Cory's Corner: Tim Boyle Has Earned The Job

I've seen and heard arguments.

I know that many people like DeShone Kizer because he's the veteran with real experience, thanks to 15 career starts.

There is value to real-world experience. However, after the preseason, Kizer didn't look like the quarterback that was the trusty veteran. Tim Boyle did.

Kizer looked rattled, confused and overmatched. He didn't have poise and just didn't look the part. Conversely, I was really impressed with Boyle this training camp. Here's a guy that was only active in one game last year and he looks like he belongs.

Many people like Kizer because he has the pedigree. He went to Notre Dame, was picked in the second round and was tabbed as the new hope for the Cleveland Browns. That lasted one season after he went 0-15 as a starter.

Obviously the other argument is this: Does it really matter? Meaning, if Aaron Rodgers misses at least three games due to injury the Packers' season is likely done anyway. And there's credence to that. But, I would bet that Boyle would be able to scratch out at least one, maybe two wins.

I like how the defense has transformed into a ball-hawking unit, how the Packers actually have some depth on the offensive line and how the running backs look fantastic early on.

Boyle has earned the No. 2 job. I would cut Kizer because I would rather have a postitional player elsewhere on the roster. And the reason is simple. Boyle has simply looked the part.

This isn't going to be an easy season for the Packers. It's a transitional year with a new scheme that hasn't had a chance to get its sea legs yet. To make things even easier, it just makes more sense to go with the guy that has the confidence of the rest of the locker room. That's the guy that nobody knows from Eastern Kentucky, not the blue blood from Notre Dame.

Keep them both for one more year of development. Both very young! See flashes with both. This last game thought Kizer looked improved.

In a track meet , would you keep an extra fat guy(two instead of one) in the 440 or an extra high speed hurdler?

If two backup quarterbacks have some experience and the one with the most experience is still inadequate, I will put my money on the other guy.

Please keep Boyle and let Kiser find a job where he might be capable.

Barnacle,
As fans we are always impatient and we are always excited about the new young player with 'potential '.

If you only keep 1 backup QB and Rodgers goes down now you do not have a backup to the backup and Packers are scrambling. Do not believe there is any one bubble player that has more value for the 53 than having the 3rd QB.

If you cut one it would have to be Boyle with hope's of getting him on PS (very risky). Kizer more experience and more likely to win a game this year. Neither backup QB's cost much and both extremely young with upside. If the Pack can continue to develop them Kizer likely traded prior to rookie contract expiring leaving Boyle as primary backup to Rodgers.

Will vent some here: Why when Packers out of playoffs last year didnt they play Boyle those last 2 or 3 games? As result, Rodgers incurs his 2nd NFL concussion and Boyle has no game experience. Nuts and only hurting Boyle and Packers now. Wont even talk about draft positioning.

Pretty sure round 1 of 2020 will be either a OT, or QB.

I don't particularly care which one the Packers choose, but don't keep both. They both have had a year plus with the Packers and neither has been able to clearly out perform the other. Cut one and save a roster spot for a player who might be able to help the team.

Then scour the waiver wire to see if some other team made a mistake and dumped a better backup QB than either Boyle or Kizer.

A little surprised with Kizer getting cut but not terribly disappointed. Boyle has been my guy since last pre-season. In many ways cutting Kizer and keeping Boyle eliminates a lot of question marks and allows Boyle to really focus on being the #2 QB. Obviously Gutey is not done with the QB situation. At minimum he has to put one on the PS.

Agree completely, I even have faith that behind the #1 offensive line Boyle could actually win games. Throws a nicer ball than Kizer and looks more poised. This is a real test for Gute and MLF.

Couldn’t disagree more. Boyle remains a prospect needing a lot of work. I couldn’t give a rats behind for Kizer’s pedigree. In fact I was a Boyle fan last year, but the fact is that he is not close to being consistent enough to hold a game. He alternates from poor to decent and then back. On merit and skill, while he looks decisive, he is some way behind being able to do some of the things Kizer does.

