Cory's Corner: Who Is The Packers' No. 2?

Would a No. 2 please stand up?

Remember when there was going to be a healthy competition between Geronimo Allison and Marquez Valdes-Scantling for the No. 2 receiver job? Now it looks like both would struggle to be the Packers' No. 4 guy.

And that's including Allen Lazard, the undrafted second-year pro that earned the public respect of Aaron Rodgers. It's not often that a future Hall of Fame quarterback goes to bat for a guy that barely anybody knows.

Yet, all three guys have been virtually invisible as of late. Valdes-Scantling has 11 receiving yards in the last four games. He had a shot to drag his feet in the back of the end zone at San Francisco, but obviously that didn't happen.

Allison has been a little bit better. He's had 43 yards in the last four games but he hasn't sniffed the end zone. Allison also leads the Packers with three drops and his lack of speed has been an issue.

Lazard is the best of the three in that time span with 120 yards, but averaging 30 yards a game is pretty pedestrian for a No. 2 wideout.

Obviously, with Davante Adams back, he is getting the lion's share of the targets. But Green Bay needs someone else to make this offense hum.

The best bet is Lazard. He has the rapport with Rodgers, he's a got a huge catching radius at 6-foot-5 and he has quick feet. He just needs to get separation and prove that he belongs.

But not all of the blame resides with the wide receivers. Ever since Adams came back from the turf toe injury, Rodgers has been locked on his favorite receiver. That makes sense, because he had 169 targets last year which was No. 2 in the NFL behind Julio Jones.

However, the only way this offense is going to work is if it functions as a complete unit. The reason why things worked early on is because Rodgers simply hit the open man. However, in the last few games, Rodgers is missing the open read or just doesn't want to pull the trigger.

Make it simple and just play football. The Giants will be a perfect respite because they are giving up 260 yards through the air. The only way the Packers advance deep in the playoffs is if they play as a team. They aren't as deep as San Francisco or New Orleans not to be.

Most are claiming that this trio of receivers is dreadful. I don't see it. Lazard or Valdes-Scantling can be a No. 2 in this league, but it all depends on how Rodgers wants to distribute the ball.

The number 2 WR are the running backs. Only if Rodgers throws to them or Lafluer calls the right plays. POint is, use the talent you have. The others will them do just fine.

I'm curious as to how many pick plays the Packers use for their WRs. In watching games on Thanksgiving day it looked like on almost every passing play teams utilized pick routes to some extent. I know they're iliegal but if the refs aren't going to call it teams might as well do it. It seems like bigger slower guys like Graham and Allison would be ideal at running pick plays.

GB offense works best when there is a highly competitive, elite level slot with quickness and smarts. This season the slot has been manned by Geronimo Allison who has zero quicks, spotty hands, no YAC ability and can't create separation. The Pack has force fed him the ball on bubble screens and short throws with zero success. They even tried to run him on jet sweeps? WTF really? A high level slot is often a great fit for PR duties becuase the same qualities needed at slot translate to PR's. So throw out ARod looking at the slot.

Look at TE, M Lewis and J Graham can no longer run. They are slow plodders who can use their size for create space. If you watch Graham his best plays come when he can use his body to box out the defender. When he's trying to catch a ball on a longer pass and has to catch it like a WR he's dropped or had it knocked away on almost every pass.

Go to #2 WR. MVS can run the go route and every once in a while he does a come back off the go. Anything else? If so I haven't seen it.

So you have Tae and the RBs. And right now TAe because Arod and/or LeFleur have forgotten about the RB's.

One last thought. I know it might not be his first choice but Lazard has the frame 6'5" 227, to add 20 LBS of muscle. JMHO he could be an elite TE. He has hands, competitiveness, is physical and blocks. He could play in-line when needed and easily split out. Putting a LB on him would be a complete mismatch. Just a thought but I think he and GB should explore that option for next season. GB would then have J Sternberger, Lazard and Tonyan with room to add a WR and lose little or nothing.

