Charles Woodson: Genius

From the same Dougherty article comes the following:

In an informal conversation this offseason one defensive teammate characterized Woodson as a “genius” for his ability to play at a high level last year despite missing at least two and often all three practices a week because of a broken toe sustained in the regular-season opener. He was voted a Pro Bowl starter, though he didn’t play in the all-star game because of the injury.

“What you don’t see is the amount of time he spends preparing in terms of the mental aspects of it,” said Thompson, who played 10 years in the NFL before his front-office career. “He watches tape all the time and studies the opponent about as well as anybody I’ve ever been around.”

I couldn't agree more. Woodson is so under appreciated around the league it's laughable. The guy never gets mentioned in the same breath as Bailey or Samuel but he is just as good as both. (The only corner in the league I would take over the guy would be Asomugha, who is just on a different planet than all the other players at the position)

One of the greatest plays I've ever seen was this one from last season's Seahawks game. This clip is the official NFL.com highlight of the play but it doesn't do the brilliance of the play justice (it does do a fantastic job of showing The Handshake) No, to truly grasp the amazing nature of this play, go to the 3:19 mark of this video for the replay that shows Woodson come off his man and jump in front of Frye's pass to Carlson. It's the type of play where, if you saw it in a game of Madden, you would decry how blatantly obvious it was that "it would never happen in real life".

Not unless you have Charles Woodson.

Ha Ha Ha. "That would never happen in real life."

I say that all the time when playing.

Come on Aaron. He is apreciated over the league. Just look at any forum, and you'll see that a lot of fans think he's clearly top 5, and that we have one of the best CB tandem in the league. It's just that you got an opinion from someone who doesn't have a clue about what he's talking about. Him and Dukes are just pathetic... Look at his name, Bucky Brooks. I think he watched too many cartoons...

I say it's unrealistic when Woodson doesn't get two picks in a game.

He was already playing at a Pro Bowl level already during the 2007 season. Also the handshake is classy. I wish we saw more of that.

CW hasn't really shown any signs of aging performance-wise. In TTs tenure he's been the highest performing member of the defense, hands down. He's the main reason I don't really worry about our aging secondary because our young guys are probably going to have at least two more years under their belts before this guy isn't starting for us.

Reminds me of an article I read on peyton manning a year back. Nice read.

Chuck is the best in the league over the last two years, plus. Should be getting DPOY votes since he wins games. He made Payton Manning cry.
