Davon House Will Be a Free-Agent Bargain for Packers

Davon House will not only play well in 2017, he will prove to be a bargain.

Davon House will prove to be a bargain for the Packers

When we look back at the offseason in 2017, one of the best moves the Green Bay Packers will have made was signing cornerback Davon House.

House, who was a fourth-round draft choice of the Packers back in the 2011 NFL draft. Despite getting injured that first season, he showed promise even then. Yet, due to injuries he played just two games.

But over his next three seasons in Green Bay, House got better and better. The 6-0, 188-pound corner, ended his career with the Packers totalling 27 passes defensed and two interceptions. In 2014, his final season, his outside coverage skills got to the point that was a starter-level player after earning 14 from 2012 to 2014.

After 2014, House left to take a big-money deal from the Jaguars and started 16 games in 2015. He intercepted four passes and had 21 passes defensed. He struggled in 2016 and was benched, before being released.

It’s hard to say what caused House’s fall from grace in Jacksonville, but four interceptions and 23 passes defensed is something and that was just two years ago.

House isn’t going to satisfy every need the Packers have at corner. But he will help. He's still just 27 years old and will be 28 opening day. He ran a 4.5 at the NFL combine, so he doesn’t have the blazing speed the Packers need -- but he’s big, physical and can play man-to-man coverage.

House is also familiar with Dom Caper’s defense. It’s not going to take him anytime to transition back to Green Bay, in fact, like others who have left and came back, I think he will excel in the Green and Gold.

I expect Damarious Randall to play better next season and I think the Packers will draft at least one corner in rounds 1-3, but I have a prediction and it’s just a feeling, but I think House plays well and starts games for Green Bay in 2017.

Ultimately, I also see him playing for the Packers beyond next season. Some players are just better in Green Bay, where they were groomed and developed and in my opinion, House will turn out to be one of them.

By the end of the year, that $3 million deal will be a bargain.

Just to compare:
House - 2014 season - 10 pass defended, 1 interception 1 FF, 0 kick blocked, 27 tackles
Gunter - 2016 season - 12 pass defended, 0 interception 2 FF, 0 kick blocked, 50 tackles
2nd season in NFL (2012) Davon House - 5 pass defended, 0 interception, 0 FF, 1 kick blocked, 20 tackles

Hmmm...

You forget House didn't start as often as Gunter.

If we can get a #1 shutdown CB and have House as our #2 we could use Randall or Rollins for the slot CB and the other as our #4. Then we could move Gunther to PS or chuck him. He was lost half the time. I realize he was not expected to be a #1 CB and circumstances dictated how much he played and he played hard, but he is not a starting NFL CB and probably not even on the 53 if our first 4 CBs are healthy. Thanks, Since '61

Gunter would be on another team's roster about 35 seconds after you cut him. He was the top rated Packers corner in 2016. He never backs down. He's young and learning fast. He's a football player.

Production doesn't always tell the whole story. House is a much better corner than Gunter.

At the Combine house's 40 time was 4.49;
Randall's 40 time 4.46;
Rollins' 40 time 4.57;
Gunter's 40 time 4.69.

In contrast Micah Hyde's 40 time was 4.56 comparable with Rollins'.

I was happy as hell to learn the Jags had cut House. He earned his money in 2015 with the Jags when they played a ton of man to man defense. Last season they had a new D-Cord who used mostly Zone and House wasn't as effective and was benched early in the year. After his last season in Jacksonville you knew he could be had on the cheaper side and he was. Enter Ted Thompson.

Right now House is the best CB the Packers have on the roster. Hopefully Randall and Rollins have something to say about that and perform a whole lot better than last year. Before and after their injuries.

At either the Combine or his pro day, House ran solidly beneath 4.5, I believe. He's pretty fast.

I like the signing from depth and competition perspectives. House was the only guy who could cover Julio Jones in a chilly game in Green Bay years ago. He should start immediately with Randall on the other side.

Personally, I cudda given 2 turds when he left!!! Now all you experts think he's the second coming... get real BOIS!!! CB position will be fine this year with a healthy Mathews and TJ WATT or similar. We need speed at every position, starting with WR and CB! A good press man corner will help but, let's not get all mushy about D House... he wasn't a starter when he left and now he's the greatest thing since Banana Bread. I really don't think so.....

