Battle for Packers' backup QB job remains a stagnant race

-- Not a single horse has emerged in the race for the Green Bay Packers' backup quarterback job.

With Aaron Rodgers sitting out of Thursday's preseason meeting with the Baltimore Ravens, both DeShone Kizer and Tim Boyle were presented with the opportunity of extended looks against a defense that ranks as one of the best in the league.

Kizer even more so, considering he was working with the Packers' first-team offense. Head coach Matt LaFleur intended on Rodgers playing for most, if not all of the first quarter this week had it not been for back tightness that opted the team to sit him out under "precautionary" pretext.

But even with a trio of Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison -- a group slated to be the primary starters for the season-opener -- Kizer couldn't get into much of a groove. He completed just five of his 10 passes for 70 yards, but the silver lining is that he didn't turn the ball over.

Kizer didn't exactly build off of an impressive outing a week ago against the Houston Texans, in which he completed eight of his 13 attempts for 102 yards and a touchdown. But he didn't make any detrimental mistakes that cost him his spot on the depth chart either.

The biggest knock with Kizer Thursday night is that in both of his drives against the Ravens' defense, he was never able to push the ball into the end zone. His first drive ended in a turnover-on-downs -- featuring a couple of errant passes -- and his second resulted in a field goal.

Boyle failed to capitalize on Kizer's subpar performance. After two of his three completions last week went for touchdowns, he saw even more live action against the Ravens, taking the reins of the Packers' offense from the second quarter all the way into the early stages of the fourth.

In that span, he completed 12 of his 21 pass attempts for 107 yards and a touchdown. While the stat line looks acceptable on the surface, Boyle had stretches in which he looked overwhelmingly mediocre.

He opened the third quarter completing one of his first six pass attempts, and that was in the midst of a stretch in which he missed seven of eight. He did manage to find wide receiver Allen Lazard on a pair of 21 and 25-yard completions en route to Lazard's big night in which he led the team in receiving with 63 yards.

"That's the fun part about football. It's a competitive situation every play against an opponent," Boyle said after the game, via Packers.com. "When you can put a drive like that together, it's obviously fun and it's rewarding but that's why you have to do it all four quarters and score enough points to win."

At the bottom of the depth chart, Manny Wilkins finally saw his own action late in the fourth quarter much like he did last week against the Texans. He only attempted two passes, completing one of them for 14 yards.

In all likelihood, the Packers are in a horrific situation if Rodgers were to go down with an injury during the season, no matter who their backup is. But there doesn't seem to be any solace in their options behind him at the moment, with neither passer offering even the slightest sliver of optimism as saviors who could preserve what would potentially be a lost season.

They may try to pick up a released veteran or one off waivers at final cutdown.

Agreed. They blew it with their draft and a series of miscalculations-beginning during the Thompson-McCarthy era. Why they ever cut QB Taysom Hill and kept Brent Huntley is beyond me. Hill had potential to develop had great athletic skills, and could have been stated as a special teamer. This year, they aim their sights on the Missorri QB , but draft a D-Lineman #1 instead. Their draft strategy has proven faulty. They think they can outsmart other teams, or find a gem in the scrapheap, or coach up a low round pick or free agent. That leads to an 'also ran' roster of good not or great players. Now, Slim pickings out there. Here is my sleeper pick-might be available for a trade or perhaps cut by his current team: Eli Manning. Giants need WRs, and Packers have a few that show potential. Several hurdles to acquire him, including Manning's current salary is outrageous @ $11.5M. He's 38 now. Giants record was 5-11 last year, but Manning had decent stats. Our RBs don't offer an option to slow defenses down. PS: I like Rodgers, but one good shot to Rodgers 13 screws collarbone, and the Packers will not win another game. PS: This team lacks "characters" to keep things light and motivated.

The current group of free agent veteran QBs doesn't look very attractive, so the Packers only hope may be a veteran released at cutdown. I may be a pessimist, but I just don't see the light going on for either Kizer or Boyle.

Kizer played against a really good D last night and did OK. In addition he did so with an obviously impotent running a attack with receivers he doesn’t practice with regularly.

Last year he would have stunk. He has improved. I am OK with him. Boyle really disappointed until one drive verses the scrubs throwing to two players who are too good to be playing that late in a game.. I like the kid but he needs a lot more time.

