Cory's Corner: What Does Aaron Rodgers Really Want?

The four-time All-Pro had 12 interceptions in 2022 — the most since his first year as a starter in 2008.

It has been the elephant in the room since the Lambeau Field scoreboard read triple zeroes after Detroit put a stake in the Packers playoff hopes.

What does the future hold for Aaron Rodgers?

The 39-year-old quarterback is scheduled to make $59.515 million in 2023. But here’s the rub: Rodgers may have just logged his worst season of his pro career. When the score was tied, Rodgers completed only 58 percent of his passes with one touchdown and three picks. He was 26th in the league in completed air yards per completion — one spot below Matt Ryan.

Then there’s this. “If there’s a rebuild going on, I won’t be a part of it,” Rodgers said this week on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

OK. I know I’ve said this before, but the biggest misstep you can make in this league is holding on to a player too long. The Packers have a very difficult decision with Rodgers. Not just because he has won the NFL MVP four times, but because Rodgers is bar none one of the best passers in the game — if not the best one.

I have never really been a big Tom Brady guy but the reason why he has won so much was because he consistently had help. Brady has never won a Super Bowl with a defense that was lower than eighth in points allowed. But despite all that, Brady had it all figured out. He knew that in a salary cap sport, if he only made a certain amount, his team would be able to go out and get a defensive end, wide receiver or cornerback. And that’s why Brady has seven Super Bowl titles — he has played the game perfectly. That doesn’t mean that he has always been the most talented quarterback, it just means he knew how to work the system.

Of course, there is the other angle about Jordan Love. But I’m not even worrying about the fifth year option. I’m just concerned if the Packers should bring Rodgers back.

The quick answer is yes. Rodgers proved this year that he can still play. His attitude at times was worse than rotting fruit, but some of his throws were still ripe and juicy. He proved that he can draw milk out of a stone, but he also proved that he needs proper time because his scampering ability is nearly gone.

This comes down to Rodgers though. He needs to put in the time. Christian Watson proved that he can be a viable weapon in this league, but Rodgers needs to get some proper rhythm and timing with him and perhaps another wideout taken in the second round after the Packers bolster the offensive line in the first round.

Rodgers can make the offseason rounds, but what exactly does he want? The Packers have just about given him a percentage of Brown County, along with Randall Cobb, Marcedes Lewis and his other selected buddies. The one thing that Brett Favre didn’t like as he aged was how alienated he felt in the locker room around other young players. The Packers solved that by adding fringe veterans to appease Rodgers.

Even though Rodgers wants to admit this is about Green Bay, this is really about Rodgers. He needs to look deep inside himself and figure out what he really wants. Does he want to make a commitment in the offseason and connect with a coaching staff and young wideouts? Does he do what it takes to put the Packers back on the Super Bowl radar?

In other words, does he put the Packers before himself?

I've reached the point of Aaron Rodgers burnout. In the face of hardship, loss, conflict, it's never about him, always someone else. He talks leadership constantly, but rarely displays it.

Gronk admonishing him about his focus on MVP's, not championships was spot on but entirely understandable where it came from. When your individual awards outstrip your team accomplishments by a factor of 3x, that default to 'me, not we', surprises no one.

He's a rare talent, but whatever his personal demons are, they've limited his ability to set them aside in pursuit of a greater good. Guys who walk around with chips are petty savers bent on getting even, and we've seen that in this entire cycle since the drafting of Jordan Love. Had he ever acknowledged that leading up to the selection of Love his play was declining and his uber-intelligence understood why the Packers hedged their bet at the position, he'd be much more credible. From the "I threw a wrench in their plans", to "It's all about the people", then holding the franchise hostage and crippling the salary cap to bolster your ego, I say cut the shit.

It's always been about me first, everyone else second and if that costs championships, c'est la vie.

The Packers off-season math has to be addition by subtraction, and that means hewing away their biggest piece of deadwood. In the process the Packers will lose a HOF QB, but they'll shed an extra head coach and GM in the process, and history's proved having pairs of those is the road to perdition.

I probably just need more coffee.

Here's the quote you linked to:

[Rodgers}: "I don’t think any team outside of maybe the Texans this year – there’s a couple teams, maybe – who might say, ‘Yeah, we’re rebuilding. We finished down at the bottom of the league and obviously we’re going to start over.’ These teams who have a new GM or head coach and they’re drafting pretty high, they might admit that they’re in some sort of rebuild. Most teams in the middle of the pack aren’t going to say, ‘Hey, we’re in a rebuild,’ unless we have a crazy cap situation, so no GM or president is ever going to say, ‘We’re rebuilding.’

“I’m sure that’ll trigger somebody asking them, ‘Are you guys rebuilding?’ and the answer would be, ‘Of course not. We got this and we got that.’ But it’s a mind-set. If they want to go younger and think Jordan (Love is) ready to go, then that might be the way they want to go, and if that’s the case and I still want to play, then there’s only one option, right, and that’s to play somewhere else. If it’s not and they, you know, like, ‘No, no, no, we still want you to play,’ and this and that, then it’d have to be the right situation with the roster that looks like we can win it all.