That I understood. What I didn't was Worztik saying we'll be fine at the CB position with Mathews and Watt or similar. They don't play CB but I suppose he means rushing the qb.

I'd think so too. There is no such thing as too much pass rush, but, it is hard to accept that the #1 QB sack defense last year only had 8 more sacks (or 1/2 per game) than GB!

In A ESPN recent mock, TJ Watt is going to go at #24. If that happens; The packers will go secondary. After Randall and House. The CB position needs faster guys. Time to trim the fat.

If the above happens. TT has a problem. @29 he'll have to take Conley or Tre White, Melifonwu should be gone too. @ 61 the best he can do for a cb is Moreau UCLA or S.Jones (IR) But his problem will be trying to get a RB. By his #93 pick; the RBs are flying off the mocks now. So any shutdown CB- undersized /RB is unlikely. He will get shutout like the TEs of 2014.(Reached for Rodgers) That leaves Mixon or Perine. The best bet is WR @93. Possible OL.

I don't think TT is looking at RB with any great urgency. But who knows? It's not like he'd tell anyone anyway. And he shouldn't!

4.56. On the decline. Trade rumors are calm now. I wouldn't want him. Pass rush helped him. And TT said they need RB help. I know your thinking someone can step up like Monty did. Rollins too.

Stockholder....I don't disagree with you, the CB position does need speed. I also agree if the OLB or Edge player TT wants isn't there he could pick a CB. But trimming the fat would suggest cutting the player and the Packers at this point just don't have the bodies. Randall and Rollins are safe this year for sure, simply because Thompson won't give up on them that quickly since they were okay in 2015 and who the hell else is going to play?

Next year is a possibility because it would only cost about $1.65 million in dead cap money to cut them both in 2018.

To me House is a solid #2 or #3 CB. As DPF correctly pointed out we still need a #1 shutdown corner. If Shields had remained healthy and not been forced to retire we would be pretty solid with Shields as our #1 and House as our #2 CB with either Randall or Rollins as the slot CB. If a good CB with speed falls to #29 TT should grab him up. There will be pass rushers left for the second round. Forget the idea of drafting an RB in rounds 1 or 2. Take a CB and a pass rusher 1 and 2. Our offense has plenty of premier weapons we can afford to wait on an RB. I would actually try go for CB 1, pass rusher 2, DL or another CB in the third and depending on who is taken in the 3rd take either the DL or another CB in 4th. We still have 4 picks left for an RB, OL, WR and TE in what ever order and based on BPA. Thanks, Since '61

Personally I think DPF is full of manure. A shutdown corner won't be there at #29. (Everyone knows talent.) I've seen Conley and White gone by #29 too. I still have hope for Watt and Willis. And taking the undersized CB in rd. 3. But if TT can swing a trade, and get 2 number 2 picks. (That would be ideal)

"It’s hard to say what caused House’s fall from grace in Jacksonville"

They switched schemes from mostly press man which House is good at to mostly zone which he is not good at. So hopefully the Packers use him mostly in man and not too much on fancy trap coverages or other stuff that make hime read the QB.

Like it or not, I think House is going to be our #1 CB come week 1, regardless of who we draft. Personally, I think he'll have a very good year, and significantly elevate the play of R&R. That said, I still really want to see Conley in green and gold.

The aquistion of House did two things, first it added depth that could contribute immediatly. Second it gave TT greater options when it comes to the draft. If the CBs that are on the board when his time to pick aren't fitting his slot...he can pick BPA be it a edge rusher, TE, RB or even OT.

Adding depth and allowing for BPA instead of reaching for a CB is pretty good reason to sign THE HOUSE!

Comment of the day right there. Don't have to take a corner in round 1 now. What do you do if McCaffrey, Mixon or Cook is there at #29?

Running backs were out of fashion for awhile, but apparently no longer.

The Packer pass rush wasn't bad, in fact it was decent. When they didn't get pressure the back end was exposed big time. House will help, but we still need more qb pressure.

Coverage and pressure. Pressure and coverage.
Hand in hand. The chicken and the egg.
How will the board fall?
Who will exceed? Which "can't miss" will do exactly that? Lots of moving parts.
It's a fun time to be a fan! Hang on tight everybody!
