Cory's Corner: Offense Cannot Find Footing

Cory Jennerjohn examines why the offense has stalled through two games.

The Packers are unbeaten, yet the Packers aren't a complete team. And the grumbling starts on the offensive side of the ball.

Which means the buck starts and stops with Aaron Rodgers, but it isn't all his fault.

"Time is always the save-all," said Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. "The more time they can be with Aaron. The more that Aaron can get comfortable with every guy on the field is so critical."

So what's Hackett talking about? Well, Rodgers didn't play a snap during the preseason and now that the offense has only played one-and-a-half good quarters, that comment seems interesting.

Does Rodgers still hold on to the ball too long? Sure. However, this season, the protection hasn't been as good either. With Aaron Jones breaking through with a career-high 23 carries last week, one would think that Rodgers and the passing game wouldn't be too far behind.

However, this team is only converting 26 percent of its third downs. Another interesting aspect is ball distribution. Not surprisingly, Davante Adams has 27 percent of the team's targets, followed by Marquez Valdes-Scantling's 17 percent. The next wide receiver is Geronimo Allison with 6 percent of Green Bay's targets. Just going by the targets, Jones is the de facto No. 3 receiver.

"You always go in with a plan to spread the ball as much as possible," said Hackett.
That's fine, but the Packers have to push the ball down the field. In two games, the Packers have only tallied five pass plays of 20 yards or more. Remember, this is the Packers. This is Aaron Rodgers. This is Davante Adams. People don't expect Rodgers to throw a buffet of bubble screens and short passes.

It also must be noted that this wide receiving corps isn't as decorated as what Rodgers has had in the past. This is Valdes-Scantling's sophomore season and Allison only logged 30 games played entering this year. I would argue that this unit is going to need more time to figure each other out.

"It's awesome to watch his demand of those guys," said Hackett. "And everything has to be perfect. And I think that's what's so awesome to see."

Rodgers' expectations may have gone skyward with the 2-0 record. But how long do we have to wait until everyone on that receiving unit is exactly where they need to be?

Because how long can the defense keep bailing out this offense? That's actually hard to write. When was the last time that happened in Green Bay?

How Long? As long as it takes! Rodgers is in control. I see no panic. He's playing Cautious. Can't blame Rodgers for the screw ups. The Offensive Line never was ready. The emphasis was on defense. And it's the reason were 2-0. Rodger's is throwing the ball well. He's doing whats right for the future. But are the Toys he has, right for the future? That question can't be answered until we see the OL do their job right.

Aaron is throwing a lot of balls at the receiver's feet, or behind them. He isn't throwing the ball well at all.

There were some missed throws against the Bears. I think that was just rust. He was dropping dimes against the Vikings. His ball placement was stellar. Were it not for a few outstanding defensive plays by the Vikes and a couple of drops that should have been caught, a bad snap and a critical drive killing fumble by Allison you were looking at a potential 300+ yard game and maybe another TD or 2.

This should be interesting with Jenkins starting. I'm curious to see if line play shows noticeable improvement with Jenkins replacing Taylor.

UPDATE: According to APC, Taylor is now on IR. Adam Pankey was signed off the Titans' PS to the Packers' active roster.

I like to see the bubble screens and short passes. It helps a quarterback find a rhythm and draws the secondary up a bit and opens up some long stuff. Basic west coast principles which don't seem to exist as much anymore. Rodgers needs to release the ball quicker, not hold it longer and short passes helps with that.

Cory.....dude...chill ax man,
The Packers are 2 & 0 against two division rivals with two top defenses.
This is a brand new offense, so brand new that Rodgers has to wear a wrist band with plays on it.
Most of us knew this wasn’t going to be the greatest show on tundra overnight and that the Defense would have to shoulder the load early on.
The Packers offense:
Veteran offensive line
Star QB
Star WR
Excellent RB’s
If by game six or so things still aren’t clicking on offense ok then it’s time to wonder what is going on with #12, but right now lets just ride the 2 & 0 gravy train man.
Enjoy the ride baby!
Go Pack!

To me it's a bit of a surprise how much pressure the o-line is giving up. Also a bit of a surprise we still don't have a TE getting involved (most likely due to the defenses we've faced). With 2 weeks of game film to study the adjustments should start to show up on the field. AR doesn't throw ints and lives to play another down. We will see improvement every week on offense, it just may take a few more weeks. Meanwhile opposing teams are studying our defense and will find ways to attack it, so the offense has to improve for more balance.

