Cory's Corner: Josiah Deguara Has Plenty To Play For

Entering his fourth year, he is still mainly an unknown commodity for the Packers.

I’ve said about a dozen times that we really don’t know what kind of a player Jordan Love is.

The same can be true about Josiah Deguara.

He was drafted in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft — ironically the same year as Love. However, he has averaged only 13 receptions a year in three seasons and has never played more than 35 percent of the offensive snaps in one season.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure about Deguara as a draft pick. The University of Cincinnati product was known for his solid blocking and soft hands but his catching radius on tough throws has always been a question mark.

Now that Robert Tonyan has signed with the Bears, I would love to know what kind of role Deguara fills. Obviously, the Packers are likely going to get a tight end in the draft, especially if Utah’s Dalton Kincaid or Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer are available. (There is a solid chance both will be available because Kincaid has been rated as the No. 13 overall prospect in the upcoming draft and Mayer has been rated No. 28). The Packers’ first pick is No. 15.

But what about the interim? The Packers need someone that they can count on right now. The receiving corps is still green with both Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs nursing injuries in their rookie seasons last year.

Can Deguara, whose receiving high for a game is 66 yards in Week 18 at Detroit in 2021, be that guy? At first glance, I’m saying no. He hasn’t proven anything to coach Matt LaFleur, much less the next starting quarterback in Love.

Then again, couldn’t you make the same argument about Love? Here’s a guy that is vastly unproven and the Packers are giving him the keys to a franchise that does an incredible job at developing talent.

Love will be stepping into his new role with a huge chip on his shoulder when training camp opens in late July. I would imagine that Deguara would feel the same. Many have written Deguara off as simply a blocking H-back and not someone that could be counted on for a critical third-and-6 situation.

Well, this is Deguara’s time to prove himself. This will be his fourth NFL season and there are plenty of doubters throughout the league that don’t think he is dynamic enough to run a full tight end route tree. I actually think he is more versatile because he has the ability to line up in the backfield, act as a lead blocker or even take a handoff or two as a fullback.

This could be a fun year for the Packers, mainly because of all of the creative ways that so many people can get the ball. There are unproven people on offense, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have plenty to play for.

Good luck with that JD...

I can't think of a worse lead blocker I've seen.

Edit: JMike wasn't a very good lead blocker either.

Edit II: Neither was Dickrod.

Prior to his knee injury, I recall him blocking 3 players on a single play… twice.

I think his involvement in the Packers O was limited by AR scheme noncompliance, when healthy.

May see a completely different player this season.

Deguara will now be getting Tonyan's pedestrian snaps so I see little probability his production will go down next season.

And I agree, Love will run the offense as scripted, practiced and called on the field. By design, that will involve greater involvement by the new look TEs.

Deguara is an H back not a move TE. If that’s what the plan is, I don’t see it working. Either LaFleur returns to using the H Back role that he was once so excited about as part if his illusion of complexity and motion or we will see that in fact it wasn’t Rodgers blocking the latent brilliance if LaFleur’s offensive mind. In that scenario, Deguara will continue to be a guy who is under and usually inappropriately used. Last year, when used, he was both efficient and effective. Yet in an impotent and predictable O, blink and you missed it and success never got more targets. Pointless. Over to you Mr LaFleur.

The wicked witch who refused to purely & faithfully run his scheme is metaphorically dead. Off to a swamp in New Jersey. Bartender, metaphors all around!

Coldworld, I think we'll see everything LaFleur originally stated that he wanted run in GB. All of it.

Is that true excitement I feel again? Hey now!!!

For your info Josiah Degara has 78% catches, 2 TD, 9.5 yac and 371 yards in 3 (basically 2) years at Packers. 2022 he was targeted 15 times and caught 13 throws, no TD, 86% catches and 8.8 yac.

Pretty solid results for just 50 targets total, isn't it?

Would you rather have a great scheme or Hall of Fame talent? Well, the talent always wins on the field, particularly at that level of mastery. We'll see how successful the LaFleur scheme is with the greenhorn. We're all hoping it will be fun to watch. But blaming a guy who won 2 MVPs in a row for not running a particular scheme is kind of ridiculous. I'm certain Rodgers knew as much offensive football as Matt LaFleur when they were teamed together.

And by the way, Peyton called his own plays, too. You think Brady's offense wasn't BRADY's offense. But hey if you'd rather watch a young QB try the illusion of complexity, then your happiness appears guaranteed.

Go back to the super bowl. MVP qb PMahomes lofted two lazy TD passes to receivers that were so wide open any D3 college QB could have completed the passes.
Scheme, timing and execution can beat raw talent.
Look back at the Packer offenses of 2011-2014.
Scheme, timing, execution and yes a very talented qb shredded nfl defenses.
Hopefully we get back to those explosive days soon.

You don’t need a great QB to get wide receivers open. You need one to see and hit them. But a poorly designed scheme and poor play calling can frustrate even the best. It’s going to be interesting to see what Love will see, as well as what he does with that.

