Cory's Corner: I Don't Believe Aaron Rodgers

The Packers certainly can go 5-0...But I’m not buying it.

Aaron Rodgers is trying to be a prophet once again.

“We’ve got to go back home, get some rest, beat Arizona, and then come back and beat Atlanta, and then go to Chicago, a place where we’ve won a number of times, beat them, go to New York around Christmas, beat them,” said Rodgers after falling apart in Minneapolis, ending any hope for a division title. “And then come home against Detroit, beat them, get a little help.”

The Packers certainly can go 5-0; they have the easiest schedule down the stretch after all.

But I’m not buying it.

According to NFL.com’s Next Gen Stats, Marquez Valdez-Scantling leads Green Bay in separation with 3.6 yards — good for sixth in the league. He has surprised many this year, but he is a rookie and has showed his freshman stripes at times this year. Davante Adams is tied for No. 43 at 3.1 yards. Rodgers has said all year that receivers have had trouble getting open and at some level he’s right — he’s just refusing to pull the trigger to an open safety valve underneath that would move the chains.

Randall Cobb does make his triumphant return this week and he has even been prophetic about this week vs. lowly Arizona. “He’s getting ready to light everybody up this week. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Why would the final five games all of sudden elicit joyous jubilation? The Packers have bickered, pointed fingers and flat-out played poorly. And yes, that includes Rodgers, who doesn’t seem to think that his fundamentals are askew even though he seems to be throwing more and more passes off his back foot.

The answer has been the same all year: short, quick passes operated out of the no-huddle or sugar huddle. Remember when the Packers used the sugar huddle extensively back in 2012? It worked so well that Rodgers was nearly unstoppable because he killed opposing defenses with the short and intermediate pass, with his legs and he killed them with his smarts when a 12thplayer was sprinting off the field leading to a flag or a big play.

You don’t see Rodgers catching opposing defenses sleeping anymore because he isn’t snapping the ball until the play clock is under 5.

Maybe coach Mike McCarthy didn’t want to speed things up with so many young receivers. But now McCarthy and the Packers, for that matter, are out of time. Green Bay has sleepwalked through this season. I still cannot believe that the Packers maintain a 4-6-1 record, even though they only have a point differential of minus 3.

The sense of urgency with this team is mind-boggling. The Packers have always moved at a glacial pace and now Green Bay is expected to move in ludicrous speed just because the playoffs remain in view.

I don’t see it. It still looks like the Packers are in preseason game No. 3 and not making a finishing kick on the season. It took them too long to realize that Aaron Jones is in fact a No. 1 back and Jimmy Graham hasn’t played up to expectations. Graham was expected to be a solid-gold guarantee in the red zone. Granted, Graham is batting 1.000 on getting touchdowns in the red zone, but he’s only done it twice this year.

Rodgers has been a prophet before with his “Shhhh” in 2012 and “R-E-L-A-X” in 2014. A thin roster that hasn’t played four full quarters yet doesn’t make me a believer.

Bags under eyes, just overall...not hale.

The TKstination prefers its jubilation to be joyous to the extreme at all times.

He should be haled into the coach's office and lectured.
He seems hearty, almost jaunty, but not hale.

Coaching change in need no question get rid of soft players just collecting paycheck. Sign Clay 1 yr incentive based move him to middle LB with Martinez rushing QB not his game anymore cut Perry 1 good year in 5? Let young receivers develop. AR needs quick release game like NE QB yeah Goat. AR may have 3-4 years left time to bring home change opinion that he is not a winner.

I know he injured his shoulder right before the first regular season game. He was projected to start I believe or at minimum get lots of playing time. Perhaps that shoulder is still giving him issues but we're just not hearing about it. Not even remotely close to giving up on him.

Rodgers’ phrasing subtly betrays that he doesn’t believe they will do it either.

There’s a big difference between “We’ve got to... beat Arizona, and then come back and beat Atlanta...,” etc., and “We’re not just gonna beat Arizona, Tom Silverstein. We’re gonna beat Atlanta! And then we’re gonna beat Chicago! And beat New York! And beat Detroit! And then we’re gonna go back to Atlanta and we’re gonna win the Super Bowl! YEEEAH!”

This Packers season is the Howard Dean campaign of the NFL. All hype, media darlings at the beginning, beloved by the faithful, but can’t win.