I don't get the "make Lazard a TE" comments. People (and I'm not trying to single out you here) on this blog seem to be hung up on a 'position' vs. 'player' . Jimmy G. is basically a big WR more than a TE. Doesn't matter what you call him. Maybe adding 20 pounds to Lazard would make him too slow (who knows?). MLF bases his offense on using the players skills he has. Just use Lazard wherever you need him. This reminds me of the "What number should Ty Montgomery have" stuff. Who cares whether he was a receiver or a RB, just use him. Same applies here. Just like this entire article. What difference does it make who is the perceived #2 WR ? Maybe that guy changes from game to game. Just use the guy who best works against the team you are playing.

I'm not opposed to the Idea of Lazard as a TE, but is it really as simple as telling him to go gain 20 pounds in the Offseason and let's make you a TE? At 6'5" you'd think he definitely could handle the weight on his frame.

I actually LIKE the kid the Packers drafted this year (Sternberger) and am really hoping we see him down the stretch. He really got behind getting injured but he's been back a few weeks now...It's Time toy at least START to use the kid.

Bearmeat said it yesterday as have I...Draft a WR by hopefully no later than the 2nd round and also sign a FA. You add a veteran WR to this offense to go with Jones, Williams, and Adams and then I believe you really have something. Plus Lazard, Sternberger, EQ, and MVS. Rodgers would have the PERFECT blend of guys he trusts and others who are earning it.

BTW...That "Trust" thing still bugs the hell out of me. Just THROW the damn ball to the open guy Aaron...PLEASE!

Lazard is the de facto WR #2. He lost some weight to try to gain quickness. Let him do his thing and move the chains. He will never be a TE. The One-ring circus has to go. The opponents are crowding the mid zones and putting the double on Adams, so who can step up for the deep ball over the top of coverage?? Rodgers is asking the same question.

During Adams injury, Rodgers utilised the running backs and pretty much gave up on the receivers but their threat is out in the open now. Teams know about it and are taking it away.

People calling for more use of the running backs are missing the point - teams know the receivers aren't going to hurt them so if they can handle Adams, the next priority is to cover the running backs. Teams with a good defence and a strong game plan should be out to wipe out the packers passing game really.

If you have a very weak receiving group and no top end tight end, there is no magic answer. After two training camps, no NFL team thought Lazard was good enough to make a roster. I like him and he should be on a roster but he is way out of his depth as a possible number 2.

Nobody thinks Rodgers is immune from blame or blind to his faults, he drives me mad at times.

But the drop off in receivers over the years is startling. To put up a QB rating of 100 over the season is actually pretty impressive given how weak the receivers are.

We could be waiting a long time for anorher QB after him. Stick in a run of the mill mediocre starting nfl qb with this supporting cast and the situation would be truly desperate. We would probably be competing for a top 5 pick. Especially given the defence which had the luxury of the majority of our best picks is still broken.

No one. They don't have a 2nd WR threat that scares anyone. They needed to trade for one at the deadline and they blew it. Better yet, they needed another veteran back in camp.

Their weapons are (In order): Aaron Jones, Davante Adams. Jamaal Williams, and Allen Lazard can also occasionally be useful. Everyone else? Meh to barf.

Would it do any good to point out that Jimmy Graham, the future HOFer, is above average in DVOA? Or to point out that it’s simply not possible to have above average players at every position? Or that they’re 12th in scoring with their existing weapons despite not bothering to show up in three games.

We have plenty good enough weapons.....if we execute.

I think next year's receiving corps will look like the following:

#1WR Adams
#2WR Draft Choice
#3WR ESB
#4WR Lazard (one of Allison, Kumerow and Lazard with Lazard the most likely)
#5WR MVS (last chance year for MVS to prove he belongs)

#1TE Draft Choice
#2TE Sternberger
#3TE Tonyan

Current Packer group is just too slow and/or lacking in any quickness.

Not sure how you can write an article explaining how bad the receivers are then at the end claim it’s not their fault. It’s odd this year how packer fans are refusing to admit mediocrity or worse on certain positions on this team. We have good positions also, just let’s not stick our heads in the sand anymore on the bad ones. If one more person tells me how the receivers just need reps and it’s not their fault , I’ll barf.

This was a huge question going into camp and going into week 13 game tomorrow, this question along with others burns as bright and seemingly unanswerable.

