Cory's Corner: What identity does Packers offense have?

The Packers have reached the halfway point of the season.

And after eight games, I still have no idea what identity this offense is.

Remember August? Everything was still fresh and the offense was supposedly going to be amazing? Aaron Rodgers got another weapon in tight end Jared Cook to open up the middle of the field, which would free up the outside. Eddie Lacy was in a contract year, which would motivate him and the offensive line was hailed by Mike McCarthy as one of the best units of his 11-year Green Bay head-coaching career.

To say that things haven’t gone as planned is quite the understatement. No one is quite sure what Cook can bring to this team because he has only played three games. And even when he’s played, he has only gotten a grand total of 11 targets.

Lacy came into this season with plenty of ammunition. He was routinely criticized for his weight problems last year and he wanted to prove people wrong. Lacy is a running back that needs carries to wear down defenses late in ballgames, so it was puzzling that he never got more than 14 in the first two games after starting slow in both games. He’s now got his usual ankle problems again and it looks like a return this season is doubtful.

The offensive line has played well. Lane Taylor has done a yeoman’s work stepping in for Josh Sitton at the 11th hour. But the line isn’t consistent enough for it to be considered great. David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga don’t maintain their blocks long enough at left and right tackle.

Then there’s McCarthy. After watching his receivers continue to struggle to get open, he initially didn’t change the receivers’ routes. Recently, he has instituted rub routes and crossing patterns, but what has happened to the slant pattern? With the explosiveness gone from the Packers’ receivers, getting the most from that unit has fallen on McCarthy.

And finally, Rodgers looks like he doesn’t want to be out there at times. He’s making careless throws and worse yet, isn’t pulling the trigger when receivers do get open. Rodgers needs to get over himself and start trusting his guys. He may have a problem with so many younger wideouts on this team, but that’s not his choice. If they’re open, throw them the ball.

The Packers come out with consistent four and five wide receiver looks one week only to follow it with 10 targets to tight end Richard Rodgers — who came into the Colts game with 13 targets in six games. They have handed the ball off to receivers Ty Montgomery, Randall Cobb and Davante Adams. But even if a true running back comes back this week in James Starks, the running game isn’t going to change much.

The Packers offense came into this season with so much promise. But now with Green Bay sitting at 4-4, a 9-7 season would be a welcome sight.

So exactly what identity does this Packers offense have?

Frankly, I have no clue.

It would be one thing, if there was just one thing. But it's all over the board and it changes week to week.

My call for an identity would be schizophrenic, or maybe Multiple Personality Disorder (and all of them jacked up).

No offense Cory but another article where Rodgers and trusting his receivers comes up in the story. I'm so sick and tired of hearing about Rodgers and his "Trust Issues" I wanna puke. The man makes $20 Million a year and then some. Why is the hell is this even a discussion still, just THROW the ball to that open guy 7 yards downfield instead of the guy 50 yards downfield into triple coverage.

If Arod doesn't trust throwing to open receivers then we really have a problem. Either we have the worst professional receivers in NFL history who can't catch a wide open pass, or there's something wrong with the way Rodgers is processing the plays. I think its' the latter.

It appears with man coverage our receivers rarely get open in the first few seconds (probably the case with most receivers in the league). But instead of staying in the pocket and waiting for the play to develop, he gets happy feet and starts moving around. He gets off his spot resulting in errant throws or missing receivers breaking open. Then it becomes a fire drill with the receivers trying to come back to ARod with defensive players closing in, At this point ARod decides to either throw a pass into tight coverage, out of bounds or take off running. It reminds of a very talented Michael Vick when he was playing. If the play didn't develop quickly Vick would start running horizontally, losing track of the pass routes, as the play broke down completely. Because of the running around Vick often didn't see wide open receivers. Must have drove his coaches crazy.

The trust issue to me is not so much with his receivers but with his o-line. Maybe it's a dozen years of taking hits. But until ARod reverts back to being a pocket QB, waiting for plays to develop, I don't see this changing,

I get it. It's smart to avoid taking shots. It prolongs your career (see Brett Favre and off the back foot throws to receivers in double coverage or not planting his feet). It keeps you on the field. But it also prevents him from going through the full progression of pass routes and often not seeing wide open targets, No one can be that distrustful to eschew throwing to wide open receivers. There has to be something else.

