B.J. Raji Reportedly Planning To Retire From NFL

The Green Bay Press Gazette reports the former first round pick is ready to hang them up.

Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press Gazette has the scoop:

This report comes on the heels of reported interest in Raji from the Carolina Panthers. The former 9th overall pick in the draft played well in his comeback year after missing 2014 with a torn bicep muscle.

The Packers and Raji had stayed in contact this offseason with Green Bay maintaining interest in bringing back the veteran defensive lineman.

Raji has issued a statement. Money quote:

Coach Lombardi once said that “unless a man believes in himself and makes a total commitment to his career and puts everything he has into it – his mind, his body, his heart – what’s life worth to him?”  That is the approach I have taken with football since I was a 2-star high school recruit.  That total commitment was the foundation of my success at Boston College, helped me become a top ten pick in the NFL and helped me both make a Pro Bowl and win a Super Bowl.  However, when my agents Brian Murphy and Camron Hahn informed me that they had a new deal with the Packers, I knew that I would not be able to live up to Coach Lombardi’s “total commitment” standard and made this decision out of respect to this great organization.

That is shocking. That is the first thing that has surprised me this offseason regarding the Packers and Packers players.

According to:
Ryan Wood@ByRyanWood
Raji tells me he's walking away from a "very, very nice deal" from #Packers and interest from multiple playoff teams.

This definitely surprises me.

I think it might be the concussion suffered vs. Arizona at the end of last year. Perhaps Raji's had other concussions and was beginning to worry about his long-term health.

Now this is something worth reading and speculating about. about 99% sure we take a DL with our first pick now. Changes everything.

Based on where there is depth in this draft, I think a DL was most likely to be at the top of the board when the Packers picked, anyway, so I'm not sure how much it actually changes. I do believe that if there happens to be a better player at just about any position at the top of the board at that point, the Packers will take that player, though. If you're going to replace Raji, you can find one-dimensional run-stuffing DTs well into this draft and Boyd should be coming back, also.

Actually, if this is true it wouldn't surprise me much at all. It seems pretty clear that one of the biggest reasons for Raji's mediocre career is that he DOESN'T love football.

Agree 100%. Don't think he ever did. Just because you are 6'2", 335 lbs and strong doesn't mean you love football.

I have been telling people this for years. My sister lives in the same town he is from. I've talked to people who know him personally. Football was just the means to make a bunch of money. He has ALWAYS had an issue with self-motivation for playing football. High School, College, NFL. That's why he has been so inconsistent. And in no way am I criticizing him for not playing for the love of the game. I'm sure I would have done the same thing if I were in his shoes. If he's getting out healthy and with enough money to make him happy, good for him and I wish him well.

I'm surprised. Would expect the best d-lineman available is now a very distinct possibility in the first round.

It appears that GB wanted Raji back if what he said about their "very very nice deal." is true. My guess is they weren't counting on going D-line in the first.

This does make it much more likely they'll try to plug some of their other holes with some of the mid-level FA's. Maybe more than one. And at least they have a little more money to play with.

I would argue that the Packers might have been trying to make it so they didn't HAVE to do DL in the 1st.

We'd wondered how motivated he was at times. Maybe it's a health decision. Maybe he's taken care of his money and doesn't feel he needs to do something that might not be very important to him.

Either way, I do applaud him for making what many would call the "hard" decision...even if it makes the Packers need to scramble a little bit more.

I've always heard concerns about his motivation on the field. Maybe he is owning up to it. It seems he has his life in order and wasn't spending money like some athletes do. Maybe he wants to get out with a good body to live the rest of his life with. Who knows. It this is true come next season i wish him the best.

Class act IMO and I wish him the best. I don't think many of the fans have treated Raji as respectfully as they should have. I've always found him to be an intelligent player who has played some good games for GB. I'll never forget the playoff run to the SB when Raji dropped into coverage and snatched a pick six! I remember seeing his big jolly grill as he rumbled into the end zone. He's had some injury and perhaps motivation challenges but I think he was always a good teammate and Packer while on the team. He's a very solid player at his best but if his head & heart isn't in it anymore, I applaud him for leaving gracefully. Thanks BJ and best of luck! Many of the fans and your teammates will miss seeing you in the green & gold!:)

Agree with holmesmd - shocking no, surprising yes. But a solid player without the need to earn / spend gobs of money on his "posse".