It would help if we had a TE that could get open occasionally. It is only two games into the season, but I have seen nothing different from Graham this year than from his mediocre last year. MLF's offense needs a good TE and it is looking more and more like Graham is not it. I have never been on the Tonyan bandwagon, but maybe it is time to try him.

It would help if they actually played a TE that could. Graham isn't really a TE. He's an oversized WR who has lost the speed and quickness that made him successful.

Graham had more yards than Trey Burton last year and was ranked 10th among all TEs. All while he was injured. At some point he will start clicking. Look at how old Witten is or Greg Olson. Jimmy Graham will produce...I’m thinking 6-7 TDS this year...he already has 1.

Most thought that it would take longer for the offense to gel than the D this year. I see progress and it should continue. Against the Bears we had 1.5 good drives and it was enough. Against the Vikings we had 1.5 quarters worth of good offense and some key first downs down the stretch and it was enough.

I’m betting we see a better offensive result against the Broncos and it will be more than enough...like maybe we will carry the success all the way into the third quarter without turnovers. When we get a full game of offensive game planning like the first quarter of the Vikings game, watch out. Then add a few studs next year and DYNASTY!

People need to remember that in both games this year so far Rodgers was playing with a lead. In that situation the offense is trying to use up the clock as much as possible, it's called clock management. So waiting until the last second to hike the ball and holding onto it is using up valuable seconds off the clock. We didn't see that against the Vikings until they had a decent lead.

The offense will get better as the year goes on. They made the first step to help that happen this week by starting Jenkins. I think we'll see marked improvement on the OL from now on.

So getting a lead and taking the foot off the gas and allowing/abetting the opponent to catch up or surpass is still a practiced/accepted mantra in GB.
You don't start running the clock out until the late 4th quarter and only then if you have the ability to actually do so...and enough of a lead to warrant it which doesn't put stress on your defense.
Have we learned nothing from the recent past and MM.

If I recall correctly, as the teams came back on the field after halftime, a sports reporter interviewed both coaches. The quote of Matt LaF was, “We need to keep our foot on the gas.” What we saw in the 2nd half was not the Packers letting up. It was errors derailing scoring drives. Fumbles, penalties, and dropped passes gave the appearance of slowing down.

Agree about not taking your foot off the gas. Ever. But you begin running the clock out as soon as you're ahead. That's where having a respectable run game comes in and a big part of why it's so important, along with keeping your QB clean and upright. You don't want to leave your opponent time - especially with some of the super high scoring offenses like the Chiefs who can strike at any time from any point on the field.

First, everything on offense begins with the OL and the Packers OL
has been shaky at best in pass protection so far. Next consider that we have faced 2 of the better defenses in the league so far and since they are division rivals they know Rodgers extremely well.

Third this is a new offense so everyone including Rodgers is still learning their way. Beyond this we need to consider that after Adams are WRs are just not that good. I won’t give up on them at this point, it’s still too early. But they are later round picks. As for our TEs the Packers promoted Baylis from the PS this week which may mean that Graham is either injured or a move is coming up for him. In any case this team needs a TE to emerge in a big way and I doubt if it is Graham.

Playing an unfamiliar opponent like the Broncos this week might give the offense a better chance to get in sync and open up as we’ve been expecting. For sure this offense needs to be better by the time we play the Eagles and Cowboys. Thanks, Since ‘61

How long will you and the rest of the blind crowd here keep spouting the same nonsense and continue denying what's right in front of your eyes... there are no receivers on this team that can get open aside from Adams. That's the issue!... the core issue! It's why Rodgers holds the ball, why the OL looks weak because they have to sustain blocks forever, why there's no short passing game... it's because Allison and MVS take a week to get open. But keep spouting the same mantra... new offense, no preseason snaps, played two of the toughest defenses... and refuse to admit what's right in front of your eyes or that Gute, who brilliantly improved the D, made a fatal error in not drafting one of the stud receivers, many of whom are already tearing up the league. I ask for the tenth time, is there anyone here who still believes that Gary was a better pick than Hollywood Brown? Brown is killing it with only two games played with his QB. How many has Allison played with Rodgers? Years of practice? All your excuses are nonsense. It's the players stupid!! Until LaFleur is finally forced to replace Allison, and likely MVS, this offense will continue to struggle. Hopefully, the changes are made before Rodgers gets hurt because he has to hold the ball waiting for the gold dust twins, Allison and MVS, to get more than a foot of separation from a defender. Keep those dislikes coming... and don't forget to comment that Rodgers holds the ball too long, the OL is weak, there weren't enough preseason snaps, new offense... yada yada yada.