The problem is that new ad exciting offense from 2019 is now being used by almost half the teams in the league and defenses have adjusted to it. I'm not sure LaFleur's version was ever great shakes anyway compared to Shanahan.

Anyone who thinks the offense will be better sans Rodgers is deluding themselves.

Let’s say you are correct Chesty, and I don’t deny that there’s some substance to your point, winning by doing it better is still possible as is the potential that adjusting to it brings us up to the level of others from behind. In addition, good coaches adapt and learn. Stasis never dominates for long. One would assume that, if he’s got what it takes, LaFleur will implement a related but different O incorporating lessons learned by watching and team analysis. If he can’t, then I agree, he’s already likely stale.

Yes greengold....

Dequara's limited production is Rodgers fault.
Lets be honest, everything is Rodgers fault.

Thank God we have Love and Rodgers is leaving, now maybe we can win some Super Bowls.
************
In reality based opinions.....

I'm pretty sure after 3 years, the Packers have a pretty good idea what they have in both Love and Dequara.
If they don't, maybe they need some new talent evaluators.
This is what they do .....for a living, evaluate talent.

Which may explain why most of our 3rd round picks are gone under Gute, the rest, having a foot out the door..

Personally I don't think Deguara is the next George Kittle, but I don't think that's why they drafted him. He does have soft hands and he can block somewhat. Truth is like Cory has alluded to we really DON'T know much about him. But I think he'll have a role in this offense, a role we just haven't seen because Rodgers didn't want to. I understand he was probably taken at LEAST a round early, probably two, but that doesn't mean he can't help the Packers moving forward

The facts are with each passing season, especially after 2 MVP seasons in a row, the Packers got further and further away from the true MLF scheme. I remember the night Deguara was drafted and how excited MLF was. He ad/has ideas how to use him. Unfortunately he was injured early in his rookie season and was coming back from a significant knee injury in year two. By last season Rodgers was so far away from the MLF scheme and allergic to throwing anything over the middle, NOBODY outside of the coaching staff knows how he might fit.

I'm a HUGE homer, I get it. I will ALWAYS believe in just about any Packer wearing the "G". So I'm excited about what Deguara MIGHT be. Just like I'm excited to watch AJ Dillion run the ball much more with his QB lined up under center. We need a TE, a true TE. But I have always said LaFleur saw Dejuara as him as the Packers version of Kyle Juszczyk. Lets see what happens...

Man, I couldn’t have said this any better. Took the words right out of my mouth, Nick.

I’ll add, Rodgers picked his own players, his own favorites to support. A lot of that, as you alluded to here, had to do with scheme. If he didn’t want to run it, the feature player never got a touch.

I can’t wait to see how the O changes this season.

The Packers version of Juszczyk has a ways to go as far as toughness, blocking savvy, and occasionally being used as a rusher....not to mention that Juszczyk is a 7-time Pro Bowler.

I'm rooting for Deguara, but so far he's shown no indication that he's anywhere close to the caliber of player that Juszczyk is.

People really need to stop with this "true MLF scheme" stuff. 2019 isn't coming back. Things that worked then might not now. How many times have we seen LaFleur turtle it when they got behind in a big game? Denigrating two MVP seasons because LaFleur is a perceived offensive genius is just silly. The receiving core is going to have even less experience than it did last year and they kept Barry. I'd brace for a painful year.

Wouldn't that be an improvement?
What say you Gute?

Together...Dequara, Lewis, and Davis, caught a combined 206 yards and 2 TD's.
WOW!

I mean...for the love of God, our receiver and tight end room is what Gute calls the Packers, going all in to win a Super Bowl?

I liked how they were using Deguara down the stretch last year. Using him more as a FB rather then the traditional TE.

I think Deguara could be a valuable player for the offense. I don't know if he can be a traditional TE or if he will be more of the H back type of player.

The Packers have to find TE help. This is a pretty top heavy draft for TE's. They should be able to land a starting caliber TE if they choose to. I hope they do choose to because they need to upgrade the position. Tonyan is gone, Lewis we are not sure about yet. That leaves Deguara and Davis as our 'experienced' TE's. Maybe they will have unearthed a hidden gem in Austin Allen, but they can't rely on that. They need to go and use a high pick on a TE this year and upgrade the position!

If we would get the Jets 13th pick, wouldn't it be ironic if they used that pick on a WR. Ironic because under Rodgers they never drafted a WR in round 1. And then they would in turn use the pick they got for him on a WR for his heir. And then follow that pick up with the 15th pick and taking a TE.

For TE's there are some really good looking guys that should be able to come in and help improve the team. Washington is like Lewis 2.0. Most are projecting him as a 2nd round pick. Schoonmaker is a guy I like. I think he will go somewhere between rounds 3-5 range. I think most are projecting a 4th round.

