Five Packers Veterans Who Will Fight to Make the Roster in 2020

These five Packers veterans will have a fight on their hands to make Green Bay's roster in 2020.

Football is a competitive game. Each year, a new crop of players come in to challenge the team’s returning players for jobs.

Here is a look at five Green Bay Packers veterans who will have a fight on their hands to make the roster in 2020.

Only veterans with at least one year of experience are eligible for this list. Positions where the Packers are expected to add a player or more in the draft are a part of the calculations when determining which players will be fighting for roster spots.

Players who have only been on the practice squad or are signed to future contracts are not eligible for this list. Feel free to comment on players you feel belong on this list but were left off.

5. RB Dexter Williams

There has been a lot of talk about the Packers possibly selecting a running back in the draft this year in part because both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams will be unrestricted free agents at the end of the 2020 season.

Dexter Williams showed he has the ability to run the football during the preseason, but his inability to pass protect, pick up blitzes and run the right pass patterns out of the backfield prevented him from getting on the field once the regular season got under way.

The former Notre Dame star played in only four games and carried the ball five times for 11 yards. Because of his struggles in pass protection, the coaching staff turned to Tra Carson and Tyler Ervin before putting Dexter Williams on the field.

Dexter Williams will have to show he has improved the other aspects of his game during training camp and in the preseason in order to earn a roster spot on the Packers in 2020.

4. WR Jake Kumerow

Kumerow is a feel-good story and a fan favorite. The undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin-Whitewater seemingly came from nowhere in 2018 and made the team after a strong training camp. In two seasons with the Packers, Kumerow has 20 total receptions for 322 yards and two touchdowns.

Kumerow has good size and has earned the trust of his quarterback because he runs good routes, but he struggles to separate from good NFL defenders. In his two seasons, Kumerow has yet to prove he is more than a WR 4 or WR 5 on the depth chart.

At 28, Kumerow is probably what he’s going to be as an NFL player. With Equanimeous St. Brown expected to be healthy, the additions of Canadian standout Reggie Begelton and Devin Funchess and the team expected to draft at least one wide receiver in the draft, there may not be room for Kumerow this season. The Packers may opt to keep a younger player with more potential over Kumerow or he may simply be beaten out for one of the depth receiver jobs.

3. WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling

Marquez Valdes-Scantling got off to a strong start last season catching 16 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown in the first four games of the season. Unfortunately, his production fell off dramatically and MVS caught just 10 passes in the final 12 games of 2019.

Valdes-Scantling has game-changing speed, but his inability to run precise routes and to consistently hold on to the ball made it more difficult for Aaron Rodgers to trust him.

The talent is clearly there, but if the Packers draft a pair of receivers, there will be a lot of competition for roster spots at this position. Unless MVS improves his route running, he may not be a Packer in 2020.

2. DL Montravius Adams

The Packers are still waiting for Montravius Adams to live up to his billing coming out of college. The former third-round pick out of Auburn played in only 18 percent of the Packers defensive snaps in 2019, down from 20 percent the previous season.

The coaching staff praised Adams during minicamp and training camp last summer, but once the games counted, he was riding the bench and was behind undrafted free agent Tyler Lancaster in the team’s defensive line rotation.

Adams made only 11 total tackles last season and did not record a sack, a quarterback hit or a tackle for loss. In three seasons with the Packers, he has a total of 1.5 sacks, with all coming in 2018.

If Kingsley Keke makes his expected second-year jump, Keke would likely be ahead of Adams in the defensive line rotation. The Packers are also expected to add at least one defensive lineman in the draft this year.

Adams is in the final year of his rookie contract. He needs to have his potential translate into production on the field if he hopes to stick with the Packers in 2020.

1. DB Josh Jackson

The Packers selected Josh Jackson in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The Iowa product had an up and down rookie season. He started 10 games, broke up 10 passes and made 49 total tackles including one tackle for loss. But his lack of speed and inability to change direction quickly hampered him in man coverage and made him susceptible to double moves.

In his second season, Jackson was barely on the field on defense. He played in just 10 percent of the Packers defensive snaps in 2019 after playing in 68 percent of the snaps the previous season. His total tackles dropped to just 11 and he failed to defend even a single pass.

