Cory's Corner: Can LaFleur Make Rodgers Listen?

Thanks to past internal communication issues, Matt LaFleur must make an effort to relate to the future Hall of Famer.

Tyler Dunne’s story wasn’t surprising and it wasn’t eye-opening.

Plain and simple, it was sad. It’s depressing that the Packers have amassed all this talent, yet haven’t been able to capitalize on it.

Many shots were taken at McCarthy. Yes, he was aloof, he refused to change and his communication skills were unimpressive. Aaron Rodgers didn’t escape blame as he held a chip on his shoulder ever since McCarthy was hired as the Packers’ head coach in 2006 because McCarthy claimed that Alex Smith was better. (That wasn’t news, because everyone thought that Smith was better.)

The silver lining is that McCarthy, the coach with a .618 regular season winning percentage, exited stage left after becoming the first Packers coach since 1953 to be fired during the season.

Rodgers is obviously still in Green Bay after inking a $134 million extension this past August. His $26.5 million cap hit for 2019 is 13.45 percent of Green Bay’s salary cap, which is more than David Bakhtiari (7.20 percent) and Davante Adams (5.51) combined.

So with all of the leverage that Rodgers has, how does a new coach handle a huge internal communication problem? Obviously, McCarthy and Rodgers didn’t handle anything, they just let things simmer until it finally fell off the rails last year.

This story makes Matt LaFleur’s job that much tougher. He obviously wants to have a relationship with his new quarterback, but chatting about his family is a no-fly zone. This sounds silly, but it might be a good time for LaFleur and Rodgers to sit down over a meal and just go over expectations. LaFleur should ask what Rodgers expects out of him and Rodgers should ask the same thing. Try to be as transparent right now before the season starts.

Once training camp does start, LaFleur cannot allow Rodgers to split the locker room by making players choose between a new head coach and an 11-year starting quarterback. That’s not fair to the trio of sophomore wideouts and it’s not fair to the rest of the coaching staff. Rodgers is a very intelligent person and he is excellent at pre-snap reads but he needs to listen in order for this new marriage to work.

Pointing fingers isn’t going to win the NFC North let alone an NFC Championship. Obviously Mark Murphy knew that the communication structure was going sideways, because he completely restructured the entire thing. I don’t have a problem with another voice and another set of ears entering into the chain of command because that’s exactly what Ted Thompson didn’t do — he didn’t hold anyone accountable and that’s what upper management is supposed to do.

LaFleur likely isn’t thrilled about this story. He cannot be excited to take over for a coach that couldn’t make it to the finish line of a lost season.

But if he gets communication and he gets buy-in, this team can be pretty special. LaFleur’s outside zone runs, a plethora of play-action and bootlegs will bring plenty of new energy and enthusiasm.

However, none of that will matter if there are trust issues. The Packers have a short window to figure this thing out. Let’s hope LaFleur can turn Rodgers into a good listener.

Good takes.

Look, we all know how great #12 is.
I have both his home & away Jersey plus a blue Pro Bowl Rodgers Jersey. I'm a huge fan & thankful he is ours.
And I have the 2005 Sporting News Draft Guide & it had Rodgers going #1 in their mock & many of us had him rated ahead of Smith.

All that said, there are many reasons why a lot of people don't like the guy. He's arrogant as heII.
He's spiteful. Very stubborn.

You don't find any ex-teammates saying bad stuff about Favre, or about Brady.

Finley & Jennings may be bitter, but what Jennings said about what Rodgers said on the field about Jennings going to San Francisco, that's not "anonymous source" stuff. That's one clear open example of what a prick he can be.

And what he did to EQ, and MVS last year. And also what he did to not help Janis. I've personally liked many other NFL QBs more than Rodgers for awhile.
Such a weird thing loving a team so much (for 40+ years) but ot really "liking" our superstar QB.

And I got to know his father in 2008 & was on his side from the get-go. Unbelievable.

The good news is this: ALL this anti-Rodgers talk on ESPN, NFLN, Etc will surely light a fire under 12.
Let's hope he doesn't get hurt again.

"You don't find any ex-teammates saying bad stuff about Favre, or about Brady."

There are a ton of speculative stories on the relationship between BB & Brady. Just like MM & Rodgers.

As for Farve the attacks were against his character not him as a teammate. Playing for the Vikings, sending inappropriate pictures, pill addiction.

Boyle and Kizer have spoken about how helpful Rodgers has been as a teammate. Farve said that coaching Rodgers wasn't in his job description.

Anyone who is successful will be attacked. It's lonely at the top. This won't help how Rodgers speaks to the media.

The advice I got from my Mom growing up was "it's ok to be the smartest person in the room. It's not ok to let everyone else know you are."