Has made more money than he could modestly spend as long as he doesn't go nuts....wish him all the best luck and good health.

From a far thought Raji was a good player and a class act. As many have pointed out this draft is loaded with elite DE/DT's. I love Ragland but Pack should stay true to their board and take BPA.

I stopped being a Ram's fan when I learned that Kevin Demoff, President of the Rams, lied to my face at a season ticket holder lunch prior to the 2014 season. In an interview in LA this weekend he confirmed he and the Rams had begun work on a return to LA in 2012. He told me at the season ticket holder lunch the Rams were hoping to stay in St. Louis and were working to do so.

I like that the Packers are owned by the fans and I like the Packer tradition. I live in St. Louis and have been to Door County and like the area. There are a lot of Pack fans in St. Louis. Speaker John Ryan was on local radio recently and invited jilted St. Louis Ram fans to become Pack fans. I'm in.

Welcome aboard!

Man, what a gut punch losing your team must be. As an outsider, I was less outraged by the LA move in general because a) they originally came from LA anyway and b) the owner is paying for the LA stadium. But, still, the way sports owners hold cities hostage should be outlawed.

I'm actually glad he's moving on. He had all the physical tools in the world but did not love football. Signing him to a multi-year contract was not going to help GB. I'm glad Raji realized that - even if TT/MM had their head in the sand.

D Jones will be gone next year. There are now BIG holes in the DL.

Bring on the DT in round 1/2.

Even with D. Jones the DLine takes a huge hit when Raji is not in the picture. Another reason why I think the year will be another Defensive heavy draft (although we don't have many weaknesses).

What a clusterfrick....this will scew all the drafting planning regardless of DT's being a strong spot in this draft.

TE was an iffy pick.
The draft isn't really strong at ILB
Some great talent at OT
.... a draft really for the best value out there..with BJ
quitting...that philosophy might have to change..especially with Pernell out for 4 games.

No compensation in the draft for a player retiring

There is a trend this offseason that is getting to be quite unsettling...

We have questioned his motivation for a few seasons now, plus he's had injuries and add illness in his family and he is probably doing the best for everyone right now. Maybe he is concerned about suffering more concussions which you cannot blame him for based on everything that we have learned and are continuing to learn about blows to the head. I wish him well. With Pennel out for 4 games due to unnecessary stupidity we need some help at DT. Wouldn't hurt to pickup an experienced player via FA route. Let's see if TT brings in any help. Thanks, Since '61

Which I think should have always been in play. Who cares if the position is strong/deep. If I can pair a first round talent with (Raji)/Daniels/Pennell it should bring better results than a 3rd round talent paired with (Raji)/Daniels/Pennell.

Good luck BJ. Did want to see him another year. But now with this news, my previous hunch that TT would go OL with first pick and then because of deep draft then go DL on all but the last two rounds, may change. But then again, maybe not, as I do think TT is still looking heavily towards next year as much I wish he wouldn't.

I don't see this changing things much or at all for the Packers.

I know i'm not the only one who thought the Packers might let Raji walk in FA to begin with, so I don't see why Raji's leaving now suddenly is changing the landscape for the Packers in so many fans' eyes.

I'm sure they'll draft at the DL position, but I think they would probably have dipped there even if Raji stayed. It's supposed to be a deep draft at DL, and the Packers already favor big, athletic bodies when available.

Mostly, this means Pennel sees more time at nose and Christian Ringo gets a chance to show Packers fans what his team mates were talking about towards the end of last season.

Totally agree Oppy! I was actually quite shocked to hear that he got a very good offer from the Packers before deciding to step away. After the Guion signing I was quite sure they'd let him walk regardless.

Pennel will be suspended in the first 4 games, so that should be interesting. IMHO Guion is just a guy, so I hope Boyd and Ringo and whatever draft pick can step in. But the Packers need to draft DL high regardless of whether Raji stayed or not...

The rest of Raji's statement:

"I have played football and been defined as a football player for as long as I can remember. This off-season was the first time that I felt myself pulled in another direction and I am excited to first be “all in” with my family back home and then to explore new frontiers. I am not exactly sure what the next phase of life will entail, but I am confident that all of the lessons I learned during my NFL journey will provide a solid foundation for success.

I have enormous gratitude for Mr. Murphy, Mr. Thompson, Mr. Ball, Coach McCarthy, our entire coaching and training staff and all those in the football personnel department who make the Green Bay Packers so special. This organization not only made my NFL dreams a reality and provided financial security for me and my family for generations to come, but the Packers also helped me become the type of man who can make the decision I make today and for that I am eternally grateful.