I’m not convinced that we will find better than Kizer. I think the team rates him more highly than many here, and I think we need to look at the context of playing time.

This was Boyle’s chance to make it a battle and he decidedly did not show that he is ready. More concerning is that I really don’t see improvement. He doesn’t seem much more refined than last year.

Let’s be honest, with that running game, Rodgers would struggle long term. That’s a good D and those weren’t our starters, but that is important context for QB evaluation. Hill looks like he should get more looks. Dexter can’t play if he can’t catch screen passes. 4th howler drop of one of those in the last week.

"I’m not convinced that we will find better than Kizer."

That's my worry too. Adding a QB2 in August/September is a hard thing to do. In Sept 2016 the Vikings gave up a first round pick and another pick for Sam Bradford. Unless BG gets extremely lucky at cut down we are likely stuck with Kizer.

I also don’t think Kizer has been all that bad as a backup so far. That was an awfully tough D to play against, as Boyle highlighted.

Coldworld…."not that bad"???

He does not get his team into the endzone. Period. When he was Cleveland's start in 2017, Cleveland was #32 in scoring. Last year, in the opener he had to briefly come in and managed to end drives by an interception and fumble. In the season finale, he played most of the game and we scored 0 points.

Now, in his third season, he can't get into the endzone against scrubs. He completes a low percentage, for a low yards/attempt.

If I were running the Packers, I'd cut him today .

Old School -

Do you even watch football? He started as a rookie for one of the worst teams in history with absolutely NO help. Still took GB OT to beat that Browns team LOL.

Against scrubs? Dude the Ravens boast one of the top defenses in the league and he was facing their 1's the whole time. He had no turnovers (unlike Boyle who gave the Ravens the ball on their goaline which lead to a TD) and made every read correctly and got the ball out quickly. No mention of the dimes he threw to Kume and Gmo though or the screen in Dex's bread basket he dropped? Oh right you only see what you want to see.

He did march GB down the field. He missed on 2 deep shots (big whoop - probably could have put a little more air under those BUT with Earl Thomas closing over the top that is a big risk) and a penalty killed a drive to make it 3rd and 13 (still got the FG) on top of RBs running BACKWARDS to the sidelines. It also took Boyle an extra 11 attempts against lesser competition to gain a whopping 37 yds more than Kizer had. How's that for low yards/attempt?

Just delete your account man.

Good thing they aren't GMs.

That Browns offense looked a lot better when Mayfield took over.

I stand by what I said. He does not get his team into the end zone, he completes a low percentage and has a low yards/attempt.

Facts are stronger than excuses.

The entire Browns team has been rebuilt. Massive talent has been brought in on both sides of the ball. The have another new coach. Comparing then till now is just pointless and ridiculous. There isn't a QB you can name that would have been successful on that Browns team. Not ARod. Not Brady. Not Wilson. Not Mahomes. Not Brees. Not a single one. Sure, they may have been able to pull a game or 2 out of their ass because those 5 are head and shoulders above the rest of the league but that's it.

Also:
Kizer - 70 yards on 5 completions = 14 yards per
Boyle - 107 yards on 12 completions = 8.9 yards per

Kizer - 5/10 = 50%
Boyle - 12/21 = 57%

If Dex catches that bread basket screen, Kizer is 6/10 which is 60%. Now that's playing the "if" game obviously but if he makes that easy catch and the drive is extended then Kizer may have had a few more attempts, completions and yards. Kizer also faced the 1's. Boyle faced the 2's and 3's.

In other words, they both suck but Kizer is better than Boyle against better competition and as of right now gives us the better chance to win behind ARod. That being said, they both need a LOT of improvement.

Kizer has had plenty of chances to prove himself, starting with his Cleveland days. Two years in Green Bay, and he's still a "work in progress?" His time is up. Boyle shows more potential, better arm strength, pocket awareness, touch on the ball. Boyle may not be the answer at backup, but he's better than Kizer. The Packers have no one to blame but themselves for their current state at backup QB. Poor drafts and poor planing for years.The7 did not see we had few options at QB last year? Rodgers has had 4 significant injuries the last 4 years, and you don't address backup QB?? Now options are limited. I say if possible, trade to bring in 38 year old Eli Manning. {I'd take Colin Kappernick at this point ( if his skill set is not completely deteriorated). Just a series of bad front office decisions. PS: Just to manage Rodgers temperament alone, and to get a QB "guru" to elevate Rodgers game... I would have pursued Mike Holmgren as Head Coach. You say he's too old? Holmgren is 70, Bill Belichek is 69, Pete Carroll is 69. Now, starting all over with a new offense under LeFleur? It's gonna take time... which Rodgers and the Packers do not have on their side.