Respectfully- any kind of addiction is not a character flaw or moral failure. These guys are placed under microscopes by everyone, but they’re human like everyone else. I think what endeared fans so much was Favre’s ability to showcase being human while he was in the league. Di** pics aside, he was fun to watch.
Threading needles with a football might seem like it should insulate these guys from life- it does not.
I’m with you on the mainpoint of your comment, but think it’s important to not “round the corners” off of these guys.
I also think there’s usually a little schadenfreude behind a lot of this stuff

Gutekunst gave Rodgers the big extension when there were two years still remaining. Gutekunst got rid of the coach that Rodgers was unhappy with. Gutekunst hasn’t put a viable alternative to Rodgers on the roster.

So now, the plan is to HOPE that Rodgers stays healthy and plays well and isn’t the problem.

>>Gutekunst got rid of the coach that Rodgers was unhappy with.

That's not true. MM reported to MM. MM got rid of MM.

>>Gutekunst gave Rodgers the big extension when there were two years >>still remaining

I'm thinking that was a group decision - Gutey, MM & RB. Given all the background angst and the injury issues with 12, it surprises me that they didn't wait but I guess people felt better getting that issue off the table. But they got no discount for locking in early so I guess I would have waited another year, at least.

Get AR some new weapons and some blockers since he is being paid as the franchise. Big draft for Gutey.

The GM is responsible for contract extensions and hiring and firing the HC. Does Murphy have input? Of course he does. But these decisions are on Gutekunst's record.

I've been around Rodgers a a fan, a handful of times. In 2007 (technically 2008 in the playoffs - player parking lot) after the Seattle Playoff win (Favre still starting)... The only guy in the UNIVERSE interested in meeting Aaron Rodgers in the player parking lot, was me, and this other women (fan). I politely asked him if he would come over and sign. I had his Topps Rookie, and this chick next to me is like, OMG, if I could just say hi to Aaron. Keep in mind he's behind a FENCE. He looked right at me and this middle aged women, and is like *-you I'm not coming over.. Keep in mind, this is PRIOR TO him ever starting a game in GB. He was a total D**k to fans? Let me also say I've been in front of this guy with little to nobody around "Multiple Times"... He's a complete prick to fans.. Make no mistake, him and Jordy Nelson are complete pricks to fans in real life. I'm a very mellow, happy mined, polite collector of Packers memorabilia. I know who decent people, and who pricks are... Two mentioned here? TOTAL fan unfriendly pricks..

Back to the point of the article. Would not surprise me if this guy IMPLODES in the new offense, and decides he really wants to end his career with the team he was shunned by, the San Francisco 49ers.

I personally believe Aaron Rodgers is DONE IN GB.... Diagest for a minute Packers Fans, because we're in for a 3-6 year ****show. This coach will not get his respect, anymore than any coach will get his respect. He was completely BLOWING OFF MM play calling by the end of his run with MM. He truly believes he's a superior "intellect" to most people. He's a smart guy, I don't even challenge that. He's an excellent talented NFL QB, I don't doubt that either.. That said, Aaron Rodgers calling his own offense and hating on people and his HC = the 2018 season result.

Just saying people, we're all assuming because we made a change, it's all good. This team will go exactly as far as Aaron Rodgers "Decides it will go".. It's about his work ethic, not that of his HC or WR's. I'm personally tired of hearing all this BS about Aaron Rodgers..

Heres the deal, if he's really a HOF QB, he'll win another one in GB. If he's who I really think he is as a person and a QB, he'll be sucking up Millions for "playing a role" really well. Just really don't think this human "is what he's being cracked up to be". I caught balls from Bart Starr as a kid, I know what class and greatness really looks like on and off the field.. This guy? I dunno..

Congratulations The VOR, you just moved up to elite status here. Everyone needs to read what you wrote. I am one of a very few group of elite people that can see into the future. What you just described is EXACTLY what's going to happen. This team goes as Aaron Rodgers goes. There's a disaster ahead. LaFleur is headed into a trap just like what happened with the late and great Pat Tillman. LaFleur is going to get destroyed by so called friendly fire of his own quarterback. This last part of Rodgers' career will unfortunately define him. I'll say it again, we desperately need to find our new young future starting qb this season. It's either Boyle or they have to use their first pick in this draft on a qb. Rodgers has left them no choice. The Dunne story has changed everything and it should. He's a real life Paul Revere warning us what's about to happen if we don't take Rodgers sickness with ego and control serious. This is a code red!!

Unlike you, Dash, I cannot see the future. But I can see the past.

In the free agency/salary cap era, the vast majority of Super Bowl winners have been quarterbacked by a guy 31 years old or less. Yes, Brady. Yes, Brady and Manning and Elway are exceptions, and Rodgers could be too. But I always think the stronger play is the rule, not the exception.

There has never been a QB who has won two Super Bowls 10 years apart except Brady.

So, if I'm placing a bet on this, my bet is that Rodgers will never win another Super Bowl. I'm not saying it won't happen, I'm saying that it's not very likely.

Those are some very bad numbers for all the optimists here that think simply getting rid of MM is the cure for Aaron Rodgers and this team. I know you are not a fan of Boyle but in your professional opinion would you agree with me based on the Dunne bombshell story and the odds of a qb Rodgers' age winning it all that it would be in our best teams interests to use that first pick on a qb? Is there any other position in football more valuable than qb? I can read people pretty well and I am thinking you are thinking quarterback with that first pick like I am. Am I right Old School? If you were GM and there's a franchise qb there do you take him over other more immediate needs? We're in 2005 territory again it appears. Do we want an out of control Rodgers controlling our fate? I don't.