If you have ever paid attention to my previous posts over the last several seasons you know that I have consistently posted that the WRs after Adams are not very good including in the post that you just replied to. However, we have had numerous receivers over the years including Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams who took a few seasons (2-3) to develop so yes I am still willing to give MVS and Allison a chance, besides what choice do we have?

I am not making excuses I am just pointing out the struggles with our offense are due to a combinations of factors. However, I don’t need to say that someone is stupid or nonsensical to make my points. Your post is a prime example of the acrimony which has been building on this site for a while now and is unfortunate and unnecessary.

Those of us who have been here a long time (10 years for me back to Jersey Al’s ALLGBP) don’t come here to be insulted or lectured at. We come for decent discussion of our thoughts on the Packers.

I understand that you need to vent your frustrations but try to remember what happens with the Packers is not the fault of those who post here. We’re just commenting and trying to enjoy our shared Packers fan hood. We are not the enemy and we’re not stupid and we’re not making excuses. Yada, yada, yada. Thanks, Since ‘61

Dont know what you talking about Logan, but its clear you never played any kind of sport in you life. Maybe you can watch some golf in the future. It should be slow enought......
WRs are top 10 and better than needed. Protection not so bad either. But I know I waste my time. And you can bet, if its the WRs fault, AR would complain all the time.

Nothing that you said here is true and the fact you don't know what I'm talking about explains it. WRs are top 10?... Production not so bad?... Allison wasn't even thrown to in game 1. You mean that production. AR isn't going to complain and rock the boat with a new coach and a relatively new GM. I hope that Allison and MVS explode and become "top ten" but I'll believe it when it happens. And, btw, I've played and coached plenty. Kind of a ridiculous thing to say about someone you've no clue about.

KC, NE, PHI, LAR, HOU, MN, NO, CLE, TB, ATL all have much a much better WR group than GB. That's 10 just off the top of my head. I appreciate the enthusiasm but you're not being realistic at all. Just because someone is wearing a Packers uniform doesn't make them top 10. Neither talent level or production back up your top 10 claim. It's not even close.

I won't get into a back and forth with you, we obviously disagree, but your reference to me calling you or anyone stupid is misguided. My saying "It's the players stupid" was a takeoff on the Clinton campaign's mantra, coined by James Carville, "It's the economy stupid." Again, I wasn't calling you or anyone here stupid, so I'm sorry if the reference was too obscure. Now I did say nonsense, which is what I believe in all this continuous recounting of the reasons the offense is bad... no preseason snaps, new scheme, Rodgers holding the ball... with virtually no one willing to admit that the receivers are bad and that Gute made a mistake by drafting Gary and not a receiver. But that's just my opinion, and I don't think that stating a differing opinion is what is causing this forum to implode, it's the reactions to my differing opinion. Reminds me very much of the years when anyone criticizing Capers was routinely reminded that he was a defensive genius... until he wasn't. As I've said more than once, I hope Allison and MVS do well, I just don't see much evidence that they are very good. Hope I'm wrong.

So you would replace pass rush with a skinny but fast WR like Hollywood. The Board didn't lay out that way for a number of teams. There was more talent at the WR spot in 2018's draft, but again Jaire still transcends them. 2019's draft had the value in the second round. They were selected before Gutekunst got to Jenkins. With Taylor out who would you rather have at the LG spot Sunday, Jenkins or Patrick/McCray? The miss was on J'mon Moore with the four pick. I would like to see more reps going to Shepherd and Lazard if the other two remain in static mode.
Equan was probably going to contribute.

The round a guy is picked in doesn't matter once you're in the league. Earlier picks may have more talent, OR they might just be more NFL ready. After all, Antonio Brown was a 6th round pick and he was one of the most prolific WRs. It took Jordy about 3 seasons to develop and he was a 2nd rounder. Give MVS a little time. You don't need your 2nd and 3rd WRs to be high draft picks for an offense to click. The certainly need to improve, but they also played two of the best defenses in the league the first two weeks, while playing together for the first time other than practice.