The Packers play five or more defensive backs about 70 percent of the time under defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. But even when injuries hit the secondary, Jackson remained on the bench. Although he was a second-round pick, Jackson fell behind undrafted players like Chandon Sullivan and Raven Greene on the depth chart.

Jackson lacks the speed to play effective man coverage at corner and may not have the instincts, experience and skill set to switch to safety. Jackson has talent and ability, but he may be better suited to playing in another system.

Unless Jackson improves his play in 2020, he may not be back with the Packers for a third campaign.

Thanks Gilbert

Good list as all these guys are fairly cheap contracts.
I'd add Tyler Lancaster as I think we need a big upgrade from him. A try-hard guy sure, but he never got within 5 yards of Raheem Mostert.
I'd like to add Dean Lowry to the list, but they overpaid him so he's probably safe.... we need 2 big beefy stout guys added on the DL.

We do need an upgrade up front on the D-Line and I think we'll see an addition in the draft but not until the 4th round, third at the earliest in my opinion. Thanks for commenting.

Lowry's contract screams "cut me" after 2021. Maybe even after this year. I think he is safe for another 10 months.

Good list and good article Gil. I also think our WR group will be very fluid coming into next season. And just like our D-line group, I think the O-line personnel will see some turnover. Both those groups have a whack of nondescript players who could easily be replaced with the next guy who shows some potential. Unfortunately, both our lines suffer a lack of quality depth. If Kenny Clark goes down, an already weak run D-line gets a whole lot worse. The same is true for an O-line that will struggle to put 5 solid starters on the field if an injury hits.

Look for Cole Madison and Lane Taylor to fight for the final cut.

Yes, and Lane Taylor with is contract and being this his last year of a deal, he will have to show he is in fact a much better option than Madison. Any doubt or a tie goes to Madison. Taylor would be one of the most expensive backup guards in the league. (Assuming Turner starts).

Depth is definitely an issue on both lines although I think the o-line is in better shape depth wise with Lucas Patrick and potentially Taylor available and players like Jenkins and Turner who can move around and play different positions in a pinch. Thanks for commenting. Glad you enjoyed the article.

Agree with all of these. I would add EQ to the list. I really like Equinemious St. Brown, I always thought he had the highest upside of the 3 drafted receivers but last year hurt his development. He cannot have a SO-SO camp (if there is a camp). And I agree on Tyler Lancaster. His play dropped off IMO. My man Kingsley may pass him up on the depth chart in camp.

I think the injury gives EQ a little bit of an edge over MVS and Kumerow just because he showed enough promise as a rookie. I didn't want to put TOO many receivers on the list but I think your overall logic on him is correct. As for Kingsley Keke, I can't wait to see what he does in camp and in the preseason. True speed and a over a thousand regular season yards in two seasons is not nothing. It may not be great, but really good receivers have started worse. Adams had less in his first 2 years on more games started.

MVS will almost certainly get time because he has the athleticism you can’t teach.

Ok, here on Earth he’s shown durability by playing in all 32 games. He’s caught a couple of passes per game. His average reception was one of the league’s best. So, he’s shown stuff.

He had some drops, including the horrible one that would have been a long TD to start the game, but his production is comparable to Davante Adams during his first two seasons.

Tough to give up on a guy with the physical traits MVS has, add to that no other receivers have them on the Packers. He Just doesn't track the ball well from what I have heard. Your deep threats needs to track the ball very well. If the Packers draft a offensive weapon type WR the only reason to keep MVS (IMO) is how much he can contribute on special teams.
If the Packers are truly committed to improving special teams then either you have more starters on hem (risky) or you keep depth chart players who excel on special teams. Hopefully you don't play your 6th receiver,3rd TE, 7/8th DB etc..much on Offense or Defense and can keep them for special teams contribution, (there is a risk to that as well). Just stuff to consider.
Kummerow has a shot for just that reason.
Adams
Draft Pick
Funchess
Lizard
EQS

That is at least an average grouping of Receivers....could improve to top 1/3rd.

Great job Gil with solid reasoning for your choices. I would be really disappointed to lose Jackson given many thought he was good enough to be drafted in the first round. The guy does flash some talent. I am just wondering if we could line him up in a safety position or hybrid like Raven Greene was playing and allow him to find the field more. I do agree that he might find his way off the team, but find success in another team's system.