Dash, I wanted us to get a QB last year. It's the most important position on the team. Our starter is old and has an injury history. We don't have any backup that has won a game in the NFL.

If I'm the GM, and I have a shot at a franchise QB, I'd pull the trigger on that. IMO, the only QBs that I'd be interested in are Lock or Jones or maybe Finley. I think I could trade down in the first and get Lock in the 20s but probably not at 30. I think that either Jones or Finley would be available at #44. And I'm not interested in getting a project that maybe/might/hopefully work out at some point in the future. Rodgers could get hurt in the opener and we'd need somebody that can play.

I'd also be looking at Josh Rosen, if Arizona cuts him loose.

I do like Rosen. Couldn't believe he outplayed Rodgers at home. He's the guy that lead to MM's downfall so who knows. I would be ok with Rosen and Boyle as the backups. I just don't like Kizer. I just don't. One of Gutey's worst trades IMPrO and also one of the worst in Packers history when it's all said and done. I am fully expecting them to draft a qb in the first round now. Everything has changed with the Dunne bombshell article yesterday. It's all about the quarterback of the future now. We need to have one ready to go very very quickly. Rodgers can't be trusted to be a team player at this point. He's too rich and no incentive to listen to anybody. We are in a code red. This is very serious.

Putting an extremely intelligent QB together with one of the dumbest HCs of recent vintage was a bad idea from the get-go. Thanks Ted. Sean Payton was the man for the job but for some unknown reason, Ted preferred the dumb guy. Why draft a QB #1 and then the following year give him the boss who dissed him the previous year? Made no sense then and still doesn't.

I'm sure LaFleur is a much smarter football guy than MM who will modernize the GB offense and in so doing, will earn 12's praise and loyalty. Retool and re-scheme this offense and all will be well. If I'm wrong then I guess 12 would be who you say he is.

Normally when a team makes a major hire, OC, DC or HC, the first pick of the next draft is that coach's player i.e., a scheme fit on the side of the ball that the coach is in charge of. In this case it will be offense. Since QB, LT and WR1 are manned by stars, and there are no stud WRs, RBs worth the 12th pick, our selection has to be a TE or an OL. I don't think they will spend a 12 pick on an OL. So, by deduction, it will be the TE. Hock will be our guy if he's on the board at 12.

The pick at 30 will be spent on the last piece they need to complete the rebuild of the defense - rangy S. Unless the guy they covet is off the board - S and CBs figure to be hit hard in the 20s. Leading to the possibility that we trade up into the early 20s.

If no trade-up happens and S is gone, then we open the door to another offensive player. Could be OL, WR, RB or even another TE if Fant is still on the board.

If no S at 30, then I think for sure at 44.

If S at 30, 44 and 76 will likely be offensive players: OL. a 2nd TE, WR, RB etc.

Such a draft, combined with our defensive haul in free agency would significantly upgrade both sides of the ball and could lead to a much more balanced team going forward and a team that just might be fun to watch and root for again. Anyway, that's my view.

The dumber coach has more playoff wins, more championship game appearances, and a better regular season record than Payton. I'm sure you attribute that to the fact that Rodgers is just so much greater than Brees.

Last I checked, Sean Payton was still making deep runs in the playoffs whereas our dumb guy couldn't win w/o Rodgers playing like the GOAT. Isn't that what we all know to be the case?

If not, why did only 1 team out of 9 interview MM for a HC job at end of year??? Not even Dorsey would interview him. Methinks the dumb one with the massage during meetings won't be a HC ever again, at least not in the NFL. Who would want a guy who presided over the demise of a winning franchise?! Who let his offense get stale while all around him teams were innovating like crazy? Everyone knows MM is dumb. Rodgers said he had the lowest IQ for a coach that he had ever been around. Everyone knew he had trouble communicating. I guess you buy his line that he was successful HC. To the extent the Packers were success under his leadership early on, it was more despite him, not because of him. 4 best things to happen to Packers since 1960:

1 - get rid of Teddy
2 - get rid of MM
3 - get rid of B Favre
4 - get rid of AJ Hawk

Watch, the next 5 years will be great years in GB.

ps - I hope MM gets hired to HC again, then he can erase the last vestiges of doubt that he is a dumb football coach. He was especially great with use of TOs. Not.

Ted picked Mccarthy because he was Not a threat. He had a year working with Farve for Ray Rhodes. Payton was the best choice, but Ted wanted a WCO guy. McCarthy never ran a pure WCO and you could see the same offense he ran in NOLA as an offensive coordinator that you watched implode in Packerland.

somewhere on this list MUST be Dan Devine getting a broken leg while standing on the sidelines, as well as his departure.

The elevation of Bob Harlan to Team President is number 1. EASILY.

