Did Ted Thompson Just Make a Trade?

According to several sources, Ted Thompson called up his former employee John Dorsey and swung a rare in-season trade for Kansas City Chiefs running back Knile Davis.

Unconvinced before Sunday's game that the Packers needed some help at running back, watching Eddie Lacy hobbling around while gutting out an appearance during Sunday's loss to the Cowboys evidently did the trick.

Seems Davis has wanted to be traded for awhile and his wish was finally granted:

No word yet on what the Packers gave up. Here are some stats on Davis:

Double post...

So I will add another thought..

While I think Davis could help out, how does he help this week? Packers play in 2 days. He has no knowledge of the Packers offense. He maybe will turn out to be better then Jackson, but would Jackson not be the better person to bring up this week? He at least knows the offense.

That is exactly what I was wondering. If they would still bring Jackson up.

If they did that, they would have to make 2 corresponding moves.

Would they put Starks and or someone else on IR to come back?

Why not just cut Starks. He has 34 yards rushing this year. Now missing 5 games or more, hell the season is almost done then, just dump him now. Time for him to move on.

Not sure that this week is even relevant. With no knowledge of the severity of Lacy's injury and with no understanding of Jackson's readiness to contribute, I would tend to think that this is a depth move that will pay dividends in December. Having said that, I can only assume that TT didn't give up too much for this added depth. And assuming that Jackson plays this Thursday, what happens if he falls flat? Now you're another week behind the curve.

I agree in that he should be able to contribute situationally this week. He won't know his blockers, but my guess is that he'll be itching to show what he can do. Likely won't be a contributor in the passing game this week as a receiver except maybe on simple dumpoffs.

The reason is twofold. Clearly the Packers expect their one-two punch to be healthy as the season wears on. So why pay for an expensive "starter" when neither of our starters are going on IR. This is a cheap stop gap solution. Jackson will be brought up from PS as well. When Lacy and or Starks return, Jackson will be sent back down. Also..... When Spiller or Forsette were available, they didn't feel Lacy was injured enough.

Mr. Bundy,

He's lighter than last year, that's pretty obvious. I think most would prefer he lost another 10 pounds at least but he's been effective when in. Lacy's only had 71 attempts, that's 14.2 a game and he's averaging 5.1 a carry. Someone fell on Lacys ankle and it got tweaked, his weight had nothing to do with the guy landing on his ankle. If it did then please tell me how. I get a kick out of justification.

Peterson carried the ball 31 times for 50 yards averaging 1.6. It's probably a good thing he was injured because he sucked for the 7 quarters he played...ALL OF THEM!!!!!

Lacy Lamar Jacksoned (hurdled, since you most likely don't know anything about college football) three, three (!) defenders versus Dallas. Yeah, that weight is really holding him down.

He should have gone out and made a move for a cornerback and that includes CUTTING Gunter yesterday. They didn't lose that game on Sunday because of a lack of rushing, it was ALL on the defense and number 12. This new guy and his 3.2 YPC average is just insurance for a few games until Lacy gets healthy by end of November. Totally misguided. I'm really starting to wonder if the two guys running this show are just a tag team of incompetence. (MM & TT)

"This new guy and his 3.2 YPC average is just insurance for a few games until Lacy gets healthy by end of November. "

Disagree in that, even when Lacy is healthy, Starks gets his share of the offensive snaps (averages about 20 per game when Lacy was healthy in weeks 1-3). Lacy outsnaps him 2-1 or 3-2. That's a significant number of snaps for your #2 back...and if Starks is done for the year, you need someone who can handle that. Lacy is not going to suddenly play 75% of the offensive snaps.

Duke - that's because although RB was an immediate need, the bigger problem is the cornerbacks, UNLESS they think Shields and Randall are coming back in two weeks. (I doubt this) They couldn't cover jack in that Dallas game and Gunter was god awful, to the point where ANY CB would have been better than 36. Davis is injury prone and doesn't have a proven record of success as a RB. (3.3 YPC - awesome...the league is full of these guys)

'that's because although RB was an immediate need, the bigger problem is the cornerbacks,'

Packers are down to 1 RB who is at 75% at most. That's not a bigger need?

Lets not forget that 2 weeks ago Gunter was one of the CB's that virtually shut out the Giants WR's.

Gunter did not shut down the Giants receivers on his own - they had chances, Manning was just awful in that game and missed some open receivers. Did you see the play with the RB running wide open in the middle of the field for a sure TD, but Manning overthrew him by 2-3 yards? There were others as well. To say that "Gunter shutdown the Giants receivers" is laughable. The difference is clearly he was falling and stumbling around against the Cowboys and it was more obvious. That was the worst display of cornerback play I've ever seen out of a Packer player. It was embarrassing. Hawkins must be really, really bad that they didn't try him instead.

I didn't say he shut them down himself. I said he was one of the CB's that did. Yes, Manning was bad, but to not give credit to Gunter for being one of the CB's that helped shut down the passing game completely isn't fair. Gunter was really good in that game.

Yes the Cowboys game was bad. No question. But don't write the guy off, because he had a bad game.

Conditional pick is all that I know of...

My guess is depending on how much he plays and stuff it could be as high as a 6th, but likely a 7th.

Lets not forget we should be getting a conditional pick from the Bills for McCray. We shouldn't really be out anything.

I think Knile Davis is a good trade: a 3rd round draft pick in 2013 who runs 40 yards in 4.37, in return for a conditional late round draft pick. In January 2016 he returned a kickoff for 106 yards and a touchdown.

This was a good move by TT.

It's being reported that we're trading a late round draft pick for RB K.Davis and I bet it's probably the pick we obtained from Buffalo in the trading of OLB L.McCoy, so essentially we signed McCoy this off-season in order to obtain RB K.Davis.

