Favre Embellished Injury

That's according to Rich Cimini with the Daily News here in New York.

Money quote:

He never wanted to be here in the first place; he made that quite clear, admitting he found out about the trade from watching ESPN. By then, he figured it would cause too much damage to turn back, so he re-located his family to New Jersey and tried to make it work.

It didn't. He never felt comfortable in New Jersey, many of his close friends told me late in the season. Then his legendary arm fizzled out and a couple of teammates took shots at him in the papers, criticizing the Great Favre. After the season, he leaked a story about a torn right bicep tendon, a great reason for retiring, he figured. Someone with intimate knowledge of the injury told me it wasn't as bad as he made it out to be. But, hey, it gave him a convenient "out."

Emphasis all mine.

As you have no doubt noticed, I've refrained from commenting on this latest go-around of As The Favre Turns, preferring to mostly just link to others' comments and reports. But believe me when I tell you, when Favre is officially a Minnesota Viking, I will have something to say.

I believe you have shown tremendous restraint on this topic. I have tried to do the same. Your caveat is similar to the one I shared with Keith the other day. If he signs with MN...well, let's just wait before I open my mouth. As you know, I hate this topic. HATE IT! It's just too divisive and it takes us away from great posts and great discussions about what should be an exciting 2009 in Packerland. I never in a million years thought he would actually sign with MN for the upcoming season. He hasn't yet so I continue to hope sanity will prevail.

Not to pat myself on the back, but I called that a while ago.
_______
I'd also like to remind everyone that Aaron Rodgers played the majority of the season with a sprained and seperated throwing shoulder. It was a real injury that actually showed up on the injury report. Not once did Rodgers use his injury as an excuse for a poor performance.

So who is the iron man?

Thanks for your restraint. As a mere poster/responder to your excellent blog, all I can say is that IMHO Favre is an egotistical, no account douchebag. Yes, I know, he gave us everything he had for 16 seasons. Great moments, great victories. But no amount of that can cover for vindictive, petty, vengeance driven actions.

Can we talk about the GBP offense, what the RB rotation will be, how the playbook might expand? Something hopeful?

Living in Minneapolis, Queens fans are absolutely peeing themselves in anticipation. In my mind, #4 (I can no longer utter his name) continues to erode his legacy for what? Revenge? If this should occur, heres hoping that the entire Packer roster exacts revenge on this ego-maniac when they take the field.

If this latest report is true (no given), it looks like Brett Favre is determined to leave fans every pissed off at him. I'm sure Jets' fans are thrilled to hear about this crap today.

Though I wonder this: if the injury is not nearly as bad as he led others to believe, what's the excuse for his pathetic showing (2 TDs, 9 picks, a passer rating in the 50s) the final five games of last season?

If anyone watched him throw in the last 6 games, it should be obvious there was a serious loss of arm strength. He could not throw with any accuracy or power. I tend to think that this latest revelation by the NY press is just another story sourced to one of McGinn's unidentified execs.

So what you're saying, Ron, is that there's a newspaper media cabal, conspiring against the Great One? Come on. Cimini isn't saying he WASN'T hurt - just that Favre's camp made it sound worse than it was. If I played as poorly as he did at the end of last season, I'd say it was horrible too.

As for his actual play, he looked similar to what he looked like at the end of his last three Packers' seasons - worn out.

Wow, are people ever piling on. Injured, not injured who cares how or why he played the way he did with the Jets. If it's even true.
Anyone think he embellished injuries while he was here? When he was with the Pack he played though injuries that sat down other QB's in the league.
So any free agent signings? Got some running back depth yet? D-Line? How's things going on the Jennings signing? Any thoughts on bringing an experience backup QB to compete with the 2 second year backups? Let's keep it rolling.

The article goes on to say that the Jets were hoping he would be back this year. If they though he quit on the team why would they do that? Also why would Mangini have invited him to work with the QB's in Cleveland if he thought Favre quit on the team? This guys unnamed source doesn't add up.

It's as easy as this: if Favre gets surgery on his arm it was as bad as he said it was. If he doesn't get surgery on the arm that he said needed surgery to repair, it was not as bad as he said it was. Let's see what he does. Anyone want to take my bet that all of a sudden his arm is "feeling better" and he won't need surgery after all? Anyone?

No Aaron, I'm saying the Sports Media is willing to embellish the facts to meet a deadline. Anytime! (see B. McGinn's imaginary friends) His injury last year was real and more serious than reported at the time.

You are right that the late season performance has been noticeable for some years. And that's why TT was willing to let him go.

I believe he quit on the Jets last year so TT would not get extra draft picks and so he could easily leave the Jets for the Vikings...he hates TT that much. That said I really like what the Packers have been doing for the past 6 months, the new coaches and players. Let' hope TT doesn't whiff on Jennings.

How many injury reports did Favre's phantom injury appear on? Anyone?
____
Zero.
____
It's not like Favre hasn't made a career our of publicizing his injuries to the world to demonstarte that how tough he is. Every ankle sprain and abdominal tweak has always been on the injury report (as is required by league rules).
____
But all of a sudden he has an injury that is so serious that he needs surgery and he is hush-hush about it until after the season ends?