The hirings of Wolf and Holmgren are up there

The signing of Reggie White qualifies

Catching the Bares in the all time W-L standings is pretty good as well.

Getting rid of two of the Three Stooges is good list material, but probably not in the top 3.

High on the list will be the "canning" of Howdy Doody when that day comes. ...and it will come.

The GBP football franchise needs a President that wants to WIN football games and Championships first and create touchy-feely sledding hills and ice rinks a little further down the list.

It is a good comparison Coach McCarthy versus Coach Payton. Both coached since 2006. Both had future first ballot hall of fame quarterbacks on their roster. Both won one super bowl. Both made three nfc championship games. Mr. McCarthy missed the playoffs 4 times in his tenure. Mr. Payton has missed the playoffs 5 times. Both have suffered gut wrenching playoff losses they probably should have won.

I too would like to see Coach McCarthy somewhere else. It would be interesting to see. A HOF quarterback certainly makes any coach better. Bill Belichick was 36 - 44 and made the playoffs once in 5 seasons in Cleveland. He had no Tom Brady there.

Very Rational and sound evaluation, Archie. Those parameters are the strongest with #12 going TE or OT. #30 is the safety spot, the best will be gone by #44. #44-#75 they can fill in the Dline and the TE/OT pick. Le Fleur may want a RB or WR at #44. Don't let the Fans fool you with their satisfaction pertaining to Jones and Williams. Those two are not bell cows in the backfield.

I agree with what you said, which you personally observed & experienced. Rodgers is a prick.

Sure he is nice to some people, sometimes. We all are.

But where there's smoke, there's usually fire. I have many great friends who are Viking fans from Minnesota dating back to the 1980s, and I have a long time Bears fan. I hate both teams Haha, but I personally like Kirk Cousins (and Case Keenum before him) a lot more than the arrogant, spiteful, mega-diva Rodgers.

PS, I hadn't heard the bad parts about Jordy but I do know he never signed the stuff my son sent him or replied.

You start with why you don't like Aaron Rodgers personally and then go on with your take that he is done. At least we can thank you for letting us know it has nothing to do with any football acumen and just on your personal opinion of his character.

For me, it is difficult to think of anything I care about less than what a celebrity is like in real life. I would just assume that all famous people are jerks and be fairly safe with that.

The article that started all this huzzah states that Mr. Rodgers thought the previous coach was a dunderhead and his offense was high school level. Well, he was right. So the thing the next coach has to do is not be a dunderhead and have a good offensive plan.

Stayed tuned, its not the sixties anymore.
Rodgers was given the extension because the Packer finance team can read Future Present Value. He would cost more in the future against the Cap given they do not have a Franchise type QB being groomed behind him.

Kind of sad (but not surprising) to see so many people hate someone they’ve never met nor had a conversation with. Everyone is so eager to find fault and are willing to believe anything negative about someone they dislike without knowing any of the facts.

With “fans” like this, is it any wonder professional players are disinclined to interact with them?

Don't worry Lare, this is the same as the Dunn story. If I wanted to read a hit job on a guy, I can pull out my copy of the Godfather. I've known Aaron to go out of his way for plenty of young fans. One of my favorites was his casually just chatting and keeping a young **Bears** fan company after bumping into them on the street.

Dunn's story is far from balanced... Where were all the qoutes from MM's or AR's suppporters? You tell me that 13 years go by and he survived with only people feeling like this.

Imbalanced reporting is pretty *'$! In my book.

Nothing really new here. We know AR is sensitive, we know the game passed MM by, and we know TT lost the touch and the team.

As JJ said, the rest is just some guys opinions.

The problem with being a star is that you are interrupted constantly by fans, but what is awkward is that these people 'know' the star, who has no idea who the fan is.

Unless you have strong narcissistic tendencies, gushing can get old fast.

I've never met Rodgers, but to me, the celebrity-fan dynamic is a weird social space, where accusations of "entitlement" can often ruin both sides of an interaction.

The Bleacher Report article seemed like a hit job to me for a related reason: I did a name check and Greg Jennings was cited 31 times with negative things to say about Rodgers... that just seems like shoddy journalism to me...

Prick or a competitor? Janis was a bust and if he had any talent he'd be playing WR somewhere else. Demanding performance is what leaders and star players do. What did he do to EQ and MVS last year, make them sad? You are guessing on those two. Finley was hardly a role model here and bitched a lot. Jennings is the only guy quoted who has standing to make critical remarks and the prime example he cited, telling the Vikings "you can have him" was perhaps a terse remark made in the heat of battle, after he perhaps blew a play and then shot the bull with the opposing players. Who knows but if this is all there is, it is nothing much at all. You perhaps heard nothing negative about Favre as the team kept it to themselves. It is only the former players here who bitch, and them much ado about nothing.

