Cory's Corner: Nothing But Shock And Awe

I am completely shocked.

During the preseason, I was thinking a best case scenario for the first two games would be 1-1. After all, the Packers were playing a Chicago team that was No. 1 in points given up last year and a Minnesota team that was No. 4 in yards given up.

The Packers beat them both.

Did you think the Packers' secondary would look this amazing? I didn't think Kevin King could literally float like a hawk. Jaire Alexander is the best corner in the NFC North, outside of...nobody. At the start of the season, I thought he had a year or two to own that crown. I think he's got it already. "I think he's a complete football player," said Packers coach Matt LaFleur on Alexander. "A lot of corners, you know, they don't like to get dirty. He likes to bring it in the run game as well."

And the Smiths. It's not just that both Preston Smith and Za'Darius Smith have a combined eight quarterback hits. It's that they are both loving being Packers so damn much. Those guys are interview-bombing each other in the locker room and they have turned that side of the ball into a real fun-loving unit.

But if you really want shocked, how about Aaron Jones. I know we all braced for Jones getting a much bigger role this year because historically, LaFleur has embraced the run very well. However, I didn't think Jones would break a career-high for carries in the second game? Heck, he had 19 carries at halftime. Jones finished with 23 carries for 116 yards and a score and four catches for 34 yards. He had 27 touches. His high water mark for touches was 20, he did it twice in 2017. Remember when everyone said that Jones was too small and frail to handle the workload? Well, he is the reason that the Packers didn't go after Le'Veon Bell. Green Bay already had Bell on the roster.

Oh, and speaking of the offense, what about Aaron Rodgers? Remember when this team needed 35 points a game to win? Remember, when they needed to rely on his arm to pull them out of bad situations to scratch out wins? I don't see that happening much with this defense. The offense looked good for the first quarter and a half, but then it appeared that the Packers got content.

On paper, this looked like a 9-7 team that would need help to get in the postseason. Now, it looks like an 11-5 team that will win the division. The defense looks fantastic and can still improve. If it wasn't for a 75-yard Dalvin Cook scamper in the second quarter and a 45-yard catch from Stefon Diggs, Green Bay blows out Minnesota.

There are still things that I question. Like, why is Jimmy Graham being asked to block when he clearly can't? And why did Lane Taylor start this game, after getting thrown around the previous week? It would also be nice to have a dynamic weapon opposite of Davante Adams. Either Geronimo Allison or Marquez Valdes-Scantling needs to emerge.

The good thing is that the Packers haven't played one complete game of football and they are still 2-0. With two more home games this month, they have a great shot of going unbeaten in the month of September, before travelling to Dallas.

I think this team will continue to surprise, so don't put away those wide open faces.

Many of you guys predicted it. The D would carry the day until the O got all of the kinks worked out in a new system. But being 2-0 after playing the Chi and Min defenses is awesome.

Vic’s boys are coming to town on Sunday and his defenses always play well against the Packers. Hope our offense can take another step forward and play well for at least 2 quarters. That should be enough. :).

"Heck, he had 19 carries at halftime. Jones finished with 23 carries for 116 yards and a score and four catches for 34 yards."

Jones HAS to get more than 4 carries in the second half. I think that is a big reason the Packers O started to stall a bit in the 3rd/4th quarters. The Vikes were able to stay home on PA and not worry about the RB so much. Pound the rock to keep them on their toes!!!

I think this offense is really going to shine against Den. Beyond Von and Chubb and 1 good CB in Harris Jr they don't have much to worry about. And their offense is no where near the Vikes. This one could be ugly.

Not true they had more runs then pass plays 16-15 in the 2nd half....you can only run Jones so much or risk injury.

I agree you don't want to risk injury. But 19 carries in 1 half is basically a full game's workload and he was a non factor in the 2nd half. 23 total carries can easily be split 13/10 or 10/13 or 12/11 or 11/12. He gets a full workload while still maintaining threat status all game and can be used on crucial 3rd and short situations GB failed to convert.

Also, either your 16/15 stat is wrong (not saying it is) or AJ didn't have 19 carries in the 1st half. GB as a team had 33 rushes. AJ had 23, Williams had 9, AR had 1. If AJ had 19 in the 1st half that means he had 4 in the 2nd. Williams with 9 makes 13, AR with 1 makes 14. Something is off. It's possible Corey meant AJ had 19 TOUCHES in the 1st half, not carries.

Great start, but with 14 to go a lot can still go off the rails.

This team needs guys like Adams, Lancaster, Keke and especially Gary to step up and take some load off Clark and the Smiths.

The Rodgers-MVS and Rodgers-Davis connections need to start coming through as well.

I think the offense will start to gel once we start facing some softer defenses.

I agree Dave. I don't want to sound pessimistic because we are 2-0. I don't think Jones or Williams can hold up the full 16 game schedule. The team will even more dependent on them when December comes around and I don't know if their bodies will hold up. I'm hoping they stay healthy. Eddie Lacy was a big factor in those December games.

