Cory's Corner: The Packers Grew Up On Sunday
A "meaningless" Week 16 win couldn't have been more meaningful.
I questioned Aaron Rodgers’ heart, desire and leadership this season.
The entire season has gone sideways and Rodgers has been quick to sidestep answers rather than face them head on.
However, on Sunday, his play did all the talking. He looked confident in the pocket, he was tossing darts and it appeared like he was ready to throw down with a defensive tackle who gave a cheap shot to his right tackle Bryan Bulaga.
And it also showed up in the box score. Rodgers completed 67 percent of his passes for 442 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 32 yards and two more scores in addition to racking up a two-point conversion.
“I don't want to look back in 20 years and wonder, ‘What if I had played that game?’” Rodgers said. ‘Could something special have happened? What would it look like to my teammates if they knew I kind of quit on them?’ I hope my teammates know I'm never going to quit on them. “I'm going to battle through anything I've got, and they did the same.”
Rodgers is a very intelligent and introspective person, yet this is arguably his most powerful quote of his career. Remember, Rodgers has noted how it has been hard to relate to the youngsters because he’s the 35-year-old trying to relate to the YouTube generation. Oh, and there’s also the fact that Rodgers is getting $66.9 million in cash this year. That’s not easy for the locker room to relate to.
But that quote was Rodgers extending an olive branch to the rest of the team. The Packers have fired head coach Mike McCarthy, fired their associate head coach Winston Moss, will soon fire special teams coordinator Ron Zook and many players have been left wondering what the direction of the team is. And that’s where Rodgers comes in. It obviously helped that he had a phenomenal game. But what really stood out to me was how Rodgers threw the ball to nine different receivers — with six of them being first-year Packers.
Sure, the 44-38 overtime win over the lowly Jets is going to be remembered as a footnote in the 2018 season. But the Packers grew up on Sunday. And yes, we were all waiting for that magical moment the entire season but it finally came in the form of an early Christmas present — the first road win of the year.
“It's good for the young guys to see what the locker room on the road feels like with a win, what the plane flight feels like," Rodgers said. “How special that plane ride is after a road victory.”
The Packers are still only 6-8-1 and they still have an abundance of holes that need to be filled if they want to make a run at next year’s Super Bowl. A smattering of players talked about pride after the game. That says a lot because this season is lost. You learn more about people when times are bad, because it shows real character.
After a season of craziness, the Packers displayed their true stripes on Sunday.

When I saw Rodgers running over to "Have Bulagas Back", I thought well this is interesting AND different.
That was something we may have saw a guy like Brett Favre do but I didn't think that type of behavior was in Rodgers. Clearly I was wrong...And I loved it!!
Now it's not something that I want to see time and again out of Rodgers but it's sure in the hell nice to know he DOES have it in him.

Rodgers really stuck his nose into tackles on his late scramble/runs. He's always done a great job of giving him himself by sliding up on runs to avoid extra hits. Of course that means sacrificing a few yards on those runs.
Not last Sunday. That run to the one yard line in particular, he could have ducked OOB at around the 5 and saved himself a hit. But he wanted the end zone or as close as he could get. That is something his teammates no doubt noticed. It's on film so it can be shown to his new teammates next year. It won't matter that it was against the lowly Jets. Those were still NFL football players looking to hit him. And he didn't back down.
Those kinds of moments have long-term meaning even if the game was "meaningless"

Never said it was meaningless, as a fan I’m always rooting for them to win, loved the game, even though I really don’t think Rodgers should of played as much as he did, I’d of been ok with a hard fought loss in overtime. But I tend to think big picture, that’s past and present. Anybody that thought Rodgers wasn’t competitive, and didn’t have that in him any more( including future coaches) we don’t want anyway. His problem was between the ears this year. No where else. It’s just a difference of opinion, your need to rub it in( as if anything changed) is childish and short sided.

Another thing that's childish is being defensive when you're not under attack. No one said you said the game was meaningless. However it's generally understood that the Packers are out of the playoffs and that wins drop our draft stock. It also took the Packers until the 4th quarter to wake up and a lot of help from refs to win.

