Five Former Packer Players Claimed on Waivers by Other NFL Teams

Sunday was another busy day in the NFL. With the post cut down day waiver wire closing, five players cut by the Packers on Saturday have found new homes.

OLB Dezman Moses was claimed by the Chiefs,  C/G Patrick Lewis was claimed by the Browns, and ILB Terrell Manning was claimed by the Chargers.

Two of the more surprising cuts from Saturday, RB Alex Green and TE D.J. Williams have also found new homes. Green is headed to the New York Jets to join former Packers QB Graham Harrell, and D.J. Williams was claimed by the Jaguars.

Not surprised that those guys found teams. Those were the ones who were on the bubble. All the ones who thought that C. Johnson would be claimed by another team were wrong. He is on the PS again. He's not that good, and didn't play well at all. I am surprised they didn't take Walker on the PS instead.

PS again? He was just drafted in April.

He was hurt the entire preseason with the exception of 1 week. Just because he played in Division 2 doesn't mean the kid can't play ball. If he stays healthy, I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually on the 53 man roster. He's 6'2" 215 Lbs and ran a 4.38 and 4.39 40. Look at his college stats before you assume he's no good.

Selfishly, I always hate when this happens. I'm not sure what it means.

Pessimist: TT made a mistake releasing these guys.
Optimist: The Packers roster is pretty deep with talent if cut guys get picked up so quickly.

I definitely think the latter. I just had that we didn't get trade value for them.

Trades are few and far between since free agency began, without the ability to trade as he had in the past Ron Wolf decided to retire early - he felt he lost an excellent option to upgrade his teams. The last big trades people talk about are the Herschell Walker trade and the unforgetable John Hadl trade. The Packers best recent trade was a 6th round pick for Ryan Grant. Trading has gone the way of the black and white TV.

Big trades, I agree, are uncommon. Medium and little trades are still alive and well. I'm sure that TT wishes he could have received some trade value, even if it was "just" a conditional 7th round pick.

You couldn't see for yourself that these guys offered very little to this team?

Williams and Manning have been invisible in regular season and preseason since day 1, Green has done little to nothing as a runner and has shown awful instincts at reading the cutback (pretty good at screens though), Moses flashed but his body wore down last year and was worse so far this year, and Lewis is just a guy...would have made it by default.

We kept guys that are already better and have as much or more upside...

Barrington > Manning
Bostick > Williams
Mulumba/Palmer > Moses (in TC & preseason)
Van Roten > Lewis (Lewis may have more upside)

I think Van Roten is really bad, but so is Lewis, and at least Van Roten is more familiar with offense.

I don't think it was between Lewis and GVR, but between Lewis and Lane Taylor. Personally from what I have seen (which is only preseason games), I would have kept Lewis over Taylor.

I once heard a GM offer up as an example of a time period when his team wasn't very good the fact that nobody would claim the people they cut, for what it's worth.

LMAO, look at where those unfortunate souls ended up! If they didn't appreciate the GREEN BAY PACKERS organization while they were part of it, something tells me they will soon enough.

Best of luck to you... Lol... Jets... Jags...

I am pretty sure they all appreciated their stay with the Packers. I know D.J. and Alex both said nice things about the Packers unlike Jennings.

If I am Alex, D.J. and even Harrel I would be happy as hell to be let go by the Packers and picked up by bad teams.

These guys had zero chance of being a starter in GB with Finley and Lacy here. This is a clear case of one door shutting and another door opening. This is a great chance for these guys to actually get some major playing time and I wish all these guys well. I really do. I hate seeing these guys lose their jobs so it's nice to see them with another opportunity.

"These guys had zero chance of being a starter in GB with Finley and Lacy here."

Both of those guys were given ample amounts of snaps- over the course of years - to prove their worth and "earn" playing time... They both "failed" to do so. Fact. Extenuating circumstances (Green/injuries) or not. Coach gave them a length of rope, they hung themselves with it instead of pulling themselves out of a hole.

That being said, yeah... Best of luck to 'em.

Former packers add professionalism to any roster. Thank our lucky stars for the orginazation and how they go about things I'm surprised the jets haven't made Harrell head coach yet

Nice compliment. The Packer connections are what brought Harrell to the Jet's, Marty Mourningwig the offensive co-ordinator who honed his skills with Holmgren knew Harrell was well versed from his time in Green Bay in the West Coast Offense.

Ya five were picked up but I would not be surprised after a week of practice the staffs of those teams realize what our staff knows, these guys aren't very good, even as backups.

Only took the Jets two days to find out what Harrell was about and we spent three years trying to make him into something???????????????????????????

I was really surprised that they did not keep Walker,Tyrone or someone didn't pick him up. He did well in the pre games.

He did relatively well. Didn't end strong tho. And a small, slow WR doesn't impress too many teams.

I sure hope that GB's noted "brainwashing" of players includes a vow of "omerta"....lest our hopes be dashed amid all the enemy intel seeping out...