Rodgers is out of real actions on the field and now it's down to inspirational words of encouragement. I can just feel it in my gut that this season could mark the beginnings of the end of what was a long long string of consistent winning from 1992 to now. If Rodgers was 23 I wouldn't care but he's 35 going on 45 with all his injuries and recent play. The future at qb and the leader or leaders calling the shots do not exactly give me confidence at this point. These are very scary times if you are a Packers fan. I feel a little like I am on the Titanic at this point.

Until GB builds a solid OL and a strong back 7 on defense, this team will remain what it is “average “. Unfortunately, it will take 2-3 years of success in the draft and free agency to get there, but if they do they have a chance to see another SB. Why is TT still in the house?

Draft the best guard(s) and possibly a right tackle that they can or sign a FA or both. Concentrate on that line. Sign M. Wilkerson and or draft a D lineman high. Make it a priority to have the best lines possible! What do we always hear? The game is won or lost in the trenches!

This team has played like it has been searching for itself all season. The various issues, concerns and problems have been discussed in depth here just about every week.

At times I wonder how much Gute is controlling who plays and who sits rather than MM. Many times I have felt that Gute is just trying to see who will fit on this team moving forward while moving out the TT guys. He moved fast on Dix with a trade and Perry to IR. Although I believe the defense is better without them.

It seems like Cobb has been out forever while Gute took a good long look at MVS and EQ. I realize that a hamstring can be a pesky injury but it may be Gute's way of ending Cobb's time in Green Bay.

In all of the previous seasons of the Rodgers era I would feel confident about going 5-0. I still have slim hope but with the current state of this team in terms of injuries and level of talent I don't think they are good enough to make it happen.

Rodgers is having a subpar season, at least by his standards and he is still the best player we have. The OL is shambles and worse than that if Bak and Taylor can't go this week. After Adams we have nothing at WR or TE for that matter. Teams are keying on Aaron Jones plus the OL is ineffective on most run plays.

The defense has Clark and Alexander and then the drop off is dramatic. Maybe and hopefully King returns this week. Safety is a carousel from week to week and sometimes from play to play. Has anyone seen an OLB on this team besides Fackrell's brief cameo in Seattle?

They may all show up against the lowly Cardinals and for now I'll be happy with 1-0 for this week. If we get to 4-0 then I'll be excited about going 5-0 if it even matters. Thanks, Since '61

8-7-1 final record, like in 1978 when we also tied the Viqueens (I may be off by a year or....)

That's a terrible place to finish, with about the #19-20 draft spot. Not good enough to get the rare "premium" game-changing talents usually, like a Khalil Mack, Von Miller, JJ Watt, Aaron Donald.
Well, unless a Randy Moss slides to you, and you chicken out and instead select Vonnie Holliday.

Or unless a Jerry Rice, Aaron Rodgers, Dan Marino, Emmitt Smith slide to you.....

I think you are right, so frustrating as trading down to get him was hailed as great pick. Not sure the Pack looks at how healthy these guys are in college can they decide to play or sit. Seems easy for this pick, are you injured or hurt? They should also look into Strength and conditioning coach why are there so many injuries just not prepared to play not in tp shape.

The Packers are one of the best run teams in the NFL...so MM calls 70% pass plays.

His stubbornness is so very frustrating to me as a fan...I can only imagine how it plays in the locker room.

Just like his stubbornness to keep Capers for 5 years too long...like he is doing with Zook now...and sticking with his "chunk play" offense with long developing routes on the perimeter.

After the bye "self scout", MM declared "is it clear we have to run more and pass off of more play action."

Blah, blah, blah.

“I mean, I drill the fundamentals. I throw how I throw. I’m not playing any different this year."

True if you insert I'm not playing any differently this year than in 2017, but not if you put in 2011.

“I listen to my quarterback coach and my offensive coordinator and my head coach. My study of myself, I’m very critical of my own film." Yeah, I don't think so. And if he is, fire the QB coach, OC and HC.

“Rodgers is greedy when he doesn’t need to be,” [Ryan Wood] This rings true.

He leads the league with 47 throwaways, according to Steve Palazzolo of Pro Football Focus, compared to only 82 total incompletions for Drew Brees. Nah, couldn't be due to his greediness.

