Cutting Jake Kumerow the first surprise of the day

The UW Whitewater product caught 12 passes for 219 yards and one touchdown in 2019.

We have our first mild surprise of the day, via Rob Demovsky:

While a bit of a surprise, the move is understandable given Kumerow's limited upside athletically. Brian Gutekunst has been working out wide receivers recently and is undoubtedly looking to improve the potential of the back end of the wide receiver depth chart.

That said, Kumerow was a dependable player who had the trust of the quarterback, and with this particular quarterback, that's no small thing.

Originally an undrafted free agent with the Bengals in 2015, Kumerow spent time in Cincinnati and New England before signing with the Packers in 2017. Last year Kumerow caught 12 passes for 219 yards and one touchdown.

I do wonder if the Packers talked about bringing Kumerow back on the practice squad, as there are six spots available this year essentially without restrictions. However, as a vested veteran, Kumerow would be able to be signed to the PS immediately and not have to pass through waivers. I think Rob's source would have included that info if that were going to be the case. Of course, the Packers could be waiting o see how the waiver wire shakes out throughout the day.

Be sure to bookmark and check our Roster Cuts Tracker throughout the day.

Kumerow was used little and did little. So not that big a deal. I’ll wait to see what the final receiver group is before drawing a conclusion. I am not sure the final guy is in house

To be fair and accurate, in two seasons Kumerow caught only 20 passes for 322 yds and 2 TDS. Rarely used. Maybe he gets back on the practice squad?

Never... EVER, has there been so much made over such a non-descript WR!

Janis had a bigger role on ST and at least caught the 2 hail mary plays vs the Cards. But yeah, he's close.

Awe, damn. I’ll miss that guy. But there’s probably someone with a better future they can keep or get from other team’s cuts.

PS rules have changed this season due to COVID. You can have guys with a certain number of accrued seasons. I actually think he’s eligible.

I don’t think he makes a lot of sense on the PS though, but yes, he is eligible.

Decent depth at a position with lots of questions still.

Sheppard was just as big a surprise given the good camp he supposedly had. I'm thinking Tae, Lizard, MVS and EQ are locks. After that it is anybody's guess, including somebody who isn't here yet. I see Paul Richardson is back with SEA - I always liked him.

Trade bait - Boyle or Linsley.

I fully expected Kumerow to be cut for the initial 53. What I didn't know, and don't know for sure, is whether or not he lines up next Sunday. Since the Packers need 1-2 spots on the initial 53 to put Kamal Martin and maybe someone else on the initial roster before putting them on IR, so they can bring them back this year, Kumerow and Darrius Sheperd seem like obvious cuts. They might play for the Packers this year, but I don't see them as likely claims by other teams, and even if they are, it's not the end of the world for the Packers.

On the other hand, there are other young guys probably not really ready for week one but that they don't want to lose (C Jake Hanson, Jordan Love, maybe some late round picks, maybe Yosh Nijman, maybe even a priority non-drafted free agent rookie).

Kumerow is no loss though I think he can make it to the PS under the new rules for this season.
I’m thinking Adams, Lazard, MVS, ESB and ??? make the 53. We’ll know soon enough. Thanks, Since ‘61

It appears it’s Malik Taylor if he ranks above Ervin. 5 1/2 WRs seem plenty. I think Taylor (perimeter type) suggests Ervin will be getting snaps.

The Packers just cut a 28 yr old WR with career totals of 20-322-2. It's sad that they put together a WR group for camp that allowed that guy to be viewed as a favorite for a roster spot.

Said yesterday here Kumerow would be cut, but I really though Bigleton would be on the 53. I bet the Cardinals grab Kumerow!

Why the Cards? They have Fitz, Hopkins, Kirk and Andy Isabella among others! He certainly doesn't fit there.

it would be great to see him succeed but at this point I think he's just holding back someone else's development. And we need to get faster.

Finally a voice of reason! Kumerow had to go, he was long past the development stage. If they put him on PS, I could see that only because he knows the playbook and could contribute immediately if needed. But keeping him around only prevents someone w/ better tool from developing.

Thanks for pointing that out for everyone!

I don't see any surprise in cutting Kumerow. He was a nice story but honesly he had been cut by 3 NFL teams already, had spent time on the PS of them and was 27 yrs old. He wasn't going to suddenly morph into a viable NFL WR. The #5 or 6 WR are developmental guys. Kumerow was well past the developmental stage of his career.

I'm not surprised. And I won't be surprised if Adams is the only returner next year. PEOPLE THE EXPERTS WERE RIGHT. Gutey blew this last draft. But like Arron Rodgers, WERE STUCK!

You didn’t like the 2018 draft, but it’s looking pretty good now this year with the development that we’re having. If you didn’t like the 2019 draft give it an extra year and will see. Hard to say until the third year whether it’s good or bad.

We all like Kumerow but he was a non-factor as a wr and only played due to injuries. The Packers are also moving away from needing so many WR. I appreciated his blocking but come on, thats not going to be a major factor for a WR though it is important. We all clamor for signing a WR. IF Kumerow is so good why? We can't have it both ways. The bottom of your roster guys, as pointed out by Mr Naglar and really as a general NFL rule is reserved for Development Players that Contribute on ST. W/o the camp insight we couldn't tell if new guys like Degura, Dillon, Ento etc proved just as good on ST a JK.

PS -Arod gets to make "emotional"pleas Gute and ML don't have that luxury. Plus ARod is a leader and is going to say what he feels will help them if the guy plays so why not say positive things about every guy.

PS having AROD;s trust is important but Adams, Lazard, Brown and seemingly MVS all have it now as well so it really makes it a non-factor for your #5 rec. one would think.

Not even a little bit surprising. And hopefully people will stop with the Reggie Begelton nonsense now.
