Cory's Corner: What Will Games Sound Like?

DId you hear that?

I certainly didn't. Especially after the Green Bay Packers just said that there will be no fans at Lambeau Field for the first two home games.

The Raiders, Giants and Jets said back in July that fans will not be in attendance for home games this season.

It's only a matter of time before all teams follow suit. But that doesn't make it any easier. The league stands to lose $7 billion if no fans attend games this year. That's a lot dough, especially for a league that many think is only concerned about the TV broadcasting rights, which is north of $5 billion.

So what will the NFL look like this year? Will teams be allowed to pump in more crowd noise on third down? What quirky things will teams do to highlight that each game is in fact being played in their home stadium? Will the Packers still do the Lambeau Leap after a touchdown? I mean, the equation is a little bit different without fans to hug Jamaal Williams and potentially spilling a 16-ounce can of beer on his pants.

There are plenty of people that are unsure if the NFL will even have a season. I'm not sure if the NFL will finish, but it will start. Teams have been lectured numerous times about the mistakes that MLB and more specfically, the Miami Marlins, have made. With NFL rosters twice the size of its MLB counterparts, it's going to be even harder to make sure that everyone is following the rules once the game is over.

When games finally kick off in September, TV viewers will be introduced to moments of deafening silence. You know how you would hear the random, "You suck!" chants or even "We love you Aaron!" from the boom mics on the field? All of those nuggets that truly add to the full experience of not just football, but sports in general, will be lost.

But things won't just be different from a fan's perspective. With less or no fans, many defensive players seem to think that they hold the upper hand because they will hear the offensive line checks and the quarterback checks at the line of scrimmage. That is correct until you have Aaron Rodgers. He tips the scales in his favor because he's the master of cadence and free plays. I would suspect that cadence will be stressed more, and even with more defensive coordinators highlighting it in practice, Rodgers will still get plenty of free play positive gains.

It's going to be a different game when the NFL kicks off on Sept. 10. The gameplay might seem similar, but there will be nuances to the 2020 version that many offenses will take advantage of.

DId you hear that? Neither did I.

It won't sound any different in Minnesota. They've been piping in fake, amplified crowd noise for years.

Maybe they could play "The Sound of Silence" before the game. Or have a showing of "The Silence of the Lambs", or "Silent Movie". Maybe the cheerleaders could be mimes. How about the teams go to a silent count? The possibilities are endless!

Like chopping down a tree in a forest in the middle of nowhere. The crash impact will resonate many miles down to the wood splintering into tiny pieces and the squirrels yelling let's get the hell out of here!