"Kizer has had plenty of chances to prove himself, starting with his Cleveland days."

Go learn an NFL playbook. Then go learn 3 new playbooks in 3 years and we'll see how you do.

Kizer was thrust into the starting role in Cleveland well before he was ready. Now he's learning from one of the best to ever do it and it's showing. Not everyone is a superstar day 1. I'm not even a Kizer fan but I do recognize the fact behind ARod, he's the best chance to win. Boyle this, Boyle that. Boyle isn't showing up against lesser competition - I have a hard time believing he's going to make a difference against a starting defense.

CW,
Good assessment!

Guys are extremely young with nothing but upside improvement in next several years. The Pack needs to exercise patience and with continued work and experience one or both will be decent to good QB's. I see improvement in Kizer and like you say Boyle really hasn't shown improvement yet.

Guam, you took the words right out of my mouth.

When Gutekunst became GM, he signed Rodgers to an unnecessary extension, a clear signal that he intended to win with Rodgers. We weren't going to rebuild, we weren't going to transition to the post-Rodgers era, we were going to win with Rodgers.

But he was hurt in 2018 and it affected his play. He was hurt in 2017 and missed half a season. He was hurt in 2014 and it affected his play. He missed half of the 2013 season.

I keep hearing people say that we can't waste a pick on a QB, that we need to draft a rotational pass rusher instead, and I think it's crazy. Most Important Position on the Team. If your backup has to play, he immediately becomes the most important player on the te am.

The Rams have Goff and went out and got Bortles. The Titans have Mariotta and went out and got Tannehill. The Eagles won the Super Bowl with their backup. The Ravens had Flacco and got Jackson.

We drafted Rodgers in the first round and he waited 3 years. Was that a wasted pick? At the time, people said yes, we should have used that pick to get a "weapon for Favre".

We should have taken Jackson in 2018. Since we didn't, we should have jumped at the chance to take Haskins instead of Gary.

Ron Wolf said the biggest mistake you can make in the draft is to pass on a franchise QB. I agree.

I think we're just screwed in that regard for this year, and that's on Gutekunst. I seriously, seriously hope that we don't pass up a franchise QB in the 2020 draft.

Gute didn't make that deal Old School. It was Murphy using Russ Ball as a front. IAM was not even hired as GM yet. Gute did make one brief comment early after his hiring, in the context of who had authority on player signing. He made if clear his was the final word, not Murphy's. After the Thursday night firing of McCarthy, the board move quickly to reinforce that only Packer GM had final say in personal decisions, and stripped Murphy of any decision making in the front office. Unlike you, I'm not in love with Jackson. He is a now player with limited ceiling for the future as he puts more miles on his legs. It will be interesting to see how the rest of his division adjusts. Right now I don't see him as a franchise cornerstone.

Boyle not as sharp as last week but the Baltimore defense blitzed and was aggressive also...so it’s an adjustment for him. Let’s not forget he has not played in a regular season game. Kizer has played a season and a half of regular NFL games and was throwing to the starters.
Boyle had a Kumerow drop and an OT hold that thwarted a drive yet he still lead an impressive 84 yard drive and threw another TD pass. He has three TD passes in 3 quarters of football which is still impressive. Boyle does have the pocket presence and passing skills to play QB effectively in the NFL as he gets more playing time and opportunity. I have no problem with Boyle being the back up QB on this Packers team with the skill set and potential he has shown.

So they were aggressive with their twos through 4s against Boyle and so we should give him a break? They were aggressive versus Kizer with their ones.

If one is ready to play one has to deal with that. Your argument simply emphasizes that Boyle isn’t ready and suggests that Kizer should be given more credit.

What last night and your argument both show us is that Boyle is a lot less ready than Kizer.

So calling out racism and social injustice makes him a piece of shit? It's just 100% perfectly fine for white cops to murder black men in cold blood on camera without consequence? Lol ok. You and that kind of mentality are exactly what is wrong with America today. That man has donated more of his salary and personal time to helping improve impoverished communities than you will ever make in your life. What have YOU done for YOUR community lately? Hmm?

