Four Things That Will Change as a Result of Allen Lazard’s Injury

Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard had surgery earlier this week to treat a core muscle injury. He will be out of the lineup for at least a month and possibly much longer.

The timing was bad for Lazard who just had a career-best game against the Saints, catching six passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. The former Iowa State star had clearly established himself as WR2 in the Packers offense and will likely reclaim that spot when he returns to the field.

Until then, the Packers offense will have to adjust and create game plans without some of their biggest weapons. Here is a look at four changes we will see because of Lazard’s absence:

1. The Packers Other Wide Receivers Have a Chance to Prove Themselves

With Davante Adams already having missed a game because of a hamstring injury and Equanimeous St. Brown on the injured reserve, the Packers are clearly thin at the receiver position. Adams’ status for the Week 4 contest against Atlanta is still up in the air but the Packers have indicated they want to be careful with Adams, knowing it is a long season.

As a result, the Packers other receivers will have a big chance to show what they can do. If Adams is out of the lineup against Atlanta, Marquez Valdes-Scantling will be WR1. In Week 3, the Saints were concerned about MVS beating them deep and they were able to shut down the speedy receiver. As a result, Valdes-Scantling was a non-factor in the offense, finishing the game with just one catch for five yards.

MVS will need to step up and assume a much larger role than he’s ever had in the NFL. Even if Adams plays on Monday night, Valdes-Scantling will be WR2.

The other active receivers on the roster, Darrius Shepherd and Malik Taylor, will now get more reps than they have seen thus far. Between them, they have one career reception for minus-one yards although that is likely to change very soon.

Tyler Ervin will also see more reps at receiver. He is someone Aaron Rodgers is familiar with and trusts.

Shepherd and Taylor have a chance to show what they can do and to make an impression on the coaching staff in a game situation. Can they win the trust of Rodgers and Matt LaFleur? We shall see. If they perform well, this could be the start of their NFL futures. If not, they may not get that many more opportunities to step into the lineup.

Equanimeous St. Brown is eligible to return from the IR after the Packers bye week and he will have to hit the ground running and contribute as soon as he is able to play again.

It will be interesting to see how the Packers coaching staff game plans with these new receivers in the lineup and whether they’ll develop plays that are tailored to their strengths.

2. The Tight Ends Will Catch More Passes

The Packers have never hesitated to line some tight ends up wide in a formation and treat them almost like another wide receiver. We may see more of that tactic until the depth at wide receiver improves again.

Look for Robert Tonyan and Jace Sternberger to see more targets in the next few weeks as the receiver position is thin.

The Packers offense is designed to create “the illusion of complexity” by running extremely different plays from identical formations and with identical personnel. We will see how this manifests itself on Monday night.

Tonyan and Sternberger got more targets against the Saints. Look for this to continue against Atlanta.

3. The Running Backs Will Get More Involved in the Passing Game

The Packers are fortunate to have three running backs (if you count Tyler Ervin) who are strong receivers out of the backfield. Expect the coaching staff to utilize them even more in the passing game depending on the situation and the opponent.

Against the Saints, Aaron Jones had just four targets and two catches, but he was a bigger part of the passing game against Detroit and will probably get more touches in the next few weeks.

Jamaal Williams isn’t the home run threat Jones is, but he is reliable, tough and consistent. Ervin is dangerous in space and can make defenders miss to turn short passes into longer gains.

The Packers will throw more to their backs until the receivers return to better health.

4. The Packers May Run More

With a thin receiving corps, the Packers will likely run the ball a little more than usual, but not a lot. Jones, Williams and perhaps A.J. Dillon will get a chance to keep the chains moving on the ground that they may not have normally done.

The offense will try to stay as close to normal as possible but running the ball a little bit more frequently is likely a result of Lazard’s absence, especially in the short term.

If Adams can’t go on MNF, I expect the Packers to lean heavily on Jones. Possibly use Jones as a decoy and give more touches to Ervin. I would also expect more 2 TE sets including Lewis and Deguara for blocking while rotating Tonynan and Sternberger in as well.
If Adams plays even as a decoy that changes everything and opens up the offense for our other skill players.