Rodgers has missed his target on 20.6 percent of his 286 attempts, according to ESPN, which is above the NFL average off-target rate of 16 percent this season. Nah, couldn't be due to lousy fundamentals.

Does AR live in a bubble?

It really is eye opening compared to the last few years. Based on your comment, I'm guessing you have done a little digging and reviewed vintage Rodgers with a critical eye.

Yes, just one game though: 2011 game against MN. No reason to choose that game, it just came up high on the suggestions.

I saw a QB that stepped into his throws when the pocket was reasonably clean, who set his feet on most quick throws like slants, and to a lesser extent on the bubble screens, and who torqued his hips and used good footwork when rolling out and throwing on the run.

Now that you've seen the delivery, go back and look at the targets.

You'll find Rodgers throwing into tight windows, to WRs who have DB's with them stride for stride... but still "open" by most NFL standards. Fast forward to today, and is almost seems like Rodgers demands the largest windows and most spacious of coverage before delivering a ball to any WRs not named Nelson or Adams.

EDP, Rodgers spent most of his young career with a completely shit O-line. He was one of the most under-siege QBs during those years. He still managed to step into throws, get the ball out on time, hit WRs who weren't running free through a field of daisies, and place the ball with extreme accuracy between defenders and into receiver's hands.

I'm not trying to tell you the right side of our OL doesn't need fixing- it does- but I will tell you this: the more people refuse to objectively look at Aaron Rodgers performance- what Aaron Rodgers can do, what he can control, how he has been playing vs. how he has played in the past- and continue instead to simply point fingers and lay blame elsewhere, the more it ensures the Packers aren't going to get better and start winning consistently again.

Aaron Rodgers is wasting Aaron Rodgers' career far more than Mike McCarthy or the front office has over the last few years.

Watch the old games then watch the new ones. If you can't see it, you're not looking. You don't have to like what I'm saying, but when you call me ignorant, I get a little ticked off because I have watched carefully and noted the difference. I haven't found anyone who will tell me they've gone back, watched, and compared and don't see the obvious difference in Rodgers' footwork, fundamental delivery in throwing motion and body positioning/balance, accuracy, decision making, etc.

Regarding running the table this year, for me I'm going to wait to see if they can win on the road at Chicago (perhaps their sternest test of the remaining schedule) before getting my hopes up.

Two back shoulder throws, that's it. One at home vs SF to ESB, which looked like a throw to a spot more than anything else. the other to MVS on their last drive against the Rams. That's it. The Packers may have more called, but like you, I have not seen them execute the back shoulder out those two plays all year.

Edp, what about all the games the last few years where Rodgers isn't injured?

Go back, watch the tape with a critical eye, report back.
Until you do it, you don't have a foundation to call anyone else ignorant or write them off as simply negative.

I am negative about Rodgers because his play has been hurting this team in 2018, and he has shown some regressive traits in his play for nearly the last 4 years that seem to go unchecked.

Lastly, Edp, I don't know how long you've been reading CHTV, but I see you have 17 comments on this forum. I'm glad you have taken the time to read over my "negativity" over the last few weeks and can easily "understand" exactly what I'm about... I've been an active reader and participant in the comments section here for about ten years. I'm often accused of being a "homer". I was a staunch supporter or Aaron Rodgers when many a Packers fan was calling him a bum, injury prone, pretty boy, stats-driven QB who couldn't win from behind, etc etc etc. You are certainly entitled to believe I am wrong about Aaron Rodgers. However, I am disappointed that you're so certain you know all you need to know about my takes because, clearly, I'm just a negative Rodgers hater who forms his opinions from a place of ignorance. I've got a substantial post history here that would suggest otherwise.

Both you and tgr are right. Like both of you I went back during the break and watched Rodgers play from 2010 till now. Mojo pointed out in another thread how Brees had reworked his fundamentals after three losing seasons with New Orleans, after going thru something similar to what Rodgers is going thru now. To put it bluntly, Rodgers is a mess. If we fans see it, than every team in the league and our coaching staff knows it too. This season, Rodgers attitude and play has hurt this team, that's the bottom line.

I never thought I'd say this but I have absolutely no hope or even believe for a minute the Packers can win 5 straight. Even if they did happen some how to win out I guess I have one question....WHY???

