Casey Matthews Suggests that Brother Clay Doesn't Like Inside Linebacker

Casey Matthews told the Philadelphia media that he doesn't think Clay likes the new position he's playing.

To hear Clay Matthews say it, he's fine with playing inside linebacker for the Green Bay Packers.

In the aftermath of the game, Matthews was asked point-blank, "What do you think? Do you like it?"

"I like making plays, I like being out there, so yeah," responded Mathews.

Matthews' brother, however, tells a different story.

Casey Matthews, an inside linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles and coincidentally, an opponent of his brother and the Packers this week, doesn't think Clay likes the move to inside linebacker.

Quoted by Les Bowen of Philly.com, Casey Matthews said:

"He did well, so you've got to assume he'll play more of it. I don't think he liked too much about it. He was happy to get that sack [of Jay Cutler], but that was when he was back to outside in the Packers' dime package.

"He likes getting after the passer, taking on the linemen . . . I told him to look at it this way: He's the highest-paid inside linebacker in the league. He got a laugh out of that."

So was Clay going the uncontroversial route, telling the media what he tought the public wanted to hear?

Or was Casey making presumptions that aren't necessarily true?

Clay will have to answer for himself.

"I don't think he liked too much about it."

Did he like the part where they were up 35-0 at halftime?

Two things.

1. Is Casey really betraying his brother's confidence like that? Or is this just some pre-game gamesmanship? Create a little media controversy for the opposing team? Eh, Casey isn't that clever.

2. As long as Clay keeps playing like he did against the Bears, I couldn't care less if he was happy about the move or not. In fact, maybe it's better if he's pissed off.

Clay seemed pretty happy when doing his post-game interview.

If he is unhappy, hopefully it's been articulated well to him that if he busts heads on first and second downs to get third and longs, he's going to get more quality pass rush opportunities than he has for much of the season against third and shorts.

Clay may not like playing ILB 100% of the time. But he won't have to worry about that because he won't be. He will be moved around and should be.

I would think he would like to be moved around and blitzed from every direction. You can't tell me he didn't feel good about that run blitz in which he just about destroyed the WR. He wouldn't have made that play if he was playing OLB. I also think he would like to have more opportunities to have free shots at getting to the QB.

Another thing to maybe consider. Did he get that sack at OLB because he didn't play there all game? Meaning did he get it because the LT got used to going against Perry all game and when Mathews got his sack he wasn't adjusted to his speed?

Give him a few games playing the new role he is playing and after he gets more comfortable, I think he will be liking it.

In a related story, Clay Matthews suggests that Mom always loved him more than Casey.

Well Clay seems to understand that GB needs him there for at least this year because the ILB position is a wreck. Hopefully next year they will fix the position and be able to move Matthews back to OLB.

- Clay Matthews sack total playing strictly OLB through first 8 games = 2.5.

- Clay Matthews sack total playing both positions and switching to OLB on obvious pass downs in one game = 2. (Note: He would have had two if cutler didn't move his head into Clay's arms.)

DEBATE.........OVER

Oh.....and just to add.......the second would-be-sack came out of a blitz package from the ILB spot. The same play that he destroyed the end around on.

Man sometimes I long for the old days, when wins meant more than making sure someone is happy with their role, stats whatever

The more they move Matthews around, the harder it will be to plan for him. Keep moving him around! Matthews loves rushing the QB and getting his sacks but I bet he liked standing on that podium with "The Belt" after SB45 a whole lot better. Matthews wants to win more than anything, he'll do whats best for the team.

Actually they did Cow, ran right up the gut a few times. Then again when you're having your ass handed to you like the Bears were, WHY would they even want to run up the gut? It was 35 to 0 with 11 minutes left in the 2nd quarter!!!! LMAO...Good one, keep running the ball down 35 to 0!
