Burnett Around The Ball

Rookie safety Morgan Burnett spent today's practice getting his hands on the football. Why is Atari Bigby not signing his tender again?

Clearly, rookie Morgan Burnett wants me to eat my words.

Hours after I wrote:

Yes, the team drafted Morgan Burnett. And I don’t doubt he’ll be a fine player. Someday.

Burnett was all over the practice field today making play after play on the ball.

Now, it's June. They're in shorts. We haven't seen the guy even attempt to make a tackle. But another ballhawk in the secondary would certainly be a welcome addition...

I followed both the GBPG and MJS blogs today and the kid appears to have a nose for the ball, just like he did at GT. Positive sign, regardless of the month.

Also, I like what's being said about Underwood and Lee, very positive. Here's to hoping they stay healthy....

Hahaaahhahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

I am not laughing AT anyone/thing...I am just so happy right now.

Even if burnett can't tackle, if he can smell out the ball like a bloodhound I would be more than happy with him staying back off the line and filling his belly with INTs and breakups.

Why can't we sign Atogwe, and play Burnett as a 3rd safety/4th Corner?

Sounds good to me!!

Aaron you also said a few weeks ago on Twitter that you wouldn't be shocked if Burnett took Bigby's starting spot in the beginning of the season...

I don't get this inquisition of Burnett not being able to tackle. The guy plays SS in Dom Capers' defense meaning he'll play in the deeper parts of the field closest to the endzone. I'd rather let him make an INT in that area rather than go for a tackle after a receiver makes a catch near the deep half of the field.

Amen, specially in the light of what were our D's strenghts (run stop) and weakness (pass stop)...

And, please, don't try to make a case that our run D was so stout because of the amazing SS play...

Burnett led Gtech with 95 tackles in 08 and posted 85 tackles in 09.. and they say most of those tackles came in run support... Soooo, I guess Burnett is a proven tackler at the collegiate level. At this point, there's no reason to believe he can't tackle at the pro level, too.

Color me "not worried" about Morgan Burnett's ability to tackle.. At least, there's no indications he should be any less able to tackle than any other defensive player.

Where did I say he couldn't tackle? I said we haven't seen him attempt to make a tackle. Huge difference. Simply put - we need to see him play. But hearing he's around the ball a lot is encouraging.

Aaron - I believe it was one of the 'consensus' criticisms from the draftnik community, not you.

love Morgan Burnett - he is going to be an awesome addition to the defense - he is everywhere on the field. He will make some tackles and he will for real make interceptions! Count on it

My prediction is that Burnett will make the earliest impact out of this years draft. I was reading some of the notes from OTA's about Burnett, P Lee, Underwood, and they say they have had a strong start. I was getting pumped. Then I kept reading and they said Poppinga was having a hell of a start too and will compete for the starting spot at OLB. Then my buzz died.

Why do detect some sarcasm in that remark? Thanks, even if you don't mean it. ;)