“Because there’s no point in coming back if you don’t think you can win it all.”

Note that Rodgers says that teams with "a crazy cap situation" are in a rebuild. If that statement doesn't include the Packers (thanks to Rodgers' own contract, mostly) then I don't know what does. And if he (AR) doesn't even recognize this, then he's certainly "not the smartest man in the room" (which I've never thought him as) and shows that he's just as deluded as Murphy.

He also STILL doesn't put his own stats below the desire to get to a Super Bowl.

Jurp, you didn't address it, but I assume you don't agree with what Bill Huber wrote in the article I linked to.

Regarding the Packers salary cap: Rodgers cap hit is 10th among QB's in 2023 and 8th in 2024. In 2023, it's a fairly significant amount less than the others..

It's fair to say that Rodgers contract would contribute to any cap woes the Packers may have, as it is with all veteran QBs. However, when compared with other veteran QB's, his cap hit seems to be somewhat reasonable.

I tried to link to Spotrac QB cap hits, but for some reason it wouldn't work.

2023 Packers cap hits:
Rodgers - $31.6M
Bahk.- $28.7M
Clark- $23.9M
Jones- $20M
Jaire- $19.9M

All of these contracts are part of the Packers cap issues. That's the price of doing business.

I actually DID address Huber's point - Rodgers did NOT say anything about winning a Super Bowl as a goal - just that the team isn't rebuilding and he's willing to come back if he thinks he can win one. It was small potatoes compared to his MVP statements.

The comments by Rodgers in relation to MVP were taken out of context and I find it laughable that people are relying on comments by Gronk as intelligent...now with that said I'm mostly thinking we need to cut the cord and move on from AR. Not sure Love is the answer but we made the decision to take him in the 1st round so we better man up and at least give him the opportunity to put up or shut the F up. I'm thinking AR will go to the Jets like his predecessor and we'll begin a new chapter.

Im certain that Aaron Rodgers will do the right thing for the franchise that has given him everything.

GB gave him 3 years to unlearn all of the Tedford-isms that he came saddled with.

GB gave him one of the best QB coaches of all-time to help him remake himself in the best image possible in Tom Clements.

GB gave him a learning platform equipped with an ironman HoF QB ahead of him to get both the do's and don'ts from.

GB gave him the starting QB job when a future HoF QB was still around, giving him the confidence he needed to grow into the job.

GB gave him time to adjust once the HoF QB was jettisoned and didn't panic during his early NFL experience.

GB gave him all the money he could want and more throughout his entire career beginning with renegotiating his deal when they made him the starter and keeping him the highest paid player in the game throughout his long career.

GB gave him all the adoration his fragile ego needed to maintain the swagger of an NFL starting QB.

GB gave him input on areas of the football operation clearly beyond his grasp and responsibility thus assuaging his enormous ego.

GB gave him his buddies at his request so he wouldn't be lonely in the locker room or his cold solitary home.

No wonder Aaron Rodgers seems like your basic millennial man-child who has been protected, catered to and spoiled for his entire life and just can't see why everybody is against him...

Time to kick him out of his basement apartment in GB's home and by trade force him to get a job and his own apartment in another city. I hope he does well... somewhere else.

What does Rodgers want? Well, apparently he wants another MVP based on his recent comments (and Gronk rightfully questioned why he doesn't mention winning another Super Bowl).

He also wants to keep all of his buddies around like Cobb, Lazard, Lewis, etc. AND also wants to get paid handsomely. You can't have both!

As noted in the article, Tom Brady understood this: he wanted to win a Super Bowls at all costs, so he didn't sign any of the mega deals.

This is show business, not a friend business. Rodgers wants to keep his buds on the team, no matter how old they are. He's looking at it through a short-term lens while the front office needs to protect the long-term viability of the Packers.

Funny thing is, come May, the Packers have to decide on Jordan Love, too. The moment that 5th year option gets exercised, he's owed a fully guaranteed $20M. Financially, I don't see how they can keep both QBs on the roster without letting all of Rodgers' buddies go unless he takes a massive pay cut (which he won't).

We are WAY past the time to trade Rodgers and move on.

I think I need to go back and listen to the Pat M interview with Rodgers this past Tuesday again. IIRC when Rodgers mentioned winning another MVP next season it was him answering a questions about his ability to play at a high level.

Now I admit, when I listened to that episode of "Aaron Rodgers Tuesday" on McAfee when I was doing my morning clean-up on the kitchen before work. I'm not always listening that intently so I could have missed something and it was a long interview so I'm not listening to it twice.

I just don't care that much about it personally. People here who are familiar with me know how I feel about Rodgers. If what Gronk is saying is correct and it wasn't taken out of context then great, blast him all you want. I just didn't take it that way when I heard it and this is coming from someone who CANT STAND what Rodgers has become.