Our defense will need to step up in this game to contain Julio Jones and Ridley. We should not enable this game to become a shootout.

If we’re playing with a lead in the 2nd half I hope to see some ball control, clock chewing with Dillon and Williams in a ground and pound mode. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

The Packers are surprisingly (well, maybe not so surprising considering their talent at RB) effective in pro sets. This reminds me of another Falcons game, where Monty was forced into the backfield by injuries and was able to shine in their Cobra package. I expect to see a lot of touches given to the RB group, who will line up all over the field, with TEs very involved in the game as blockers and as short/medium yardage receivers. I wouldn't be surprised to see bunch sets without a single true WR, or possibly a few uses of the Navy triple option with Deguara (or more likely) Lovett acting as the FB.

Maybe we’ll run more and pass less. I do expect that a central feature of the offensive game plan against Atlanta involves controlling the ball and the keeping Atlanta’s offense off the field, so I would think that Jones, Williams, Ervin and even Dillon could get the ball a lot.

The Falcons have a decimated secondary that wasn’t good to start off with in the eyes of many. I think we will run, but I think the passing game will be important as well.

The Packers ran a lot of sweep and end around looks last week without actually using it. I would expect to see Ervin or MVS featured there this week of they can catch Atlanta off guard or get some of their speedsters in space.

I think the biggest positive here is that the Packers offense is already so diverse that losing a WR doesn't necessarily need to change their game plan all that much - the TE and RB group are already very involved in the passing game, and while Lazard has also shown he can throw some blocks downfield, the Packers have enough depth at TE that they can throw 2-3 on the field and create all sorts of questions about who is a receiver vs. a designated blocker.

True, they ran a lot of "sweep action" last week, but you give that look several times to set it up for one or two reps.

Right. We also saw a lot of stretch plays where the whole team pulled left and the ball went into the flat to a TE on the right. The Falcons will be expecting that and will crash down on anyone pulling right on bootlegs, which opens things up for the guys on the left that were previously decoys.

If you go back to the Pats game Brissett started, it almost looked like an Army/Navy offense, and they were definitely using those end arounds as a staple if their running game. I think you could see some of that this week in the passing game with pitches out to the counter guy, delayed draws after the motion, and then some true touch passes to the guy going across the formation.

It seems almost counter productive to say this considering GB/ATL is usually an ariel matchup but you could see more grinding it out on this one.

It is a RE-REMARK. Run more pass less sounds like run a greater% than pass. What rubs folks is a generational passer should not hand off more than throw per say. ML's offense is perfectly matched to the personnel that is assembled by the packers. It would work even better with 2- burner WR's on the field at the same time clearing out the secondary and allowing for RB's and TE's to do their thing. Rodgers is invigorated in the offense and it is clicking. Really a thing of deadly beauty. It is like the offense in hurry up all the time with players moving around all the time to perfection. I like it a lot. Our OL is doing great, our TE's have started to take off and our WR's are doing well, and our RB's are doing well also. Our Defense.....well, they have been good enough to not lose any games, Yet. Pettine better start using all these xtra DB's to blitz a lot more often if we want 3 and outs on a consistent basis. Our pass rush is not close to what it was last year. Maybe when Clark is back and 100 % and we get some ILB's back we will be descent there also.

Now the PATRIOTS vs CHIEF's game is postponed. Yikes, all the happiness I was experiencing watching the NFL these past few weeks kind of helped me forget about the damn pandemic! Now the old worries about the season being wiped out are creeping back into my mind.

Somehow MLB has gotten thru and I remember thinking there was no way they could get their season in without a "bubble". Geez, I hope the NFL (and of course the rest of us) can get through this.

I sincerely hope clubs and players see this as a wake up call and do a better job isolating on their off days - if there is another week where multiple games need to be postponed I would expect to see a 1-2 week shutdown to try to limit the spread and a removal of all fans at all games. There are a LOT more people involved in an NFL game over an MLB, NHL, or NBA game, and it is going to fall on every club member from the players to the QA assistants and broadcast gophers to get smarter and more careful NOW to avoid a season ending outbreak.