This is just a guess as to why the Jets would want Favre back for another year. The Jets probably didn't want any possible bad publicity of people trying to suggest they pushed Favre out. of course this was before it came out that Favre was still determined to play for the vikings this year.

The Jets probably wanted Favre one more year to have more time to find a successor. The Jets had to trade up in the draft to get Sanchez. What if Sanchez ends up a bust?

I'm saying he was never quiet about his injuries so why would he be so quiet about them last year?
____
Could it have been a convenient excuse for his awful performance?
____
Favre said that he needed surgery to play again and he elected to retire, rather than have surgery. **FAVRE** not me said that he needed surgery for his injury to heal.

Woody: I'm not trying to create excuses for anyones play last year. I only saw 2 jets games last year and they were both early in the season so I am in no position to tell anyone what Favre's play was like or why it was like that.
It just seems to me that I don't see the need for the Packer fans to pile on this guy. I think our QB play was at or near the top in all but a couple of his years.
He is no longer with the team and hasn't been in a Packer Uniform in over a year. Let him chase his 1 last chance if he wants who cares. WE HAVE THE BETTER QB AT THIS POINT. and whether he was a good or bad team mate on a team I care nothing about seems irrelavent to me.
________
So any free agent signings on the horizen? Foote went to the lions. I realize that it is nice not to have to overpay for some of these free agents, but at what point does it stop being overpaying and become an increase in the market price overall.
Are we becoming so fiscally responsible that the team signs no one?

Keith - you can certainly have until the end of the season on Kampman. That was kind of my point - by not overspending now, Thompson has the luxury of taking the season to find out who works and who doesn't of the 10+ free agents coming up in 2010.

From Greg A. Bedard:

http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/44423352.html

"Sources said Favre had a significant tear in the tendon, if not a complete tear. He declined to have postseason surgery, which Jets doctors recommended if he wanted to play again.

The tear has not improved much in the past three months, sources said. It's a painful injury but a player can play with it. Or Favre could still opt to have arthroscopic surgery, which could have him healthy by the time training camp opens in late July."

If Favre signs with Minnesota then I will be convinced that this was pre-planned last year when he signed with the Jets, to play one year, retire again and he could play anywhere he wanted..... if it was just about playing he could have returned to the Jets.

I guess Reggie White, Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren, Leroy Butler, etc. were just riding Brett Favre's coattails during the 90's. Favre was a very important cog in the resurgence of the Packers in the 90's but to say he made the Packers the PACKERS again is revisionist history

I want to applaud Aaron, for his obvious restraint. From the photo, Aaron looks to be quite a bit younger than I. Not that it matters all that much. However, Iearned about Packer football watching the ICE BOWL on TV (I was 13). So, my fandom stretches a bit and has basis in how the players on that Team behaved. It's no secret that I sided with Mgmt on the whole situation. It is what it is. I make no bones about it, nor any excuses.

Aaron - there ARE times when all of us, me especially I suppose, should use the same restraint. Yet, I would offer "that's how disappointed I was" over the whole situation. And, there still is FREE speech in this Country (for now).

DDD - I would offer that only up until recently, since 2002 or 2003, take your pick, Favre was still the IRON MAN. Rmember that hit he took from Lavar Arrington? It was a good thing we had a BYE that next week, otherwise I don't think Favre would have smoked da bears like he did after the BYE. And, what about that time he grabbed Hovan's facemask at Lambeau? No, only up until these last few years has there been a lessening of his capabilities.
Many offer that he should have retired at the end of 2003. In a lot of ways I agreed. Then again we would have never seen him do what he did in 2007, either. And, that last game, in the snow, at Lambeau "against Mike Holmgren" is a true classic in the Frozen Tundra tradition. No one can argue that point. I'm surprised it isn't out on DVD as a single - maybe it is......
Rodgers reminds me of several QB's the Pack have enjoyed over the generations - Favre, Dickey, Starr and even a little bit of the Majik, as well. I think it comes from the fact that Rodgers actually does watch film, as opposed to what the Gunslinger admits to on his DVD's.
--------------------
And, maybe that will make the difference. We're all about to find out.

@lifelongPacker:
Many of us don't see it the way you do. And, much like Verno's comments, I would ask one more question.....
How many SuperBowls did Favre win "without" Reggie White?
----------------------
You give Favre a lot of credit. Will it now be the team's fault we haven't won without Reggie? You can't have it both ways.
----------------------
There is a line where certain types of behavior do not garner respect from the fans and Brett Favre (for many of us) has stepped over that line. It gave evidence that much of what he ever said were all just words. And, he compounded the situation with him extending his "tantrum" so to speak. The text messaging to the Press when decorum states a private meeting.. is a private meeting - it should be given respect, not spit in your eye.
------------------------
And, for five years, Brett was considered in his prime and threw INT after INT to kill at least 3 chances at the SuperBowl game. Yet, most of us stood by him, then, well.... we all know the rest.
----------------------
I say Brett should sit it out for awhile. He can wait to come back to Lambeau until he's inducted into Canton. Then show up at Lambeau for the Home Opener... He should not show up right away, as many are still stuck in a different frame of thought about it all. ---- I would offer that he should bring Gilbert Brown with him, when he does come back. It has a righteousness to it.