I would love to see them double up on TE. Lets say they take Washington in round 2, then maybe in round 4 they could look to get Schoonmaker.

One TE.

One DT.

Dream picks for both if we stick with 13 and 15, in my AR trade dreamworld. It gets even better trading both picks down. That's some Everly Brothers shizzle right there.

Dream, dream dream dream
Dream, dream dream dream

We'd snap just about as many picks from that too. Count the dreams. I could easily see Gutekunst turn 13 & 15 into 4-8 picks. LOL

Wouldn't it be nice if the Packers used a couple of 1st round picks on pass catching talent?

Or.....on offense?
When was the last (and only) time the Packers spent a 1st round pick on offense the last 12 years?
Jordan Love (2020), holds clipboard and tells Gute how nice his hair looks.

11 Def. players

1 Off. player (who doesn't play)

All the 2019 defensive free agent spending, coupled with all the 1st round draft picks, You'd think during that time, we'd have an elite defense right?

If Carter drops to 15, I guess you take him... but who else? Bresee is a terrible under-achiever, guys like VanEss, Foskey, and McDonald are really edges...
Kancey might be great...but he doesn't fit our defense (as it is).

I would be fine with going Edge. We need to upgrade our Edge. We don't know when Gary will return. Preston is good, but not elite. Enagbare hopefully takes a step, but can't always count on that. But we need to upgrade our Edge.
With the rotation we use at Edge I wouldn't be surprised if they would draft one in the first round. Van Ness feels like a Packers type of pick.

We need depth. I think Enagbare will be fine in a rotation but not elite. However, I don’t think we will see Gary back to his full potential this year. Smith, Enagbare and a less sudden Gary at some point and then nothing. That’s not going to cut it. I’d look at taking 2 edge types this year whom I believe can compete for snaps now. One of those should be early. Thus is a good draft to do that. I’d expect some athletic but raw UDFAs too.

And, you're not kidding. Agree with all of it. Gary returning to form this year would be absolutely remarkable. Kingsley Enagbare could surprise us all, and I wouldn't doubt that, but we should draft as if neither of them, nor Preston factors in...

That's the kind of depth we need anyway.

Gute explicitly said that they drafted him because he was one of the rare players in college that played as a true H Back (La Fleur calls it F Back) not as a FB or TE and that that was something LaFleur felt necessary for his O. LaFleur echoed that and that it was a key piece in the installation of the illusion of complexity.

There has been much conversation about a Jets player as part of the Rodgers compensation package and most attention has centered around the Jets wide receivers. The Jets do have three TE's including Ruckert, a recent third round draft choice from Oho State. The Packers could use help for either position, but I think the need may be greater at TE. Anybody know much about Mims or Moore versus Ruckert?

Good point. I have seen Corey Davis and Elijah Moore brought up the most for trade candidates. I have also seen Jermaine Johnson brought up.

But you bring up a good possibility in Ruckert. He was a rookie last year. They have Conklin and Uzomah ahead of him. They might be willing to use him in the trade if the Packers liked him.

Agreed, but the Packers need more than one TE. Do they spend two draft choices on TEs or one draft choice and take Ruckert (or Uzomah or Conklin) as the player from the Jets versus a WR? I focused on Ruckert because I don't think the Packers have cap space for Uzomah or Conklin.

Yeah, and I hope they draft 2. But even if they draft 2 TE's, they would have 4 on the roster. Deguara who is more of an H-back. Davis who is more of a special teams guy and isn't a roster lock.

We have no clue what the Rodgers trade will bring us. If this goes after the draft, then adding a TE like Ruckert might be someone they'd want in return.

I'd rather we save the Jets - some - draft compensation and take EDGE Jermaine Johnson off their hands.

I see EDGE as the bigger need, or equal to TE. Very similar. Without knowing what the hell is going on with our OTs, that position could easily make it a 3 horse race for help...

WR is the least of our worries, quite frankly, and Elijah Moore scares me off a bit with his run in with LaFleur's brother.

Davis? He had 5 drops in 9 games in 2021 before a core injury required surgery - his first year with NYJ, and substandard QB play. Davis' TEN numbers were pretty good in comparison, but, I can't say Doubs isn't already a better player.

A lot of fans might be surprised by Bo Melton, who I believe is also a better player for this young offense.

For me, if he’s going to play T, long term Tom’s skills and physique profile him to the blind side, left.

If we keep Bakh and Nijman, I’d actually like to see Tom given a serious run at C. That’s not to discount Jenkins there, but I’d rather have him at G than Tom and I don’t as yet see an equivalent G to free Jenkins.

Yeah, I usually associate the RT with a brawny, power type.
But IF 50 spends time in the weightroom (and with the proper vitamins) and keeps, his agility, he could play anywhere.

It's entirely possible the Packers choose to reset the clock at RT with a top draft pick there. Maybe R2.