Some of the disbelief on here is funny. Has anyone looked around the NFL? The Packers are one of the most balanced teams on both sides of the ball. If you think we have problems you will really have problems if you were fans of some of these other teams. Sure the Packers need to play better particularly on offense. The pieces are there and they are good. It is up to LaFleur and the players to decide how far we will go.

They're accelerating the bottom out/rebuild cycle. With all this draft capital they're going to have a team of impact players at most positions within 2 years, and since they'll all be on rookie contracts they will have tons of cap space to fill gaps with impact veteran FA pickups.

They're also guaranteeing a house cleaning with the front office staff if they can't turn out a winning season in 2 years or a playoff appearance in 3. Maybe sooner if ticket sales fall too much

It seems the Packers, in contrast, did an excellent job of rebuilding over the past couple of years while still putting out a competitive team for this season.
However, if the Dolphins turn out like the '89 Cowboys, the people of Miami will be dancing in the streets in a few years with a couple of Super Bowls.

To be blunt. The owner is a crazy completely unlikable type, who meddles in personal and coaching every chance he gets. Think Jerry Jones on Meth and you get the idea. What he did was coming since last year, and puts the league in a world of hurt. Naturally, the NFL will do nothing, which leaves them with three teams a drift (four if you still count Denver. I don't. )

This is completely the opposite of reality. I live in Miami. Only once in his ownership tenure has he ‘meddled’ and that was pushing to sign Suh. That’s it. Instead, he opens his checkbook to his (usually incompetent) GM and agrees to sign and draft whomever they say. Spent $400 million of his own money to upgrade the stadium and gives a blank check and complete control to the GMs. An example of not meddling occurred just this past draft. The local guys here reported that Ross, the owner, wanted to trade down and draft Lamar Jackson but the GM said no, I think we should stay at 11 and draft M Fitzpatrick. Owner said he preferred Jackson. GM supposedly told the owner if Fitzpatrick doesn’t work out you can fire me. Guess what....owner said you know best GM. In the end, dolphins just traded Fitzpatrick and Lamar Jackson is lighting it up in Baltimore. Owner could have directed GM on who to draft but the GM said we need a complete rebuild and Jackson can’t help with that.

No need to make stuff up about the Dolphins owner. Dude leaves day to day control of everything personnel related to his GM and coaches (allowed Gase to basically trade away all his best skill players for no reason). Owner knows nothing about personnel. Not does he know how to hire good football people for his front office. He has chosen Numerous boobs to run his team...GMs and coaches.

Honestly, I'm not shocked by being 2-0. A little surprised I guess, because I was thinking they would be 1-1. But not shocked. I felt the Bears were going to take a step back just as the Vikings did a year ago. And I felt that the Vikings would be a little better. My prediction before the year started was they would be 11-5 or 12-4. I ultimately chose 11-5 because I figured they would have a few hiccups along the way.

I will admit that the Smiths with the way they have embraced each other and the Packers have been amazing! Savage has been an absolute stud of a pick thus far! In the Vikings game he forced a fumble and he deflected a pass right into the hands of P-Smith. Amos has been a great addition as well. The new additions have really done well.
But what has made the defense even better is the jumps the players that were on the roster have made. Alexander has been phenomenal. The only thing he has to get better at is catching the interceptions he has dropped or missed. He has had his hands on probably 3-4 passes that he could have picked off. He needs to start making those catches. A healthy King changes the defense. He and Alexander form one of the best Duo's in the league!

The defense is starting to roll and they could get even better as the season goes on. Once Gary gets more involved and figures things out more he could make a big impact. Burks when he comes back will help. Josh Jackson if he catches up could be the ball hawk we want him to be. Keke is another rookie who could come in and provide a spark.

The offense is a bit of a work in progress and will have some rough moments. Rodgers even said as much before the season started and said there would be bumps in the road. But we got a glimpse at how good it can be. Lets not forget that we just faced 2 of the better defenses in the league.
There will still be some hiccups along the way. They still have to find ways to get the other WR's more involved. They need to get the TE's involved too.

I'm just excited to see this team! Its been a while since we have had a defense. And once the offense finds themselves, watch out!

Any play/change that has Graham blocking a premier pass rusher is Rodgers on IR in waiting. It’s pretty clear when Rodgers throws on time quickly he’s tough. It’s the holding the ball thing that scares all of us. What I’m saying in a polite way is in an effort to prevent interceptions Rodgers has taken the 50/50 throw out of the arsenal. I can live with that and am happy we h QB in football. Once the offense finds its rhythm it’s going to shine. Let’s just hope we stay healthy and We can continue to not live in fear of returning to the worse 3rd down defence in modern football history. The Defense ad assembled is long, strong and blazing fast. Great!

