On both touchdown scoring drives for the Falcons, Tony Gonzalez had 51 yards and that TD.
This has been the Falcons MO for the past few games. Almost everyone of their touchdown scoring drives have included Gonzalez at some point.

Well yeah of course he is usually involved at some point on their extended drives, but just because he is active doesn't mean he is always "dominating" Jermichael Finley-style. But to say that the crux of shutting down this offense rests in restraining Gonzalez, we lose sight of the bigger picture. And the only way that can happen is if we have guys step up and cover their other big name players as well. Put Sir Charles on Roddy White. Get Desmond "the destroyer" Bishop in Michael Turner grill. And for Vince Lombardi's sake put some pressure on Matty Ryan and create some fear.

Really no bad this week, great game. Atlanta is a complete team, Pack would be a complete team if it could run the ball.

Grant's injury maybe too big to over come. I don't think Lynch would have added anything.

MM needs to get a serviceable running game installed before the playoffs, if we make it there. Looks like we are in the wild card race if the Bears continue to play as well as they are, they are for real and are getting better every week.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. One of the main reasons Bears have done well is lack of injuries. Even w/ that we could be tied w/ the Bears in two weeks:
Bears @ Detroit, vs Patriots...1-1
Packers vs 49ers, @ Detroit...2-0
This sets up a great finish:
Bears @ MN, vs Jets, @ GB
Packers @ NE, vs Giants, vs Bears

I must have watched a different game...I saw poor run blocking, shoddy special teams, awful tackling and some poor play calling. Packers beat themselves - again.

Let's hope they get back on track for the final 5 games and play up to their potential.

I'm curious, what specifically is getting MM in the Ugly category? Is it the non-challenge? We had three very long drives, including a 90-yarder at the end to tie it, so play calling couldn't be that terrible. Some of the goal-line play calls were a bit curious, including the QB sneaks, but is that enough to get you in the Ugly category?

He took his team down to the wire on the road against one of the best teams in the NFL and lost mainly due to a few plays that were out of his control. I'm not saying he had a great day, but I'm not sure it merits Ugly. Maybe I'm just misremembering though...

Here's some more Food for thought for the ugly MM:

Not using his timeouts at the end of the first half!!! ATL had goal to go with approximately 1:20 left. Burn those TOs, and get the offense back on the field to do work!

Was MM at the Vikes game last week where Rodgers drove us to a TD in the end-of-half two-minute?? Why couldn't we have gotten at least a FG there? Certainly, the odds were good enough to merit grabbing your balls and trying!

That is just flat-out, passive coaching. Ugly.

"I’m curious, what specifically is getting MM in the Ugly category?

He took his team down to the wire on the road against one of the best teams in the NFL and lost…"

The fact that his teams are down to the wire in these games and keep losing is what makes him ugly. He needs to get the team to where they win these close games. His teams simply cannot get beyond that point. So, in summary, mediocre is the new ugly.

I don't get the "toss" play, and then running into the heart of the defense -- seems like you'd want to avoid them, and take chances 1-on-1, and hope to break a tackle.

Seems like McCarthy can't call run plays that our oLine has a chance in hell of carrying out.

If McCarthy coached basketball, he'd dream up a 360 degree spin, pass-between-the-legs, windmill, reverse dunk -- while the player would be tugging his sleeve, telling him: "Coach, I'm five feet tall..."

They've had 4 years, and basically proven incapable of fixing it. Watch most teams play and they are able get 100 yards consistently. Just a normal day. 100 yards is reason to sing from the rooftops with this team. Disgusting. There is such a lack of power on our line. Pass blocking, fine. Run blocking, they're pushed around and bullied every week. Three fullbacks and we have to run QB sneaks for two yards.

Add Quinn Johnson to the bad in my book. He could have been better in short yardage, he blocked a td pass meant for Quarless, and let Rodgers fumble slip through his hands. The last one may be a bit harsh, but it seemed like he pushed it into the end-zone.

Quarless may have had his most consistent game as a pro. It may have been his best game to date if Quinn Johnson doesn't block that pass.