Hammer hitting nail, Hawg. That is Leadership. The QB is the Leader. Manning, Brady, Elway all let it rip every once in awhile. Farve endured it.
MVS has made a comment that with the new playbook all the WRs will get a chance to be the Man. This is a guy I will keep my eyes on during the summer league. If Allison doesn't go down or Cobb hit his Wall, this guy gets minimal snaps. He is green but he is also exhibiting the attitude that got his ass booted off the NC team. Adams is the "Man" that's the way it is
See how this draft goes. If I'm in Gutey's shoes, I'm looking for another bonafide WR for the slot/PR job.

It's unfortunate that Rodgers is such a premadonna baby because he's such a gifted player. I know other NFL QBs have some of this ego premadonna trate, but is Rodgers above and beyond emotionally problematic? Having to worry about how Lafleur will have to tiptoe around Rodgers is troubling

I'm sick of hearing about how sensitive Rodgers is ....get over it and go play football Cali boy . I miss Bart Starrs leadership, integrity, unselfishness, team first, non complaining, polite, non- egotistical , classy demeanor

Bart was in an impossible situation as a coach. First, he'd never really apprenticed under somebody and learned how, and then he was appointed coach practically by acclamation. Everybody wanted him.

Then, The Hadl Trade seriously handicapped his ability to restock the roster. Remember, in those days, there was no free agency and the draft was about the only avenue to build a roster.

Bart is a winner and a leader. IMO, the QB position is ALL about leadership. Joe Kapp had the worst arm I've ever seen on a QB but he could lead. The famous Ice Bowl drive wasn't accomplished because of Bart's talent, it was his leadership that got us down the field and into the endzone.

All those HOFers on that team, and to the last man they all state that Bart was their leader. That's leadership.

Hendricks didn't want to be in Green Bay. It's really that simple.

There was lots of front office dysfunction during the 70s and 80s, and as a consequence, we weren't very good. If you've read the stories about why we didn't take Montana, it's a pretty good case study in a bad organizational decision making process.

The Hadl trade was under Devine's watch.

Yo, Coach JV.

Wasn't referring to Coach Starr. Was referring to QB Starr because obviously, Rodgers is a QB, not a coach. QB Starr was a leader for his whole team, not just who he preferred, like Rodgers does. Starr was a Class act, a team first guy with a small ego. He wasn't a premadonna like Rodgers.

That's what I miss in a leader like Starr at the QB position. Glad you couldn't comprehend the message I was trying to convey. Good day, sir.

There are 50 less talented athletes playing in the NFL with as much, or more ego issues, and doing all their self congratulatory self glory dances after each touchdown. Define and measure premadonna-ship across all QBs and skill positions (at the very least), or stop making these claims. Oh, and OBJ is humble pie.

GBPDAN - I agree with you about Bart Starr, but you've missed an important point that both Starr and Rodgers have in common, at least as far as football is concerned.

Starr and Rodgers are both very smart people and very smart players. Starr's performance was poor and his career was in trouble until Lombardi arrived in Green Bay. After Starr heard Lombardi 's first speech to the team he immediately called his wife and told her that the team is going to start winning.

He recognized that Lombardi was intellectually superior to his previous coaches. He also realized that he could learn from Lombardi. With Lombardi Starr began to blossom into the great player who we all watched back in the 60s. Even with that Lombardi tried to trade him twice.

Lafleur like Lombardi may be intellectually superior to MM and at least the equal of Rodgers. Rodgers has stated that he wants to be coached. The translation is that he wants to learn, he wants to be challenged. Maybe Lafleur can do that with Rodgers. We'll see.

I'm thinking MLF and Rodgers will either fit perfectly together or will be the perfect storm. I don't think there will be a middle ground. Hope for the best. Thanks, Since '61

Nice take. I agree that intelligence is often overlooked as fans focus on talent. Starr wouldn't be in the top 100 of great arms or escapability. But damn did he run the offense smartly and play with courage and brains. Rodgers has that intelligence (Jeopardy winner (:) now add in the incredible talent. If he buys into LFd in the same way Starr bought into Lombardi, look out. This may be one of the most interesting year in Packer history, regardless of the outcome.

Lombardi stated that character is higher than intellect. I would like to see more of the former and less emphasis on the latter from our team leading QB.

Lombardi also said give me a boy who gives 100% all of the time over a more talented player. I can mold a scheme for the 100% player to win under.

MLF, got a scheme?

When I was in the Marines, we used to get judged on our "Command presence."

Could we command a room's attention? Did we present with confidence? Were we able to convey our message clearly and in a way that our Marines understood?

LaFleur has appeared nervous in his press conferences for whatever reason. However, I'm sure he can command a room or else he wouldn't have been hired as head coach.

But commanding a room and commanding Rodgers' attention are uniquely different. It's well established that Rodgers is a different animal. Can LaFleur earn Rodgers respect? Will he earn his trust?

Respecting the rank or title is one thing. Respecting the man should ultimately be LaFleur's goal. Leadership is genuinely caring about the whole person: the problem with Rodgers is he doesn't want anyone to know about his personal life. He keeps everyone at arm's length.

Football-wise, I believe LaFleur said they'll have a back-up play and Rodgers will be able to "can" (short for shit can I think) a certain play. So Rodgers will have some freedom. I also thought LaFleur said they'll have someone in the press box communicating down to Rodgers if they see something.

