Closed Practice Brief: September 1, 2019

Closed Practice Brief: September 1, 2019

Injuries, Usage, Formations, Personnel:

  • Did Not Participate: WR Darrius Shepherd CB Ka’dar Hollman ILB Janes Crawford TE Jace Sternberger DL Fadol Brown.  Wood
  • Returned: CB Kevin King (hamstring), TE Jimmy Graham (fingers), OL Cole Madison (ankle). Limited to non-contact: CB Ka'dar Hollman, LB James Crawford.  Demovsky
  • [Why who is on the PS matters:] Nine former GB PS players currently on 53 – Jake Kumerow, Geronimo Allison, Danny Vitale, Robert Tonyan, Tony Brown, Tyler Lancaster, Lucas Patrick, Will Redmond and Tramon Williams way back when.  Hodkiewicz

Quarterbacks and WRs:

  • Gutekunst said "not really" when asked if he considered keeping EQ on the 53 one more day so the Packers WR could get the return designation: "He's part of our future, he's part of our team. I thought it was important that we took care of him."  Wood
  • In discussing Darrius Shepherd vs. Allen Lazard, Gutekunst notes Shepherd's ability to return kicks. Which is significant.  Wood
  • Raiders claim QB Kizer off waivers, source says.  Demovsky
  • Asked Gutekunst what was the deciding factor between Tim Boyle and DeShone Kizer: "I just think Tim performed better in the preseason games." So, yes, in this case, the stat line really did tell the story.  Wood

Running Backs:

  • So now, barring an unexpected trade, the Chargers say Melvin Gordon can play for $5.605 million or not play at all.  Pelissero  [Sean McCoy signed with KC for $3M per Rapoport.]
  • The Eagles are waiving RB Josh Adams, source says. He ran for 511 yards and 3 TDs last year but it’s a crowded backfield now. Should have interest on the waiver wire. Garafolo  [I don't know much about Adams, other than he led the Eagles in rushing with 500 yards and is 6'2", 225 pounds.  I included it just because I saw a lot of comments about adding a running back from outside the Packers' organization.]

Linebackers:

  • Gutekunst suggests the Packers might get ILB Oren Burks back "soon." One reason he was comfortable being a little light at LB.  Wood
  • To facilitate this deal [trade from Miami to the Saints], Kiko Alonso agreed to an adjusted contract that fully guarantees him $5 million with no offsets by next week -- $4M paid by the Saints and $1M by the Dolphins. Last year of his contract stays the same, with a $6.4M base salary in 2020.  Pelissero  [Vince Biegel sent by the Saints to Miami as part of this trade, per Rapoport.]
  • Brady Sheldon's spot on the practice squad opened when another player backed out, a source said. I'm not sure who backed out. We'll find out soon enough.  Wood

Defensive Backs:

  • CB Kevin King was pretty clear: he expects to play Week 1. "My plan, I'm going to be out there." He practiced today.  Wood
  • safety Darnell Savage said he’s a 21 Savage fan, and of course the parallel was in his mind when he changed his number to 21 this morning.  Wood

Offensive/Defensive Line:

  • On the Justin McCray trade, the Packers swapped seventh-round picks with the Cleveland Browns for 2020, per source. So, they will get whichever seventh-round pick is earlier.  Wood
  • Adam Pankey has decided to move on after spending most of 2017 and 2018 on the Packers' practice squad.  Huber  [Titans signed him to their PS.]

Overall/Miscellaneous:

  • I'm told the Packers did not get anyone off waivers. Doesn't mean they didn't put claims in. But any additions today will come from street free agency and/or trades.  Demovsky
  • The Carolina Panthers claimed DB Natrell Jamerson.  Pelissero  [Kizer was the only other Packer claimed on waivers, per Silverstein.]
  • All 8 2019 draft picks are on the roster. So is 2018 D5 Cole Madison, who stepped away from football last year and missed the entire season for mental health reasons.  Demovsky
  • Veteran QB Brian Hoyer is headed to Indianapolis to visit the Colts.  Pelissero
  • The quick exit of third-rounder Jachai Polite from the Jets included more than $100,000 in fines imposed by the team for tardiness and other infractions.  Pro Football Talk
  • Nagy announces that Eddy Pineiro will be the Bears’ kicker in Thursday night's regular-season opener against the Packers: "He deserves it. He earned every right to be our kicker."  Larry Mayer
  • The Vikings are signing former Browns punter Britton Colquitt and releasing promising young punter Matt Wile, sources say.  Rapoport.

I would like to encourage you to join the CHTV Pick Em group.  Just pick the winner of each NFL game straight up.  This is just for fun and for street cred.  Cut downs were going on when I wrote the article explaining how to join, so here is a link to the original article explaining how to join.

I chose to use James Crawford's photo at the top of this article. I have some admiration for a guy who makes an NFL team doing the dirty work on Special Teams. And he did it even though he was limited to non-contact today. He was the biggest surprise to me when he made the 53. I would have released him to keep ESB on the 53, and then re-signed Crawford after GB put ESB on the IR.