On NFL Live they just showed all the F-Ups by Rodgers just in the Indy game alone. It's depressing to see and have these idiots pointing out all the blown opportunities by Rodgers. Not just passes for first down but for TD's.

Another couple of losses I'm all for putting Hundley in and see what he can do over a few game span. I like Hundley and think he'll be a good QB. Maybe some QB desperate team will offer like 3 firsts, 2 seconds, and 2 thirds for Rodgers. If Bradford was worth a 1st and 4th which could possibly be a 3rd rounder, Rodgers has got to be worth a ton. All it takes is ONE team.

I'm very quickly getting there too. 2 more losses, which I think will come in the next 3 weeks, and I'd jump at 3 1sts for ARod. Goodbye TT/MM. Blow it up. Start over.

All we've needed to see has come in the last 18 weeks of regular season football. McCarthy isn't going to change and either is Thompson. Rodgers went from NFL MVP in 2014, to God knows what in 18 games. Obviously with what happened in Seattle, Rodgers has no faith, trust, or respect for McCarthy. McCarthy because of this lack of respect can no longer coach Rodgers who's developed some REALLY ugly habits in those same 18 games.

This team is at a crossroads IMO with 2 of the most important pieces of the team, the HC and QB. Until this is fixed this team won't/can't progress. Rodgers and McCarthy's problems are clearly apparent, the solution is not. At least yet.

If this team wins 2 of 3, regardless of how poorly played by either team on either side of the ball, most everyone here who is bad mouthing will re-board the bandwagon as if all is ok and heaven forbid they make the playoffs....success will be deemed acquired/achieved even if another 1st round loss and the seasonal replays of the last 5 will resume.
The reality deniers will be appeased.
The realist will once again be tarred and feather daily.
The song will remain the same....give the loons a little something free, like a backdoor pass to playoff land via a crap division....all is great.

If being a fence sitter means that I call it like I see it, then yes, I am a fence sitter and proud of it. I call it like I see it and I always have. I won't hesitate to call out our players or our management when they suck. Which of course doesn't mean that I hate losing any less, nor that I am any less of a passionate fan.

The thing is, Taryn, that it's always clear that I am 100% for the Packers to succeed in the long term. Which necessarily means at times that in the short term I am "happy" when warts are exposed that EVERYONE sees but the current administration and players refuse to see, until they accept it and change. You're nowhere near as bad as Cow, but that same bleed-green-and-gold-tenor is not always as clear with you.

I sometimes wonder by the tone of your posts, if you are not happy to be proven right yourself, even if it is at the expense of the team you profess to love. That's what other fans, including myself, are reacting to. The blame-shifting, near constant arguing with others, and self-martyrdom that follows on your end just makes it more annoying.

I have predicted a loss and I show disdain fir players at times and a couple in particular but I have never ever not hoped that the Packers win or a player to not play well...even Perry has my hope each week.
I call it as I see it and stand my ground. I don't change week to week because of one play or win. That's why I'm amazed many here don't suffer with ankle and hamstring injuries from getting off and on the bandwagon like the players in regard to consistent play week to week. I look at the overall and decide.

I would't even call it pessimism, not this year Bearmeat. After the Bears and Atlanta games many of us thought they finally turned some kind of corner but didn't have them in the SB or anything like that. We were cautiously optimistic. The Indy game took what very little we had to be optimistic about, and put it on the shelf until a new regime comes in.

Who pee pee'd in your Cheerios this morning? First you attack the people of California calling them names, questioning their intelligence, even quoting a movie so bad I didn't think anyone would remember it, let alone verbiage from it.
Then you suggest "Most Everybody" here that comments will "Re-Board the Bandwagon".

Check it out, I never GOT OFF and I'd bet my friend Bearmeat hasn't either! Just because some of us "Go Off" and want EVERYBODY fired, or are pissed off because our hero's have sucked the last 18 weeks doesn't mean we jumped the "Bandwagon". It means we're FANS. The sun rises and sets over Green Bay for me in the Fall and early Winter. Hell even during the draft and free agency even though we don't partake. That's what many "Fans" do. They get excited, mad, ecstatic, sad. They cuss, scream, want to throw their TV off the Balcony or throw the closest object through the screen. It's all part of it, at least most "Fans" I know.