How all this communication goes, we'll find out in pre-season and September. But behind the scenes, let's hope that LaFleur is earning Rodgers trust and confidence.

Coaches can have a lot of styles. You can be a fire breathing dragon or you can be a quiet lead by example guy, As a rule the fire breathers get hired first because they stand out in interviews. If you are more of the temperament of Tony Dungy it takes a while for your leadership style to get recognized. What this coaches style is I have no idea. So what was my point? I forget. Nothing like a couple of negative articles to get people talking. As usual people tend to over react, some the sky is falling. MM got fired because his brand failed. He brought it on himself, we all saw it. MM depended on AR to bail him out without he and Ted building a team around AR. AR seems to be a perfectionist, and to see the imcompetence of the coaching staff and front office was to much. I'm surprised he didn't ask to be traded.

Stories tend to grow legs and grow out of proportion. LaFleur, I think, can use all this information from the article to his benefit. If Rogers is what some project him to be he needs to reel it in. Try and become a better person, let alone teammate. I don’t care how good or how much money he makes( even though money talks) if he can’t deal with a young coach and give him a chance send him off to. SnaFrancisco. Oakland would jump at him. I just hope this story doesn’t linger to the point of being a burden on the team as a whole. I look forward to better days ahead. Go Pack.

We already have a media circus with our new coach. Speculation is for Vegas. The distractions only take away from the task at hand. It's time to tune out the people that want to rehash painful memories. Keep to the talent on the club. The countdown has begun to the draft. New players bring new scenery and Hope. And winning is what we should expect from Rodgers and Lefleur. Not a feeding of rumors and speculation.

Couldn't agree more Stockholder.... The Packers are entering a new era, one that should have happened after the 2014 or 2015 season. I mean how long have we been reading things where the opposing defense was calling out the plays the Packers offense was going to run? I than Mike McCarthy for what he brought to GB but like ANY NFL coach other than BB, 13 years is about 3 or 4 years too long and in most cases about 5 or 6. McCarthy's offense worked for as long as it did BECAUSE of Rodgers and the number of TALENTED receivers they could throw on the field on any given play.

The Packers CAN and WILL still win with Rodgers and all this drama that Dunne, Jennings, Finley, and those "Unnamed Sources" have stirred up will only fuel Rodgers and his teammates which BTW is a pretty talented bunch and will only get better after this draft. I don't give a damn that Rodgers is a prick. I don't care if he gets along with his family. All I care about when it comes to Rodgers is his ability to QB the Packers. All that this has done is FUEL the fire that still burns in Rodgers. If ANYONE doubts this go cheer for the Bears, Vikings, or Lions, make sure we KNOW who you are so we can CLOWN YOUR ASS when Rodgers whips their ass.

On to the Draft!!!

Well, I'll say that 2014 was a turning point for me, and those 2 minutes summed up a lot of bad games previously, and showed bad preparation by coaches. At the time from 2014 onward, the big debate was who was mainly responsible, HC or GM; was it getting poor talent or poor coaching. I think one starts by process of elimination, and I laid it on McCarthy as the first variable to isolate, and eliminate.

Amen. Time to move on, but i have to add some positivism instead of speculation on this "get along" story. These two men in mention are adults and professionals that take their positions seriously; IHMO, i'm an AR fan for many reasons, but i was disappointed/frustrated to learn of how he responded to VOR. Further, i thank him for sharing this encounter. Yet, as judgmental we dedicated fans can be we do put some of these superstars on a pedestal, regardless of how the media works hard to spin things. I would also like to thank Tyler for his informative story and the guts it took to put it out there. This wonderful, one of a kind fan base deserves to learn more of the dynamics of why GB didn't get to the SB at least one more time during Big Mac's tenure. In the end, i believe an NFL team goes as far was the QB can lead them and as i've shared many times, GB fans please recognize you've had 2 HOF QB's back to back and thus our expectations are playoffs pretty much each year. Lastly, i can't help but think a better & more communicative HC, even such as Mike Holmgren could have steered them better. MLF is our man now, so let's get behind him and give him all the support he deserves!

Seems Greenbay doesn't have too much news to report in the small drift-ridden town. Such a wimpy feely feely story wouldn't even get noticed in a big market town.

Now with the fans piling on ARodgers and involving themselves in this petty jr. high pissin match makes GB real appealing to athletes. Why would they want to come to such a pissy fanbase, that takes any remark from teamate to teamate out of proportion, as if colleagues and friends don't shout at each other, and say things from time to time???? Oh, but in GB, we gotta start labeling "premadonna babys".

I'll take a high strung, high demanding team captain, over a lobotomized game manager. Geez....give me a guy that has high expectations and accountabilty, over a smiley nice boy. Is that the wisconsin poster boy you create in your fantasy, and Rodgers didn't live up to that? Get real, and stop this nonsense, tabloid sht.

So much for classy fans iin GB.