I have no desire to watch this team somehow make the Playoffs, get blown out, LOSE, and move back at LEAST 10 draft spots in the process. This team NEEDS talent and the best way to do that is the draft. With their 1st, the Saints 1st, and thier 2nd rounder, the Packers should have 3 picks in the first 45 sports or there abouts. That's a lot of talent and the Packers abosolutely NEED everyone of them.

problem with draft makes the team a couple of more yrs away from playing high level, they are never in position to get impact player in draft, J Alexander is real good but still a rookie plays with confidence but with no pressure on QB he can only cover so long. I like Pettine defense again injuries have forced him to band aid this line is decimated now can't get pressure. I have not felt great about this team since they were totally pounded by Denver a few yrs ago, seems that was the blueprint on how to stop them. Receivers can't get open AR hold the ball too long and Adams although pretty good is NOT best wideout in football. Sorry

KC released Kareem Hunt due to a domestic violence incident. He has been put on the commissioner's exempt list so he can't play for anyone until the investigation is concluded. Link to video.

He should be suspended for at least 1 year. Preferably permanently banned from the league. Thanks, Since '61

Imho him losing his job, missing out on the playoffs and those playoff checks, along with the embarrassment and shame he will endure publicly and privately should be more than enough punishment. The world has changed much in recent years since 61, remember Kareem Hunt is still basically a kid finding his way in life and like any young adult is prone to make more mistakes than a wily vet such as yourself. I'm not saying it's all right to beat up a lady because I don't believe that anyone, man, woman, or child should have to suffer such. However we are not talking about a rape charge or sexual assault, from what I read the girls {there were several} lied about their age to a group of young men with whom Hunt was with and traveled back to their hotel with them, and when Hunt found out they were only 19 asked them to leave, after being escorted out it was reported one of the girls came back and pounded the room door while shouting racial slurs at Hunt. This was reported by several witnesses. She also punched him in the face when he confronted her, he was then restrained and broke free pushing one of his restrainers into the girl knocking them both down. As he walked by he kicked the girls leg out of his way and it was all caught on camera. He should hold his anger better and needs help with that but I know enough not to judge a man til walking a mile in their shoes. I think people should hold judgement til all the fact come to light. The Chiefs actually released him because he lied to them about something concerning the incident , not the incident itself. My problem with banning him permanently is what then is this young lady held accountable for? Should she lose her ability to work in whatever her desired field is? She is young as well and did something stupid that may have precipitated the entire incident. She doesn't need to lose her ability to have a career either. Hopefully they both learn from this. Best case scenario they both move on from this and become better people for it.

I know, but does this incident mean Hunt should be completely unemployable in all fields? Just the NFL? Some fields but not others? Low pay is okay but not well-paid jobs?

I don't know the answer, but a permanent ban seems unduly harsh. Dan Graziano wrote a virtue signaling article that blamed the NFL pretty much no matter what it did. Here, the commissioner put Hunt on the exempt list immediately, making him unemployable in the NFL until an investigation is concluded. I don't know what Graziano wanted the NFL to do. The hotel wouldn't release the video to anyone other than the police. No idea why the police did not issue charges against some of those folks.

Hunt didn't kick the girl's leg out of his way. He just kicked her, not a stomp but it was a kick.

The video isn't something you want on your highlight reel, but it also isn't as bad as some are making it out to be.

Yes, he shoves the woman with force. He also shoves one of his own guys really hard, who ends up tumbling and taking the woman down with him.

The kick is not very violent. I'm not condoning and type of violence, but the kick is clearly not intended to wound or injure. It looked more like a "now get the eff outta here" gesture to me.

It is clearly not the type of behavior you condone or want to be associated with, but it's also nowhere near as violent or shocking as so many are making it out to be. Perhaps I'm a bit numb to the shock having worked security in bars for so many years of my life when I was young.

I agree with both you and GTR. I don't like what I saw but also believe what happened is not worth a lifetime ban. Hell, I truly think drinking and driving which many players and execs do is a worse crime that often ends up killing people and destroying families. What happened doesn't necessarily make him a bad kid, just one that needs to learn more self control. I wouldn't be mad if Gute kicked the tires and did some investigating into his background, who knows maybe this is a one time isolated incident with him never being in trouble before, I really don't know though.