If they can trade Kizer great. If Boyle is our number 2, We are in real trouble. Could he be in a year or two? Possibly, but this year he better be QB3 at best, and I think he would get through to the PS.

And that’s the point: Boyle has not earned the spot if Kuzer is traded, he would have inherited it by default. That isn’t good enough. So who comes in? Boyle would have to be kept on the active while that QB acclimated. That takes a spot away that I’d rather use elsewhere. Hope sny trade for Kizer is an upgrade. Hope we aren’t just keeping 3 QBs because we are indecisive.

If we are trading Kizer, who was adequate at best, we absolutely need to bring in someone who is more consistent and able to do more than Boyle. Not sure who that will be, though those have similar system knowledge.

If the trade is for a future pick and we stand pat with Boyle, that will be my first major disagreement with Gute. A quarter of him throwing the ball in the dirt and we lose a game if Rodgers misses time. If we are just keeping 3 then I think we overvalue Boyle and waste a spot I think could contribute more. If a Kizer trade brings a player upgrade, so be it, but then we need a more ready QB2, but at least the use of a spot for third QB would have offsetting value this year.

Boyle was exciting because of potential, he still has a long way to go (as expected) and didn’t get as far as I’d hoped this year even.

The most simplistic way to evaluate a QB performance is TD/TO ratio. Rodgers is regarded as one of the best in large part to the number of touchdowns produced versus interceptions. He is elite. Kizer is on the opposite end of the spectrum.
...................Games......TD........Ints......Fumbles.....TD/TO
Rodgers:......165.........338........80..........29............... 3.1/1
Kizer:.............18............11........24...........7.............. 0.35/1

During 2019 Preseason Deshone improved his ratio with 2 TDs and 2 Ints for a ratio of 1/1. That is still far below 2:1 ratio expected for an average NFL starting QB. Boyle led the 2019 Preseason QBs with 6 TDs and no interceptions. Statistically, he won by a mile.

In short, Deshone Kizer's productivity consistently falls well short of what it takes to play winning football. He is not an NFL QB. Boyle is far from being a starting caliber NFL QB but his productivity in 2019 Pre-season shows he knows how to protect the ball and can make TD throws when he is in the Red Zone. Keeping Boyle over Kizer was an easy decision.

Not so sure about Boyle. Saw not much what makes me believe he can play in the NFL someday….. And I have no idea where he looked like a trusty veteran. We must have total different ideas about trusty veterans as well.

And of course nobody knows witch QB (if one at all) has the confidence of the locker room. Dont know how anybody can state that as a fact or something????

I think Manny Wilkins looks like he has "it" more than Boyle or Kizer. He has that charismatic moxie that says "I NEVER get rattled," which all great QBs have. Boyle flashes that, Kizer has RARELY flashed that, but Wilkins has it ALL THE TIME. He's the guy I want thrown in during an emergency or leading my team through a season. That said, I think you want someone who has some experience behind your starting QB, so I'd take Boyle and Wilkins.

Give the job to Boyle and quickly replace him as soon as possible. Kizer failed the Browns. He's now failed the Packers. His "all" isn't good enough. He's mentally damaged. His childhood heart was with the Browns. They broke it. The disconnect is there. It takes heart to be a leader. He just hasn't shown it. A knife thrower can throw blindfolded. A good QB can make any throw. Kizer can't throw the same ball twice. We've seen what he can do. Move on.

Kizer is younger than Boyle. What he did at the Browns is old. He is just about serviceable. If we can get value in a trade, I’m all for it (was coming next year anyway), but running with Boyle is not going to cut it this year.

There is a reason why, given the general view that neither QB is a season winner, that Kizer is the possible trade candy for a team looking for someone to play now. Cory’s canard about draft is old. Kizer has enough dirty water in Cleveland that that isn’t the reason. They both have enough film.

