Closed Practice Brief: August 20, 2019

Closed Practice Brief: August 20, 2019

Since there will be no more practices open to the public, there will be no more roundups.  Still, the media was given access for 22 minutes today.

Injuries and Tidbits:

  • Not practicing today: Kevin King (hamstring) Josh Jones (illness) Ka’dar Hollman (stinger) Ibraheim Campbell (knee [On PUP]) Oren Burks (shoulder) Danny Vitale (calf) Kabion Ento (hamstring) Greg Roberts (PUP) Jimmy Graham (finger) Reggie Gilbert (knee).  Wood
  • LaFleur said Sternberger will be held out Thursday vs. Oakland.  Demovsky
  • Jace Sternberger is actually not out of concussion protocol just yet. Today was only part of the protocol. Still needs to respond positively to physical exertion. Sorry for the confusion. Regardless, a positive sign of his progression.  Wood
  • With his back feeling better, will Aaron Rodgers play Thursday vs. Raiders? Sounds like it's still up in the air, but Rodgers certainly didn't hide his feelings on the preseason. "The best reps I’m going to see all summer," he said, "are in practice."  Wood
  • Packers camp totals Total practice time: 30 hours, 49 minutes (16 practices). Longest practice: 2:19 (7/31) Shortest practice: 1:18 (8/4) Practices 2 hours or longer: 6 Practices less than 2 hours: 10 Average practice time: 1:55.  Demovsky  Click here for a comparison to prior training camps.
  • [With open] training camp over, the regular-season portion of the team’s practice schedule starts today. Only 22 minutes of practice open to the media. No team periods.  Wood
  • Thomas Evans didn't make the Packers' 53-man roster in 2017, but enjoyed the experience enough to offer a strong recommendation to former Richmond teammate, Alex Light, to sign there.  Hodkiewicz [Running an organization in a classy way can help down the road.]
  • Lane Taylor on the guard battle: "I clawed my way to get to where I’m at now, so it’s nothing new for me.”  Huber

I'm guessing they've either worked out a trade for Jones or in the process of doing so.

He'll probably be on the initial 53, then traded immediately afterward.

His illness? He's sick of GB.

It's as you all say or he's really sick? Hmmm?

If he is sick what can be that holds out so long? Quite easy actually...Infectious Mononucleosis (Mono). He's in that age group that's prone to it. If he does have it he will be kept out of strenuous physical activity for weeks. The question is does he really have???

Do to Jace what they did to Chumura his rookie year; put him on IR before the season begins. Let him learn from Graham, pump weights, and absorb the system. Get him ready for next year.

Bo,
Absolutely!

Would be minimal value this year anyway unless a rash of injuries at TE.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jones traded to the Saints to get Taysom back in GB.

WHY? Where does he fit? He's not a QB. He's a gadget player and special teamer.

We need to stop romanticizing Taysom Hill and move on.

If you were the NO GM would you trade away Hill for Jones? Not likely.

Why he's not a QB? He is listed as a WR/TE on the Saints roster.
He has thrown 7 passes and completed 3 for 64 yards, no TDs and an INT.in 2 seasons with the Saints. Why would we want another backup QB who can't play? BTW, he has caught 3 passes for a whopping 4 yards.
His best stats are 37 rush attempts for 196 yards. Should we trade for him as an RB?

The Saints keep him as a gadget/ST player. He's 28 years old with virtually no experience as an NFL QB. He is just another preseason MVP. It's long overdue to move on from the myth of Taysom Hill as an NFL QB. Thanks, Since '61

I never said bring him back as a QB. I'm just saying in today's NFL we need a player like that. A player that can be used all over the field. It's time for some innovative thinking. Bears fans are giddy Nagy is down in Chi experimenting with 4 RB sets creating confusion and nightmare matchups all over the field. I want that kind of outside of the box thinking in GB and we could absolutely use a gadget player like Taysom. I think MLF would be able to come up with some nifty uses for him.