We appear to be left with asking another question,as repetitious as it is, who or what is the problem, Rodgers and his trust bs, MLF's brandy dandy new offensive scheme or the talent level is nothing more than a group of 'look what I found' pass catchers or 'piggy back ride' givers to their defenders.

While waiting for the 'youth' to develop,a yearly issue that never seems to get fixed regardless of the personnel at multiple positions,GB decided that the trade deadline could offer no help though other teams again benefited from that deadline as the Packers remain dead in the WR position....and again by choice.

Something stinks in GB as we sit and await as our #12 draft pick learns how to play while every other top 15 pick is making good -great contributions to their teams regardless of what their record is at the moment. But I'll stick with the Receiving Group.

Pick one as the reason for the bad play of WR's.
1) Rodgers trust program that near no one passes really.
2) MLF's scheme
3) Receiving Group are nothing more than grade C players.
4) Rodgers is doing a good job trying hiding his assuredly faltering play.

I think its probably a little bit of everything, although I think the Packers are too fixated on getting the ball to Adams and teams know this. When he was injured we spread the ball around more and had better results. I think we need to go back to that and if teams arent expecting it to go to Adams so much then maybe he will get open more often. I also think our QB likes to throw deep far too often. If the OL has trouble with the pass rush (which they did at SF) Rodgers and LeFleur need to get the ball out quicker on shorter routes and let the WR run after catch. Calling too many deep routes when you are having trouble pass blocking is not a good recipe for success.

Maybe we need TGR to break down the drop off in offensive production since Adams came back. Jones has a couple of games with 0 CATCHES....................0. He was tearing it up when Adams was out. Everyone seems to have dropped off and it's bullshit. If AR is ignoring the play calling and changing plays then this will cause major problems. You take what the defense gives you, if it's a 5 yard pass to AJ, then so bet it. He is good enough to break a tackle and get more yards after the catch. They did things a certain way for so long maybe it's going to take a little longer to adjust, because it looks like they revert back to the past few years, WTF. This is the coaches job, we are going to do this my way, it's what I was hired to do.

The receiving group is so weak that opposing DCs are using DBs to defend the pass to A. Jones and take their chances with our WRs after covering up Adams. Besides Adams our other receivers including the TEs can't get off the LOS. This is why Rodgers is left looking only for Adams on many plays. There is no #2. After Adams we go straight down to #4 at best and more likely to #5.

Maybe things would look better if ESB had not been lost for the season. But he is and the group that we have left is just not competitive beyond Adams and Jones. MLF needs to find a way to compensate for the deficiencies in the WR group. There is no hope for TE at least not for the remainder of this season.

If we learned anything from the additions of the Smiths, Savage and Amos to our defense and Elgton Jenkins to our OL, it's that you need athletic players to compete at a high level in the NFL. After Adams we don't have very athletic players at either the WR or TE positions. MVS has some speed but he is a mess running routes unless it is a straight go pattern. Allison is slow and apparently has lost his hands as well. Lazard has had a few flashes but is inconsistent. Kumerow looks like Abberdaris 2.0. At TE Graham is done. Lewis is adequate at best but too slow to make a significant impact. Tonyan and Sternberger are young but have a long way to go.

If I'm Gute I rebuild the receiving corps (WRs and TEs) and actually build the ILB position group during the off season.
Thanks, Since '61

Agree with all you said. I really thought MVS and possibly Kumerow were going to develop more than they have. I also thought our running attack would be better this year since we adequately replaced our two weak Gs. Jones so far had much more success running the ball last season. This would have helped our young receivers. It might all just point to an inability to grasp the new scheme as of yet.

It the defenses are sitting in the hook zones and rushing four, you have to be able to cross them and scrape off some of the defenders. Packer WRs after Adams don't have the feet or speed to break open routes. They don't have a power back and strong lead blocking FB to make teams pay for squatting. Just a weak move by Gutekunst not to secure a WR/PR during the trade deadline period, or even augment the D line.

