College Football Playoff

Sugar Bowl, Jan. 1

No. 2 Alabama vs. No. 3 Florida State

Comment: Neither team has to fly out to the West Coast for the semifinal as they battle it out to decide the best team in the East.

Rose Bowl, Jan. 1

No. 1 Oregon vs. No. 4 Ohio State

Comment: After a blowout win by Oregon in the Pac-12 championship, the Ducks get the No. 1 seed. The playoff commitee also avoids deciding which Big 12 team is more worthy for a playoff spot, aided by Ohio State's crushing of Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship. They also get a traditional Pac-12/Big Ten Rose Bowl.

 

New Year's Six

Orange Bowl, Dec. 31

Georgia Tech vs. Michigan State

Comment: Georgia Tech gets the ACC-contracted bid against the highest-ranked non-conference champion between the Big Ten and the SEC.

Peach Bowl, Dec. 31

Baylor vs. Mississippi State

Comment: The playoff committee avoids Ole Miss playing two games in Atlanta this season by scheduling Mississippi State for Baylor.

Fiesta Bowl, Dec. 31

Arizona vs. Boise State

Comment: Boise State gets the Group of 5 bid after winning the Mountain West title, facing the Pac-12 South champion.

Cotton Bowl, Jan. 1

TCU vs. Ole Miss

Comment: They miss out on the playoffs, but TCU gets a consolation prize by staying close to home to face a top SEC team.

New Orleans Bowl, Dec. 20

Louisiana-Lafayette vs. Fresno State

Comment: The Ragin' Cajuns stay close to home, packing the Super Dome for a fourth consecutive year.

New Mexico Bowl, Dec. 20

Utah State vs. UTEP

Comment: A pairing of two teams within relative driving distance of New Mexico.

Las Vegas Bowl, Dec. 20

Utah vs. Colorado State

Comment: With Boise State heading to a New Year's Six Bowl, Colorado State takes its place in the Las Vegas Bowl as the Mountain West's No. 1 team.

Potato Bowl, Dec. 20

Nevada vs. Central Michigan

Comment: As the team with the better record, Utah State is rewarded with a warm-weather destination. Nevada is relegated to a cold-weather site.

South Alabama vs. Western Michigan

Comment: South Alabama stays in-state against an up-and-coming Western Michigan team.

BYU vs. East Carolina

Comment: BYU goes to its contractually-obligated bowl.

Marshall vs. Northern Illinois

Comment: Marshall honors all its Florida natives by going to a Florida bowl game to play the MAC champion.
