s. We can't shift Williams to safety until King is back otherwise we have House, Jackson, Alexander.

I've given up at OLB for 2018. I'm hoping that in 2019 we draft some edge rushing talent. My hope for the pass rush is that Pettine let's Burks and Josh Jones loose and we use speed to overwhelm the OL combined with the power from our DL.

Brice is inexperienced. Highest grade to lowest grade in a week indicates potential but no consistency. This is not unusual with safeties, who typically take time to come into their own.

True, Coldworld. And I do think the defense needs time to gel (referring to a comment above about Capers not having access to CBs the caliber of Alexander, Jackson, Tramon, and having King only half time).

After the Chicago game, some people suggested we did not need to bring in Reid because Brice was perfectly capable. I noted that Brice has issues with coverage, that he should shine against teams with bad QBs like Trubisky, and I'd wait to see how he does against good QBs. Could be Brice has potential but just needs experience. Could be he lacks cover skills. So, I guess he is going to get a chance to develop while starting for us.

" I realize that Gute can't fix everything in one season but I'd rather give more snaps to Gilbert, who at least plays hard, than MIA Perry and runs out of the play Matthews."

Normally I would say it's because MM stubbornly has to bring everything along methodically but glacially slow. But the more I think about it, Pettine must be following the overiding philosophy of caution in response to our recent epidemics of hamstring, broken bones and myriad other injuries over the last several years, certainly understandable.

As for me, like the Offense, I'm pedal to the metal with whoever can help us win now. With only 16 games why hold back on utilizing some of the better players who have shown something or were brought here to fill a need. using Wins are hard enough to come by. Play Jones,Gilbert,Lewis, Jackson, as much you can.

It's a contract year, I think he's saving his body for the big score. What good is great tape if at the end of the day when its time to negotiate your a hobbled mess. If he really is good and is holding back I expect he gets more aggressive and decisive as the season wears on. Otherwise, maybe he really has regressed and Pettine has to do something about it.

" CM3, Dix and Perry are 3 of our highest paid defenders and we are getting just about nothing from them for their salary levelsi "

I mentioned the WAR stat that baseball uses a few times hoping that it would help some understand my dislike of Perry, Matthews the last 3 years and what I hope the FO understands when contract talks for Dix comes.
You never pay for nothing and you should never continue to pay for nothing, especially when getting nothing is so blatantly clear.
This seasons failure will come from the linebacker group. I know many look at Gilbert as being this or that but unless the others play much better, he'll get washed out.
When your highest paid at a position is reproduced by _____ there is no reason to retain or not try to get out from continued payment to said highest paid player(s).
I would not be surprised to see Perry appear this week as he did vs Wash last time, 3 useless sacks early and then disappear again for 3 games or until after the bye week. Matthews reining himself in will result n a hammy as he hurts himself trying not to play with reckless abandonment...not hoping for it just accepting the possibility.
Hope the FO really thinks hard on Dix as we don't need another Perry deal with the reason being...we had no choice to sign him. Many here agreed with that thinking, not I, and how has that worked out to date.
This was to be a comment to Since 61'

Pettine likes his safeties we were told, and he's got HHCD and Brice. Back in March on APC's Armchair GM fan post, I dumped Burnett and rescinded HHCD's fifth-year option. I used HHCD's $6M cap savings (no dead money) to sign Boston and Reid. Folks wrote that is why Gute became GM and not Russ Ball, and that I just couldn't resist the low-hanging fruit that was HHCD's contract due to my obsession with the cap. I couldn't rule out that obsession bit. When Burnett signed for a modest amount, I had pause about releasing him but the rules didn't allow me to put him on my roster.

I have always been underwhelmed by HHCD, even in his pro bowl year. He looked to me like he should be a strong safety, not an FS. I thought there was a place on the team for Brice but not as the starter.

Just as a thought: when TT was in everyone's good graces he really was very good at moneyball, and there were a lot of articles about that aspect.

TT had Tramon for a couple of seasons playing excellent football at a premier position, saving big bucks. Then Shield played well for four seasons at a cheap rate. Then Bahk played LT cheaply for four seasons. I know his rookie season wasn't spectacular but even an okay LT makes good money in the NFL. Then Linsley played well for very little money, though as a center the savings weren't as large as for the CBs and LT. And he got nice play out of another 4th-round pick in Daniels for 2 of his first 4 years. Hyde and Tretter gave us some nice surplus value, but neither really was a big hit in GB notwithstanding what they've done elsewhere.