I have been a fan for 62 years. I love my Packers. Run the table and let the chips fall where they may. Then move on to prepare for next season.
Still: Dump the Pumpkin. Lol

Aaron Rodgers doesn’t care what anyone thinks. That SI article and social media whining has us all frustrated with Rodgers. Maybe Cobb will be his security blanket he’s been missing, and he will take advantage of having his slot guy back. Can’t hurt if he’s gonna turn this offense around and win out. Oh, and with a little help from the enemies of our enemies.

Last thing I want is Gute having any reason to bring Cobb back next year at a rediculous rate. Hopefully cobb does nothing for 12 the rest of this year

The rhetoric from Rodgers is a warning. It's a warning from packers history. This team is weak and getting weaker. Patience will run out. This season has been nothing but Propaganda and the destruction of MM. Gute will have to use force to take back over this club. And even if he forces MM out. He still has a major problem in Arron Rodgers. His gifted talent is fleeing. Rodgers is feeding us lies. His words: I'm the same???? His leaderships is in question as much as his off field diversions. The guy is now a control freak. And he is controlling MM and the packer organization. His job is to play football. Not be a consultant for the press or how this team conducts business. His mouth will do more talking, than his play. There's a fire in Lambeau. Arron Rodgers cares nothing about winning. He only cares about himself now.

I don't think they're getting weaker. I'll take 2018s defense over any since the superbowl year. Pettine having a full offseason with the young guys will only help. 2019s offense will ve much improved with MM gone. Losing cobb, perry, Matthews won't make this team worse. $50M in cap space provides opportunities.

The worst place a team can be is tied to long term guaranteed contracts with poor players and the illusion that everythings fine. Thats the 2016 and 2017 packers. We're past the worst of this and on the upswing at this point, provided that Gute can lead this team in the right direction

Losing Cobb, Perry, and Mathews will make this club weaker. While the money will provide new players. The result is the odds won't give you your money's worth. I wrote the above with Arron Rodgers getting worse. The past is not behind us, until a-Rod stops using his influence, and plays like he's paid. His contract is the poor illusion of everything is fine. He's headed down. And if he's not on the IR again it will be a miracle.

Wrong Poor production from highly paid players means the odds are GB will get more production for that money next year

No, the complaint is their over-paid per their production. Not that they don't still have worth. ( The players on the team would argue that.) The IR has taken their season away. Cobb was paid, Jordy Nelson wasn't. He wasn't cut. ( You would not be hoping #12 doesn't throw to Cobb. Because you want him gone.) I agree he has regressed like several. { Even Arron Rodgers which was the point! } CM3 they're still talking contract with. And Perry can't stay off the IR. The problem is each player busts ass in a contract year. Perry would never have been signed if he didn't play big in the play-offs. Making his stock go up for negotiations. The same can be said of players coming to GB. Most deals from TT were done on a Prove it. Have the packers got more out of Graham than Cook? Kendricks than Rodgers? Morrison than Ryan? Williams than HahA Dix or House or any FA their bringing in to patch a hole. The great players that support your argument were Peppers, & White, And both would not have signed, if they didn't think we were going to go to the super-bowl. How many great ones are there in FA that can replace Cm3, Cobb, and Perry? I'm saying you are not going to get free agents coming to Green Bay without over -paying them. Every losing team has trouble. We have gotten mediocrity in return so far. The odds were against the packers because of the age of these guys. And very few players are getting 2 and 3 contracts with that same team now. You must remember that these players are leaving their teams for a reason!

Have to laugh at fans who believe some of the crap posted.

Watch how bad Rodgers is the last couple of years without an injury.

Seriously?

He was hurt in the first game and it is clear he is favoring that leg while he passes and not throwing correctly.
Last year he was hurt and out most of the year.
Last year he had the 4 top OL out and carried the team to 4-1.

so go check the last couple of years again

If you think Cobb helps the team you need to stop posting and go watch him.

Watch in particular his effort on the 4th down draw play so many have been wanting to see when COBB's man makes the play as Cobb stands around yards away after making no effort get Jones an angle. No effort.

The sooner Cobb is gone the sooner we can see someone else. What a joke Jake K was put on IR with a pretend injury to hide him and keep the coaches and gm from making real decisions.