Here's apparently what Rodgers said about winning a Super Bowl:

[Rodgers}: "I don’t think any team outside of maybe the Texans this year – there’s a couple teams, maybe – who might say, ‘Yeah, we’re rebuilding. We finished down at the bottom of the league and obviously we’re going to start over.’ These teams who have a new GM or head coach and they’re drafting pretty high, they might admit that they’re in some sort of rebuild. “Because there’s no point in coming back if you don’t think you can win it all.”

If he thinks that keeping his buddies on the team will help him win a Super Bowl, he's deluded. Also, note that the SB reference at the end is centered on his own needs, not the team's needs ( summarized as "no point in me coming back if I can't win a Super Bowl")

Thanks jurp... I actually remember that part which is amazing for my memory!

"If he thinks that keeping his buddies on the team will help him win a Super Bowl, he's deluded. "

Bringing back Cobb and Lazard won't move the needle one bit on this team. Those guys aren't part of the "Few Guys Away" Rodgers was talking about when talking about competing in 2023. I like Lazard but he's a #3 or #4 at best. Plus the Packers can't afford him...Let him WALK. Personally I think Watson is a great #2 with a possibility of being a #1. Doubs is a solid #3. What I'm saying is this team still needs that true #1 WR. They also HAVE to get a TE, Safety, OLB.

Trading Rodgers, Jones, and maybe Bakhtiari, would go a long way in getting extra picks to work with to make sure that happens.

At this point IF the Packers could still get at LEAST a 1st for Rodgers I'd be happy. Obviously this makes Murphy look like an idiot, a BIGGER idiot for not letting Gute pull the trigger last year, but they MUST get that salary off the books, take the hit THIS year, have another killer draft, and be ready to win for a LONG time starting in 2024.

pretty sure this MVP thing is getting taken just slightly out of context, misinterpreted somewhat..people will read into it what they want but go back and listen again...still its not a good look...I guess...if he were to win another MVP with the Packers that would be a good thing cuz it would probably mean a winning season and perhaps post season...I don't see it happening though....not with soft ass MLF on the sidelines...

"IIRC when Rodgers mentioned winning another MVP next season it was him answering a questions about his ability to play at a high level."

Not exactly, Nick. The actual question was whether or not Rodgers could see himself playing for some franchise other than Green Bay.

But it doesn't matter. As you rightly point out, Rodgers was talking about whether or not he could still play at a high level. Only a complete idiot would say that Rodgers should NOT be honestly assessing whether he can still play at a high level or not. And if Rodgers does want to win another super bowl - as he clearly said he does, in this very interview - then the practical application of that desire is that he needs to go out and play at the very highest possible level.

Yeah, and dumb people act like he just cursed out their mama. Cuz the last thing we need in Green Bay are all these frickin' players who want to play at an MVP level. *eyeroll* Gosh, I hope Jones and Gary and Alexander don't want to play like MVPs, too. Imagine how that would suck!

But lots of people are stupid. They get emotionally invested in some decision, they demonize some player or front office guy, and they're not going to let silly things like logic or the actual meaning of words change their opinion. Whenever they hear their devil-guy talk, no matter what he says, it triggers a knee jerk reaction that causes them to kick themselves in the nuts. Maybe that explains why they're so cranky all the time.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I was in favor of drafting Love. I was in favor of letting Love sit for a couple years. I was in favor of trading Rodgers last year. I was certainly NOT in favor of signing Rodgers to his current contract. I would definitely be in favor of any reasonable way to trade Rodgers before next year.

Personally, I wasn't in favor of drafting Love, but since we did, I was in his corner from Day 1, if only because some guys at APC lost their minds, (including one writer...) Looking at your draft night meltdown Noonan! LMAO - That was funny.

I was definitely in the TRADE HIM TO DENVER crowd last year and am definitely in the TRADE HIM TO NYJ crowd this year.

Get what we can for him, roll with Love for all of '23, no matter how bad it might get. I seriously don't think it'll be as bad as an AR12 with a broken thumb bad...

If Jordan plays at least as well as AR did his first full season or better, Gutey looks like a %'in genius...

If he bombs, well, Bye Gutey! Hopefully Murphy is canned too, along with our weak A$$ coaching staff.

BirdDog: Well, maybe I should be more clear... I damn near fell out of my chair when they drafted Love, I certainly didn't EXPECT the Packers to grab a QB. But I did feel that the year before, Rodgers looked lost, old and totally washed. I had to eat some crow when he went on to win MVPs - which apparently are bad things, now LOL - but I thought Rodgers looked finished. So when they drafted Love, it made perfect sense to me.

Being more concerned about winning an MVP than taking your team to the Super Bowl (unless it has your buddies on it) is the bad part. When asked about whether he could still play at a high level, a more introspective man might've said something like this:

"Can I play at a high level? Absolutely. I'm bummed that I didn't play as well as I expected this past season; some of that can be attributed to my thumb injury. I know that I can play at an MVP-level again, and I'm looking forward to working with our young receivers and running backs so that we can win a Super Bowl this coming season."

But he didn't. He didn't bring up a Super Bowl until asked if the Packers were rebuilding, and then only obliquely and without mentioning HOW he expected us to get to one.

