Former Packers DE Aaron Kampman Released by Jaguars

Former Green Bay Packers defensive end Aaron Kampman was released by the Jaguars Thursday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced Thursday that former Packers defensive end Aaron Kampman has been released, ending an injury plagued stay in Northern Florida that lasted just two years and featured little production.

Kampman signed with Jacksonville as an unrestricted free agent in 2010. He would go on to play in just 11 games from 2010-11, as a number of injuries to his lower half limited Kampman to just four sacks.

The Jaguars gave Kampman $24 million over four years with over $10 million in guarantees in 2010.

Kampman tallied 54 sacks over eight years with the Packers, who drafted the defensive end in the fifth round of the 2002 draft. From 2006-09, Kampman registered 37 sacks and was widely considered one of the game's best all-around defensive linemen.

He made two Pro Bowls (2006, '07) and two second-team All-Pro teams ('06, '07) during his time with the Packers.

Injuries and a change of defensive front in Green Bay necessitated a new home for Kampman after the 2009 season. A torn ACL in Week 9 ended the experiment of Kampman playing as a stand-up linebacker in Dom Capers' new 3-4 defense. He signed with the Jaguars in March as one of the biggest additions of the 2010 offseason.

Injuries, however, followed Kampman to Jacksonville.

Just eight weeks into the 2010 season, Kampman blew out his other ACL and was lost for the season. Then, a year later, Kampman would see action in just three games before another operation was needed to clean out one of his bad knees.

An eventual release looked like a good bet for gimpy Kampman, who was due almost $5 million in base salary for the 2012 season.

Kampman will need to get healthy—he missed all of the Jaguars' minicamps this offseason while rehabbing his knee—before a team will take a chance at adding him this summer. Given how early it is into the offseason, Kampman should have a chance to latch on elsewhere for 2012.

I love Kampman. I truly hope he finds himself healthy enough to land with another team this season.