Lots of questions and few answers. Fortunately the D is stout. Everyone is saying it takes 4-6 weeks or more to become comfortable with a new O. I’m hoping the Pack are fast learners. I’m also not worried about the WRs. They’ll produce. Last week’s 1st quarter was a snap shot of things to come!
I’ll be honest with you all, I feel as if I’m in a dream. I never anticipated the Pack being 2-0 with a strong opportunity to push it to 3-0. They have definitely caught the NFL off guard as they climb the power rankings. After this week, how many of the 9 teams will still be in the coveted Undefeated Group? My guess: 6 with Buf, Bal, & LAR falling from the class. (My hot take is Cle defeating the Rams.)

Bo,

You realize the only time we moved the ball last week was when Adams was involved. That is the point. When a good D doubles Adams, who do we have to step up? No one at this point.

All the other WR's are 5th, 6th rounders, and UDFA's. Not a recipe for success at WR in the NFL. I have said it before and I will keep saying it. This will bite us in the butt until we draft a top WR that can be a #2 next to Adams.

The season is not very long, and every game counts. I get where Cory is coming from. The Packers offense did create more points in the second game than the first. You could chalk that up to the different defenses the Packers played against. Are the Packers getting better on offense? I am sorry, but I am not convinced. During the game against the Vikings, the Packers had to call a timeout because they were not ready for the next play. The very next play, the Packers can't get the ball to the QB from the line of scrimmage.

I love the Packers, and I am a big fan. At this point, I just hope they reduce the errors and sloppy play. At that point, they should get better. A 2-0 start should tell the Packers that they have two less games to get it right.

"It's awesome to watch his demand of those guys," said Hackett. "And everything has to be perfect. And I think that's what's so awesome to see."

The level of perfection that Rodgers may be demanding/looking for hasn't been seen since 2011 and now may be a figment of 'his' imagination. It sounds as though Rodgers is attempting to mold the offense to a scheme in which he devised and not the scheme of the HC. We seen this movie before and ignored what was going on because the failed defense hid it. The defense may now be putting emphasis on the problem for the offense and some may not like what it reveals.

I hope the offense gets on track and maybe that track comes easier if Rodgers doesn't demand what they can't provide but use what they can do to the maximum.

With that I say....GB 20-13.

P.S.
Miller and Chubb are hungry...may be game changing....careful OL.

AR is making up his own scheme? Lol where do you come up with this stuff? Are you in the team meetings? Are you in the film sessions? Are you practicing with the guys? Are you in the huddle? No? Exactly. You have literally 0 knowledge of what any of the scheme or game plan is on any given Sunday. You have literally 0 knowledge of any play that is called in or whether it is changed or not. Zero. Zilch. Nada. You wouldn't know a scheme if it slapped you in the face and called you Susan. BTW - AR is in the MVP conversation pretty much every year lol. Won his 2nd in 2014 and almost a 3rd in 2016. GBs offense with Adams, Jordy, and Cobb was near the top every year. It was the defense blowing leads in the playoffs costing wins and another trip to the SB. It's pretty well recognized by anyone who is anyone that if GB put even a mediocre defense behind AR the last decade there would have been multiple titles. Even Brady was quoted as saying AR on the Patriots would have more rings than himself. I know you like to spew negativity to get attention but it's getting old. Give it a rest already.

So when this same non production occurred over the last few years most blamed the root cause on MM. Not saying he didn't have a share of the issues but it surely seems like he assumed the lion's share. I get it, superstar QB vs head coach as a fault is a predictable debate in most circles.

This year many are blaming the O line for the miscues of #12 and there may be a kernel of truth to be had. Would you guys what to go up against the Bears and Vikings D with a QB who runs the play chock down predictably to 0 before the snap and then manage to hang on way too long?

I've wondered what the attitude in the trenches is really like when they take the blame for all the sacks/pressures/hits.

Rodgers also isn't moving anywhere close to his exploits in the past, which does happen with age and injury(s). This same issue has affected many other star QBs and most have overcome by going much quicker in the counts and process. Not 12. Not popular I'm sure but to me this year is playing out like the game has stopped slowing down for him and he is having a tough time accounting for the same variables that he dominated like no other in the past. No question he can still but the ball on the money in situations that few in the league can manage. The same athlete is also throwing balls low and at the feet of receivers without pressure and that will not win championships.

