Former Packers Personnel Assistant John Dorsey Named PFWA Exec of the Year

In just his first year as general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, former Green Bay Packers personnel assistant John Dorsey was named NFL Executive of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America on Thursday.

The Chiefs were tied for the worst record in the league in 2012, and Dorsey made successful personnel moves on all levels. His trade for quarterback Alex Smith helped to stabilize the offense. He also drafted tackle Eric Fisher with the No. 1 overall pick, who started 13 games. He also made several low-profile free-agent moves that helped the Chiefs race out to a 9-0 start on the way to an 11-5 record and an AFC playoff berth for the first time since 2010. The nine-game turnaround was the greatest one-season turnaround in club history.

In the front office, Dorsey hired Chris Ballard as the Chiefs’ director of player personnel, Will Lewis as director of pro scouting and Marvin Allen as director of college scouting.

Dorsey is the second Chiefs staffer to earn the PFWA’s Executive of the Year award, which began in 1993. Scott Pioli won the 2010 award.

STFU... Compre Datone to Muhammad Wilkerson one of the best 34DE in the NFL. Datone had 3.5 sacks in limited playing time. Wilkerson had 3 sacks and started 16 games as a rookie. Then had 5 in yr 2 and 10.5 this yr.

Expect similar for Datone! F'in Troll!!!

Sure, Stroh. Not a troll in the slightest. But nice work using a relatively useless stat (sacks) as your factual backing. Classic. Why didn't you tell me how many tackles he had? Because that's another useless stat? Or because he somehow managed only 10 of them the entire year?

Unlike like the true trolls, I actually hope that Datone proves me wrong. However, D. Jones graded out as the 6th worse DE out of 62 DE's that play in the 3/4. Doesn't inspire confidence. And neither does TT's draft record on high D-line picks.

Stroh - How have these high D-line picks that TT drafted panned out?

1) Jerel Worthy: Bust.
2) Mike Neal: Bust as D-lineman. Mediocre as OLB.
3) BJ Raji: One could debate this #9 pick based on his performance since the SB year.
4) Jeremy Thompson: DE round 4 - remember that guy? Yeah, me either. Another bust.
5) Justin Harrell: No comment needed here. Bust.

Jolly was a great late round find. Daniels was also a nice pick-up in round 4 and deserves credit there.

Lets hope Datone picks it up next year. Or he'll be another addition to TT's D-line Bust List.

Just like cowpie, calling an injured player a bust. This season will tell if Worthy is a bust or not, not your analysis.

Not all "high" picks are sure things. look up the track record of the rest of the gm's in the league when it comes to their picks. You will find similar misses. and I'm not talking top-5 picks. similar draft positions.

my point is that alot of gms' high Dline draft picks are poor. of the last 7 drafts, there have been 83 Dline picks in the 1st two rounds. 50% of them have been below average or worse players to date and many are no longer in the league. of the remaining 50%, over half graded poorly (PFF) their first 2 seasons in the league. of the ones that were picked outside the top 16 draft slots, 85% graded poorly in their first couple seasons.

it is just a difficult position for any gm to hit on. and even the hits rarely do anything until about the 3rd season in the league

Too early to say on worthy or datone jones. But we will know after next year.

I've never been impressed with Raji. Disappointing.

If you think back to clay Matthews rookie season, he was just ok. He flashed now and then. It was year two that he turned in to a superstar. He single handedly destroyed kolb's career with eagles in the first game of 2010.

nopainnogain... I've made that same point on many occasions here. Don't waste your breathe. He doesn't know football well enough to understand or even care to understand. He's just here to TROLL! That's all he is... A F'in TROLL!

Ben, I have no interest in getting into the argument between you and Stroh, but I thought you should know that UCLA runs a base 3-4 D. They use four linemen in some of their sub packages.

Worthy has showed nothing when he's been out there.

But I'm happy to wait another year before calling him a bust. If it makes your little sensitive nanny ass happy, you can switch Jerel Worthy to "Undetermined".

How about the other four on the list? And how about we reflect on Datone's ten tackles and PFF grading as the 6th worst DE in a 3/4 system out of 62?

Love to hear another excuse or two. Thanks.

I'm not saying that all high picks are hits. Obviously that is true. What I am saying, is that TT's D-line draft choices and especially the high ones, have been bad to poor.

He has consistently hit at other positions. But for whatever reason, his player evals at that position have been slightly off the mark.

And once again, and to be fair, Datone is a rookie who can prove me wrong. I'd be very happy if he did. Same goes for Worthy. I just haven't seen much out of them to this point to make me think their going to be anything more than average D-lineman in this league.

DL is one of the hardest positions for rookies to come in and play well...

Many consider Geno Atkins as one of the best DL in the league. I attached a link to view his play over his first 4 years.

http://www.nfl.com/player/genoatkins/496762/profile

DL it takes time for these guys to learn how to play. Look at Daniels from last year to this year.

Especially give DL about 3 years to say whether they are a bust or not.

Worthy was robbed of his second year basically due to a torn ACL. Give him, this offseason to be with the team and after next year, if he doesn't produce, I think we can start considering him a bust.
But give these guys time.

Fischer looked overmatched a lot, though. Yeah, he started most games but he struggled.

Pro Football Focus graded Fischer out at a -17.8.

Even Dorsey said Fischer needs to put on 15-20 lbs to be more effective.

His pickup of Marcus Cooper after the Niners cut him looked pretty brilliant for most of the year...until the playoffs.
