Cox: Niners' Gameplan for Cobb, Finley Worked

San Francisco 49ers defensive back Perrish Cox talks about the gameplan and halftime adjustments the Niners made for Randall Cobb and Jermichael Finley.

NEW ORLEANS––To hear Perrish Cox tell it, the San Francisco 49ers had all the answers in trying to contain offensive weapons Randall Cobb and Jermichael Finley in Green Bay's divisional round playoff loss.

Not only did the 49ers have a good gameplan for the Packers playmakers coming into the game, their halftime adjustments worked like magic too, according to Niners defender that plays in the dime defensive package.

"They had '18' (Cobb) in the backfield lined up as a running back. That kind of was the tough part," said Cox. "We went in at halftime, me and NoVarro Bowman and Patrick Willis were like, 'If Cobb lines up in the backfield, you take the back, and I'll take Finley.' But then if he motioned out, we'd have enough time to switch it out. It was kind of tough for us at first, but we came down with a plan."

For the most part, the statistics back up what Cox is saying. Cobb had five catches for 24 yards, a measly 4.8 yards per catch. Finley only had four receptions for 35 yards. Neither reached the end zone.

The challenge in containing Cobb was not only how the Packers flexed him in both the backfield and as a slot receiver, but his speed proved to be a tough task as well.

"Coming out of the backfield, he's coming at you with a head of steam, and that's kind of tough," said Cox. "But I think I did my thing that day. I don't think he had a good game that day at all. And then I caught him on special teams one good time also."

Cobb was able to gain 11.5 yards per carry on the ground, but he only rushed the ball twice.

The story of the game will continue to be how the Packers gave up 323 rushing yards to the 49ers in a record-setting performance by quarterback Colin Kaepernick and a strong complement from running back Frank Gore.

But it's probably fair to say the Packers offense didn't pull their weight either. The time of possession was dominated by the 49ers: 38:01 vs. 21:59.

"It was a great gameplan, but it was also me and my brothers," said Cox. "The coaches had a great plan going in, but just the players ourselves, we weren't going to accept a loss at all."

Packers were just beat down in every phase of the game. Having Perry, Bishop may have helped but I doubt to the degree the Pack got whooped. M.M. and TT need understand the problem is more than 7 new shinny picks.

Cox also said he didn't drug and rape that girl (who his teammate was dating at the time) that didn't even know she had had sex when she later turned up pregnant...the baby was then confirmed to be his after a DNA test.

And he was somehow acquitted.

Sorry, just not a fan of this disgusting POS that SHOULD be in prison. Can't even read the story...wouldn't trust a word he says anyway.

Total POS: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/02/perrish-cox-acquitted-of...

My favorite part - "The verdict comes notwithstanding evidence that: (1) Cox denied having sex with the alleged victim; and (2) the DNA of a fetus growing in the alleged victim’s body matched Cox’s DNA"

Between this douche and Ray "the steroid murderer" Lewis I have no idea who to cheer for in the SB. Probably won't watch it.

after the Pack lost to the Broncos I vowed to never watch a Super Bowl that didn't involve the Packers.

that streak will remain alive this year.

Totally agree. This guy has ZERO moral fiber. How do you deny the obvious fact you drugged and raped a woman when the fetus is the albatross to yoru argument?

He calls his teammates "brothers", because they have similar DNA?

that sort of thing (making adjustments at halftime) is for the weak.

teams who are confident in their plans keep attempting to crash through walls (head first) OUTCOME BE DAMNED!

True. But, some would rather attack Cox personally to deflect the weakness of GB's adjustment
