Bryan Bulaga Passes Physical, Cleared to Begin Practicing in Limited Capacity

Packers right tackle Bryan Bulaga has passed his latest physical and is now cleared to begin practicing in a limited capacity, coach Mike McCarthy announced in his Friday morning press conference. Bulaga will come off the Physically Unable to Perform list immediately.

McCarthy had previously stated that Bulaga would be expected to be ready for the opening week of the regular season, but had not previously indicated when he expected Bulaga would be ready to start practicing again.

This is big news for the Packers, who get back a player who is one of the league's best right tackles when he's able to stay healthy. Expect the Packers to be cautious in their use of him throughout much of the rest of training camp and the exhibition season.

August 6 would have been the 9-month mark. This is impressive and great news for the Packers.

Great news indeed, and I hope Spriggs and Murphy are still getting increased reps.

Agreed, very weird about Madison, I initially thought maybe a death or illness in his family, but if he does not show at all by the end of August this becomes increasingly peculiar......He was my darkhorse to start at RT!

I had high hopes for Cole. Missing part, or all of, training camp is hampering his development. I hope he's ok

It's not irresonsible for us just fans here to speculate. At this point in time, all we have is speculation and guesses and predictions with players and the teams anyway.

It reminds me of Demetrius Underwood from many years ago, Vikings or Cowboys, I can't remember.

Or is it something like what got Chris Borland to shockingly quit/retire after his rookie season?

Or what got Michael Clark to just quit? Some people quit because they know they can get practically killed out there on any play. It's so much more physical and violent than fans think.

Or of course this guy could be on drugs & we're just keeping it quiet.

Any other possibilities you can think of?

I remember the underwood situation well. First round pick of the vikings his career was destroyed by drugs and mental illness.

I hope i'm wrong, but I would guess Madison is in a rehab clinic somewhere for drugs or alcohol.

Or

He is the whom for which it tolls?

Not helpful, I'd imagine. Probably how Spriggs and Murphy look at RT will be determinative. [Cap Savings: Bell: $1.2M; Murphy $598K; Spriggs $445K.

Based upon their separation in their draft, why is Murphy’s cap hit more than Spriggs?

This is def TGR territory, but I’m guessing Spriggs (the higher pick) had a bigger bonus spread out over more years, thus lowering his cap #.

(This is just a guess for entertainment purposes only.)

In this case it's not the cap hit we're looking at, its the savings. Spriggs has a cap hit (for 2018) of ~$1.3M and dead money of ~$900k. Murphy has a cap hit of ~$660k and dead money of ~$60k. Spriggs has more guaranteed money, but also a much larger contract. Murphy has virtually no guaranteed money so most of his cap hit turns into savings. Did I get this right TGR?

Yup. Spriggs would have $916K in dead money, Bell $550K (I assume we've paid his workout bonus) and Murphy just $60K. I think cap saving is the more important number, so I posted just those.

I suspect GB will give Spriggs 3 seasons unless he looks awful.

Very possible, but obviously we can't accuse someone without proof. I would argue that his career was starting to get towards the end, despite how good he has been, because of how many injuries he has had.

I applaud his effort to get in shape, just wouldn't push him into anything that might compromise his knee. Take the time for adding strength, and some football shape. It's great to hear him available for the season.

At this point, the ACL should be structurally sound and not meaningfully more prone to reinjury than an uninjured knee (there have been several studies on this matter). As you say, it's all about inflammation, strength, and flexibility/range of motion.

Pretty confident that GB takes a very conservative approach in these situations.

(Except for when they bullied poor Marty B into pwaying with an owie on his widdle shoulder.)

DD. The injury to his "hand" has since been proven to be a false report. The training staff and doctors are being cautious with his ankle after the surgery, that's all.

Great news on Bulaga. He has been around long enough to know not to push too hard too fast. Hopefully he stays on track for week 1.

As for Cole Madison, should we organize a search party?
Thanks, Since '61

The Madison absence is very puzzling! Whatever his situation is must be serious to possibly put his NFL career in jeopardy.

What do you guys think of Jake Kumerow?

He's getting 1st string reps and Rodgers has called him out, positively today.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/232873725036

Is he the new Brett Swain? Remember we haven't made it back to a Super Bowl since we lost Swain.

It's awfully hard to get excited about any late rd pick, UDFA, or street FA. We've heard hype and bs about them too many times before. Kumerow has maybe a 5% chance of making the team. I hate to see valuable practice time wasted on a guy who more than likely will be selling used cars a month from now.

Since the CBA has limited practice time and offseason activities so badly I'd rather see this time utilized by receivers that will make the team.

WHEW...This is GREAT news for the Packers and more specifically Rodgers and the run game. I can't wait to see Jones run the ball after week two with Bulaga and Lewis on the right side to pave the way.

Get your popcorn ready....

Great news on Bulaga. I was afraid we'd have to have his "separated at birth" twin, Randy Quaid, come in to play. :)

I didn't know about this. Injuries could be the worst nightmares for an athlete. I once heard from one athlete, he said he used to compose music and create beats when he was injured using gargeband app. The music kept him motivated to make a comeback. Well, garageband is pretty good there is no denying this fact.
