Big Changes to NFL’s Referee Lineup for 2018

The league officially announced a couple big changes to its lineup of head referees for the 2018 season.

As had been previously reported toward the end of the season, Jeff Triplette is retiring from refereeing after more than 20 years in the league. He will be joined by constant fan favorite Ed Hochuli, who has also decided to call it quits and enjoy retirement from his weekly dissertations penalty explanations.

From the NFL's official announcement:

"Hochuli, 67, had worked as an NFL official since 1990, making his league debut as a back judge during a preseason game in Green Bay. He became a referee in 1992, and refereed Super Bowl XXXII in 1998 and Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004.

Hochuli gained a cult following thanks to his penchant for physical fitness and sculpted physique. "I get notoriety because I explain things, and I get notoriety because I have a decent physique, which is funny because I'm a shrimp," Hochuli said in a 2007 interview with USA Today.

Triplette started his NFL officiating career in 1996 and was promoted to referee in 1999. He served as alternate referee during Super Bowl XLI in 2007."

Hochuli has been one of the better refs in the game for some time. While he has had some high-profile blunders in his career, he has, for the most part, been a reliable referee who has always made clearly explaining his rulings a priority. He's an asset to the game and will be missed.

Triplette... well, he's been around a while. And if you've seen enough Jeff Triplette-called games over the years, you know that's about the nicest thing you can say about his refereeing capabilities. So it will be good to get some new blood who can hopefully be a more reliable referee for many years to come.

The NFL also announced who will be replacing the two long-time refs: Shawn Hochuli (Ed's son) and Alex Kemp.

If the NFL can find another “he’s giving him the business under the pile” guy, they should hire him on the spot.

I’ll miss Ed... Jeff, not at all...

Games with Ed Hochuli seemed to have more integrity. I still don't think officiating has been the same since the college - ref- strike debacle. Hopefully some of that gets fixed.
