Cory's Corner: No Favors From The NFL
The Packers will have to grow up in a hurry with three of its first five on the road.
The NFL didn’t do the Packers any favors when they unveiled the 2023 schedule.
For the fifth straight year, the Packers will open up the season on the road. In 2019, Green Bay opened in Chicago, Green Bay was in Minnesota in 2020, in Jacksonville to take on the hurricane-displaced Saints in 2021, in Minnesota in 2022 and the Packers will open up 2023 in Chicago once again.
“There's nothing like having an opening day game at your home stadium with your crowd behind you,” said Packers coach Matt LaFleur. “But, the schedule-makers said that's not the case and we'll be prepared to play against a Chicago Bears team that, on paper, looks much improved.”
But it isn’t just the season opener. The Packers start the season with two straight road games. That isn’t exactly the best case scenario for a young team that is trying to find itself.
The first five games are monumental for the new Jordan Love regime — and three of them will be on the road. That tells me that the Packers will be conservative early as it gains confidence and adds offensive wrinkles.
Despite having the odds placed against them, the Packers can still go 3-2 to start the season. And if that happens, 10 wins isn’t out of the question.
This team has a lot to prove. Can Love be a leader and own a huddle? Can Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon be the heartbeat of an entire offense? Most importantly, can this team lean on its defense in the early portion of the season while the offense finds itself?
I think it can. This team has been stockpiling defensive talent for years and now it’s time to see if all that talent is up to the test. (Granted, I didn’t agree with the decision to keep defensive coordinator Joe Barry, but that will likely come up again.)
This team has a tough test coming into this season with a completely different complexion on offense. Now it also needs to be able to gel quickly and win on the road.
The Packers were 3-5 on the road last year — and that was with a veteran quarterback. There are plenty of reasons to worry about next season. Starting things off on the road — especially to a team that has been owned by its former quarterback — is a tall order.
The NFL didn’t do the Packers any favors, but amassing a winning record before the bye is the goal. And if that happens, Love will impress many.

True, but this schedule should be manageable. The Bears will not be a good team, Atlanta is in Flux as is New Orleans. Are we scared of Las Vegas? The Packers have one of the easier starting schedules in the league, all very winnable games.

I like our schedule. Away games early? Advantage Packers.
We’re the stronger team, with little to no tape available for opponents to game plan against.

Each year, rosters and teams turn over and change enough--especially in teams toward the bottom of the league--that the first couple weeks are almost completely unscouted. Chicago will be that way...Atlanta will be close.

The schedule doesn’t matter.
What matters is Jordan Love’s improvement.
Thats the best opportunity available.
WE can hope all we want, for a decent kick-off.
But until everyone participates in the Love phenomenon.
A disappointing finish, might not be going too far.
Remember how we heard Love is all you Need.
Well you're about to see who can leave it all on the field.
Forget the Rust.
Regardless; the penalties and injuries
can only lead to the wrong direction.
Making the game plan unrecognizable.
Forcing Love down are throats means one thing.
Jordan Love needs Time. You heard Gutey.
Thats his approach. All the more power to him.
But why do I feel like a victim and not a fan?

Aaron Rodgers was below average last year. Not 1, not 1 single game throwing for 300 yards. Played like an ass too, avoiding open receivers and was not playing in the offense. Love can manage that and be more efficient.

People need to realize that ARod of 2023 is not ARod of 2010, 2014, 2016, or even 2020. How he plays in NY will have very little relevance to how he would've played in GB--that is IF he chose the 10% route and didn't retire.

#8 as a person is a massive douchcanoe. On the field he was as well if he didn't like you. Only reason Watson was able to show what he could in the 2nd half of the season is because Rodgers had no one else to throw to. Look at the number of throws Rodgers had to Watson after the drop against the Vikings in week 1. Rodgers didn't look his way basically at all until the Cowboys game. He even said that during tape secessions he would see Watson was open and that he needed to get Watson the ball. However, during the game he didn't give a flying $#@& because Rodgers doesn't care.

...and they were 3-6 over that span (including the Vikings game). He was inactive for three of those games. They were 5-3 in games where he was targeted 5 or more times.

Playing at home, away, or on the Moon this team has to learn how to win football games. I'm sure every Packer fan knows how Lombardi instilled into his teams the will to win. Now MLF has to redo that with a young QB and a team that has the reputation of being "soft".
If he leans on the oline to be leaders of this team ...it could work.
My problem with MLF is he the coach that can show the World that 13-3 seasons are due to him and not because of Rodgers? We know he's already a good cheerleader, but can he take a roll of Charmin and turn it into sandpaper?

I’m with you HB (except for the questionable syntax and random capitalization). I still can’t figure out if MLF is an offensive savant and Rodgers wasn’t completely “onboard”, or if he’s average and #12 carried him through MVP play. My hope is that we can win with a QB that run’s MLF offense as designed. One concern I have is when things don’t go well. When things aren’t working it seems MLF gets the deer in the headlights look, and has trouble with in-game adjustments.

2020 was when Rodgers tried to execute the offense as MLF designed about 1/2 the time. Not surprising that is when the team did the best offensively. However, in 2021 & 2022 Rodgers went back to his old ways and the O wasn't as good. I think under Love we will see things closer to 2020 and MLF will look good.

Last year's offense looked a lot less like 20 and 21s, and very similar to the one that got old Suggo fired and shipped to the big D. Last year's offense also looked very much like Hacketts, which also led him to the shitcan line. I'm not saying MLF is a genius, but instead of looking at this season with angst, I'm beaming with optimism. This team will be better from top to bottom, GAURENTEED!!