"Somehow MLB has gotten thru and I remember thinking there was no way they could get their season in without a "bubble"."

MLB had a couple gaffes and slips early on, but that reinforced the need for players and management to be more vigilant...or at least it seems that way. The paychecks are pretty important.

Football is the toughest of the 4 major team sports to play and safely social distance. There will be bumps along the way, no doubt, but hopefully the NFL can find a way to safely play the season. A bubble or a few bubbles would be better for player safety but the NFL chose not to go that route. I hope they can play the entire season. Thanks for the comment, NitschkeFan.

Is there any indication that EQ is likely to be healthy enough to resume training soon? Eligible isn’t the same as available.

Secondly, EQ didn’t do much in camp and hasn’t played in a year. Do we have a basis for assuming he can just drop in to a different offense from the one he played in during his rookie year?

Finally, are we even sure he is currently next up after Adams, Lazard, MVS?

Maybe he is, but I think the EQ thing is highly speculative as a putative solution absent more information. We run with whom we have on Monday, and go from there.

When we return from the bye week after Atlanta, Adams MSV, and EQ should all be ready to go.

I’m assuming we’ll call up guys like Shepherd from the practice squad, and Lazard will be ready before the playoffs. Remember, it was only about a year ago that Lazard was a practice squad guy so maybe this will be a sequel.

If Adams and MSV can stay healthy and play well for a couple of games while Lazard is out, we can weather this.

Have not heard how close EQ is to being a healthy return. What EQ had going for him was height, speed, good hands and good route running before injurie(s). That being said the Packers knew who they had in him. If he still has those factors along with health will have to be shown. One thing he has not shown is reliably ready to play. Let's hope he has better fortunes ahead. He has potential to be a WR 2-3 if he can stay on the field. We have a lot of talent at every running and receiving area of the offense. We are better off than most. ML offensive design is set up to exploit any level of a defense thru mis direction and matchups. ML has improved immensely in play design and use of personnel. Just need Dillon to do something and I'd feel we are complete in that aspect. ML is worried about Dillon pass protection and doesn't want to run him out there and everyone knows it's a run because he doesn't have ML's confidence in pass pro yet.

He is in a different offense than he played in during his rookie year, but he's been studying it for more than a year and a half now which hopefully is something. Wondering when or if Begelton is ready or Foster. I'm sure we'll see them if needed.

Saying that EQ was a "non-factor in the offense" against NO may not be completely accurate. Since the coverage was being tilted to make sure he wasn't going to be a factor, it freed up Lazard to have a career day. Similar to when Adams had a great game against the Patriots in 2014. Sometimes being a decoy is a big help to the offense. It just doesn't show up on the stat sheet.

I understand what you mean, ricky and yes, the Saints did tilt their coverage towards MVS and it did free up Lazard. I think the Packers will be OK. It would be helpful if Adams or Deguara play. But one of the WR's will need to step up. One thing that Lafleur can do is scheme to get guys open. It will be interesting which concepts Lafleur uses. The mesh type crossers or the behind the scrimmage crossers to keep moving the chains. I would like to see Ervin get a chance with some of these crossers to get him into space. I think MVS will be doubled to take away the long ball. And I expect Atlanta to play alot of zone because of their talent shortfall in the secondary. Oh what will LaFleur do??

If MVS is doubled, as I also expect if Adams is out, it will be interesting to see how they use Taylor. Taylor has times as fast as MVS. Been a long time since a Packers team has had that much speed,

Interesting to see how teams use their DBs and how we use Shepherd and the TEs. One way or another, could be a lot of space behind with that speed or some very big plays if they go one-on/one on on either. That will likely open the run game too.

The best thing is that MLF now has options.
I expect Adams and Lewis to sit and Deguara to take up the blocking TE role.
Shep will be a slot more like Cobb and probably not have blocking duties. MVS as decoy.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that Lazard rated as an excellent blocker among NFL WRs (Allison was, for all his other shortcomings, a very good blocker, too). RIght now, the Packers don't have a WR active who rates near those guys in blocking ability. Maybe it doesn't meaningfully change the offense, but blocking WRs are pretty important on outside zone runs.