Lately, there haven't been as many Moneyball success stories. Clark has played well, but then, first round picks are supposed to contribute year one and then supply surplus value (though Clark looks like a triple or home run). Martinez too. Ryan to a much lesser extent.

Pettine may be good but so far the D doesn't look much different that Caper's D, aside from Alexander and Jackson looking good. The vaunted D line is just OK, the OLBs are as terrible as always, the inside LB's lack speed or instinct, and the safeties are horrible. Just awful. I blame Gute, despite what I thought was a good draft, for being very TT like in not fixing what we all saw as weaknesses at OLB and safety. I'll someday get over letting a likely future Hall of Famer, at our position of greatest need, go the Bears when we should have trumped their offer, but it will take time. It's already showing itself as the Bear D is quickly developing into one of the league's best while we're still stuck with QB's easily standing in the pocket picking us apart. This D will not carry us to a SB. How does the staff look at the tape of Ha Ha and keep him on the field? He needs to be benched, if at least to be taught that his passive play won't be tolerated. But McCarthy has always been slow to recognize weakness. My biggest hope was that Gute would at least force his hand by replacing weak links. He hasn't, except for CB. Eric Reid should have been in a Packer uniform for game one, and he's still out there. I hate this attitude of next year we'll draft our pass rusher. What about this year? We almost lost to the Bears and lost a half game to the Vikings because of these weaknesses at OLB and safety, that we all can see. They're not going away and need to be dealt with sooner rather than later or more wasted years of Rodger's career.

So, do I have to utter the blasphemy? Would Capers have done worse if he had had Alexander, Jackson, and Tramon available? I could add Brice to that list for the Brice-lovers: Brice went on IR after what, 5 games last year, so he was unavailable to Capers for most of the season. The stats are worse this season so far than the stats for 2017 as a whole. Small sample size, but we played one below average offense and one above average offense so far.

Give Pettine’s D time to gel. If it has not improved by mid season, then one can debate whether it is lack of improvement at coordinator or lack of resources at OLB.

As I pointed out last year(OK more like shaking my fist to the wind) losing your entire starting and core DB after the viking game wipes out your defense, and pretty much takes your team out of the playoff race. At that point, the issue was out of Capers hands. We have not seen the new defensive scheme fully deployed, nor have do we fans really know who are the core players in this green bay defense. We will not have a clear picture until mid season(pro football in the 'Goodell' era). There are signs that this could be a really good defense, if the defense stays healthy(this being a pretty thin group overall). I have been a Capers defender, his ability to adapt in the face of massive rule changes in the current era was impressive. I will always argue the the packer defense from 2014-2017 was far underrated, and their performance in the second half of those season was the biggest factor the packers playoff runs. I still think the defense of 2016 with Burnett and Hyde anchoring the secondary was some of the finest coaching in football that year. Overall, it just to early to make judgements about this team yet.

Dix's continual decline is so disappointing to me... he's a superb athlete and I think he has the instincts to be special but I don't think he has the drive.

I also think the Gute and team have made it clear to his agent they are not resigning him so in his head he doesn't want to get injured for the team since they don't see him as a long term plan. Whatever his contract will be It sure as heck won't line up to his production.

HHCD has to put some good play on tape if he wants a nice contract from someone, anyone. There is no sense in holding back.

I didn't buy HHCD's reason for missing minicamp and voluntary camp. I did bring it up, but several posters virtue signaled to show what fine people they are and what a terrible person I must be. There is something wrong at any rate. HHCD can play better than he has. It is up to the coaches to figure out how to coax it out of him.

I cannot for the life of me imagine why Gutekunst is doing nothing to improve the LB and safety positions. There are FA's still available out there and virtually every team in the NFL has a LB on their practice squads, and many have safeties. Can they honestly say that none of them are any better than what the Packers currently have on their roster?

Personally, as promising as our secondary is...with the exception of Ha Ha, I would just go get Defensive Ends next year. You don’t need hybrid OLBs when you’ve got good Inside linebackers, good D line and a good secondary. Just straight up one job description pass rushers. Currently I don’t think there are a lot of free agent OLBs or Defensive ends out there right now.

Great job as usual. My only admonition is that you used the same play with Monty over and over. And it was a three TE set. Graham did ok, Kendricks blocked ok and Lewis did great. Also the center pulled. It’s almost like a new “Packers sweep”. It’s the play many of the fans have called for. I wonder if we are going to see more of it as the year goes on?

Kind of sad if this is what it's come to. Can the Packers truly be successful again with Thompson & McCarthy around, or is it finally time to move on and give someone else a chance to bring success to Lambeau Field?