Um obviously Hank was taking a shot at all those who wanted Rodgers to sit during the week. If you read the comments earlier in the week this would be clear. But thanks for apparently no reason taking a shot at me even though you had no idea what I was talking about. :). Another case of reactionary short sidedness

Rodgers and the young receivers getting in the same page consistently bodes well for next season. Another training camp should further solidify the the pass attack. For a meaningless game, the takeaway is the needle is pointing up. Win or lose against the Lions, another strong showing by the offense would be perfect.

Get agitated all year about the WR's not knowing how to circle back or drop their routes when Rodgers is scrambling. Like give me an F'ing break? Seriously? These are talented professional players who have played the game their whole life being coached by professional coaches, and they watch hours of game film each week. We are 16 weeks into the season after a full training camp, pre-season, etc.
No more excuses!

Merry Christmas Packer fans. I didn't get to watch this week's game but got to listen to the end while on the road so I didn't get to see all the action live. One thing I liked was that Kumerow got involved and finally got his first TD. Along with two other rookie WRs and Tonyan all getting involved I reallly like our WRs going forward. With G-Mo coming back healthy next year we have a deep base to work with.
STs is obviously our sore spot this year and new blood at the top should help that out. One thing I would do if I were Gute would be to target the best return guy in draft and make that it's own priority position no less than punter or kicker. No one we have can seem to hold onto the football or really scare anyone. Time that changed. And I don't care if that's the only thing the guy can do, just do it extremely well.
One more game to watch this year and since I am working in northern MI, I should be able to watch because it's against the Lions. If AR and company can put together another great game then they will have a lot to work off of next year. If not, I'm not sure what to expect next year. So I'm hoping AR throws for 4 TDs this week and Williams grabs a couple more on the ground. Until then, Merry Christmas everyone!

I'd like to see this team find its own Tyreek Hill/Tarik Cohen type athlete. A guy who can play just about any skill position and is a danger to go to the house any time he touches the ball. Those guys are often returners, too.

There are a lot off folks around here with stupid grudges. I could name names. They think it's not known who they are because chztv doesn't say, but it's easy to figure out the patterns when there is a new a comment and a spray of downvotes.

Aaron Rodgers was in damage control. They just came off a loss to the bears. They were Hungry! Aaron Rodgers sucked this whole year. Sooo many things went wrong. The play on the field was don't give up. He ended the whispers of drafting a QB. I don't believe things are all that rosy in Green Bay after this win. This year was a Ponzi scheme. But for now the players can party and enjoy Christmas. Life is good when you win.

Why does this end the drafting a qb whispers? How many good years does Rodgers have left? Are Kiser or Boyle the future? If the right QB falls to them in the draft and is BPA why wouldn't Gute draft him? Rodgers had 1 decent quarter as a rushing QB. He still had plenty of missed throws, opportunities, and took needless sacks. What he didn't do was throw the ball away 10 times which was refreshing.

I've seen people say that holding the draft before FA would allow teams to build their teams better. I understand that point of view but I disagree. You want to sit down in the draft room without the thought in your head that there is a hole that must be filled. The draft is such a crapshoot you never want to be thinking of anything but BPA for every pick.
I hope they use their cap space to shore up OL, TE and pass defense (rush and DBs). That way, if they find themselves on the clock with a QB atop their board of available players, there is less temptation to pass him up for a similarly rated player at a position of greater need.

My argument would be that you'd have more latitude to select BPA if you did your draft prior to FA because there would be more holes to fill and more likely draft options that meaningfully fit. It seems to me that FA ahead of the draft points more strongly to those needs you didn't fill by signing players and might force you to select on need more than you would otherwise. Knowing that you still have FA (where you have more control over who you pursue to fill needs) could liberate teams to select those better players.

And there is that good argument for holding the draft before vet FA. It does make a lot of sense to me. It's 55/45 (ish) call for me.

I totally understand the BPA philiosophy in drafting, but I’ve never thought any team truly holds to it. Draft prospects’ grades are often in “clusters” or “buckets”. (Remark about many Packer drafts of the 80’s being “clusters” withheld)
If a team REALLY did BPA, how come no team ever comes away with like 7 linebackers? I’d love to see a GM after that one: “Well, when our turn came up, we always took the top name on our board. And danged if it wasn’t always a linebacker. Hey, by the way, is Piggly Wiggly hiring? I’m going to be needing a new job soon.”