What does Aaron Rodgers WANT?

here is one thing that I am certain AR wants that nobody talks about.

AR wants to be the big fish on the stage at Canton when he goes into the HoF.

If he were to walk away in the same season as Tom Brady that would NOT be a part of the program when they would both go in a s first ballot HoFers.

AR will watch verrrrrrrry closely what Brady does.

I think AR would like to hang 'em up, but he will never do so in the same year as Brady since that would make him, at best, the second best QB entering the HoF for that year.

His ego is just that huge. Bank on it, I got this one right.

I agree that what you wrote is one of the reasons why he still pushing to play.

People with ACR state of mind (egoistic, see himself as perfect, smarter than others, manipulator and, not less important, very wealthy) are, in more than 95% cases, very vindictive. It would not surprise me if he playing this "game" to put on MM, BG & MLF on path to long term disaster cripling them at Salary cap, and making sure that situation will make Packers irrelevant for years. Additional plus in his eyes are that fans will remember him as last and the greatest Packers QB.

Where is the logic in that claim?

I'll try to explain ant to remind you how this saga developed. In 2020 draft Packers drafted Jordan Love. They were not tell that to Aaron Rodgers prior the draft and he was surprised (by his own words). He reacted somewhat like: "OK, I understand why franchize did that, they need to look for the future." That 2020 season NFL did not have real preseason and there was no TC or any other form of collective (team) activities. Everything was fluid. But, when season started, trainings started as well. ACR saw that Jordan Love has talent and he saw how he progress fast. He understood that he can not relax, because Packers have possible replacement for him on the team. After season finished and Packers lost to Bucs (do not forget how pissed he was on MLF who was decide to kick FG, instead to give him the chance on 4th down) he went from team to home and probably analyzed season and his level of play. He waited till the last moment before draft and than he let atomic to the public. Again, BG went with D on the 1st round pick, RB on 2nd, TE on 3rd and he saw and understood that Packers drafting for future.

All that after saga you know and I do not want to repeat. Packers finally persuaded him by restructuring his contract to come back (he knew at the point that Jordan Love is not yet ready).

What he thinks and how he feels about Packers we all heard at the press conference before 2021 TC. MLF was trempled and becomenservant of ACR. But he has MM as ally and needed to win over BG. So, as his contract expiring after 2022 he started to talk about retirement and that got him another, massive contract plus some rights which not even the most valuable employee should ever have. Those rights enable him to messing with jobs of others in Football part of organization. But he is not satisfied yet. He wants to see Packers on their knees. He do not want to help Packers. He wants to make of Jordan Love's carrier mess andbto force him to left Packers, so he can stay as the best ever QB which played for Packers.

If you think this is just another conspiracy theory, sit back and follow how the this story will end. Because everything he did and do is in coordinace with I just wrote.

My hope is that this plan will never come to realization. For Packers, fans and ACR.

The only way they could keep both Rodgers and love would be to sign Love to a new contract, not the use 5th year option. Of course, if they re-do Rodgers' contract, that would only push more down the road.

I'd publicly thank the Packers for their help in developing my skills so that I can be a starter in the league, that I appreciated playing in such a storied place as Lambeau, and that I thank the fans for all their support (this is irony). Then, after signing with an up-and-coming team like the Jets or even the Panthers for decent money, privately tell Murphy that he can go fuck himself.

He could demand a trade and it could happen. If he had any leverage, it might mean something...but he doesn't. The only thing he can really do is not report, in which case the Packers list him as Reserve/Did Not Report. They still have his rights, they get his cap space back, and Love gains squat.

"Reserve/Did Not Report (left team): Players who have left their team or stopped playing NFL football but have yet to submit retirement papers. This player does not count against a team's roster limit or its salary cap."

So maybe he voices his concerns to management, but management holds all the cards until his contract ends.

The 5th year option is a team option that's guaranteed when the team picks it up. The player can choose not to report, but his rights still belong to the team--and I think if he chooses not to report, the contract tolls.

"The 39-year-old quarterback is scheduled to make $59.515 million in 2023. But here’s the rub: Rodgers may have just logged his worst season of his pro career. When the score was tied, Rodgers completed only 58 percent of his passes with one touchdown and three picks. He was 26th in the league in completed air yards per completion — one spot below Matt Ryan. "

Hell, just look at Rodgers play against Detroit this year, against one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL. Hell, a rookie safety from Detroit OWNED his ass this year. He had 3 interceptions alone against Rodgers and it could have been 4. And surprise, surprise, weren't 2 of them AND the one called back on passes down the sidelines, where Rodgers seems to ONLY throw the ball?

Or what about the playoffs when he DID have a team good enough to win the SB? It was Rodgers play in the moments you'd expect a QB paid that much to lead you down the field. The 2021 team should have won and the 2020 team I could make an argument for as well. In 2020 we have 1st and goal from the 8 and he can't get it done. Three straight incompletions and a PI from Kevin King and it was over. In 2021 he got what HE WANTED...A playoff game in Lambeau WITH fans.