I’m hoping that Tonyan can fill that niche in part. He is able to run many WR routes. In theory not much slower. No knock on Sternberger, but I think he would be better used as a classic TE.

Post script: with Lewis designated as doubtful, Sternberger is probably playing his role.

LaFleur loves WRs who can run block because it adds to the diversity of his offense. Lazard's absence will hurt. Kumerow was another WR who was a very good run blocker but obviously, he's now on Buffalo's practice squad. We will see what kind of effect this has on the running game this week and beyond. Dobber and I were talking about this just this morning:

The TEs and RBs are going to have to pick up the slack. The remaining WRs on the roster are just not NFL level talent. One might step up, and we'd better hope so. We'd also better hope that Adams doesn't get hurt again. Core muscle injuries tend to last throughout a season.

Not appetizing options, certainly. I expect a return to sulky ARod and holding the ball and sacks at some point soon. Heavy FF targeting for Adams, certainly.

I’m not sure what we have in terms of receivers, though I have been impressed with Shepherd in practice. We may yet be surprised by what we have. One way or another, we are going to find out. Patrick May be at C, Turner left guard and Wagner back at RT or Runyon at RG.

Given the injury report, we may not have Ervin and Lewis as well as Deguara and Adams. On D, Alexander could not be ready and thus we may see Jackson. We already know there are rookies at ILB. Clark is not certain or Gary.

Of course all the questionable might play, but it could be a more unusual and unpredictable game for the wrong reasons. It will be intriguing to see how the 2 empty roster spots are filled and when and whether and whom we elevate. I’m assuming they will wait on the latter till the last minute to see who can go.

I don't know if the Packers are sure what they have at WR now. Shepherd looked so good in 2019's preseason and camp last year and this. Hopefully, when he sees action on the field now he isn't as overwhelmed as he seemed last year against Detroit. This may be his last chance to step up and shine.
So many guys are injured throughout the Packers lineup and really league wide. The two roster spots will tell us where the needs are so it will be interesting to see how they fill them and who they designate as active this week from the practice squad. That means four more players can be added to the roster before gametime Monday night. Thanks for the comment.

I don't really think you can speak to the core injury.
I'm a physical therapist and the core muscles are not just the stomach muscles. They include the internal and external hip rotators--which was Tonyan's core injury, to an adductor muscle and not a stomach muscle--as well as numerous other muscles that you might not think are core related.

To say that it always lasts a season is completely false.

Of course, in the modern NFL, there is no specificity (or in any sport, as people on fan sites were also making ludicrous claims about Jimmy Nelson's "rotator cuff'" injury as if they thought it was a single muscle, when the rotator cuff is in fact 4 separate muscles with 4 wholly different movements and it absolutely made a difference which one or two of them he tore; it would have been worse to tear the one for the throwing motion than the one Nelson tore by jamming his arm back into the socket sliding into the bag).

So, as a courtesy to a real professional, please don't speak of things you don't understand fully. Which core muscle and how severely torn matters here. The fact that surgery could be performed immediately, without waiting for swelling to go down as in knee and ankle injuries, is a very, very good sign. It means that the damage was fairly clean and easily repaired.

I have no doubt he will be back in 6 weeks and performing at nearly the same level (and even at 80%, he's better than most of the WRs we have).

That’s only funny because it’s true.

I was looking at our offensive weaponry and it’s a pile of Last Day picks on a rookie contract and UDFAs. Jones, Williams, Lazard, Ervin, Lazard, MSV, EQ, Tonyan. I think it’s testimony to the play design and blocking and an argument against the need to spend big money on weaponry.

I think it really helps to have a very good throw and catch combo, and we spend plenty on Rodgers to Adams, and it’s worth it.

For his part, Rodgers has handled the ball about two hundred times, and we haven’t had a turnover and we score on most of our drives. We have more long TDs than anybody. And he isn’t getting hit.

After the first three games, this is one of the best offenses I’ve ever seen in a half-century. And it’s not because we have flashy high dollar weapons, but because of the blocking and execution, especially by our leader. He does so many things out there to sell the misdirection that I really don’t see how you defend this offense right now.