Good years = his contract. Kizer and Boyle won't be the future.( Traded again. ) Kiser is Scott Hunter? QB drops.- Not this year unless it's a steal. The holes need fixing in the first. Next year for sure. The evaluation of Rodgers is correct. But to much money has been invested. The biggest question is can they fix the FS safety position. They can't put a speed guy there who can't think/Tackle. The biggest thing I hate about the packers drafts: 1. The players good because he fills a need. 2. We over rate our draft picks. 3. Not going after the top rated players,( by position), in a deep draft. { If a position is the best in years. Draft that position more than once. } The best teams know how to stock pile a position !

I agree with Dobber. Holding the draft after FA does mean that having a disciplined GM is more important (and one who has job security - GMs are people and sometimes reach because they know their job is on the line). To a certain extent, if I am not crazy, having the draft before FA would promote parity.

This game was a feel good win in an awful season. That is the only meaning. Oh, except for the fact that the wins against the Falcons and Jets have dropped the Packers 10 spots in the draft making the rebuild that much harder. Merry Christmas to the fans. On the positive side, Guter probably would have traded back anyway.

Fortunately, the off season is long and allows for going a long way. For example, from Feb-Sept last year, lots of people around these parts wrote with admiration of our neighbors to the west. The Vikings were a benchmark to be envied and emulated. Now, those Vikings are facing counting on an upset (either they beat Bears or Redskins beat Philly) just to grab the final playoff berth. They are no longer written about in such glowing terms.
So the off season envy for the coming months will shift to those Bears. Who were 5-11 in 2017 and got a lot of good fortune in 2018.
Here's the thing: In 2019, the Packers will still have Aaron Rodgers, the Bears will still have Mitch Trubisky and the Vikings will still have Kirk Cousins. Despite his down year, that puts the Packers a leg up on the other 2 at the game's most important position.

If both Minnesota and Philly lose, the Vikes still get in at 8-7-1 (over Philly's and Washington's 8-8). That botched sack call early in the year still might save Minny's ass.
Minnesota has not beaten a team with a winning record all season. It's not often that I find myself rooting for the Bears, but I'd really like to see them pound the Vikes this week and Philly (who should beat the 'Skins) sneak into the playoffs.
IN EDIT: maybe better...the Vikes lose but still get in, win a WC round game and THEN get humiliated by the Saints so that they go out on a sour note AND lose 3-4 slots of draft position.

Grow up? The league needs to grow up. The ridiculous rules cost the Pack early. Not until an outcry from EVERYONE did they ease up on the QB hits. The QB's around the league were actually embarrassed from comments. Put a skirt on em, don't touch em, don't look at em!

First off, Merry Christmas my fellow Cheeseheads!
I'm a believer that to carry momentum from one season to the next, we will need continuity in a coach -- which we will not have in 2019.
However, with the right coach, we've seen rapid turnarounds with the Rams, Bears, Eagles, etc.
For example, we beat a 6-10 Arizona Cardinals team at the end of the 1999 season (Which Aaron Nagler compares to our present day team). We finished 8-8 and Ray Rhodes was fired.
Then we went 9-7* in 2000** under Mike Sherman. We only had one Pro Bowler in 2000 (Darren Sharper), and things seemed bleak.
*= the catch is we won 5 of our last 6 games in 2000. That carried over to 2001, where we went 12-4.
**= the second catch is that the 2000 draft featured future mainstays like Bubba Franks, Chad Clifton, Mark Tauscher, KGB and Nai'l Diggs.
In other words, the coaching decision and draft will determine if we keep missing the playoffs or not.

Montravius Adams grew up, as did Lancaster, Tony Brown, St. Brown, MVS and Kumerow.
Special Teams is more of a 5 year old............we have be the worst special teams unit in the league this year. There is no way Zook has a job next year.