That's kind of my drive to trade out from 15, but... who knows? Have to have the right deal, the right team who wants the pick and is able to adequately pay for it. I haven't looked to see who that might be yet to offer a good guess.

I do find that fun in studying for a draft, too. Looking at the teams with picks to splash around, seeing who we might be able to strike a deal with.

Who would have thought last year's deal with MIN would bear fruit like it did? Early, yes, but Watson shows a lot of promise.

Gg please explain how wide receiver is the least of our worries ?!?!? We have a great 2nd year guy in Watson that often injured, and a 4 th round player in Doubs that’s decent, but also often injured.. No vets( which I don’t really miss Lazard, Cobb, or Watkins) all jags to me.. If any injuries happen we’re done, and we’re already done basically.. I Bo melton could become elite or something..

If the Rodgers trade hasn’t happened or doesn’t bring us a first, I increasingly think trading down is attractive unless the draft throws up a Rodgers type drop. There’s a lot of roster spots we need to fill and a lot of round 1/2 type talent I like and few clear elite blue chippers I see getting to 15. I’d consider trading back twice in certain circumstances.

But IF they see the next Gronk and took him in rd 1, I wouldn’t complain. The idea that they need immediate production is, I think, headed to New York. Why not let a young tight end (along with 9 and 87) grow and develop with 10? I think GB’s “window” has shifted a little.

I would have dumped him and signed Tonyan.
We're 1 step away from a Fire Sale.
And with all the players reworking their contracts.
The gambles could wreck any gains for years.
So why pick up options,
if the player is a question mark?
Just because they're a Gutey pick?.

They shouldn't be given priority.
When they haven't proved anything.
It only lowers the bar to fielding the best team.

Deguara went from 368 snaps in 2021 to 258 snaps in 2022. Not a good sign. Draftscout had Deguara projected as a 6th/7th rounder, high of 4/5 and low of a high priority free agent. I have no idea what Gute saw to impel him to use a 3rd round pick on him. Not a good athlete and not big at 6'2" and 242 pounds. He really had to go to an offense tailored for his best traits: lots of motion, blocking on the move, running some drag routes over the middle. 1 broken tackle in 29 touches. He has good hands, though he also dropped a couple too many. He was a head scratcher at the time of his drafting. PFF grades of 58 and 57.

Since they have no TEs, I suppose he has a chance to show us what he can do and for LaFleur to show us what he can do with a guy like Deguara. Deguara can't begin to play in-line, so GB is down two TEs at this point.

I think his gifting of Deguara to his new HC is something Gutekunst looks back upon with some regret.

As GM, he knows he must rise above that at all times. Let’s hope that was Gutekunst’s takeaway, anyhow.

Deguara’s play was not encouraging at all last season.

Maybe?
But he doesn't have glaringly bigger numbers. Just purely going by their career stats.

Deguara has played in 35 games, started 6. He has 39 receptions, 371 yards (10.2 avg), 2 TD's.

Trautman has played in 43 games, started 28. He has 60 receptions for 641 yards (10.9 avg), 4 TD's.

The numbers aren't crazy different. The only big difference is that Trautman has started a ton more games the Deguara. Deguara had Lewis and Tonyan in front of him.

Deguara is, as you said earlier, closer to a full back than a move TE. In college he ran a different route tree. He was used in the passing game, but we’ve rarely seen him used in that way here. When I think of the TE need, I discount Deguara except as an emergency option—as a FB has often been. Either LaFkeur uses the role or it’s a waste. Is that Deguara’s fault? I don’t think so from what I’ve seen. So do we want that type and will we use it? Equally, we only have one true TE on the roster who has had snaps with us, Davis. Yes, we need to add talent there badly.

You know what I regret? Forgetting to include the words, "chances are."

Seriously, I've been a Deguara proponent since his drafting, and I feel that there has been so much scheme noncompliance since his drafting, coupled with the ACL, that we really can't say what we have with him with any certainty.

Chances are just as likely that he surprises us all in 2023, and Gutekunst & LaFleur look like geniuses.

Being we did not have an R4 in 2020 (Love trade R1), Deguara would not have lasted to R5 based upon what I recall reading post draft.

That's a highly unique scheme specific position Josiah was drafted for. He's the only Gutekunst pick I had right that year!!! No kidding. I just didn't have him R3... but, rather, R5.

I liked him that much at the time, and still do.

I was screaming for Lucas Niang. He opted out of the 2020 season due to covid, tolling his contract. His rookie year was 2021. He played 524 snaps and got a 64 grade from PFF (about what they gave Nijman last season). After starting 7 games, a nightmare of injuries ensued. Rib injury knocked him out after 5 games, missed time, game back, started a game, missed more with the ribs and then tore a patellar tendon in the week 17. That meant he started 2022 on PUP and wasn't activated until late November, but he didn't play except on STs.

Niang is entering his 3rd season. Two sites list him as the starting RT (ESPN and Ourlads) but kc.com has him 3rd string. Jury is out and injuries have been unkind.