I think when guys not named Davante Adams show they can be consistently relied upon on 3rd down or in the endzone and make contested catches you will see more of those 50/50 balls. We were spoiled with Jordy and Cobb for years as safety nets. Now teams simply take away Adams as best they can and aren't really worried about anyone else as a viable threat at this point. Minn was playing without 2 of their starting CBs and all MVS and Allison could manage against backups was a whole combined 7 catches on 11 targets for 44 yards. That has to get better.

Again, Vegas plays it safe and usually gives the HOME team -3 for home field advantage, especially in division games. The exception is a game like the NE/MIA game where NE is an obvious SB contender and MIA isn't going to win very many games. Vegas doesn't care who wins one way or the other. All Vegas cares about is if a team covers the spread or not.

True for the home team initial line spread, but Actually, what Vegas wants is to get as close to 50% bets on each team and that is why the line moves throughout the week. They want the “juice” on 50% of the bets and they are happy and rich.

The Packers need to win every home game (Protect This House) and play .500 ball on the road! That should give them the NFC North and a first round bye. Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope the injuries are kept to a minimum and a deep run is a very real possibility. I just wish the offense could have given the Queens 'The Coup DeGras" by the end of the second half! Geez that 3rd and 4th quarter was too close for comfort!

I'll stay with the Packers going 10-6 and making the playoffs.
Still concerned about the offense -- hopeful but concerned.
Would like to see some modern adaptation of Knute Rockne's box-shift offense at Notre Dame with lots of nimble maneuvers and deceptions.
According the movie version of Rockne's life, he devised the dancing offense when he took his team to see the Rockettes in New York City -- and was inspired by their graceful movements.
Somewhat serious about this, reviving the Four Horsemen.
Perhaps I was overly optimistic that Coach LaFleur is a creative genius on offense.
We'll see what he comes up with, and how Rodgers responds.

Offenses seem to take more time especially since there’s very little practice time anymore at least with live tackling. Now especially with a new coach I think this was expected and probably shouldn’t look into it too much as what it will look like long-term. Give it a few weeks and I think we’ll see a different offense.

Graham supposedly had a stem cell treatment in his knee that improved his flexion/mobility but it is hard to see improvement This was the reason he was kept on the roster, that he was going to be in better shape. Too bad he gets the big check but let's hope he comes around,

We have been saying it for years. WE NEED DEFENSE! The Smiths bring it. The secondary now has it. And how I wish we had another Clark and Martinez. This defense not only got a chance to be good, but dominate. And while the offense struggles on the OL. It's obvious that this headed in the right direction. But what isn't headed in the right direction; " Is the receiving". We went through camp with Vitale, several unknowns, and Graham. Now were screaming for a #2WR. Instead of taking one team at a time. And using the TEs, for other then what was planned. LeFluer needs to stick to the training camp plan. His depth chart. And this will work itself out. Winning brings out the best in players. Don't look back and second guess. We'll find that #2 Wr. And Graham needs to be Graham. LeFluer shouldn't forget Vitale. Or How big certain guys were in camp. He must keep the arrow pointing up.

"There are still things that I question. Like, why is Jimmy Graham being asked to block when he clearly can't?"

It's embrassing to watch the horrible level of effort he puts into a block.

JJ, Go back and review the first half of the Vikings game I was actually impressed certainly not to the level of Lewis but he had some really good blocks.

Packersnews reports that Raven Greene is on IR (eligible to return in 8 weeks) and signed Tremon Smith off waivers from Kansas City. Expectation is Amos may play more in the box.

Prior to the season, I questioned WR depth on this roster. All the speculation that the 2nd year WRs on the roster would make a big jump, G-mo would step up and that GB had a top tier WR group was a bit inflated from my perspective. After two games, that prognosis is looking more and more accurate. I never bought G-mo as a #2. Graham is right up there with Cousins among the most overpaid players in the league. MVS is fast, but not a refined route runner.

I say go out and make a trade or bring in a veteran.

Interesting tid bit:

GB is currently the 2nd ranked scoring defense (1st in NFC), behind only NE. GB has allowed 19 points in 2 games, NE has allowed 3. The next closest is Chi at 24 points allowed.

The last time GB finished the season with the 2nd ranked scoring defense was 2010 and they won the Super Bowl. Let's hope this keeps up.

The chiefs scored all their points in one quarter as well , nobody is panicking there , I think the Packers play a more balanced game this week as the offense starts to adjust and come alive, let’s see Vitale or Lewis blocking and save Graham for the red zone.

All I know is the last few seasons it seemed that the Packers always needed the ball back in the fourth quarter and needed to score to win. This season the offence gets the ball back and seems to be preserving a lead. What a refreshing turn around. I don’t mind the other team completing passes but this season they are all contested and the other guys are having trouble getting open for a change.
Thank you defense, keep up the good work.