It might not make sense to a "Realist" like yourself. You don't have to agree with it, like it, hell, you can keep making fun of us I don't give a damn. Just please don't suggest I ever "Jumped". I've been here since the 60's with my Dad and am still here.

DVA, was going to make the same point about Bakh and Bulaga. They are easily two of the best things going for the offense this year, especially Bakh.

Makes me wonder what game Cory is watching. The o-line, in general, is not the problem. It's probably the strongest most consistent unit on the team and the one of the best in the league for that matter.

I agree with Cory.

The article DVA cites limits itself to pass blocking. I agree Bakh and Bulaga have been excellent at pass blocking. But I assume that when Cory wrote "David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga don’t maintain their blocks long enough at left and right tackle" he meant as run blockers, not pass blocking. Cory could have been a little more specific.

I wrote a comment about the run blocking being mediocre and the power run blocking going from not very good to terrible this season just a few days ago.

FUBAR is the identity of this team's offense. This team was 3-1 prior to the Dallas game and should have been 4-0. Since then they have gone 1-3 with their sole win against the lowly Bears. The offense was struggling but the defense was playing very well. It appears that they have lost confidence on both sides of the ball. In the Colts game even the ST caved in. We'll see if MM has pulled this team together for this week's game. As for the offense's identity if it wasn't for erratic it would have no identity. Some of this is due to injuries and some due to the questionable play of Aaron Rodgers. This team has no RBs so it's impossible to be identified as a running team. The passing attack has no TE and Cobb and Monty have been in and out. Adams is a possession type receiver, Jordy remains hampered by his recovery and Janis can't catch. That leaves us with rookies T. Davis and Geronimo. Not much to build an identity around. Regardless of injuries, quality of players or ARs problems this is another situation that has gone on too long already. Where are the coaches? Isn't it their job to get the team ready to play? We can talk about Rodgers and other players salaries but how much are paying 26 coaches to prepare this team and develop games plans. Why is Rodgers not seeing or not throwing to open receivers? How about we find out and get it corrected. Why are receivers not getting separation or running their routes incorrectly? Find out and get it corrected. A game or two is one thing but issues never get corrected on this team. Why? Our defense plays soft forever. Why? When the same issues are allowed to go on game after game and season after season I'm afraid that is comes down to management and coaching. I guess we'll see if our coaches have any answers this Sunday. But right the team's identity, especially of offense is a cluster f@#k. Thanks, Since '61

Agree that all the receivers that you mention have their own issues with dropped passes. But the point I was trying to make is that whether it's dropped passes, poor tackling, poor STs, inconsistent QB play, etc. issues arise with this team and they never go away. How many seasons did we wait for the safety position to be resolved? How long for the ILB position to be resolved? And the jury is still out there but our play has improved thanks to Ryan and Martinez. How long have we waited for a TE who can actually play the position? How long do we let Rodgers throw balls all over the place when there are receivers open for 1st downs? Isn't MMs version of the no more rocket balls speech long over due? How many seasons do we have to endure our defense collapsing late in games and give away leads or fail to make stops to get the ball back for the offense? And yes Janis caught 4 passes the week before, but one week does not a season or a career make. He is paid to catch not to run. As Lombardi once said to a very good receiver (certainly better than Janis will ever be or hope to be) who dropped a pass similar to Jains last week, "I pay you to do one thing, catch the football. If you want to get paid to run go to the track, and the next time you drop a pass just keep running out through the tunnel and don't come back." That's the message our army of coaches needs to send some of these players, maybe all of them. Again my point is, where are the coaches? Every week we here MM talk about fundamentals and pad level. Well, in my business we call a guy like him a NATO. No Action Talk Only. That's what we're getting from MM and the coaches. Let's see what happens this week and if Janis makes any catches. Thanks, Since '61

Excellent comment Since '61, but I have a feeling it will be the same ole same ole this week too. I don't trust this defense to hold a lead and now I can't trust Rodgers or his Receivers to make a play when needed. The only way Capers Defenses could hold leads is when Rodgers and Company could build a big enough 1st half lead and add a point or two in the second half to eek out the win.