Oh well, maybe they don't take Zach Tom if they had taken Niang.

Just not enough. Marcedes Lewis caught 6 of 7 but that doesn't make him a good receiving TE. Deguara is a 3rd round pick, but there simply has been too little production. And his blocking notwithstanding a couple of splash blocks as a rookie has been subpar.

Sternberger: 2020: 12 recs, 15 targets (80.0%), 114 yds.
J. Deguara::: 2022: 13 recs, 15 targets (86.7%), 114 yds.

2020 play got Sternberger released and he is essentially out of football. Not seeing the difference between those stats and Deguara's. Now, Deguara is a better player than Sternberger and I am not advocating for his release, but he is a limited guy who can't begin to play inline TE and can only mumble fake move TE.

I think we have to look at TE as a unit, and not just one guy, because we play two TEs quite a bit of time, and we need an in-line blocker, a move-blocker, and a receiver.

We want 3 active TEs and another healthy inactive. Right now, Deguara would be one of those three. Austin Adams, too. And we'll add a guy.

We only targeted the TE 96 times in 17 games last year. That's about 5.5 times a game, which means you're lucky to get 4 receptions/game out of this unit. Tonyan had 53 receptions and he's gone. Our next most prolific receiver was Deguara, with 13 receptions in 15 targets.

That's less than 1 target per game. IMO, this is a guy who should be more involved in the passing game.

The bigger question is that if you want to target the TE more than 96 times in a season, does that mean you want to throw more passes? Or does that mean you'll throw fewer passes to other people? Who?

Right now, it seems like The Plan is to use the RBs a lot, and then Watson and the other WRs. Even a very good rookie TE isn't likely to catch more than about 3 passes a game.

To me, the easiest fix to our unit is to keep Deguara and Adams and maybe Tyler Davis. And add a guy, but not one of the Top5 guys that get discussed here all the time. A later guy, like Latu or Schoonmaker. Throw it to the TE about 8 times/game.

Rather than a top TE , I'd rather get a Top RB, because we move the ball with our backs, they can get hurt, and there's no guarantee that either of the guys we have right now will be here next year. If we'd take a guy like Gibbs......he'd help our offense.

You’ve always been down on Deguara. I think in one sense rightly, but I disagree with your stance in the player and his potential to help. He was a deliberate pick for a role the coach expressly wanted in place as a key piece and yet that role never materialized. Deguara got hurt then had to fill in against type when others did and by that time the offense for which he had been acquired had long vanished.

Either we use a guy to his strengths or we are swimming up hill. We’ve debated that on both O and D under LaFleur and the role Rodgers may or may not have had in that. I don’t agree with your blame over the player or the pick because it was clearly stated why he was acquired and it wasn’t to be an inline TE. I do agree that subsequent events ask why LaFleur hasn’t used the piece he openly wanted.

If we don’t seek to use the H Back now, I’d be willing to let Deguara go, but not because I don’t think he could show value. He flashed the ability to get key downs and plus hands last year but LaFleur never returned to it. Pointless coaching for reasons unknown, but in a bad and predictable O a real source of questions for me. I thought it interesting that we shed the back up H back roster spot too going into last year, on the PS too.

This is the type of play we should be attempting to use Deguara on. From 2021 and never really tried since. Why? https://www.nfl.com/videos/off-to-the-races-josiah-deguara-shows-off-spe...

Coldworld's picture

March 21, 2023 at 10:13 am

No, he came out of the same place but he played H back. Kelce was a blocking TE who could lead block effectively. with questions about how much he’d offer in the passing game. Deguara was an out and out H back there and profiled as such by most analysts.

Deguara played inline, in the slot, out wide and in the backfield, and lacks true tight end size at 6-2, 242, 3 inches shorter and 13 pounds lighter than Kelce. His comparatives were not with Kelce but 49ers fullback Kyle Juzczyk.

After the draft, LaFleur made it clear that that’s how we saw him too:

““I love Josiah,” LaFleur said. “He is extremely versatile. The thing he brings to our offense is, we can be in the same personnel grouping and we can line him up on the line of scrimmage or in a wing alignment or in the backfield. I think that adds stress on the defense. When you watch Josiah, you see such a gritty, tough player.”

Brian Gutekunst said LaFleur was “very, very excited” about getting a chance to use Deguara as a movable chess piece in the Packers offense.

Given LaFleur’s long-term coaching connection with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and the skill set Deguara is bringing to the next level, the easy comparison for Deguara quickly became 49ers fullback Kyle Juzczyk. And LaFleur confirmed the Packers envision a similar role for Deguara.

“We will try and emulate some that stuff in terms of how the 49ers use (Kyle) Juszczyk,” LaFleur said.”

Cant add the link unfortunately, as I already have one in this thread. Just search ‘LaFleur on Deguara’.