K.Davis is a much better depth RB than Forsett, Spiller, Starks, or D.Jackson. He's only 25 years old, he contributes on special teams, he's got plenty of speed, and he catches well out of the backfield. My guess is that the Packers place J.Starks on IR (or at least that's what they ought to do) to create an opening for him on the roster. For this week they can coach him on running several simple run plays and continue growing T.Montgomery's role in the backfield while resting E.Lacy or using him on very select short yardage plays. Going forward the Packers can start integrating K.Davis as a true change of pace back to E.Lacy.

I didn't realize Davis is only 25 yrs old. He was used sparingly in KC, so he probably still has fresh legs. I hope the change of scenery moves him to play inspired ball. The complacency a lot of Packers offensive players have shown lately has grown as tired and stale as the scheme.

Kniles Davis isn't a very good RB when tasked with smashed mouth football runs between the tackles (his statistical metrics indicate he's a well below average back in those circumstances) which is okay because E.Lacy (when healthy) is a significantly better than average back at handling those types of runs, but K.Davis does have the speed and catching ability to be a threat out of the backfield or to get around the corner on stretch runs; however, as you do note he does have ball security issues, so that's something to keep an eye on. Also, Davis should be a contributor on special teams which is another reason why he'll be a better contributor to this roster than J.Starks. J.Starks' statistical metrics have been god awful this year (worst RB in the league), but career wise Starks has been a much more productive back than K.Davis so I'm not sure what the Packers will do with him; personally, I think they should IR him and move on without him this year by leaning on Lacy more (when healthy) with a little bit of Davis and Montgomery sprinkled in.

No one seems to mentioning our solid offensive line. Starters....for a full five games in a row. Wow!!! That's the best continuity we've had in forever. Bulaga should be ready to go. Lacy is averaging over 5 yards per carry. He even averaged that on a bum ankle. So.....experience or not......Jackson or Davis should be able to get some yards behind this line. Davis may have never seen holes this big. Maybe this will be a boost this team needs.

Shields to IR..

So the question is, have we seen the last of Shields?

He said he hopes to be back in 8 weeks. Which if he was would put him back right before the playoffs, and could become a big time addition for our defense.

On a side note. Shields' injury is yet another reason why the NFL has to adjust its IR rules. It is handcuffing teams because they have only 1 spot on IR that they can bring someone back. Shields for example would have been nice to put on a temporary DL list, until they knew how long he was going to be out for. They could have used that roster spot the last 4 weeks. Its time the NFL adjusts its rules.

"So the question is, have we seen the last of Shields? "

I don't believe so, but in terms of the (overall) player he once was -- maybe. I'm confident the corner skills will be there, but the overall player (tackling players other than WRs) might cause hesitation or he might straight up avoid bigger players.

It's like with Lacy, he hasn't been running the same since his concussion(s). The last time I can remember Lacy taking on a defender and not trying to finesse him was against the Vikings a few seasons back (where the defender rode Lacy into the End Zone).

For Shields's sake (and not for the good of of the Packers), I hope he's done. I wish him well and a long life of rare headaches and remembering birthdays.

I don't know about Lacy. I think he's still the power back he was before. The issue is that anyone he meets in the open field that you'd like to see him just bury takes a shot at his ankles rather than taking him on. He's carrying defenders all the time...

I'm not saying he's no longer a Power Back. I don't think there are many RBs in the league that get as many yards as Lacy after initial contact (especially at the LOS). But he's definitely more finesse now compared to his first 2 seasons.

So for anyone thinking they made the correct move at RB vs. CB today, Shields went on the 8 week IR designated to return, but God only knows if he ever will. That means we get a few more games of Gunter, Goodsen and whomever else ISN'T injured and that means TORCHED by just about anyone. They should have gone and got ANY CB they could find that was breathing and had experience, because this is going to get ugly now. Randall and Rollins are both in the rehab program so likely won't play Thursday. As bad as we are on the back end, don't think we can't lose to the Bears because we CAN. This stinks. You could have got by with Jackson and Monty for a week or two, but how in Gods name they plan to survive with that secondary......everyone say a prayer or buy a case of Old Mill...you're gonna need it.

Not retroactive, which again points out bad management because they could have done this after week one and had him by week 10, so add 3 weeks, but as was said previously, this may just be buying them time to be sure he isn't completely finished and heading to retirement. They have a big signing bonus tied up in that guy which I questioned at the time because he's had a history of various injuries. He's a little guy. The gamble looks to be another bad bet.

There is no such thing as an 8 week designated to return list.

Theres not much I can add to all of the comments about our present situation. this is a passing league...without a great qb or good corners...well...we see the current fix we find ourselves in. ...season is still young and we always..last year being the exception...pick it up in Nov/Dec.. If we lose to the Bears Thursday...you can pretty much put a lid on this years playoff chances......just hoping Rogers starts playing like the elite qb he is supposed to be. but IMO his mechanics are shot...his tendencies to rely on playground chaos plays....are dooming us...plus he looks to be playing scared....sigh

Just watched the highlights of this guy, and I'm somewhat impressed. Having a RB with breakaway speed could really do good things for us. Team know that no matter how hard he runs, Lacy will never outrun a safety. This guy can. He's got decent footwork as well. After having a day to cool off after the Dallas loss, I'm more optimistic about the season, and can't wait for Thursday. Here's the link to Knile's highlights if anyone's interested.

Glad he traded for Davis. We need him. We also need another back because Lacy should only be used on 3rd and short until he heals. Bet that won't happen though. At least one aspect has been addressed. Unfortunately without Arod and a decent secondary, it's gonna be a long season.
