Closed Practice Brief: August 26, 2019

Closed Practice Brief: August 26, 2019

Injuries, Usage, Formations, Personnel:

  • Not practicing today: Allen Lazard (concussion) EQ (ankle) Kevin King (hammy) Ibraheim Campbell (PUP) Curtis Bolton (knee) Oren Burks (shoulder) Malcolm Johnson Kabion Ento (hammy) Greg Roberts (PUP) Cole Madison Corey Linsley J Graham (hand) R Gilbert (knee).  Wood
  • Corey Linsley is working on the side.  Owczarski
  • Former Packers S Josh Jones, a 2017 second-round pick, has gone unclaimed on waivers and is now a free agent.  Field Yates
  • The Packers announce they have signed CB Jackson Porter and waived injured S Mike Tyson.  Jackson Porter is another ex-Ravens player, which means scout Milt Hendrickson had some background with him. The 6-1, 193-pound Porter was a final cut of the Ravens.  Silverstein
  • Rashan Gary and David Bakhtiari both returned to practice after missing Sunday. Only new DNP is center Corey Linsley, who had missed a couple of practices earlier in camp with a biceps injury. Also, Jimmy Graham went through [stretching but did not participate in practice].  Demovsky
  • OLB Rashan Gary and LT David Bakhtiari return. C Corey Linsley (unspecified) is the only new addition to those out. A total of 11 plus 2 PUPs [Greg Roberts and Ibraheim Campbell] not practicing.  Silverstein

Quarterbacks and WRs:

  • Wicked double move from Jake Kumerow... I also love when Boyle let’s this loose! Held the FS and let it rippppp.  Fennell [From the Raiders preseason game, and you can watch the video clip here.

Tight Ends:

  • [Graham] was on opposite side of field as us, but looked like he had some sort of black tape around a couple fingers on his right hand.  Schneidman

Linebackers:

  • LB Curtis Bolton is walking with no visible limp in the locker room. Not sure how that’s possible after he left Thursday’s game on crutches with a right knee injury.  Schneidman
  • After extensive study and opinions from specialists, the Packers have a final answer on starting LB Oren Burks’ pec injury: He’ll be back this season and will not require surgery, sources say. He may not even need to go on IR. Absence should be short term.  Rapoport

Offensive/Defensive Line:

  • The Patriots have informed veteran DT Mike Pennel that they are releasing him, per a source.  Mike Reiss
  • [Pennel is an] Interesting option if they’re not in love with Lancaster.  Uglem

Overall/Miscellaneous:

  • Eight of the 17 players (and nine of the top 20) who played the most defensive snaps for the Packers in 2018 are no longer on the roster. And Reggie Gilbert (11th in snaps) is on the roster bubble.  Kruse
  • One more gone from this list today and Reggie Gilbert & Justin McCray are far from locks on the 53. The purge continues.  AND  Remaining struggling performers combined grades for past two seasons: Justin McCray: -21.8, -7.15 Reggie Gilbert -7.10 Jimmy Graham -6.25 They purged everyone else.  Herman
  • You can tell Milt Hendrickson has some pull in Green Bay. The Packers have added a bunch of former Ravens this offseason.  Kruse
  • According to PFF, the Packers lead the preseason with 42 missed tackles and it’s not even close.  Carwile
  • Andy Herman has some interesting tweets on his feed in which he suggests which personnel would be used in various defenses, such as 3-4, 4-3, 1-5-5, 2-4-5, etc.  You can look at them here.

Hammy. Reminds me of Rickey Henderson.

I was going to use a photo of Milt Hendrickson but I could not find one, so I defaulted to Gute.

There was a long tweet of sorts about a conversation between Bakh and AR. Bakh noted that the last two closed practices have gone very well for the offense, and AR said it was because the offense could now use all of the playbook. I am paraphrasing since I can no longer find the quote.

This missed tackles if held above league average could easily aid a loss in a close game.

Dang. Links, bolding, font color changes. Looks good.
Those would be nice features for posting comments.
Oh yes, the content is most excellent too! Thanks!

42 missed tackles in first three games? Sounds too low.
PFF must be easy graders.

The only question I have: "Are both B & B ILBs on 53?"
That would be great but leave ILB thin for 1st few weeks.

I liked Pennel. He showed some promise as a rotational DT, but he was let go after a second suspension for substance abuse policy violation in one season (2017).

He is, like Lancaster, a run stuffer, and played the role well in NY. Since he signed with the Patriots as a projected starter this Spring though, he has looked poor and was last seen playing in the last quarter with the scrubs. One of those ahead of him is Lawrence Guy. The Pats lost 500k in dead money from signing bonuses when cutting him. They clearly believe his signing was a mistake.

I think Lancaster is safe.

I agree Coldy, and I think Lancaster might turn out to be a very solid player here. Smart kid who is super motivated to do so.

The defense purging continues as the Packers continue to bring us the enhanced version of Pettine’s D with the type of flexible, athletic players he desires. Can’t wait to see the results against Da Bears and hoping they reach Top 10 in 2019.

Under more misc junk, the number of players from last year still not employed by a team is a remarkable stat, especially when you total the number of snaps played by them last year.