Love might be better off starting his first two games out of town. If he does well, he should be less nervous, more confident, playing before the hometown crowd in Green Bay the third week. If he doesn't do well. . .

Maybe it's just me, but I feel Love is a pretty chill dude, that'll take the reigns and be a great leader! He'll have a young and hungry supporting cast that won't have to worry about fucking up and falling into QB1s doghouse. The competition at camp, knowing that you have a legitimate chance to contribute, should make for an exciting and intense summer. The cream will rise and be stirred with "LOVE"... I think the away start to the season makes no real difference to anything meaningful. This young team are going to have ups and downs initially anyway. Arguably, getting the early games on the road means we aren’t squandering home advantage early on when the worst bumps are to be expected. I see this as largely a non issue. Obviously one objective this year is to be as good as we can, but the primary goal is to be ascending over the season. That means far more for this roster and franchise.

I like the fact we have two winnable games on the road to start the season. The Bears did little to upgrade a putrid defense besides swapping out a couple of inside LB's. We should be able to score on them. The real test will be the run defense. We keep that under control and we win. Playing on the indoor track in Atlanta against another poor defense will be (hot take!) a coming out party for the speed on our offense. This will be the Jordan Love game to "announce his presence with authority!" Can't wait.

Just thinking about our defense....... I have not been a fan of Joe Barry's and the next time I see the Packer corners playing seven yards off when it is third and three, I will once again be tempted to throw something at the TV. I don't like passive defenses.
Having said all of that, I wonder if we are doing Barry and ourselves a disservice by constantly hyping a defense that has eight first round draft choices. In recent history the Packers drafted defenders Ahmad Carroll, Justin Harrell, Nick Perry, Datone Jones, HaHa Clinton Dix, and Damarious Randell in the first round. Anybody think that bunch should be a top five defense? First round draft choices can mean very little.
Clark, Alexander, and Gary are top quality players. Walker and Stokes are developing players with bright futures. Wyatt and Van Ness are largely unknowns at this point. Savage is a borderline starter with an uncertain future. The development of Walker, Stokes, Wyatt and Van Ness will determine how well this defense plays, but I think we may be a bit premature in assuming this defense should be excellent. As the Packers have proven, first round defenders are no guarantee of success.
I still want a new DC.

First and foremost MLF HAS to have them ready to play, the entire team. Two years ago against the Saints and last year against the Vikings, the Packers were TERRIBLE. Maybe that stops since the QB will actually be around from the get-go.
The Packers start to the season is going to come down to how well they can stop the opposing teams running game, so IMO it's on the defense. Neither Chicago's or Atlanta's defense is the least bit scary so I'm not that concerned about the offense in weeks one & two. But I AM concerned about Justin Fields legs, and the Falcons 1st round draft pick Bijan Robinson out of Texas. Barry has the whole damn spring and summer to figure out how to stop Field in particular, and the has had the entire offseason to shore up the run defense.
I KNOW it will take time for Jordan Love to grow, just like it took time for Rodgers. But the schedule on paper, at least for now, isn't exactly a murderers row. All those new toys on offense will take some time to gel, which is why the running game will be huge as will the "Illusion of Complexity" in the offense. If Love can pull off the illusion and Barry can stop the bleeding they'll be in decent shape.

The schedule makers did the Packers a greater favor this year than last except for 9 road vs 8 home games.
.
8 overall noon games, 5 noon (bares TBD) at Lambeau instead of different days and times almost every week.
9th easiest slate & easiest in the North based on last season's records (take with a grain of salt).
No London games (thumbs up).
And travel miles for away games near NFL lows.
Overall not that bad.

Every team has lot of new players, not only from draft and Chicago and Atlanta should have same problem of bringing team on the same page. Saints signed Carr and that should be battle, but that game will be played at home.
The only game I see as possible problem is vs Detroit, who will start for sure with fire. Their offense would be similar to last season, but their defense will be little bit unknown. Raiders with Garopolo should not be that large problem. I see 3-2 or 4-1 start of the season before bye. And through the bye week, some corrections would be needed for both sides of the ball.
That game vs Detroit will be hard as it is TNF game. Not much time for preparation and/or making some substantial changes.

Whining about the schedule is lame. Let's focus on each week as a wonderful opportunity to kick the crap out of some other team instead of bemoaning how terribly unfair it is that the whole world has conspired against us.
"Three out of five on the road" is perfectly normal and ordinary.

It doesn't matter what the schedule is. JL does not need to be AR to succeed. He needs to be JL...He needs to move the chains to win. We have a good OL,RB's. We have great potential in our WR's and TE's. ML will scheme receivers open and they all have speed to gain separation. Our defense was decent and we have more pieces from the draft. We have as good a nucleus of talent around love as one could hope for as young as they are. they need to execute the offense/ defense and ST. I like the odds of their success. I'm telling you folks...The Pack will surprise....The Packers will return to Glory. GPG

More road games early in the season means more home games later in the season.
Picture it: Green Bay, November 2023. Chill in the air, excitement in The Stadium as the improving 3-3 Packers host the perennially stumbling Vikings, the first game in a run of four out of six in front of the home crowd.
A mid-season run very different than 2022, yes?

"No Favors From The NFL"
With all the ballyhoo coming from the Packers' fans about this season's team, it appears perhaps that the NFL agreed and gave no favor, less that of offering a legit two team face-off/comparison to decide who got the better deal/better decision, the Jets or Packers. There is no justification for the Packers to have that many prime games. I wonder who gets flexed-out first and more often? A 1-3 record before the Raiders game, and if a loss there, it will certainly have the schedulers working overtime on their flexing capabilities.
All you need is Love is being put to the test by the NFL.