I know all of this. You know I know all of this. I read the quotes back in the day. We've gone back and forth on this. I hated the pick at the time. I didn't see enough to change my mind. It probably didn't help that all fans kept calling him a TE, but that was just an annoyance.

Maybe it is all AR's fault. Maybe it's LaFleur's fault. Maybe it's LaFleur's fault because he couldn't get AR to play within his scheme. As Bmore has said, AR won two back-to-back MVPs with the Packers having the #1 and #10 offenses in the NFL, so maybe whatever offense AR was running was the the offense that should have been run. If it wasn't LaFleur's offense, he probably should put that info on mute. Deguara is an above average athlete - his 6.66 RAS score (or should teams have run away from him in terror?) takes a big hit due to his height and weight, and his 25 reps on the bench was promising. He should have been scored with the fullbacks, if that category still exists.

2023 should be a fair test. No TEs to compete with. No target-sucking elite WR that the QB is laser-focused on. I think you will find that starting QB focus heavily on their top option if there is a significant difference in ability between the top and 2nd best option.

Time will tell.

I see you picked the one play he actually broke a tackle and scored a TD. Putting guys in the correct position to be an asset is something MaLF doesn't always do. I would seriously be interested to know if MaLF called that play or AR did. Perfect call with execution is something we can use more of, for sure.

Hey, I think all of us want our guys to be successful. Deguara hasn't set the world on fire, but he hasn't had many opportunities, for whatever reasons. Maybe he gets more looks this year. Maybe Jordan Love will use him more because of familiarity? Maybe Gutey actually designs more effective plays for him to utilize his strengths?

If you don't use him or put him in a position to succeed, it's hard to blame Josiah, but, someone is to blame...

I really haven’t seen much in the way of how TE really functions in LaFleur’s ideal O. This year we should. But I don’t want Gute grabbing another piece LaFleur won’t use!

As I asked CW in an earlier post, did he recognize who threw that ball. It wasn't AR as he wasn't in the game so if he is also Offensive Coordinator then he was involved in the play. Otherwise, it was MLF/Hackett who called the play and Love who executed it. While only 1 play and it's only an association, but did we see the MLF offense being executed by our next QB to an asset that MLF gushed about, yet is never utilized when AR is at QB? That isn't any smoking gun, but just more correlations to the fact we haven't really seen the MLF offense because AR does his own thing. The real test is what happens in 2023. GPG!

I did think DeGuara was starting to look effective as a fullback, then he got hurt, and it seemed to have a detrimental effect on the offense. I've actually wondered if the Packers might target Hunter Luepke in this draft for that role--he kind of reminds me of Larry Czonka.

"Many have written Deguara off as simply a blocking H-back and not someone that could be counted on for a critical third-and-6 situation."

Get good blocking and not have a third-and-6. HA!

Actually, Deguara showed best late last season when they were using a healthy Watson in motion more. He had key blocks on his TDs and long runs (watch the film). That plays into MLFs way of thinking. All he has to do now is slip a block and catch the ball to open up worlds of other options.

Maybe he can get us to where we have a new TE that won't fall over in a strong breeze. Would sure love to see some broken tackles for a change.

Here, here!
I long for the days of Paul Coffman, Ed West, et. al. who were always good for a couple of yards of drag-RAC!

That's why I'm not a big fan of Luke Musgrave, this draft.

Wouldn't that be nice? It's one of those things along with throwing over the middle that I'm starving to see from this team. Just never has made any sense,

Then again I also never thought in my entire football watching life I would ever see tight end play where one to three yards after a catch was the norm.

So much to look forward to.

Deguara was targeted 15 times and caught 13 passes for 114 yards over 17 games in the 2022 campaign but he finished with roughly half the number of receptions and yards as he did in 2021. With an over 80% catch rate, Is that on the player?

Deguara was often open and ignored last year. Coach or QB, I don’t know, but a guy who gets open (as we often discussed) and catches 80 plus percent who is not used is presumably playing in a dynamic offense or for LaFleur/Rodgers it seems. Trade him or play him, but he’s been wasted thus far.

He also converted a high percentage of first downs either going out of bounds or in a crowd. How many tackles are you going to break in such circumstances? He’s shown he can make people miss if thrown to in space, which, as I’ve pointed out before, we saliently didn’t.

We don’t use him often, even less often on a catching route, and when we do it’s seldom one that he’s got much chance to take advantage of after the catch. Whose fault is that? I do believe we will find out very quickly now, but I don’t believe it’s the player.

I share your frustration with the pick/results as used, but in this case I have no issue with the player drafted nor the drafting. A GM should give his HC key pieces he wants for his offense. I quoted just some if LaFleur’s explanation of his reasons. When those pieces are subsequently not used in that role and that role vanishes then I do have questions.

In this case I think the answer is not Deguara. He’s done as much as he’s been asked in the role he fits and was picked for. That doesn’t include in line blocking and seldom should. Now we see if he gets a chance and what happens.