According to espn: Janis has had 13 targets with 9 receptions for 73 yards and 1 td. He's pretty much an average 4th receiver, perhaps with more targets he'll improve. He's not a whole lot worse than Donald Driver and James Jones were their first three years.

James Jones caught 99 passes for 1390 yds (14.04 average) including 47 receptions in his rookie season. Jones added 6 receptions for 92 yds in the playoffs, albeit in 3 games.

You're closer on Donald Driver. He caught 37 passes for 520 yds (14.05 yd average. He added 2 receptions for 26 yds in the playoffs.

Janis caught 4 passes for 95 yards and has caught 9 for 78 so far this year.
He caught 7 passes for 145 yds in the playoffs so far.

McCarthy's fatal flaw is that he is irrationally attached to his scheme and even when it is clear he doesn't have the personnel, he's going to do what the scouting tells him. In other words, McCarthy doesn't understand the identity of his team either. He allows the identity to be dictated by whatever the scouting report says about the next opponent.

MM: We have the best receiver group in the league, so we run ISO routes."
WORLD: But coach, your receivers can't get open. They're really not the best.
MM: They've got to execute and get open.
WORLD: How do they do that?
MM: That's our plan. They have to play better."

MM: We've got to run the ball.
WORLD: But coach, you've got (literally) no RBs.
MM: Doesn't matter. Give it to Monty.
WORLD: Hey coach, that worked! Why did you go away from it?!
MM: Our scouting said they were soft on TEs. Had to get into the TEs.
WORLD: But coach, your TEs are terrible.
MM: They're susceptible to TEs. Our TEs have to execute and play better.
WORLD: How can you get them to do that?
MM: Fundamentals.

Now, I'm all for laying the blame at the feet of TT for his irrational refusal to really even consider all the team building paths open to a GM, but it's both of them.

Assuming an 8-8 season (or probably 7-9), Mark Murphy. It. Is. Time.

O identity in a nutshell. 1ST half-MM "this is my game plan, other teams will have to adjust to it. 2nd half teams adjust- MM " this is my game plan and teams will have to adjust to it. When you watch the last 20 games or so the stubbornness/lack of the teams adjustments is evident. I want to blame it all on MM but the D is the same way. Culture change needed? I wish it was that easy but its not. TT/MM package deal. 2018 contracts up. Murphy might be done with his $150 million pet projects and give some credence to what is going on during his watch.

2 more years of this could send this franchise into a dark abyss. Murphy should be added to the list if those 2 aren't gone after 2016. I mean even a guy like Murphy has to see Thompson isn't getting it done. To many positions are ignored for years at a time before he does something.

I wouldn't doubt if Thompson tried to sign Lacy to a one year deal for 2017 because the contract would be CHEAP, and not draft any other RB.

Supposed to be a deep draft for RB. I haven't done any research but if they keep playing like this I may start early.

You and Taryn should get a room. Seems you already exist in the same echo chamber.

Bearhead Again! --- You are pretty much an embarrassment to most knowledgeable Packer Fans. --- Seems like you either need some better meds (ask your doctor) or you need to find your closest AA meeting. -- Either or, you're obviously troubled.

Anyone who suggest a person needs Meds or an AA Meeting is obviously troubled themselves.

Seems the "12 Steps of AA" would help you a bit, especially the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Steps.

Few more losses and I'm all for getting rid of MM and TT. Rodgers stays because I think a lot of this is his being fed up with MM and TT and can you blame him.

DING, DING, DING!!!! I've thought that myself for quite some time starting this season TB. Personally I think MM is fed up with Thompson too. There was something behind that comment by McCarthy after last season........."We might surprise you this year" ....... That was what McCarthy said about Free Agency.

My two cents. Rogers can pick apart a zone d as well as any qb that played. On the flip side he is leary of man coverage as he he hates interceptions. In atlanta he was all world first half. Sec have atlanta went man rogers started his roo out routine trying to buy time.

The quartet of pleasantry on CHTV: Cow, Stroh, Samson and Taryn.

So nice to see feces smeared all over the walls of one of my favorite websites again and again.... :/

Don't be shy....you're as much a part of the feces smearing as anyone you claim a culprit.