It’s a shame about Jackson. As noted, some saw him as a first round pick. I was one of those who thought he might be suited to play safety. But the team must not think so. I think, now, he plays some coverage on the slot. He doesn’t have the speed to start at CB and apparently doesn’t have the smarts to play safety. He had a lot of interceptions at Iowa and some thought he could continue that in the NFL. He could be trade bait.

I think it far more likely that talent at CB is harder fo find than talent at S, and that they would want to give him every opportunity to show he's not a CB before moving him and setting him back.

"He doesn’t have the speed to start at CB and apparently doesn’t have the smarts to play safety."

His speed is in question. Right now, the Packers have two pretty good safeties, so that makes it hard for him to break in there. He's a core special teamer and isn't particularly expensive. His draft analysis pointed out that he was still pretty green at CB and would be drafted on projection. This is year 3...I suspect he gets this year to show what he can do unless he's completely inept in camp.

Plus, don't forget that he missed most of Camp last year after a foot injury and unfortunately for him plenty of guys (Sullivan, Hollman) shined in his absence. The talent is there for Jackson. He's got great ball skills and drives on the ball pretty well, he just needs to get out of his own head and stay on the field.

They claim he is the slot guy but was behind Tramon in the depth chart? Sullivan took over the dime. Pettine said he was being trained solely for the slot CB, but a two pick couldn't get on the field? Maybe they play musical chairs and putn him at the dime in 2020.

Nice Column Gil, thanks.

I would add...

Bob Tonyan - show me something for crying out loud!
Tim Boyle - Grab the back-up role and OWN it!
Oren Burks - It Is Time!
Alex Light - Show or Go, we need to see development in our OL reserves
James Looney - position change? Be good or be gone.

and one call-out to a rookie from last year.
Darrius Shepherd - last year the lights were too bright, settle down and show us why you were kept coming out of TC. I believe in you as a slot for the future!

Good points. Tonyan is definitely going to have to prove he can be a true TE behind Sternberger, not just a catcher. He could be the most impacted by the arrival of Funchess.

Oren Burks. How could I have forgotten him? I think very much on the bubble. He ought to be. 2 years of nothing to show. I will say I think that he has never seen the field properly fit to do himself justice. That said, I could see the draft impacting him significantly ( indeed I’m really hoping it does). He could find he is replaced before he has the chance to establish himself.

I think that it will be harder than last year for Shepherd but, having seen him in camp, was like watching a different person in the regular season. I do think that you are right in your diagnosis. Just not the same instinctive athlete that really caught the eye.

I think that the team cut him some slack because of injuries and draft position. Besides, he is the type of player that Pettine likes and we did not have much else at MLB. Pettine’s emphasis on 5 (Or more) DBs also comes to mind. He is still affordable, so there is that too.

This dude looked like Mike McKensie walking into camp, ready to start, and then NOTHING BUT DECLINE? WT* is that, and WT* kind of coaching, or lack thereof has happened since?

I think Dexter Williams has the talent but needs to mature or he will be gone. I was reminded by another commenter the other day that we already have a RB in the roster who fits many of the characteristics of a dark horse diamond candidate: Damarea Crockett. Willams is definitely under threat.

Kumerow had a golden opportunity to force his way onto the field and show he belonged. He didn’t and might not even make camp.

MVS has looked good and produced and then didn’t. From the summary one might overlook that. He and the team are the only ones that know how his leg injury impacted. If we get a similar athlete, MVS is going to have to fight, but is perhaps less likely than others to depart at this point.

Last year the team stated that they wanted Jackson to focus and learn a specific role. Was that real? If it was, what that role is determines his competition. I have to think that they will give him a good chance to succeed. If it was lip service deflection, he may not survive to cut down.

Adams is, for me, the most disappointing. He was drafted for penetrative ability in a big man but has shown neither that nor ability against the run. I wonder if his time is up unless he sheds the scales from his eyes and has a blinder in camp (if there is one).

Of those others have mentioned, Lowry isn’t going anywhere because he is almost all dead money if he does. Moreover, he isn’t a run stuffer DT type and was, I suspect, used only because Adams was presumably worse.

Lancaster was a disappointment last year. He regressed. His role is to plug the middle. If he can’t do that it’s time to move on. If we expect him to flow to the ball, well we should look instead at those around him and the coach. I expect competition and he should need to fight hard to win it. I don’t know that his functional strength is ideal.