This guy has been a bust like most of Gute's picks after the 1st round.

What determines a bust?

After the first 2 rounds are there really any busts?

Gutey hasn't been good in the 3rd round. We can all agree on that. These are his 3rd round picks.
Oren Burks, Jace Sternberger, Josiah Deguara, Amari Rodgers, Sean Rhyan.
Not very good. Hopefully Deguara and Rhyan turn things around.

4th round is probably the last round you could consider anyone a bust, but IMO, first 3 rounds can be considered busts. After that its more of a crap shoot.
These are Gutey's 4th round picks.
J'Mon Moore, Royce Newman, Romeo Dobbs, Zach Tom
Outside of Moore who was a bust, he has gotten better with each pick. Newman started as a rookie and was ok. Last year they shuffled him around and it wasn't a good choice. Dobbs and Tom had very promising rookie years.

And just for fun these are Gutey's 5th round picks.
Cole Madison, JK Scott, MVS, Kingsley Keke, Kamal Martin, TJ Slaton, Shemar Jean-Charles, Kingsley Enagbare.
This group isn't too bad. I think they maybe gave up on Scott to early? MVS was a great 5th round find. Keke was good until whatever happend. Slaton is another really good find. Enagbare might be the next one.

In general I don't think its fair to say that most of Gutey's picks are busts. He has has some really good finds and some really good picks. Some haven't panned out but that is just how it goes. Its easy to wait 3-4 years and see how the players careers turn out and then go back and criticize the picks.

It is totally fair to criticize his later round picks as he has far too many misses. I am not asking for all pros with these picks but to have some contributors now and than. Look at how many of his picks are out of the league after just a 2 years. Guys like Moore and Madison or guys that never did a thing like 2nd rounder Josh Jackson or Kamal Martin. At least draft guys that can play special teams but he is taking guys that can't even stick in the league.

3rd rounders as you have shown have been awful. Nothing there to hang your hat on and Sean Rhyan looks to be the latest player drafted there that doesn't belong in the league. I don't need an all pro here but in his time drafting we should have a starter or two contributing.

4th round hasn't been much better. Newman is a below average starter and the rest of to prove themselves yet. Tom and Dobbs where alright but nothing to all that excited about.

5th round isn't good. MVS isn't on the team anymore and was an average at best 3rd option at WR. You are reaching to call Keke anything other than a bust since he is out of the league, still waiting on Slaton to do something and Enagbare is just another player. Not a guy you want starting 17 games for you.

Gute has not drafted well at all. In 5 drafts he doesn't have much for the way of production at all. The roster is thin in many areas and they are in cap trouble. Gute misses more than his peers do and the roster shows for it.

Every GM whiffs more than they hit on late rounders. A great many never make it to a roster. Sorry, historically, if a GM does find a gem or two who are serviceable in any phase, that’s a win. Anything more is a big win. I see you moving up into the mid rounds to support your statement. Again, hit and miss, historically, but MVS as your example of a failed 5th rounder pretty much trashed your case. Most would take that from the 5th in a heartbeat.

MVS is just another player that they didn't even bother to sign again. If he was half as good as you are stating they would have signed him back, especially when trading Adams.

To have this many 3rd and 4th rounders off the team is bad drafting. Most GMs aren't missing that bad, you are just apologizing for him being a Packer. The roster is getting thinner with each passing year and they aren't replacing them with the draft. If you can't see it then you just have blinders on.

If MVS is what you are hanging your hat on for good draft picks than you haven't done a very good job drafting. Need better than that if you want to win in this league.

Well Madison obviously had in his life very tragic event that mess his brain and he was honest enough not to try to get anything out of that from Packers. We do not know if he would be bust or not. Moore get evaluation of many draftnik as second of Davante Adams. It was obvious mistake, but MVS and ESB was very good (MVS) or good (ESB) players considering where they were drafted (5 and 6 round).

You may call Enagbare player you do not want to start 17 games, but he did and did well for 5th round pick. Slaton showed promising development.

Btw, that MVS "bust" was the best Packers player in NFCCG vs Bucs and now has same number of SB rings as ACR. His only problem he had while he was playing with Packers was that he was to fast for ACR and regularly getting ball either behind him (like 80%) or far away in front of him (~15%) and rarely on target.

Players drafted on day 3 are rarely immediate contributors, they are in most cases development projects.

So, look at your rant and tell me how many day 3 drafted players are top starters in NFL in their first season.

Can't have this many misses in the 2nd to 4th rounds and expect to have a roster than competes. Who are the guys contributing on the team right now and where successful development picks? I am not saying every 3rd or 4th rounder needs to be great but at some point you need to have some hits that help this team. To many guys gone or not contributing and sooner or later the GM has to answer for them. His drafting is far behind his peers.

I wanted AR traded 2 years ago so they could actually get something. Your big defense of Gute is MVS, a player no longer on the team and didn't sign some big deal with another team. Where are the contributors? I see you will attack me blindly but you can't support your own claim.