I'm done with his SMALL play in BIG moments. I'm tired of his enormous ego. I tired of hearing about all the extra stuff Mahomes, Allen, Brady, and even Derick Carr do in the offseason to get better with their WRs. Hell, Drew Brees did it EVERY offseason. Our guy, the guy we made the highest paid QB again is off tripping on Ayawaska and acts like he's doing everybody a favor when he does report.

To answer Cory's question, What does Aaron Rodgers really want? Who cares anymore. Love can do the same things, win as many games IMO, and actually make Green Bay fun to watch again.

I am beyond caring what he wants, thinks, or who he is as a person off the field. It is, for me, simply and very clearly, just no longer a good or even plausible fit between him and this franchise. Yes, I think he could have success, briefly, on another team, but here it is simply over and there isn’t a sound pretense anyone has proposed to think otherwise. Sadly that still leaves us with this President and this coaching staff, but baby steps back to competitive reality.

These articles on Rodgers are as bad as the tabloids Now.
But I’m still not buying what your writing.
Rodgers wants to win. Make money. Have Fun.
Surrounding yourself with your friends. Brings fun.
Making Money is what the NFL is about.
And Rodgers wants to win. Regardless if they're champs.
The Missing pieces have always been there since 2010.
He can’t do anything about that. We’ve seen the changes.
Changes he never liked. Changes that changed him.
If there’s one thing you hate growing old. It’s change.
Your comfort Zone isn’t what it was. And you fight back.
Rodgers can still play. We know that. Everyone knows that.
The problem is change. And playing at a higher level during it.
Which he’s done. Until the decisions hurt him. He needs Help.
But the calvary just isn’t on the way. ( Love wasn’t the calvary.)
Change was! And still is. It’s the dog nipping at his heels.
Why should he move on. Screw Love and the changes.
The development was never about him.
The revolving door; never brought the weapons on time.

Are we the Green Bay Rodgers or the Green Bay Packers? Since when did what one player wants become the driving force behind offseason decisions? This should be about the needs of the Green Bay Packers so they can compete for championships.

The cautionary tale for the Packers is the New Orleans Saints. The ownership of the Saints fell in love with Drew Brees (admittedly a very likeable guy) and kept him well beyond his best years. Brees' experience and moxie as well as the Saints willingness to push cap money far into the future to keep big dollar vets were enough to keep the Saints competitive for a playoff spot, but not for a Super Bowl during Brees' waning years. The Saints have been irrelevant since Brees retired and they are still deep in cap hell. The Saints will likely remain irrelevant for a few more years.

Is this the future the FO wants for the Packers? Like Brees in his waning years, Rodgers is still a good QB, but he is no longer a great one. His declining mobility, occasional inaccuracy and limited ability to connect on the deep ball bear a striking resemblance to the decline by Drew Brees. Couple that with the cap hell that Rodgers contract means for the Packers and Green Bay will look very much like New Orleans in the near future.

I hope Mark Murphy makes the right decisions for the Green Bay Packers and not the Green Bay Rodgers.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try real hard, you'll find, you get what you need.

He has money, and fame. He apparently wants people to believe that he's still a top QB, an MVP, who can get the job done if only the front office will do what he wants.

I'll be dismayed if that happens. The rationale of bringing back the MVP for a year is different than keeping Love on the bench after the GM has said "He's ready". And since Rodgers has signaled he doesn't want a rebuild, and the offense on this team needs a rebuild, then we'll move on.

I fully expect that Rodgers' ego will drive him to try to pull a "Brady" and go to another team and have a magic season. So we'll trade, and the trade details might include a little salary cap relief for the team. Probably not a lot in terms of draft picks. The Plan will continue to move forward, as it always does, and we'll have Love at QB when the season starts. I think the rest is mostly theater.

Actually, Rodgers doesn't even believe that that Packers NEED a rebuild. From later on in his McAfee interview:

"I don’t think any team outside of maybe the Texans this year – there’s a couple teams, maybe – who might say, ‘Yeah, we’re rebuilding.

We got this and we got that.’

Like Murphy, he can't see the forest for the trees.

One thing most folks forget is Aaron Rodgers is a brand. The more the media and fans focus on him the longer his brand retains it's money making viability.
Favre parlayed his brand into several ventures post-retirement, not all of which were apparently legal. But he kept "Favre" in front of people and it kept the money coming in. Rodgers is doing the same. I truly don't think Rodgers gives a rats ass whether the Packers win another title or not. What he is concerned about is making sure his face is still in the media, think State Farm commercials and Jeopardy. He also is concerned about scooping out as much money is possible, like most of us to be fair. One interesting twist would be to follow Favre to one of the media centers of the world, New York, and put in a year to further expose his brand.

Not much new will likely be happening until after the Super Bowl so today's Aaron Rodgers story is just so much hot air until push-comes-to-shove time around the start of the league year.

