Cory's Corner: Be patient with Josh Jones and Kevin King

Sunday was a taste of what you’re going to see for quite awhile.

Josh Jones and Kevin King played all 61 defensive snaps. Jones had a monster game by announcing his presence with authority. The hybrid linebacker had two sacks, 11 tackles and eight defensive stops. King didn’t fare too well. His assignment was six-time Pro Bowler A.J. Green and Green proved why he’s a top five receiver in this league.

With the inconsistencies of Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins, this tandem will see the field more and more. King has to be given time to learn and get better. He has the physical attributes to be a solid shutdown corner, but it’s not going to happen right away.

This is exactly what this defense needs right now. It needs a couple guys to grow together and make the unit even better. And Jones is so valuable that he is called upon in short yardage to play inside linebacker and stop the run.

Will both guys fail this year? Oh yes. King will likely have bad games against Antonio Brown and Mike Evans when the Packers travel to Pittsburgh and host Tampa Bay.

But what has to happen from these two is that there must be growth. Jones must understand offensive tendencies in his quest to be the defensive disrupter. King has to know that he isn’t Aquib Talib just yet and that this league is full of capable pass catchers.

But fast-forward 10 weeks. If these two guys can show a deep desire to get better, they will be the defensive anchors in the next few years.

Jones wowed in camp with his physicality and bone-crunching hits, but now that he’s doing it in a game is a completely different story.

Jones and King has the ring of a law firm. The closing argument for these two is plenty of promise thanks to loads of athleticism.

Talib is a thug. Not a fan of his.

THUG - noun: A sensational player that "we" don't like because he plays for a different team and is no more of a choirboy than our own guys are.

Talib is the only starting CB that didn't give up a TD last season. His insane opponent passer rating of 46.7 was second in the league, and was less than half of the hideous 95.9 passer rating that GB allowed as a team last year. He allowed 36 catches on 73 targets for 372 yards all season. He nabbed three INTs.

If Talib had played for the Packers last year they probably win the Super Bowl.

Now that Ladarius Gunter... he's a right fine gentleman.

I have high hopes for both of these young talents. Jones seems close to ready now and King will take a little longer to fully develop. Both should become difference makers, which is exactly what this D needs to get it to the next level.

On a separate note, I see the Packers sign a OT from the Cardinals PS to our 53. Murphy has now appeared on the injury list. Things are getting brutal with the OL. Hope Bak can get back for Thursday!

We have seen very promising DBs looking good for a few games and then put out crap efforts with no end in sight. The double initial twins will go through similar results as Cory articulates.
The issue at this point is the defense as a whole is pretty lousy. Until Daniels can come back...that front wall isn't going to hold up and will put some real pressure on those LBs and DBs.
If you have HHCD playing like last year verses being MIA, Daniels at fulll speed, Mt. Adams get some playing time, and the double initial twins playing at starter levels.....it takes the pressure off Rodgers having to win the game by himself.

They will have thier ups and downs. But we've seen the upside of both of them already. Josh is a wrecking ball and Kevin wnats to play against the best. I like those traits.

I don't think we have to be patient with Jones. That game was a coming out party if I have ever seen one .I'd say he will be at least decent from here on out. King will require patience however...