Yeah, I’m sure 4 RB sets cause lots of “confusion”. SMH. Come on man. The only reason they would do something so anomalous is that they have Trubisky for a QB. I’m not even sure it’s a legal formation but if so, good luck to the Bears. Gimmick schemes don’t win championships. The Patriots don’t run any gimmicks and they have pedestrian players all over the roster. It’s about execution and playing to your identity/strength...not trying to wow everyone with what new and odd formation you deployed IMO. Just sayin

The Patriots win because they have the greatest coach to ever do it on the sidelines. 15 top 10 scoring D's in 19 seasons. No one prepares for an opponent or makes in game adjustments like Beli. I disagree with "pedestrian" players though. NE is always loaded on both sides of the ball.

Also, how about that "gimmick" play in the 4th quarter against the Packers last year right after the Aaron Jones fumble? The fumble swung momentum and the trick play sealed the deal. Beli isn't scared to call trick plays at all and does it more often than people attention to.

You don't win for 20+ years by not changing your approach and adapting to the way the game changes.

No, putting Sternberger on IR now is not a good idea. He'd have to pass through waivers. He certainly would be claimed, and become a non-Packer.

King isnt a dissapointment talent wise. His unavailability is the only true dissapointment and no one could have known that in advance.

True. There is a narrative out there that a healthy King at present is a quality starting CB. He hasn't been that so far. I do like King's talent and the way he matches up so well with big, fast, boundary receivers. He has certainly flashed.

Jaire and Davante have battled and tested each other all training camp. It might have done wonders for King to have battled Adams' route running and MVS' size and speed in training camp. Alas, not to be, again. I do expect a healthy King to be an acceptable starting boundary CB, and can only hope that he will develop his full gifts and be better than that.

No doubt. For all three of those guys, I think Gute could pry Mack from Chicago. Gute needs to make this happen now.

Something is up with Jones; definitely agree with post he could be involved in trade. Moore hasn’t shown much, but there might be a team short on WRs and want to kick the tires on him. Lewis is a good vet. We need another ILB. Something is up. What about another scenario involving Jones and Taylor? Jenkins probably beats him out, he’s got trade value

I would consider Jones and Moore to 49ers for their QB, TJ Beathard.

It's being reported on JSOnline that BG says the plan is to get Rodgers some reps against the Raiders on Thursday.

No way Jones is traded unless two teams are interested (not likely). Why not just wait till cut downs and get him for free? If he can't crack the lineup vs UDFAs he is probably done with football anyway.

The crappy part is we might lose one of Shepherd, Lazard, Davis or EQ. If one of those guys could be flipped for a good OT prospect that would be awesome. A better QB2 would probably take more.

Hey fellow Pack fans, lets be more positive about Josh Jones. He just wants to play more and didnt feel he was being used enough. He's a quality player with a lot of room to grow.

My guess with Jones is they are afraid of him getting hurt and having to offer him an injury settlement. I figure they are either waiting to see if a trade can happen or they are cutting him at the end. Terrible to give up on a second round pick, but if the guy doesn't want to compete and perform then it is time to cut bait and move on.

I love the idea of Sternberger to IR and perhaps replace him with Lazard at TE for this upcoming season. It is not like Graham blocks all that much. I really can't see Lazard making to the PS. I love his potential. Want to see him get first team reps with Shep.

If we have an injury, I’m happy paying a Taylor or Jenkins to come in and protect Rodgers and help run the ball. Madison in future perhaps, but right now a big step down. If Turner is the swing tackle, the number 3 guard is likely to play a fair bit one way or the other.

Josh Jones did not fit into our plans , and he knew this and so he wanted to go somewhere where he did, and we don’t have any decent trade offers but we don’t want him getting hurt so he just hangs around.

Who benefits from this ? The Packers should just cut him loose, like they did Spriggs.

I think it is pretty impressive that Jones has been unable to stave off competition from a UDFA and a street free agent. This narrative that Jones didn’t fit mystifies me. He practically had a red carpet to a starting role and somehow missed a turn.