I always wonder how Favre stayed married. I was told on good authority about Favre getting tossed out of bar in Crivitz for, shall we say, less than gentlemanly behavior. Favre nearly served me a beer one night after a game in Green Bay at a bar I can't remember the name. The Packers were often there. They put Favre behind the bar to keep the crowd at bay and he could pick and choose who to talk to. I nosed up to the bar and set my glass down. Favre reached for it but the bartender grabbed it and filled it up.

When I lived in the Appleton smudge, I worked with several guiys who saw Favre out-and-about with women not named Deanna. In all cases, this was before they married. One sighting was at a gas station in Green Bay, where he was filling up his car and talking to the THREE women inside it. I suspect the number of women was an exaggeration, but the guy did get Favre's autograph on a receipt.

Two things:

"...because Rodgers is bar none one of the best passers in the game — if not the best one. "

Should be:

...because Rodgers WAS bar none one of the best passers in the game. FIFY

And:

"In other words, does he put the Packers before himself?"

Are you really that misinformed? It's been obvious for at least two years that the answer to this question is "No", and his thoughts on McAfee that he can win another MVP (with no mention of a Super Bowl) more than confirm it.

Given the salary cap implications for 24 and 25 if the Packers allow Rodgers to come back, they should absolutely NOT allow that to happen. Unfortunately, I'm very confident that Murply will "bring the band back together" for this season. Cap hell awaits.

So how do the Packers move on from Rodgeres. They had a similar issue with Farve. As long as Farve wanted to keep playing, the Packers would not move on. They had Rodgers sitting and waiting, but the front office and I bet the board of directors and major shareholders would not part until Farve chose to go first. Think of our fan base and the board of directors. They will be hesitant to dump a hall of fame QB. So they waited until Farve made HIS decision. Just because he changed his mind doesn't mean they had to bring him back. They traded him to the Jets.

So pretty much the same here. Don't dump a hall of fame QB until he decides himself. And I think that time had come because Rodgers gave a go ahead for a trade. They will have move on someday and it might as well be now rather than two years from now. The board of directors and the front office can now allow the change.

So... Trade Rodgers. With the right team, he will do OK. Get out from under the cap hell and rebuild. Draft a couple of QB's just like in 2008. And start over. They can honor Rodgers and still move on.

Having gone through the Favre debacle, and having just concluded a disappointing season in which it was obvious that AR wasn't playing as well as he has in the recent past, I think a majority of fans are now tired of Rodger's bullshit and just want him gone. I think it wouldn't be a hard sell for the team to cut AR loose. Except in Northern and Northeastern Wisconsin....

Cory, nice article but have to take issue with you comparing Brady to Rodgers.
Most of the people that post here will relate to what I'm stating. Brady and Rodgers comparison are ridiculously similar to another pair of QBs in the sixties and those two were Starr and Unitas. One was a great passer, the other was a better QB. The better QB won more championships while the other was recognized as the best passer of his time.
Being a QB is so much more than being able to fit the ball into a target area of a foot thirty yards away. Brady has the best field vision of any QB in quite some time, quick release, and a leadership factor that the team embraces. Rodgers is missing that leadership issue and narrows his field of vision in pressure situations.
Having said that...what does Rodgers want? He wants continued fame. Something that feeds him every game when he makes that one throw where everyone says "whoa what a great throw". Unfortatly those are happening less and less and he's looking, maybe grasping for straws that will keep that going.
Anyway that's MHO.

This has become a version of "GroundHog's" Day. The question should be "What does the Green Bay Packers want?"

By the Green Bay Packers I mean; Mark Murphy, Gute, Ball and Matt LaChooch. That is the question that the media or someone should be asking one or all of these people. I realize that Rodgers is the face of the team, the focal point of the team, he is in fact the team. But someone, somewhere, needs to flip a switch, move beyond Rodgers and discuss what the team is about besides Aaron Rodgers.

Regrettably, Matt LaChooch has already stated that he wants Rodgers back for 2023! But this is an NFL HC who spends a good part of his time on the sidelines flapping his arms. Gute has claimed "that we will do what's best for the team" in terms of restructuring the vets contracts. But what does that means? And of course we know that Murphy has proclaimed "WE're not idiots."

So does all of this mean that the Packers want to maintain the status quo?? Does it mean the Packers will restructure Rodgers contract to open up cap room? does it mean the Packers will trade Rodgers so that Love can finally play? Are the Packers really going to keep guys like Bak, Lewis, Crosby and Jones? These players are all among my favorite Packers but really??? This team needs to stop living in 2017 or 2020? They also need to stop living in the pre-salary cap era.

It's too soon to claim that the Packers are bringing the band back together yet again but it is certainly looking like that is where they are going? If yes, why? The focus is always on Rodgers but not every decision the Packers make can be based on Rodgers and what he wants or doesn't want. He may decide to retire at any time. Then what?

The Packers need to make some serious decisions about the salary cap, their players and the team's direction for the short to mid-term.

