Deadline Passes Without News of Tagging Sam Shields

The deadline for NFL teams to tag franchise or transition players has passed with no news from the Packers organization. While there's a chance the Packers could have tagged a player but not officially announced it yet, it looks like the Packers will not be tagging anyone.

The Packers and Shields had been working on a contract prior to the deadline, but after talks broke down, it was believed that Shields would test the free agency market. The Packers have exclusive negotiating rights with Shields until March 8. The NFL league year officially begins on March 11.

Not tagging was the correct decision.

I'd hate to lose Shields but $10+ for a year (thinking transition tag) is a bit steep. That said, I would be inclined to make an offer to him similar to the Grimes deal.
And I know Rosenhaus is out to get his players top dollar, but I hate him with a passion like no other! But this reminds me of Mike McKenzie situation. Same agent. Both players were fast with some sloppy technique. McKenzie didn't last too long after cashing in. Is Shields going to have a similar fate?

Shields has a packers "G" the size of a cantaloupe tattooed on his neck. He's not going anywhere.

I understand that it's the off-season.
I agree that NOT putting any sort of tag on Shields was a good move.

But it sure has been a while since we heard/read any positive news about this team.

Lots of holes to plug.

Use those picks and that cash wisely!

Damn Dolphins just poisoned the well with the Brent Grimes deal. Now every FA CB will use that deal as a baseline.

If im TT I wait until I can talk to Alteraun Verner before agreeing to any deal with Shields. Verner will command more than Shields but how much more is the question. Id take Verner over Shields if their contract demands are similar.