The Packers couldn’t even trade for a water boy for the guy. Wake up and smell the roses. He stunk with Cleveland, he stunk with the Packers ... cant wait to see what other team follows your Kizer hype and “takes a flyer” and gives up a roster spot for him! Boyle beat the guy in EVERY stat and deserved the roster spot plain and simple. I’m only to glad I wont have to read your Kizer dribble anymore!!! But don’t feel too bad ... Kizer will be sitting on a beach somewhere drinking pina coladas with the millions that he received for his inadequate football endeavors!!

Hey everyone new to the site long time Packer Fan. Let me post a thought of mine. What does everyone think of keeping Manny and cutting ties with Boyle and Kizer and then pick up a cut veteran and sending Manny to PS. How many years do you want to hang onto these guys do you ever think that either one with be the future QB of the Packers. I think ARhas set the bar so high that its going to be difficult of anyone matching it.

PF357,
Welcome to the site! You’ll love it.
The problem with your scenario is that we will have a QB2 with 0 knowledge or experience in the system. What if QB1 gets dinged early in the season (like last year). I would hate to see us cut ties with both Kizer & Boyle simultaneously.

I don’t really know if Wilkins has nothing or if he just hasn’t been given a chance to show. In games he has had little opportunity, no protection and played with the least favored players with few opportunities to pass.

He remains a mystery to me beyond his athleticism and tendency to scramble, which I expected given his past.

Wilkins cannot play yet in the NFL. He just doesn't have the experience. Therefore, he should not be QB2, imo.

If GB keeps Kizer, Boyle should be on the PS, and I can't see keeping two QBs on the PS, so I would cut ties with Wilkins.

If GB dumps Kizer in favor of Boyle, or Boyle gets claimed, then I am fine with Wilkins going on the PS.

If GB signs a QB from another team (or trades for a QB), then GB should try to sneak Boyle onto the PS and parts way with Wilkins and Kizer.

I like the idea of keeping 3 QBs, but can't advocate for it this year.

Everyone is in agreement if AR goes down the season goes down the drain. It really doesn't matter who the back up QB is unless it's for a short period of time, 3 or 4 games maybe. Can the team win a game or two? The only real chance is a defense that can win close games like Denver or the Ravens of past, we don't have that. This team is still built around Aaron Rodgers and he will determine where it goes the next few years. ML is lucky to have a veteran QB that can run a new system without missing a beat. This is going to be fun people, sit back and enjoy the ride. The best place for the back up QB is holding a clip board or mop up duty, which will be Boyle.

Exactly right. If you remember the first Bears game last year, Kizer was amazingly bad, and I see no progression or improvement from last year.

If either of these guys has to play some real minutes to win a game, the TV network should play the sound of a toilet flushing when Kizer or Boyle first comes on the field. Then it becomes a question of which guy isn't going to screw it up with dumb mistakes, so the defense might get lucky and help win it.

Let's face it, neither Boyle or Kizer are very good options for your #2. I would keep Kizer, cut Boyle and hope to sign him to the PS, I doubt another team picks him up for their 53 and he would be stupid not to want to stay in the Packer system. Then, shop the waiver wires, if a halfway decent Vet QB is available, sign him and dump Kizer when that QB is ready.

Tired of having a #2 QB that you can't fully rely on and with Rodgers getting older, that could be something we see more and more.

Wilkins to the practice squad. I think they were hiding him on purpose. I would keep Kizar and release Boyle. I think Kaiser might do well in a system where he doesn’t have to think much. He just needs another year to get the system down. He certainly can throw a pretty ball and run well and just needs a little more practice to get on the same page Now that the receivers will be set. That just takes time and experience. He looks a little jittery when going through the progressions, but I think with time he’ll settle down. Some people say he’s had plenty of time to do that, but he still very young. I say we give it one more year.