No doubt one of the many things on Gutes 'To Do' list. The reality, and I hate to repeat myself is this team is young and thin at all levels. That includes WR/TE. I'm sure it is driving Rodgers nuts at some level, but this scheme requires some discipline on his part on the pass patterns, something he seems to have gotten away from lately. Blaming the young WR corp is a easy pass on both Rodgers and MLF in this case. Both Rodgers and MLF need to adjust because the league is on to them. Other teams get video too. We all know that this Packer team will under go major changes next year, but that's next year. This year you play with what you have. We fans know this team is good enough to win. (Division leaders folks) And for now, that it self is good enough.

It would be nice to see Jones and Williams lined up wide to take advantage of some LB matchups. See the Chiefs game. Also, wtf is Vitale? It is nearly criminal he is not used more. Maybe the best route running FB not named Juszczyk. The target distribution should be as follows....

1) Adam's (duh)
2) Jones
3) Lazard
4) Graham
5) Williams
6) Vitale
7) MVS (deep shots only)
8) Lewis
9) Kumerow

That the Number. 2 WR spot remains a question mark with just 5 games left in the regular season is in itself disturbing.

My preference would be a pure WR firmly establish himself as Number 2 and allow the RBs to be RBs first and foremost with occasional quick short range passes out of the backfield.

Let the opponent's D focus on our WRs going downfield in obvious pass plays with a RB occasionally slipping out of the backfield for quick
short passes in space.

Right now Lazard looks to be climbing the WR ladder towards being a number 2 receiver over a not too challenging WR crew.

Can MVS salvage, or launch his career - can he establish himself as a receiving threat in short, mid, long or red zone yardage?

The ladder for WR's in GB you refer to are the type where the rungs break as soon as the slightest extra pressure is placed upon it by the climber having extra pressure placed upon him to climb it....hence the continued tumbling down effect.

Geronimo Allison has had his chance and needs to ride the bench, he looks awkward out there and has too many drops, I doubt the Packers re-sign him after the season. Guys like Lazard, Kumerow and even Grant should be given more chances at this point and why they are not at this point is a mystery to me? Kumerow has great hands and runs decent routes, when they do play him he makes plays. Lazard is very physical has great potential and needs to see more touches, certainly more then Allison at this point. We havent even seen Grant so it would be nice to know what we even have?

I also think the Packers are too focused on getting Adams the ball instead of mixing it up or finding the open guy. When he was out with injury they seemed to spread the wealth better and had a better passing game because of it. After Adams came back they got away from this and you see the result.

I'm not giving up on any of our receivers after Davante, especially Lazard and MVS.
They are all inexperienced, and that's the difficulty; but I'm still hopeful at least one or two step up toward the end of this season, as the new offense is developing.
I hope the coaches will target our young receivers after scheming them open, and that we also provide opportunities for Tonyan, Lewis and Vitale.
Let's try to get our running backs matched up with linebackers, and also available as safety valves.
It seems we could work the middle of the field more often, including crossing routes.
It's a great challenge for Aaron Rodgers as leader and orchestrator for this talented but young group of skill players.
Through all the ups and downs of the next month or two, we need him to be encouraging in spreading the ball around -- keeping guys involved and upbeat.
On the balance, I think we'll come out ahead for at least two or three more victories; but along the way, it may require a high level of patience at times to maintain positivity -- on the part of our quarterback, and us as fans.

It doesn’t matter who #2 is. We’d like to throw about 35 times each game. You throw to the backs, you throw to the TEs,and you throw to Adams. How many targets remain?

The opposition needs to field a CB who can cover different types of guys, and I think it’s better than putting all your targets to just one guy. I like the #2 By Committee approach. Lazard, Kumerow, and MSV are a fine group. And they might keep getting better and they are cheap.

Have to agree. The next block Graham misses, the next ball he drops, should be his last. We are getting next to nothing out of the tight end position. There is no drop off between Sternberger, Tonyan and Graham. At least by playing the young guys they gain experience and the coaches can evaluate them with greater insight.
Send both Allison and MVS to the practice squad. Maybe they will get the hint. Bring up both Shepherd and Grant to replace them. I know Shepherd might try to catch a pass with his face mask, but at least he will get open. As for Grant, I know that anyone is better than MVS and his 2.5 yards per game since his phantom injuries.