Ok, I was at the game, just finally got home, and this is what I took from it:

1. The Falcons, although I'm sure they are now considered the "best" team in the NFL, are not as good as the Packers. Their defense is horrible and their secondary is weak. Their offense is predictable, and only the refs and a couple of boneheaded plays(like not covering TONY EFFING GONZALEZ in the end zone) gave them the opportunity to score. There is no doubt in my mind that the Packers beat the Falcons 99 times out of 100. The talent disparity was quite obvious.

2. Aaron Rodgers is incredible, and you can't play man defense against him without a spy anymore, unless you want to give up an automatic 7-15 yards. He is also unaffected by pressure. That pass at the end of the final drive was immaculate. Watching him control an offense is like watching a composer write a song. His brain never stops working, and he finds ways to orchestrate big plays.

3. The Packers are going to the playoffs, and when they do, they will destroy the Falcons if they play again. I don't think the Falcons will win their division despite a cream-puff schedule and a 1 game lead. I think they finish 12-4, but end up a game behind or lose a tiebreaker with the Saints. As long as the Packers take care of business, they will win the North and likely host the rematch game.

4. I have no idea why no one has beaten the Falcons at home yet. It's a complete fluke. Their crowd is actually pretty stupid. They stood and cheered while their offense was in the red zone! The only advantage they WOULD have would be running on the fast track, except that they don't have a lot of team speed! It makes no sense, and the place doesn't scare me at all. Like I said, 99 times out of 100, the Packers win that game today.

totally agree with this. Atlanta doesnt scare me in the least little bit.

Green Bay had several miscues and I'm not saying we are much scarier... but this game was one of those Murphy's law games. The incomplete pass to Gonzo that went uncalled and unchallenged, the face mask, the fumble. Seemed like everything that could go against Green Bay did. I complained a lot about the refs on Twitter as usual, but it went both ways Sunday in the end.

Tough loss, shit didnt go our way, but in no way did they prove to be the better team.

The injuries that looked like they may be an excuse early on have now turned into an awesome exciting caveat to each game. Like "we just lost on a last second field goal to the best team in the NFC without 6 starters!!" just goes to show how good we actually are. We will be aight. absolutely have to have the next 2 wins.

I also think GB is better and would be well set-up in a re-match, but give the Falcons some credit! They are a good team!

Michael Turner's running style is absolutely formidable - he is a bulldozer with a superb sense of timing. Ryan is playing very well. And their defense, while not dominating, played very strong up front.

We may beat them next time, but that team is no joke.

NoWayJose,

I didn't say they were a joke. But they aren't as good as the Packers. They have no dynamic players. Roddy White is a glorified possession receiver, and Gonzalez is a hall of fame guy who knows how to get open. They lack anyone who really changes the game, though. Burner Turner is nice, but come playoff time, he's not going to get guys waving arms at him like the Packers did yesterday. They have very little chance of winning in the playoffs, and if they somehow slip into the #1 seed, no one will fear going there. As I mentioned, the building is really not THAT great of a home venue, and their home winning streak is more fluky than anything.

Didn't mean to imply that you said they were a joke and I agree with most of what you're saying. Like you said, I don't think their dome is nearly as strong as is being made out by some. And I would love the Pack's chances there in the playoffs, if given a second shot.

I do think they are a good NFL team though, and the Pack could very easily lose to them again even if we are more talented.

Their glaring weakness is pass defense, which we should have exploited and did exploit to some extent. On the other hand, they balance that out with that ball-control, clock-killing offense. They don't give the opposing offense a lot of possessions and it follows that blowing one or two drives can be fatal, as it was for us here. They are is a well-coached team that maximiizes its strengths.

Once again Teddy Thompson shows us what a moron for a GM is. Early in the season when Ryan Grant goes down, he sits pat with Brandon Jackson, and picks up a worthless Dimitri Nance. A running game could have easily won the game yesterday. Everybody describes our Pack as one-dimensional. So, a two-dimensional team meets a one dimensional and don't be surprised we lose such close games. Thanks Teddy, you are so "smart".

i think TT probably thought BJax would do better than he has been. So did I. So did Nagler. So did McCarthy. So did a lot of people. Was it worth dropping a 3rd rounder for Lynch--a guy with 1 good year and a whole lot of baggage? And ryan grant returns next year, so at best Lynch is a win-now solution--and maybe not even that. trading for lynch wasn't the sure thing people make it seem. What has he done in Seattle? He can't even take over the role from a pint-sized Justin Forsett.

besides, we have James "Adrian Peterson" Starks ;)

This game was extremely disheartening.
We can not run the ball. It is pathetic.