It's been great to watch this offense click so well this year. And everybody seems to be taking a turn at being the focus. Week 1 was Adams, Week 2 Jones and Week 3 Lazard and the TEs. Rodgers has been great this year as he gets more comfortable with the offense. It's really been great and can still get better. Thanks Leatherhead.

Yes it's true and why I wrote it. My sense of humor. Not everyone makes the right pick in the draft, that's for sure. Hey, last year our offense always started slow and was inconsistent. ML and Rodgers are working great together. Quite a positive change. We have a bunch of guys just doing their jobs and executing well on nearly every play on offense. We have a TEAM concept on offense. Defense is slower to turn the ship but injuries take a toll and not changing the DL / ILB scheme for the run and not blitzing safeties are the problems there. It has worked well enough so far but only because we are putting up a lot of points on offense and got a few turnovers by defense. Jaire almost had another pic that would have made the end of the N.O game less exciting.

Sometimes it feels like we've worked out half the UDFA receivers available. Thanks for the comment, PhantomII.

Thanks Gil. The Packers believe in order to defeat your quarry you have to turn over every rock in it and see what's under it. Well with all the xtra Roster/ IR / Practice squad help the NFL has given us might as well. I'm more like find the team with the best DL and snipe a practice squad DT or best WR group and get a WR off their practice squad who can't quite remove a pro bowler from their roster and get him.

The Packers usually draft at least one per year, this year being an exception. Our depth is definitely being tested right now. Thanks for the comment, Lphill.

I hope so too. I guess Crosby could punt in an pinch but I think they'd sign a punter for a game if Scott can't go. Thanks for the comment, Grimm.

....reliable, tough and consistent. . Williams is all that and is as much of a receiver as Jones.

We'll be ok this week.

I think Williams is naturally better as a receiver, although Jonrs has come on.

Williams does great on checkdowns and designed screens. Jones has shown some real chops lining up as a true WR. They each have strengths MLF can play to, and I think we will see both on full display tomorrow.

Love watching Jamaal do his thing. Williams is probably a better receiver than Jones, just not as dangerous after the catch. I think you're right, we'll be OK. Thanks for the comment, Tundraboy.

This is exactly why BG lived off his his last draft, and made the wrong off season moves. The draft process started with looking for LBs and WRs. But BG signed a injury prone ILB. And a RT that now sits the bench. A Wr that sits out the season. Spending 16 mil +, that could have been used on his own. It's like buying America products first! But why trust Rookies? Obviously it's now " Screw your own first." So now were living on Rodgers and prayers again. Well first, MVS is the 2nd WR. Remember the beating of the drum. It's time he uses his opportunity to show up, period! Two, Trusting Summers. Much rather trust him then Kirksey or Burks now. BG never paid the price. The whole NFL knows, you need a good ILB if your DL sucks. Lets face it. BGs numbers and draft have hurt this teams chances to return to glory. It's on Rodgers and LeFluer now. And a bunch of Free Agents that won't be here next year. Straight ahead it's Super bowl or bust. But if you only care about development. Then BG is your man. Enjoy the merry go round.

I wasn't thrilled with some of the offseason choices, but the Pack is 16-3 in the last 19 regular season games. We're 3-0 right now despite a lot of injuries. BG is obviously doing something right although we'll see if these moves hurt the team or help it a few years down the road. Thanks for the comment, stockholder.

Gil seems like a pretty good dude. Always nice and get's his point across. He also nearly always returns the comment back. Something missing from most Writers on this board by and far. Sorry you are having a bad day.

Wow Spike, hopefully you are shooting for sarcasm, with an obviously failed result. Otherwise, you are the biggest bottomhole on the thread.

Gil has been courteous to every commenter. He was even complimentary of your comment above when you were lying about being a physical therapist.

Any chance Begelton gets taken off the practice squad and put onto the roster, for the Falcon's game?

Definitely a chance depending on who's available. Not sure how ready he is and whether another practice squad player (Foster maybe) would be elevated before him. We shall see what Gute does. Thanks for the comment, mrtundra.

Begelton has the most impressive biceps I have ever seen on a WR. May or may not be a good NFL WR but sure has the build and then some.