You're dead wrong to blame this on local fans. This is a national story. It has been a national story for a few years now. And if you put this shoe on a foot in NY or Boston it would get 10X the attention, not ignored. Look at the Kobe/Shaq drama in LA. Shilling faking blood on his uniform, allegedly. Tom Brady's home life. Smaller stories than this one, but they got plenty of run. There is always something. You knew this was coming given where things are at in the arc of the story.

Mark - not to argue but I live and have lived in the NYC area my whole life and this story has received almost no attention here. You need to understand the baseball season has started and most of the attention has turned to the Yankees and Mets. NYC has always been a baseball city first. Also the NBA and NHL seasons are still on and they have some focus as well. Beyond that the NCAA Final Four
will be played this weekend and that gets plenty of attention here as well.

So a story of he said, he said, they said rumors out of Green Bay over events that allegedly happened months ago doesn't exactly leap to the forefront here. Especially from a reporter with an unqualified reputation who failed to cover The other side of the story at all. The Bob Kraft happy ending in Florida received much more coverage than this mamby- panby tit for tat in Green Bay.

The Packers receive plenty of coverage here during the season especially when they and or Rodgers are playing well, but not much in the offseason.

As I posted yesterday, I went through the Bronx Zoo years with the Yankees back in the late 70s. Now that was entertaining. But the team had the talent to win when they got on the field. The Packers have had Rodgers and that's about it and that's why this is all about him whether it's accurate or not. A few years back when Sitton was allegedly disgruntled did anyone care? Did anyone blame the Packers problems on him? Where was all the clamour when Dix was obviously dogging it until he was traded?

Rodgers gets all the space because Rodgers is the story in Green Bay. Here in NY and Boston etc. not so much if at all. Thanks, Since '61

Perspective, it is a wonderful thing.

I do miss Reggie and Thurman and Graig and Chris and Sweet Lou and
Mick the Quick and Cliffy and Goose and Sparky and Catfish and of course George with a gas can in the corner...

Lets not forget Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson's little "deal" either.

The Yankees sure had some drama...

Since 61', why are you accusing three very popular members here of being the same person? You know the real schmucks like your filthy foul mouth side kick John Blood are only going to believe you and make things worse. It's almost like the return of award winning journalist John T. Kirk yesterday made you go crazy or something. Could the fact he's a journalist and you allegedly used to be a journalist have something to do with your negative tone today? I happen to love Kirk's writing style. I don't agree with everything he says but I like him. I think he's brilliant. He's not out looking to be liked like you are. He's only here to state the truth. You seem to take this issue of Kirk's return very personal. So much that you are accusing me of being him and even Dragon who I only liked because I was being supportive with his numerology nothing more. I really feel like Kirk has gotten to you and it's causing you to say really stupid things. You are even hanging out with low life scum like John Blood. I thought you were a three? Yeah, I am going to sit there and write ten thousand word replies to everyone. I am not capable of doing that. Only you and Kirk are. You have a history of writing novels and so does Kirk. Maybe you are Kirk? I would love to play your game but I have too much respect for Kirk. I have never ever written like that and neither has that Dragon5 guy. I would appreciate it very much if you and your ilk would stop the stupid accusations. Did you ever consider the fact there's more than one person in the world that might not think like you do about this current team and front office? I see a train wreck. Apparently so does Kirk as do others. I like to post a lot and so does Kirk when he actually does come on here which is very little. That is about all we have in common other than we don't like what's in store for the future. Now please stop with the stupidity Since61'.

That's what seems to elude you, Dash.
I'll make it simpler; it is pointless to discuss this "serious subject". It has nothing to do about 'facing reality'. Most fans here probably assume there is some truth to the story that Rodgers miffs some people. We just think its a non-story, it happens, and then nothing worth dwelling on after that.

Most of us believe new opportunity exists hereafter a substantial house cleaning and a new staff.

You seem intent to convince everyone we're doomed, and the new staff has no chance.
You just might be right that we're doomed. You might be wrong.

Now what else do you want? Your devoid of any constructive future action for the packer organization.
The only sensible thing to do is move forward under new regime. That is bold and constructive and reasonable and faith in human ingenuity. Bitchin endlessly about your bombshell is cowardice gloom and doom.

Time will tell if this new arrangement will work out.

I was very interested in the fact that Rodgers has not resolved the problems he has with his family. This is very disturbing. It shows a general lack of maturity. Yes, there are always 2 sides to any story, but resolving (or not) these differences tells you what you can eventually expect from from an individual. What makes you think he's going acknowledge is role in this fiasco? If he can not acknowledge his own problems in relation to his family, how can he resolve issues with the Packers?

If you think for one second that all Murphy said to Rodgers was "don't be the problem" you are as naive as hell! I suspect he laid down the law with him. The executive committee probably may have been a little voice in Murphy ear. They have a "s******d of money in vested in him and they "demand" a change of behavior!

If Rodgers doesn't "tow the line" (behavior wise) there maybe some contractural issues coming into play. Wouldn't surprise me.
I also think that if Rodgers doesn't "behave", he's traded. And if he's traded his (Rodger's) legacy is shot...toast...done for! At his age it would be very hard to over come the bad PR. His post football career would be in serious jeopardy.