The four games Davante missed were against Dallas (def rank 6th), Detroit (29th), Oakland (24th) and KC (24th). GB did not win all four games that Davante missed because GB is better w/o Davante: rather, it is because GB had the good fortune to play primarily bad defenses. There was no tape for Dallas to watch of a Packers team sans Adams. Jones ran well, and the TEs had 81 receiving yards while building a big lead against the Cowboys. 3 INTs kept Dallas from coming back: that's the game Amari Cooper had 226 yds. and Gallup another 113 yards receiving. I hope no one is expecting 81 yards per game from the TEs, unless Sternberger shows something.

W/O Adams VERSUS with Adams
Jones: Averaged 67.75 rushing yds + 70 rec yds vs. 44.5 and 9.25.
Jamaal: 43.67 rush, 24 rec. yds vs. 29.29 rush, 18.43 rec, 4 of 6 TDS
Graham: 35.75 rec. yards vs. 24 rec. yards
Lazard: 46.67 rec. yards versus 26 rec. yards.

Aaron Jones had 137.75 yards from scrimmage w/o Adams and just 43.75 with Adams. That's 84 yards per game less. Jamaal drops from 67.75 yds. from scrimmage to 47.72, a drop of 20 yards/game. Lazard drops 20.67 per game and Graham 11 yards. Davante Adams averaged 67.33 yards/game in the 3 games since he returned with 118 of his 202 yards coming against the weakest defense, Carolina. GB played LAC (4th by yds allowed, 11th by points), SF (1st/2nd), and Carolina (19th/26th). The return of Adams is supposed to augment the offense instead of it being a zero-sum situation.

It seems true to me that GB has had an offense by spurts all season. Defenses can put a slow LB on Graham. He doesn't get much separation and doesn't win contested catches. He and Lewis get their yards by scheme. Only Davante, Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams are consistent performers. Everyone else is a Once-A-Week Beau. (Good grief, that's an archaic phrase - it means that they are pretenders who can only afford to go in style every once in a while.)

NYG has a pretty bad secondary. After Jenkins, their next three CBs would have zero snaps if they played for GB. The safeties are okay but Peppers is out, so pretty meh. OTOH, only Clark would play if GB had NYG's top 5 DL. Dexter Lawrence is already a stud. Two of the 4 LB's are okay.

NYG's personnel aren't that terrible. They have little offense and a -11 turnover stat. With Tate and TE Engram out, they have even less offense.

We have good enought WRs and everyone can see that. Adams, MVS and EQB are a really good group. Maybe there is not much behind them, but nobody in the NFL has 5 all pros.
If AR finds his way back he will have a lot of help, but first he has to find his way. And since a couple of years im not so sure anymore he ever will.
Top QBs do a lot more with way less and thats what is a elite QB about......
But some guys will always find other reason...….no weapons (most funny of them all), bad o-line, no running game, bad coaching, soft D, the Refs, Goodell, Mark Murphy……..whatever.

After their All-American running back Taylor was stopped cold early in the game, the Badgers uncharacteristically went to the air with some creativity -- some nice passes to the fullback Stokke, a beautiful screen to the tight end Ferguson in the middle of the field, a couple of dashing end-arounds, a bootleg by Coan at quarterback, and that sweet screen on third down to Groshek for a enormous romp downfield -- as well as interspersing deep throws for big payoffs (with the help of matchups against linebackers).
Wow!!! That's the kind of deceptive artistry I'd like to see from the Packers.

I don't think LaFleur or Rodgers have a deceptive or imaginative bone in their body. They develop a game plan and stick with it whether it's working or not.

The Badgers would lose to Miami by 50 points. Stop comparing college football to the NFL. The Big ten is a moribund league full of pretender schools. Next thing you will be saying is Woody Hayes should be the Packers coach. Scheming, creativity ??? There is no comparison between college and the NFL. And by the way, who are the Badgers anyway?

Fullback. Tight end. Think maybe Bucky will loan the Packers some after the season... (Actually Crist changed his playbook in midseason. Made a real difference in getting his other play makers the ball and taking the pressure off Taylor.)

IMO the Pack should go after Tavon Austin in the off season. Natural slot guy, blazing speed & he would fill another glaring need....returner. Lazard looks like a legit #2 to me. And don't forget, Equanemous will be back next year. Geronimo is a free agent at the end of this year, I don't see them re signing him.