Oh let me guess - "he disrespected the flag." FoH with that. The flag is merely a symbol. What's more important - the symbol, or the actual FREEDOM it is supposed to represent? Go learn the blatantly racist history of the national anthem and get back to me. But of course mainstream media hyped up the "disrespecting the flag and those defending our freedom" narrative to distract from the real issue being brought up, and all the lemmings ate it hook line and sinker. Newsflash - OCCUPATION DOES NOT EQUAL DEFENDING FREEDOM OR VICTORY. In fact, not 1 single American freedom or right is being threatened from anywhere except the good old US Government passing more and more laws every single day taking away your "rights" while you just blindly bend to "authority." It is absolutely disrespectful and blasphemous to compare the "I"m just following orders" troops of today invading and occupying the Middle East in an effort to accomplish a political agenda to the Heroes that gave their blood and their lives in WW1 and WW2. The United States is not being attacked - so what are they defending? I know what they're defending - poppy and oil fields.

Since I know you won't do the research, I'll help you out. The star spangled banner is a song written that describes a battle in which slaves were offered their freedom in exchange to go to war. A battle which they lost. My guess is you've never heard the 3rd stanza though. Most people haven't. They simply believe what they're told to believe.

"And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave."

Knowledge is power. Now, back to football.

Not only that, but anyone who flies the confederate flag shows far more disrespect to the US flag than kneeling. If I recall from history confederates shot American boys cold. Those boys were the US military. They were conscripted to honor the constitution and defend the soil. They were shot. That confederate flag should be illegal to be flown, and it can sit in the museum. It is the ultimate disrespect to the US flag. One flag represents the constitution the other descecrated the constitution. Whoever cares about kneeling, should first take up a more important disgrace.

Kap wasn’t very good when he was playing regularly. It’s been about 3 years since he’s taken a snap in an NFL game. He’s done.

Even if he wanted to come back, which he doesn’t he is much more trouble than he is worth. Don’t want him, don’t need him, he can’t help because he can’t play.

If the Packers did sign him that would probably be enough to push me over the edge for watching the NFL at all. I’m pretty close now given the declining state of the league.

In 69 games he had 72 TDs, 30 INTs, QBR around 90. He also has playoff and SB experience. I'd say that's quite a bit better than either Kizer or Boyle. And for the record, he's been staying in excellent football shape. Still working out and doing drills with his friends in the NFL and athletes from other sports.

He is not unemployed for lack of skill or experience. He is unemployed because of politics. He is blacklisted for exposing a vicious truth in America.

Fun fact: he was born right here in Milwaukee.

Kneeling during the national anthem may be disrespectful but it is not a criminal offense like AP or others who are currently in the league have committed. If Kap was any good he would have been signed by one of the 32 GMs.

PED, abuse, criminal charges - those things can be swept under the rug and quickly forgotten. Calling out the entire justice system and blatant racism in America on a national stage cannot. Even more so when the media hypes up a bullshit narrative to drown the actual issues that need attention.

Kneeling or not standing for a national anthem is NOT disrespectful. We ALL have that RIGHT. That's the whole point of FREEDOM - being able to express yourself however you want without consequence or discrimination. Claiming someone is being disrespectful for expressing the FREEDOM granted to them by those that gave blood is just disrespectful to the ones who sacrificed in the 1st place!!! If we aren't able to express our FREEDOM then what the fuck did they die for??????

This kind of discussion happens when Front Office does not plan or draft correctly. Now, the Packers look desperate for help. Let's look back two years ago when the Packers had a slightly older QB/"athlete" they looked at as a backup QB... who showed some interesting 'Steve Young' type traits. Speed, grit, strength, got them into the end-zone, strong arm but not 100 % accurate but decent touch... and appeared to have a bit of Brett Favre tenaciousness. He won the preseason backup QB battle, but the Packers thought they could outsmart everyone and slip him through waivers onto the developmental squad. So they kept Brent Huntley over Taysom Hill, because Huntley had been through two of Mike McCarthy's "Quarterback School Camps" and "they had 'invested' in Huntley." I'd take Hill over what we have now. And... we still don't have a solid backup QB.