I dont understand this Boyle obsession. He had a couple nice flashes against 3s and 4s...started with the 2s and just disappeared then showed up again when the 3s came back in. He has shown nothing that leads me to believe he'd be any better with the 1s. He is way too inconsistent. If I'm going with inconsistent I'm sticking with the kid that has actual game experience.

Too many here allow personal bias and emotion cloud their view when the tape shows neither Kizer or Boyle have really won the job. They are both wildly inconsistent. Kizer hasn't done enough to really separate himself and Boyle hasn't done anything to surpass him.

The Dolphins basically have all players except Laremy Tunsil on the block - go trade for Rosen and let him develop behind ARod

Boyle has a good looking throwing action. If you just watch the plays where it works, he looks stellar. It is not unless you look at what he doesn’t do and the periods where he is completely lost that one realizes that he is raw material but limited in what he does and in consistency at this point. Still a work in progress. He may be 2 years away from having the toolset, if he fulfills his potential.

Boyle has less experience but at least he looks like he has the ability to think on his feet. Kiser doesn’t trust his eyes which causes hesitation which leads to interceptions.

Again, only looking at the good. Neither is going to win enough games to save a season like last year.

The best we can expect is not to lose them. To do that need to utilize all the progressions and play consistently. Boyle does neither. He has had two quarters of nothing but inaccuracy. No team starts that willingly. Moreover, his limited use of the route tree, throw types and touch even in preseason is going to get figured out fast by both starting players and coaches watching film and preparing.

He is just not ready: doesn’t mean his potential has vanished. Forcing him this year might be the worst thing we could do for him.

My assessment of the backup QB competition resulted in the same conclusion. Boyle wins the backup position. Kizer is cut. Wilkins to PS, or some other newly released QB to PS.

My reasons are

- Neither are good enough
- Neither really displayed moments of "Wow this guy might make it" for me
- When the offense moved the ball with Kizer at QB, it seemed like it was more due to unforced mistakes by defensive scrubs (Penalties or missed defensive assignments that left someone wide open)
- In the Oakland game, Boyle made some good throws to covered WRs. This is the game that got Boyle the job in my book. He threw WRs open or allowed the WR to make a play.

If you read through the comments, you can tell it's a coin flip between the two, because neither is good enough. Thus, in my opinion, the decision is more of a guess on which guy will figure it out and be decent next year, because neither guy is going to win any games this season except against the worst of the worst.

Ideally, Gute can pull rabbit out of the hat, and get an upgrade via trade or the scrap heap of players getting released.

Kizer lack pocket presence. He panics when his first read is covered.

Boyle at least stands tall and lets receivers develop the play as he goes through his reads.

Unfortunately pocket presence and poise under pressure is not practiced due to no live tackling so the fact Boyle has it and Kizer does not is a big knock on him.

Boyle does wait, but he doesn’t yet progress much. Kizer does. I’m not sure I agree. Boyle looks more assertive but only uses a limited range of options, doesn’t have all the throw types and, if pressured or covered, has no out.

That’s not to say Kizer is perfect, but he is decisive, does lead receivers and will throw away. While it’s. It a great compliment, he will manage a game better. That is important.

Sorry to nitpick, but shouldn't the author wait until he sees some evidence in the regular season that "the defense has transformed into a ball-hawking unit?" I don't think Boyle looked like a "trusty veteran," either; rather, more of a question mark with better upside than Kizer. At this point, I still think the Packers have a very tough time winning games without Rodgers. Hopefully we won't find out.

I know we are low on cap space, but wouldn't Hoyer be a great "get"? Boyle is not a real development prospect anyway, Hoyer Not too much $$, real experience...

Hey chill out the QB position is not settled many more moves yet to come ...look for a Vet to be brought in for a look see.. Boyle could go to PS ... Hoyer , Lynch ?? at RB think McCoy should get a close look ...good veteran leadership.. think Cowboys might grab him ??

I give Gute big points here. He gave up a starting defensive back (and now Pro Bowler) for Kizer. He admits his mistake and moves on for the best of the team. Go Pack!