What do the Packers want? Do they want to contend for the SB or do they want to maintain the status quo? Do they want to contend for the SB or be just good enough to reach the playoffs and accept the occasional seasons like 2022 where they don't reach the playoffs but they come close. Building a playoff team and hoping that games break their way once they reach the playoffs has proven to be not good enough. The team needs a different attitude and a different level of mental toughness than reaching the playoffs and hoping for the best.

What does Rodgers want? Irrelevant. Turn the page, move on, it is time. Thanks, Since '61

Your question should be "What does Mark Murphy want?" At this point, with the reporting structure that he's put in place, Murphy is effectively "the Packers". The rest of the FO are now forelock-tugging yes-men. Their opinions simply do not matter.

As posted on a different thread, the Packers as a corporate entity are most interested in Titletown and the money it brings in than the football aspect of the organization. Super Bowls, I think, no longer matter much in the scheme of things at this point.

Jurp - yes that is a fair point about what does Murphy want? And that appears to be keeping the ban together until he retires. Leaving the Packers in cap hell and with a big, ugly slide in "Titletown."

They are a corporate entity (As I have myself have posted here many times) but a non-profit corporate entity which means that as long as the cash is coming they and Murphy are not responsible to anyone unless they violate their non-profit charter.

There was a time when the term Titletown was a reality in Green Bay. They had won 6 NFL titles from 1929 - 1944. That's what the term was originally based on. Then they fortified that term for Green Bay during the Lombardi era with 5 more NFL titles in 7 years. 11 NFL titles total in less than 40 years made Titletown an appropriate term for Green Bay. But now it's been 2 NFL titles or (SB's) over the last 54 years which hardly justifies Green Bay or anywhere being called Titletown. Yes it's a reminder of Green Bay's history, tradition and glorious halcyon days of the past. But that is no reason for the current management to continue to live in that glorious past.

It's become as though management has decided that we're the Green Bay Packers and we can do whatever we want and as long as we have Aaron Rodgers we'll be OK. WTF??? The league has long since moved on and teams are passing the Packers by in terms of how they manage their teams, how they play on both sides of the ball, how they deal with players and most importantly what they expect from their players nd their coaches.

Continuity is fine, tradition is fine but not at the expense of the current options and opportunities which can help the team move forward. Lombardi arrived after years of losing in Green Bay and changed everything. Bob Harlan became the President of the organization after another long losing cycle in Green Bay and changed everything. I believe that time has arrived again in Green Bay. This time to prevent a spiral into another long losing cycle. if the Packers wait for Murphy to retire before they decide to change up it just may be too late. What really concerns me is that if Gute is the presumptive replacement for Murphy will anything change even when Murphy does retire in 2025. Or will Gute just carry on as Murphy has? That's just too many Ground Hog Days to think about. Thanks Since '61

I am not sure where the rock is that will be turned over to find Mark Murphys replacement, but the logical or in-house candidate pool looks thin.

With Ar12s ego, I'd expect him to come back with a request to be traded to the Jets. Here's why... When was the last time a HOF QB actually offered his retired jersey number to an active player? IDK if it has ever happened? It's the biggest market in the world. From the smallest market to the biggest market for the biggest ego in professional football, seems fitting.

In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if the Jets brain-trust got together and figured out the only way they won't get fired for the Zach Wilson debacle is to bring in a FHOFer - Just so the NY Media will forget at least for awhile that Wilson has been a bust so far. Bringing AR12 in for one or two years with a chance for a Super Bowl would at least give the media something to focus on and give the Jets FO a chance to save themselves.

There is a chance Wilson, watching AR12 go about his daily business gives him the time he needs to get his shit together too. Not that AR12 will mentor him, but just sitting in meetings with him he'll learn something. IDK if the Jets can afford to bring him in, but it would be a good story, and to have both of our HOF QBs go to NYJ seems somehow fitting.

Honestly, I expect Murphy and Gutey to bend over backwards for him again and AR12 come back and say how it's not about the money, it's about the people, and look how much of a team player I am. The only way we trade AR12 is if he demands a trade. I don't think our FO has the guts to do it without AR12 asking for it!

What does AR12 really want? I think he has a pretty good idea what he wants, but he won't tell us until he's damned good and ready. Right now he has all the power and I think that's the way he likes it...

This is more of a chess match than anything between the two. Who will be saying "check mate" is yet to be decided.

You be you #12, just take your talent, act, attitude to another city that hasn't experienced you for a long duration. To them, it will be fun, exciting, something new and not stale or expired in my fandom world.

If I wanted this kind of theater...I would watch Les Miserables, Cats, Phantom and on and on. Go get Jeopardy, start a new cast of Friends show.

Your talent can win you the big one possibly in another city. I personally don't care anymore what you want. That is not my job. What I want is for you to be all in to make the best Packer team possible. If you can't or don't have the desire anymore, bye. People say that you have nothing left to prove, bullshit! Everytime someone steps on the field (especially with the high compensation), they have to prove themselves. I fear a player on my team that feels they have nothing left to prove, on a team sport. If their heart isn't in it, find something to fill that void but get out of the way for others that can't wait to prove themselves, win or lose.