The two games after we play after we play Denver will be the best indication of where this offense is at during MLFs first year as HC.
Good news is that we have a defense and we have better special teams! That alone counts for a good record.

About 75% of teams that start the season 3-0 make the playoffs, so obviously a win here puts us on the path. Frankly, I never imagined we'd be at this point.

This is a long, hard season against tough teams. People get hurt. Right now, we're missing Raven Greene for the rest of the year, and Burks hasn't played yet. We're down two of our gameday 21 right off the bat. That's a 10% drop. And of the remaining 19, some are already less than 100% healthy, so now you're only at 80% strength.

The defense looks good, but they'll have to prove it against Prescott and Mahomes.

Offensively, I'm not quite sure what people are complaining about. So far, we're 2-0, we've had a 100 yard rusher, and our entire starting line is practicing with each other every day. This is all good.

We aren't scoring a lot of points, but IMO, if we just don't turn it over and Scott keeps punting good and we play good defense …..we should be in every single game.

On the subject of turnovers, I did a little research: Adams fumbled twice in 2016 and those are the only fumbles of his career. Jamaal Williams has never fumbled in his career (jinx) and Jones has 2 in 290 touches in his career. And of course, Mr. Rodgers coughs it up pretty close to never. We have a chance to be historically good at protecting the rock this season and that would be a huge boost.

During the offseason, I frequently reminded people that if you ran more you'd throw less. More throws to the TE and RB meant fewer targets of any WR not named Adams. We started with several candidates for the WR spot opposite of Adams: Allison, MSV, ESB, Kumerow,Shepherd, Davis.....and we've already lost one to injury and one to trade.

But the #2 WR isn't going to get a lot of targets because we want the ball in the hands of other people on offense: Jones, Williams, Adams, Graham...….. Now, if Adams misses time, our WR unit is a lot thinner, but if he remains healthy, the #2 guy just won't get that many opportunities.

Right now, it's Allison/MSV/Kumerow as the #5 option on offense. If we can line up any of them and they're healthy then that's a good situation for us.

Agreed. I’m much better looking than the model for the poster “Growing Old is not for sissies.” You can Google that. Thank you for noticing.

Let's see if we can spot the problem:

Davante - 17 targets, 11 rec, 142 yds
Allison - 4 targets, 4 rec, 25 yds (1 TD)
MVS - 11 targets, 7 rec, 71 yds
Kume - 1 target, 1 rec, 12 yds
Davis - 1 target, 1 rec, 28 yds

Graham - 6 targets, 3 rec, 30 yds (1 TD)
Lewis - 4 targets, 2 rec, 14 yds
Tonyan - 1 target, 1 rec, 28 yds

A Jones - 7 targets, 5 rec, 34 yds
J Williams - 6 targets, 5 rec, 28 yds (1 TD)

Without the 47 yarder against the Bears, MVS has less receiving yards (24) than both Jones and J Will. Same for Allison...pathetic. 2 guys (Davis, Tonyan) have more yards with 1 catch. Davante by himself has more production than the rest of the WRs combined so far. He has more production than all of the TEs combined so far. And that is the problem. Teams take away Davante as best as they can because they have nothing else to fear in the passing game after him. GB needs another weapon either through trade or someone stepping up and it needs to happen fast or it's going to be a loooooooong, disappointing season.

The one story everyone keeps missing here: MLF has only called the plays on offense for barely more than 1, count that—one—NFL season.

So in addition to a new head coach, new offensive scheme, playing the #1 defenses from the past two seasons, protection issues, receiver depth concerns, and TE concerns, you must *also* account for essentially a rookie play caller.

At best, all we can say is that we can’t say much about this offense yet—with one exception: MLF scripted the hell out of the Vikings game. Hot knife, meet butter! Once they got through the script, though, the magic was gone.

How much of the struggles are just MLF’s growing pains? I imagine it’s hardest to be brilliant in real-time during your first season as a play-calling head coach. He was down on his own play-calling, publicly, immediately after the Bears game. He clearly nailed the first 4 series (at least until GA coughed up the rock). But it shouldn’t be surprising that on his 3rd game he’d struggle to respond as the defense eventually adapted.

Maybe his play-calling is beside the point, and maybe it isn’t. Like all the rest of the offense, it’s simply too soon to tell.

How long can we expect this “learning the new scheme” to take? So these are practice games for the offense and the rest of the team is covering for them. Let’s be clear, this offense isn’t ready for prime time.