EQ was not over impressive in camp and then got injured. I don’t think he goes anywhere unless the group performance above him simply forces him out. Of all the WR carried over not named Adams, he is the most versatile. I think therefore he makes the roster unless 5 or 6 clearly outplay him.

I’d also add Alex Light. It’s hard to end a career on one horrid game, but he was made to look inadequate. If Taylor is kept, I think I would rather he started at Tackle than Light based upon that performance. In reality, Turner or Madison with Taylor sliding in to guard is more likely. However, I think Taylor is more than likely not goingto be around for cap reasons. I expect Leglue to give Light a very strong push. He is perhaps even more versatile and possessed of a higher upside.

Williams was a mistake. I don't know why Gutedkunst didn't pull the trigger on Alec Ingold. The guy shined for the Badgers and can catch the damn ball out of the backfield. He ws picked up as a FA by Mayock and Gruden started him, day one, following the blueprint of the WCO, designed by Bill Walsh. Gutey has to prove it this year with his picks .

I agree with your assessment CW. Gute's problem is the need to keep players who know the system and at the same time upgrade the roster as a whole while keeping under the Cap. (And now for my next trick I'll make the salary cap vanish...) Not easy. If the Cap wasn't so tight, keeping Taylor would be a no-brainer. But without Taylor, the Packers have no depth at all at OL. Packers were lucky that Jenkins was NFL ready. Issues like that are seeded throughout their roster. (RB is a perfect example. They only have two who are NFL players and no FB which is critical in MLF system.) Glad I'm not Gute...

I am guessing that they need to draft at least one guy that they think can plug and play in this year's draft. I would not be surprised with two OLs in the first four picks looking at the contracts expiring. I am not as convinced as others that Bakh will be retained after his contract is up.

It all depends on what Gute drafts.

Maybe, it depends how long this lasts and how bad it gets.
Stay well. Thanks, Since ‘61

Except for MVS we lose nothing if we chuck the other 4 players now.
I would give MVS another shot during TC. If he can’t cut it again let him go as well. These are pretty much JAGS and easily replaced. Everyone stay strong and stay well. Thanks, Since ‘61

I don't think we know the extent of MVS' injury. He looked just fine in the first month of the season. The very dramatic drop-off in his play and playing time may have been injury related.

Either way he is going to have to have a good training camp and preseason to make the team as the new additions (including at least one new drafted pick WR) will all be pushing for a roster spot.

Well, just for the Cap alone, there will be a fair amount of roster churn. Most of these guys would be on the bubble anyway for that fact alone. Couple of short points. Both Burks and Jackson were not ready to play till mid season. Core injuries do that to a body. Both players lost what amounts to two full seasons. Burks was a little farther ahead than Jackson, but not by much. Jackson moved to safety and the slot by the Raider game on the Packers west coast swing. That was his first real action in over a year and a half. Same with Burks. To say these guys had some bad breaks would be a gross understatement. How much they are valued is an unknown right now. But there must have been something the front office and Pettine saw in them, otherwise both would have been released already. Forgive me for sounding like a broken record here, but the Packers are a rebuilding team, and rebuilding teams as a rule take more risks. The question remains is how much risk does Gute assume with Rodgers window, and a path to the Superbowl still open. I don't know, but Gute has nine (or 10?) draft choices this year. So we will find out.

Why would we think of keeping mediocre players. Youve got the draft and free agency. I can see someone needing del in year one. After that, adios sucker if after two years you havent shown anything.
The best coaches do this.

Jackson is slow? No way, no one questioned that prior to he being drafted.....And then the "Packer experts" fell all over themselves when Ted Thompson pulled a "Martellus Bennett / Lance Kendricks" like coup and snagged him the second. The brass in the NFL is just not that smart and prone to believing in the "eye test" as opposed to hard data. Jackson's speed related numbers were too low for an NFL CB and believe it or not, that has proven to be true. Who knew..

I hate to see any Packer Lose their job but it goes without saying that if these five players are not on the active roster come game one, we probably upgraded the team.

All will be gone , waste of a second round pick, what’s puzzling is M Adams, I remember him at Auburn he was a beast, I believe he was never coached right or understood the defense. Shame