For reference see how Veach runs his drafts. His 2022 selections put them in the SB. The guy should have been out the door, years ago along with low-ball and Murphy. The Choir would rather see the MVP QB run out of town and defend the scrubs on the P squad. The number of whiffs when the team was in a competitive position to Win the Big Game is stunning.

Anyone can criticize anything, anytime they want. I choose to not go that way.

But the truth in the draft is there are always players that turn out way better then you anticipate and players that flop. It happens with every round, and every team.

This is essentially how the draft is supposed to work.
1st and 2nd round players are supposed to be stars/blue chip starters. 3rd and 4th rounds are more of the develop into starters. 5th are more backups/role players/hope to develop into starters. 6th and 7th rounds are typically geared towards backups, special teams, and developmental type of players. Sometimes you find the hidden gems in rounds 5-7. But typically the better players are in rounds 1-4. IMO, 4th round is a key round. The more starters you find in the 4th round or even 5th round, the better your team is.

The deeper in the draft you go the more chances you find more "busts" then hits. But later round players are more flawed then early round picks so you aren't expecting them to be starters from day one. For the record I don't really like using the word "bust". Its overused and loses its meaning.
You can say certain players were busts for GB. Brohm, Thronton, Spriggs, Josh Jones, Sternberger are some good examples of those. They were all 3rd round or higher.

Sean Rhyan is way to early to consider a bust. He didn't look good as a rookie, but that doesn't end his career.

Newman was fine as a rookie. But then this past training camp they were moving him around and it really messed him up. He played well overall late in the season when he had to play OT. He isn't a bust.

Tom was one of the best rookie OL in the league. He played 4 positions and I don't believe gave up a sack (I could be wrong on that). But he was very good.

Dobbs was becoming our number 1 WR until he got hurt.

MVS wasn't on the team due to poor management issues. They didn't have money. Doesn't mean MVS wasn't a good pic and a good player for GB. As a 5th round player you are not expecting him to be Randy Moss. If you are, your expectations need to be changed. To find a starting WR in the 5th round and a guy who made an impact on the roster, that was a great pick.

Gutey has control over the draft. He has hits and misses. Just like every other GM. With the way the structure is in GB you can't say its Gutey, Ball, or Murphy who has made the decisions regarding players and cap numbers. We know ball handles the financial stuff, but we don't know how it all works.

Everyone understands that the later rounds don't produce as much but we aren't getting any production from them. His misses are more than what your good GMs make. We don't want just any GM but one that makes the right choice more than not. You are justifying bad drafts with other GMs who are having bad drafts.

At some point he needs to hit on a player that is good. He also needs to stop with all the horrible misses. His track record can be judged now and it isn't good.

You are over stating Tom calling him one of the best rookies. You need to look around the league a bit more and see how others are actually doing.

MVS didn't sign a big deal with the Chiefs. If he was so good they would have resigned him. I am not asking for Randy Moss here, just guys who contribute to the team and you struggle to show this.

After 5 years the roster has gotten significantly worse and he has far too many misses. The proof is in the pudding. Not being able to sign players because of cap issues is the fault of the GM too. He has to start being held accountable for his mistakes.

Bust?

Look, you need a few stars on offense. Maybe one or two on defense. And you need another half-dozen complementary players. But most of the rest of the 69 guys you have are just guys, and you can't get through the season without some contributions from them. This notion that if a guy isn't a plus starter he's a bust..........that's nonsense, IMO.

I am asking for guys that can contribute. Not too much to ask. Can't keep having these drafts of guys who barely stay in the league. The roster isn't improving. We never get more than 2 players out of the draft and to hang your hat on players like MVS shows how bad it has been.

You're going to have to define "contribute". We have starters, and we have situational players, and we have backups. Backups don't play much.

Look at Gutekunst's first draft, in 2018. Jaire Alexander is a plus starter. MVS was a situational guy. Burks, EQBrown, and Joshua Jackson were backups, and they're all still in the league. The only players from that draft who couldn't stay in the league were Moore and Madison.

In 2019, We got Gary, Savage, and Jenkins. Those are plus starters.
In 2020, we drafted our starting QB, two situational players, Deguara and Dillon, and a starting OL in Runyan. We also have several backups from that draft.

In 2021, we drafted two starters (Stokes and Myers), two backups (Newman and St. Charles) and one situational guy (Slaton).

IMO, we've been helped by every draft, and if I compared it to other teams over the last 5 years, I bet it compares pretty well.

Talk about a guy getting overvalued and overdrafted, he wasn’t on any other teams draft boards. During the draft they had to go to a emergency commercial break to keep from laughing out loud on camera and also to look the guy up to see who he was and what position he played. Talk about a wasted third round pick. Why don’t we just package our third round picks with our second round picks each year and move up a dozen spots to at least get something out of it?