You bet AR has something to prove! He has to prove that he can take a team on his back again and get to the dance - let alone win it. But I don't think he has it in him. He is so deluded that GB owes him and that he doesn't have to bring maximum effort and a team first attitude. That is wrong on so many levels. Its time for him to be coached and become a player again - not a diva with a different agenda.

What Rodgers wants isn't really the right question. Yes he has a strong voice in the organisation, but how the Packers head coach and GM envision the future, is the real question.

Most of us (I think) accept the premise that the Packers would have been better off if they had traded Rodgers prior to the 2022 season (especially when we get past short-term and into the mid-to-longer term future). The Packers cap situation would have been much, much better (and much of the pain of that will come due in the next few years).

Even WITH Rodgers, the Packers did not look good most of the year, and it really should have been the year the Packers tried Love out to see if he could be a plus starter. Don't get the idea that I have some dislike of Rodgers, I've enjoyed his play a great deal - it's the cap situation and the future at QB I'm looking at. I'm not grinding any axe of personal resentment here

All of that is relatively obvious with the benefit of hindsight, an insight that has little value beyond fans being able to say "Told you so", if they wanted to trade Rodgers before the 2022 season - his value was really at a high-water mark then.

The 'run it back one more time' has cost this franchise dearly, with most of the pain still to come, it was the more timid approach, it didn't work, it cost a great deal to do, ...................and its looking like the Packers are going to make the same mistake this year that they did last year.

Doing the same thing again that failed last year - it just isn't very smart, but rather than acknowledge a mistake was made, I think the management WILL run it back again this year and I think the results will be the same in the coming year as they were this past season, disappointing.

Although it pains me to say it, I think the only changes to coaches will be to replace the better ones that get promotion elsewhere (most likely with worse ones) and keep the underperformers on the team for the sake of mutual reassurance and comfort.

I think the Packers push more money into the future with void years, conversion of signing bonuses, etc. I think Rodgers comes back for another year. I think they struggle to even qualify for the playoffs, like they did this year.

Losing Rodgers - he cant be released due to the cap hit - though a trade or a retirement allows the team to move forward and start to deal with their terrible cap situation. All this negativity is unusual for me as I'm generally a positive person, but I do think management need to be bold and embrace the future - continuing to hang on to the past is just too expensive and too damaging to their cap health.

So, to the Packers management, GM, HC, I say, or even shout "BE BOLDER !"

PS I see @since'61 has the same kind of thinking that it is more about the HC and GM (and maybe Murphy), than Rodgers.

I am a GB packer fan first, and foremost. I have come to the conclusion that AR is not. I am sick of his selfishness and lack of team first goals. Bravo to Gronk for saying it publicly.

I would rather see this team go 0-17 next season with Jordan Love and without AR. Trouble is, I don't see this FO doing that. Our FO is convinced AR is the only answer no matter how much they have to give in to him. I heard a friend call the GB FO "Mark Murphy and the Jelly Fish". I kind of liked that.

I am tuning out AR comments from now on. It only feeds his need for endless attention and drama. The trouble is what team will take him in a trade with his high drama / selfishness? Regardless, GPG!

If healthy I think Rodgers has a 30+ TD and single digit int campaign in 2023, on the Packers roster or not. Can he win a Super Bowl I think that window is shut. That being the goal I think it’s time to see if Jordan Love is the guy.

Rodgers won’t be healthy, at least not for the bulk of the season. He’ll have some injury, refuse to sit because he knows that if he does , Jordan Love will outperform him and he’ll never start for the Packers again. On top of that, at age 39-40 he’ll be that much slower to heal.

He’ll also be even slower of foot, his arm will be weaker and his vision will get even worse. It’s going to be a real shit show if he’s back next year. If Rodgers returns, the questions will be whether the Packers have the balls to bench him and if so, when.

What does AR want? He wants enough offensive playmakers around him to get deep into the playoffs. Gute did a poor job of replacing DA. Even with DA we needed a good TE a #2 WR and a better OL that could open some lanes and run the rock in the post season against better DL's. AR wants another MVP which shows...It's not me keeping us from the super bowl...It's the GM/Prez not getting the right pieces around me. AR needs a near perfect team around him to win it all because he often fails at 1 thing...MOVING THE CHAINS IS HOW YOU WIN...NOT THROWING LOW PERCENTAGE HIGHLIGHT REEL BOMBS.

except with the O line and MLF's offense, moving the chains seemed extremely hard...stuffed at 3rd and short way too many times not to mention the Red Zone debacle..

I'll admit I didn't watch every single second of every Packers game this season, so I missed when 12 "proved that he can draw milk out of a stone." That's some full-on David Blaine shit, right there. Was it part of a halftime show or in an interview with Kristina Pink? Anyone have a link?

Look there is only one player here, Rodgers and what he wants. He is not planning on retiring, to what? He is willing to redo his contact he said today which I interpret that he doesn't want a trade.
So he is playing next year probably for the Packers not the jets . Another diva boy off season event comes to a head.