First let me say to everyone at CheeseheadTV, and all of you that post, Merry Christmas. I enjoy this blog quite a bit. Now, as for the game against the Jets, it was great to get the win. Now its time to beat the Lions. Next year will depend on how much these players continue to grow, who we keep in free agency, and get in free agency, and how we do in the draft. The new coaches coming in will figure into all of that. The pluses for next year? Fewer funky timed games with national audiences, a third or fourth place schedule, and a sense of urgency from AR...maybe he will step up and finally be that guy that leads the team forward.....we can only hope.. Go PACK!

Possibly there was some leadership shown by AR. Possibly it was helpful to the team - a bit. But nobody is going to start next year by saying - remember the game against that Jets.
So we saw:
Our defense, down many players, made the Jets look good. Nothing learned.
Our special teams is as bad or worse than we thought. Nothing gained.
Our offense could actually score - at least against a bad team. So why didn't we beat Arizona?
It's really hard to imagine that management wanted AR to play this game. Certainly not the full game. So we also saw that AR might actually be calling the shots. Not good for the incoming coach to see. Did AR grow up? I did see some more short throws (I think) but when we had the 3rd and 1 at end of 3rd period and AR could have easily run to pick it up but just held it forever looking down field... is that growing up?

Nothing learned? I learned that Pettine can't always make chicken salad of chicken stuff. I learned that the rumors of Aaron Rodgers' demise are greatly exaggerated. I learned that Jamal Williams can be very productive. I learned that even when Aaron Rodgers is on fire, Jimmy Graham is going to produce 3-4 catches and about 40 yards. I learned there are many guys on the team that still have some pride and a little fight in their belly.
All of that is valuable info for forming the 2019 version of the Packers in the coming months.
Mrs Scorpio loves "The Santa Clause" series of movies. I got the pleasure of watching them several times over the holiday season. One particular line comes to mind. "Seeing isn't believing. Believing is seeing." Since you believe these games have no meaning, that is what you see...no meaning. Since I believe there is meaning in each of the 16 games every team is guaranteed, I see meaning. Maybe you're right and I'm wrong. Maybe not.

Frankly Samson, I think you're insulting to those that come here daily, stating your opinion like it's a proven fact and calling anyone that disagrees with your opinion naive.
I think its insulting to the Packers players and coaches that take pride in doing their jobs to the best of their abilities, giving 100%, risking injury and fighting for jobs next year to help support their families,
I think it's insulting to Davante Adams who played a great game, putting some team records in reach in order to have his name go into the record books for all time.
I think it's insulting to potential head coaching candidates and free agent players that want to be involved with a team that has some talented reserves and veterans who will play with heart and show that they're not a bunch of quitters.
So a handful of people here are happier to see the Packers lose than they are to see them win. Deep down they're probably hoping Rodgers gets injured and that the Packers draft picks fail just so the can validate their opinion that some games are "meaningless".
I'm not going to stoop to the level of calling them names like you do just because I don't agree with them/you. But after having watched almost every Packers game since the 1950s, let's just say that watching them win is a lot more meaningful to me as a fan and shareholder than it is to watch them lose.

What I learned is just how much power the Refs have over an NFL game. We lost 3-7 games in 2018 due to bad calls from the refs going to against the Packers. It all started with the CM3 roughing the passer call and spiraled from there. Now we are finally on the other side and the Jets received penalty after penalty. Unfortunately this win only serves to lower the Packer's draft stock so even when the refs help the Packers it feels like a punishment lol.

Saying the Packers "grew up" against the jets is a little melodramatic . I admit I haven't seen any other Jets games, but with their record, I'll bet a fair number of teams "grew Up" against the Jets .

Part of me wanted him to sit but being that this was going to be my first NFL game ever attending living in New Jersey it's rare Packers play here. A rod put on an show and I was front and center on the side all the points where scored on Greatest Christmas Gift ever I appreciate that game from the goat and showed me what I've felt all along the young talent is there just need the right coach to pull it together.....Go Pack Go

Glad you had a blast at your 1st game. Seeing Rodgers on fire is unreal the guy seems inhuman when they heard click. ESB has made some unreal catches this year as well.

I was going to go to the game but I had a family scheduling conflict. If the Packers were still in it, I might have been able to justify going. So I had many mixed feelings about the win. Of course, it seems like it would have been a great game to go to. So good for you and the fans.
But it comes down to short term vs long term gain.