Sounds like Sheldon was the last guy in when GB put together the practice squad. Maybe not, though.

Not a fan of Crawford. I would have just plained released him him too. Lowrey and Crawford on that left side is a major concern. Summers and Gary is the other. I believe Martinez needs to move back and forth in the middle. WE want to get the most out of Summers. And Martinez. But Summers and Gary should not play next to each other in this game. The Smiths will help Summers. And the DL will get more push if they don't worry whose behind them. Summers development is more important then Gary at this Time. He's ready.

Sounds like the player who backed out was Pankey? If so I don’t blame him given the depth and his remaining PS time. I’m glad we got an ILB in the PS. We needed one. I really would love to know why M Jones didn’t get a spot on the roster or PS.

Polite seems to have manufactured a stunningly rapid exit from the NFL. Wonder if anyone is looking at Ficken. Wonder if anyone would have looked at Crosby.

I just don’t understand Crawford being retained if one is, as Gute admits, thin. In reality Crawford made it very clear he is not capable of playing ILB during the preseason. I’d hoped he would be a minor revelation after mini camp, but it just got worse not better.

Even if Burks were healthy, only Summers is depth and Greene has no healthy depth behind him either except at true safety. This just seems bizarre. A pure ST player needs to be an extra at an otherwise adequately deep position. Crawford is a non player at the intersection of two dangerously shallow pools.

It seems clear that EQ’s injury was one that they don’t think would have allowed him to contribute. That was a pretty clear statement that he will be back come next off season.

Wondering if we keep Crawford until Bolton is healthy and can be signed to the team?

Actually, I don’t have a problem with Crawford, as long as he cleans up his tackling, which is a very common problem across the entire NFL early on. He’s been there to make plays. Just needs to finish the play with urgency. Great STs player. Think I saw him make a play or two in coverage.

This staff has liked his play at ILB since OTAs. Now is the time to just sit back and see what they’ve been looking at. I feel they have earned my trust so far.

I mean, I get what you’re saying, and let’s see just how gifted our personnel & coaching staffs really are. They’ve collectively been pretty staunch and unified in their comments on ILB, for some time now.

Add Sheldon on PS as well, whom I liked too. Pretty cool.

I liked Crawford till the games started. His angles are horrible and, unlike Summers or Sheldon even, he often doesn’t get there unless it’s in front of him.

I have no issue with a pure ST player. I don’t dispute that Crawford is an excellent one. But, when building a roster, one must cross that player out of the depth chart effectively. That clearly they did not do since we open with 2 other ILBs healthy enough to play and Greene at Hybrid has zero depth. Makes no sense.

They could have cut Crawford and brought him back when Burks and Campbell are healthy.

Crawford = Jarrett Bush = Jeff Janis, but Bush and Janis actually made some plays in games that mattered when it counted.

No doubt I thought he shouldn’t have made the 53, but wanted to see what they thought, and I guess we did! Roster spot facilitated the trade.

Possibly another trade to be made?

So, only Kizer and Jamerson received a waiver claim. Perhaps Shepherd would have been claimed, IDK, and Pankey signed with Tenn to their PS.
Otherwise, another year where fans overestimate the value of our PS candidates.

Looking for Jonathan Spader in the weekly pick em! And a bunch of other regulars. 23 people have signed up in the first day or so. Has to be done by Thursday before the first NFL game, which I believe is the Packer game.

I think we could have moved Madison and D Williams to our PS, I’d add Boyle too, and had a stronger current roster.

The defense now has a new 52 and 21. Last year at this time and this year look a lot different and I like it.

Most teams sign PS players that were in camp for the preseason. They know the system and are most ready to contribute should a roster player go down. The idea that because only 2 of your cuts were signed to other teams rosters indicates some failure is simply wrong. This is particularly true at the beginning of the year. As the season progresses there is a fair amount of churning to the PS.

That is fairly true, it was certainly Gute’s MO last year. I do think there are some they want to keep long term. Baylis would be one, Nijman and Ento others who are development types and probably Lazard and Looney if they see upside as yet not realized.

Others such as Carson and Sheldon look like extra depth for now. Players like Taylor are probably there for an extended look since they didn’t get much of one in camp.

Really don’t know about Wilkins, could fit all 3 categories. He was either deliberately hidden or he is a short term filler. Not seen anything that gives me insight into his upside. It could equally be that he is off this week.

Ramsey is another I can’t fathom. Despite watching, I saw little from him in camp or games. Perhaps they did, but equally he could be a place holder for Roberts (if he can play this year) or just short term cover. Since I would have had M Jones on the roster, I may be really off base here.

BG addressed the thin ILB group stating Pettine rarely uses 2 ILB personal & Burks will be back soon. In essence Martinez will be on the field & maybe another a ILB for a few snaps. Hope Martinez stays healthy.

Per Packers Wire: inside linebacker Curtis Bolton, who was waived with an injured designation. If he does not get claimed on waivers, the Packers will likely try to bring him back later on this season when he is healthy.