I had the great fortune of playing with and developing friendships with some of the greatest teammates in the NFL and I thank all of them for going to battle with me every Sunday. It doesn’t seem that long ago that Clay and I came to Green Bay together as first round picks (me 17 picks ahead of Clay of course) and I am really proud of what we were able to accomplish as a defense and a team, bringing a Lombardi trophy to Green Bay.

Finally, I can’t possibly thank enough the tremendous city of Green Bay and Packers fans across the country. You embraced me from the beginning and helped Green Bay become not just a place I worked, but also a home. I know if I have the same passion, dedication and love that the Packers fans bring to Lambeau Field every game, I will find happiness and great success.

All my best,

BJ Raji"

Good luck BJ. We'll all miss you.

As for the future, I've been saying we need to focus on def front 7 for this draft and take the best available. Only exception is if there's value at the OL or TE spot. Nothing has changed.

First, I respect Raji for this decision. Family, health, have to come first. He probably could have signed one more contract and then retired or played half-heartedly. Very commendable not to game the system.

I do not think this reflects that well on TT. I have been ready to move on from Raji for years. I saw a guy with immense talent without the production, and blamed the dichotomy on a lack of motivation, including during the offseason. Now I can retire my rant about never giving Raji a contract with a lot of guaranteed money - he is an employment at will guy working in an industry that uses contracts.

TT gave the coaching staff a guy with immense talent - they just couldn't get him to play up to that talent on a consistent basis. If there is someone to blame here then it is Mike, Dom, and the DL coaches... TT got him relatively cheap the last year after he had been shopping his services on the market and got no interest. So I don't blame Ted but the coaches here...

The short answer is because I think Raji's absence was entirely foreseeable, either through accepting a better offer elsewhere or by retirement. I'm not keen on 1 year contracts, even when warranted.

I owned a pretty small business. There was little need to be at the office, so it would not be unusual for me to only see some employees every 2 or 3 weeks, while others would come in daily. [Somewhat akin to the off season for players.] If someone quit, the other employees might pitch in a bit, but usually it meant that I had to do both my own and his or her job until I hired someone. Not optimal.

As for Raji, his college coaches had trouble with him, noting that they had to kick him in the butt to motivate him. TT knew this when he drafted Raji - it was in the scouting reports. The issue never was talent: it always was whether you would get commensurate production worthy of a #9 overall pick. You can fault the coaches at Boston College and GB, but TT was aware of the issue too. Bottom line is that GB did not get the production one would want from a #9 pick.

2nd: If I hired the wrong person, I could fire him or her at any time, and with a little luck and effort I could find talented people looking for that job. In the NFL, it is a lot harder. There are contracts. A team can cut (fire) a player, but usually there is dead money involved, and the issue of a roster spot. As GMs say, God only made so many people who can play NT in the NFL. As it happens, GB has a serviceable replacement under contract in Guion, and the promising Pennel. Heck, maybe even Boyd. And he has the draft, but Raji's retirement (same result if Raji had just accepted a better offer from another team) suggests to me that TT now might be forced to draft for need. As it happens, this draft is deep at NT/ DL, but that would not have been the case in other years.

The best scenario for a GM is to give a nice long contract (rookie or 2nd) to a talented, high character player who loves football. Barring injury, the GM knows what he's got and for how long. Instead, I (not knowing Raji personally and not knowing how classy he would be) always worried about giving Raji a long term contract with big guaranteed money for fear that after he got the big signing bonus, he would be unmotivated, or eat himself out of the league, or just not work out as much as he should, especially during the offseason. Or he might retire suddenly. I'm sure that GM are very concerned about off the field issues that might get a player suspended long-term with some players (not Raji as far as I know). I give credit to Raji for announcing this before the draft - it seems that he gave as much notice as possible, and did not pull a Favre.

There is a story about Stan Smith, the tennis player. The story is that after he became #1 and had won championships, he realized that he could practice 6 days a week, be #1 in the world, and make a lot of money, or he could practice 3 days a week, be #6 in the world, make a lot of money, and enjoy life, have a family, etc. He chose the latter. That is fine: Stan was his own employer. Raji is free to make that same choice, and I can't say he did not make the right choice, but from the Packers' perspective, the former is preferable to the latter.