Rodgers was awesome but his fumble was THE GAME. from that point on the Packers were the ones chasing. There was never a time when the falcons HAD to score to keep pace. They got to play from ahead - which allowed them to stay composed and balanced.

McCarthy was horrible.

-shoulda challenged the spot after Rodgers' slide.
-shoulda challenged the gonzo catch on 4th down (no risk - had all his TO's)
-2 qb sneaks at the goal line (wow)
-completely abandoned the run game. Yes, I understand it wasn't going anywhere but you still have to make an attempt. Even though that flee flicker "worked", I had a feeling the game was over when they ran it. They had tried to run the play before and got stuffed. I feel they should have slammed it in there again. The flicker call was MM declaring "UNCLE"... pussy.

He can't win close games.
their last 6 losses...
last year - pitt by 1, arz in OT
this year - bears by 3, 'skins in OT, 'phins in OT, atl by 3

Only wins by less than a TD during that span...
holding off the lions this season, holding off the 'queens this season (if percy wears a size 11 instead of a 12 this is a loss). Both at home.

If it's tight... it's a loss.

Hard to find any positives after this one. Now we're just one of the "hopefuls" scrumbling for a wild card spot.

I think they'll make the playoffs. But, as I've said before, I don't give 2 shits about the playoffs. This doesn't look like a title contender.

Help me out here... I feel like I have to start looking at the draft. Do any of you see things I don't? Please tell me I'm over reacting.

I think you need to relax RickyBobby (although you may believe if you're not first, you're last). The Packers still have a pretty good defense and Rodgers has shown he can keep us in any game, even with a lackluster running game.

If the Falcons are the "best team in the NFC," then what does that make us? We hung in there until the very end with a bunch of questionable calls that couldn't went either way. Mike Smith went for it on numerous 4th downs. That just shows that even ge KNOWS the Pack is a darn good team.

We will need some luck the rest of the way, but the main thing is winning. Beat the 49ers, beat the Lions, and then let's see where were at. 5 games left dude, the skys not falling yet.

although we now have to hope the vikings or lions upset the bears and that the pats and the jets beat the bears the lions can play the bears and the vikings are getting better we could easily find ourselves back at first in the division we have a pretty easy schedule left as far as the rest of the schedule goes.. we have the pats and we have the bears.. those are the only tough games.. so we can still win the division easily

With the level of talent on the O why is this team only socring two touchdowns on some of these games? No reason anyone should be stopping this offense even if it's one dimensional. There's more than enought passing talent to offset and even set up a running game, which features three FBs, by the way. Low scoring going into the fourth quarter stresses a weakend D.
GB is now in the position of having to wait for other teams to fold (assuming they can win the next five) with only five games left. That is a losing posture. Better forget about any super bowl dreams. This team is not ready.

Saints fan here, trust me Pack fans the Falcons have benefited from bounces, calls, health, pretty much everything going their way this season and despite that still their BIGGEST win is 6 points over the Bucs. They have actually been outscored against the playoff teams they have played. When i try to point out the FACTS to them though they go crazy. They are a good team thats for sure but they arent 9-2 good. They could just as easily be 6-5 or worse. The Saints have been through the type of injury rash you guys have and the Falcons had last year with the same exact team and didnt make the playoffs and cried about injuries all season but now my Saints (and your guys Packers) have done what they couldnt and survived the injuries and are still only a game behind them despite them being fully healthy all year. Everyone is acting like they won the SB when their season isnt that impressive at all, and nothing compared to my Saints (hell even this year with the injuries my Saints have beaten 2 of the 3 playoff teams we have faced by double digits, the Falcons havent beaten one by more then 6 points WITH full health).

Thanx Jesse, for the perspective. Nice to see another team's fan as a "stroller" and not a "troller."

Jesse, you remind me why my 2nd favorite team is "Who Dat." Thanks for the insight.