Cap rules totally eliminate the possibility of trading Rodgers.

The damage to the franchise in talent drain due to no cap money would be the same as the Hadl trade if not worse.

Trading is NOT an option.

Another excellent post blacke00. What I like about Dunne's bombshell article is it's allowing more and more newer people here to express their honest opinions rather than sitting back saying everything is going to be great and Rodgers and LaFleur and going to get married and live happily ever after. I love the fact two brave journalists, Dunne and Kirk at least opened the dam to see what's in store if we don't fix this.

It wasn't a excellent post. It was stirring the pot. Rodgers was full of criticism last year. MM failed to publicly address Rodgers criticism. Some people know how to dish it out. But can't take it. Rodger's doesn't need to address anything. Had MM been Danica Patrick. He would have kept his mouth sealed. Rodgers is going to have a good year. Why? Because this new coach has the same bonding with Murphy ,Gute and the stockholders. The press will try to keep the wound open. If Rodgers is smart he won't give the press what their fishing for. Confessions are for church. Not the press.

That's BS!

It's been public knowledge about Rodgers family issues for a long time. Articles have been written about it. He's a public figure! I'm not telling the world any great secrets!

What you don't understand is what I mentioned is very important. If you were working for a Fortune 500 company and making that kinda money you bet your A** that they would be monitoring your behavior ( with family and friends). You may make poor decisions based on "emotionality" instead of objective facts. If I would have been on the Packer's executive committeeI would have been cautious about extending Rodger contract without some "safety" clauses. BTW, I'm a 'stockholder" for what that's worth LOL!

If you tried pulling these "tricks with MM" working for any large corporation you would be shown the door and you're name would be mud in that industry. It just so happens Rodgers has a skill set that's very hard to find so the Packers put up with it.

My biggest concern is that Rodgers is going to continue this immature behavior and it won't matter about "salary caps" and "dead money" the team will be screwed as bad worse than the "Hadl" deal. I am old enough to remember that.....

I am confident that Rodgers will work well with LaFleur. Many point to Rodgers as a major contributor to the firing of McCarthy. Rodgers is anything but stupid and realizes that if LaFleur fails or indicates that Rodgers is not cooperative or is changing plays for which he has not been given the authorization to change, then the public opinion will turn on him as the bad apple and so will the Packer organization.

I'm going out on a limb by saying this... and I know most people here will not agree with what I say, BUT...

I believe that LaF has the balls to bench Arod if he starts blowing off too many plays. LaF says he uses a system where there are 2 calls to choose from, and AR will have the freedom to pick one or the other. If AR starts to chuck both plays on even a semi-regular basis, I think LaF will bench him for the remained of the game.

LaF is a smart guy and knows that he might have to exercise a heavy hand if he's pushed far enough... I don't think LaF will be bullied by Rodgers.

lol.. you're kidding right? please tell me you are joking. LaFleur is not going to do anything but cater to Mr. Rodgers if he has any chance of surviving. Rodgers will have full authority to do as he wishes out there and the full authority will be issued by Rodgers himself. He's going to eat LaFleur alive and embarrass him if LaFleur tries to control him. Do you really believe the key to making Rodgers "happy again" is to have three guys in his mic telling him what to do and then benching him when he doesn't do what they tell him? lol OMG this is going to be a fun season watching all the clueless people here be in shock when they see Aaron Rodgers even more pissed off than he ever was under MM. This is a train wreck. The Packers have made all the wrong decisions on how to handle Aaron Rodgers. Total backfire.

To answer the title question... NO!
LaFleur is in trouble here in Green Bay. I thought GBP hiring him was foolish. Rodgers is the best quarterback in the league, just ask him (with no media around). McCarthy was an arrogant a**hole when I met him in 1999 when he was a part of Ray Rhodes staff.

When McCarthy got termed, I was hopeful the Packers brass would have found a coach that could control Rodgers and his ego thus allowing Green Bay to become dominant again.

Rodgers is a darn good quarterback. You don't have his numbers by being anything less. Let's hope the former regime was the major issue and the new regime will use collaboration of experience of players and build something special.

As far as Rodgers and the Packers, they will go as far as AR12 wil take them. I don't think they are built wl enough yet to allow Kizer to make them successful, should something happen to rodgers

Just caught a bit of the NFL Channel bio of Mike Holmgren.
A young Holmgren was hired as quarterbacks coach for the the 49ers during the era of the magnificent Joe Montana.
When the two first met, Montana initiated the conversation by saying that he wanted to be coached, coached hard.
That's how to grow in greatness, as a player and as a man.

I don't care what kind of relationship Rodgers and LaFleur build, if the Packers don't draft better players in positions of need (OL, Edge, TE...) Dunne will have fodder for another article, 12 will move on to retirement and LaFleur will join the ranks of assistants who fail as head coaches. With a team heading in the wrong direction it's LaFleur who has to earn respect not Rodgers.
