Around the NFC North – Week 4

With the Chicago Bears seizing the early lead in the NFC North, the teams continue to jockey for early position in the division race.

Chicago Bears

Ladies and gentleman, I present to you the NFC North division-leading Chicago Bears.  While it is hopefully a short stint leading the division, the Bears sit atop the division for the first time since 2013 thanks to a come from behind victory in Arizona this past Sunday.

The Bears quickly fell to a 14-0 deficit against the Cardinals, but the defensive unit went on absolute lockdown as the team rallied for a 16-14 victory in the final minutes of the game.  Trailing 14-3 at halftime, the Bears defense opened the second half with four straight takeaways (three interceptions, one fumble recovery) and put their offense in position to score a touchdown and knock through two field goals for the win.

With the Bears offense still sputtering with Mitch Trubisky under center, the defense has been lights out in securing wins over the last two weeks against the Cardinals and Seahawks.  The Khalil Mack sweepstakes appears to be paying off as does first-round draft pick Roquan Smith.  It pains me to say this week after week, but if the Bears offense and Trubisky can find a rhythm, they could be one dangerous team moving forward.

This Sunday, the Bears welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Soldier Field.  After starting out red hot with Ryan Fitzpatrick under center, the Bucs are coming off a close loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football.  With the return of Jameis Winston from suspension, mum has been the word on who will be under center this weekend for the Bucs but it is hard to imagine them moving on from Fitzpatrick after his performances in week one and week two.

I’ll be very interested to see how the Bears handle the suddenly potent Bucs when they clash this Sunday.

Minnesota Vikings

Following their come from behind tie against the Packers the week prior, the Vikings headed into their home matchup against the Buffalo Bills as 17 point favorites.  After being completely dismantled and dominated by the Bills by a final scored of 27-6, the Vikings became the first 17 point or greater favorite to outright lose a game in the NFL since 1995.

In a game that was 27-0 at halftime and all but over at that point, the Vikings offense had only mustered two first downs and 46 yards on offense.  Two strip sacks of quarterback Kirk Cousins put rookie Josh Allen and the Buffalo offense in prime position for easy scores on the Vikings defense.  The Vikings offense still looked lifeless in the second half of the game, only showing some signs on life with a garbage-time touchdown pass from Cousins to tight end Kyle Rudolph.

Was the embarrassment at the hands of the Bills solely the case of the Vikings looking ahead to their Thursday night matchup against the Los Angeles Rams?  Or are bigger issues looming in Minnesota?  These questions obviously remain to be answered and I don’t know if they will be when the Vikings take on one of the hottest teams in the NFL in the 3-0 Rams.

Detroit Lions

After a putrid start to their season through their first two games, the Lions showed a pulse on Sunday Night Football in their 26-10 victory against the New England Patriots.  The national TV audience heard loud and clear that the Lions weren’t dead when the Lions defense came out and stifled Tom Brady and the Patriots offense.  Moving out to a quick 13-0 lead in the game and a 13-3 lead at the half, the Lions had this game in their control from the start and continued to hold the Patriots offense in check through the end of the game to seal the victory.

In the win, Lions running back Kerryon Johnson became the franchise’s first 100 yards rusher since Reggie Bush topped the mark in 2013.  Johnson’s 101 yards on 16 carries helped the Lions offense control the game and allow Matt Stafford plenty of passing opportunities.

Week three in the NFL proved that this is truly a week to week league.  For the Lions, it was definitely an ideal time for them to be facing the reeling Patriots whereas the Packers, Bears and Vikings will get their shot at Bill Belichick and company later in the year when the Patriots will most likely be firing on all cylinders.

This Sunday, the Lions will travel to Texas to take on the Dallas Cowboys.  With both teams sitting at 1-2 on the young season and looking to get back on track to .500 football, I would expect a solid showing from each team.

If the bearsstillsuck had a QB, I'd be worried. The queens are overrated, they will get embarrassed tom night. The Packers? I have no clue what to expect.

10-6. Sneak into the playoffs. Save Mike McCarthy's job in the process. And then lose in the Divisional Round. Same script, different story.

Unfortunately, it doesn't really matter how the teams do, the outcomes of all the games will come down to who the refs (and the NFL) want to win. That becomes apparent pretty early in every game when the penalty flags start to fly, especially on key plays. This week the Bears, Rams and Cowboys are all NFL favorites so they'll be given every opportunity to win.

And the NFL wonders why they're losing fans.

I'm not convinced that there is any conspiracy going on with the NFL and the refs. More likely a case of confused refs trying to enforce a suite of confusing and convoluted rules. But you are correct Lare. The penalties, especially at key moments, are killing the game and my interest in watching the fiasco is waning accordingly. The NFL was losing fans anyhow and now they have found a way to lose them faster. Pretty dumb.

I dont see a conspiracy either. What I see is ineptitude in the NFL headquarters. Asking refs to enforce rules that no one understands.

Right now because we cannot get our act together, all teams have a chance to win the North. We need to get it together fast.

Down the road I expect to see some backing off of the strict enforcement of the RTP rule. Just like last year on the catch rule and this year on lowering the helmet rule, the refs and the NFL will have made their point. Also some pass rushers will back off a bit on any wild abandon when rushing. I noticed that the fines are not going on the players who get the penalty but are not as “unnecessary” as they had been in the past.
I think that our team is still adjusting to new players and new schemes. Both on defense and on offense there have been changes and new players. Aaron has been hurt and the line has not been as stout as it has been in the past.

I think there is huge loss for Vikings in losing Everson Griffen. I believe they will not overcome that loss easily...

Agreed there.

Mitch T still has some growing up to do. He looks great on scripted offense, but once it’s up to him to read defenses and make decisions he still looks lost. He has a lot of physical talent, though, so as the mental game becomes easier he could get dangerous, and the Bears running game and defense can carry the team until that happens.

The Lions are a team that always looks like they’re on the verge. If the running game is clicking that takes pressure off Stafford and lets them finally start controlling the tempo of games.

The Vikings are extremely balanced, and are still the team to beat in the North.

This could be one of the toughest NFC divisions this year, and I would not be surprised if it produces either 2 or 3 playoff teams, depending on the strength of the NFC South this year.

Seems to me Chicago emptied the play book in GB during the first half. In the second half when it was up to Trubisky to read the defense, they shut down. Their defense played a great first half, but were somewhat exposed by a one legged Rodgers in the 2nd. They've played two pretty poor offenses since then, so I believe the jury is still out, as to how good they really are. I agree with Croat, Minnesota will have a hard time replacing Griffen, and I think the Rams will dominate them tonight.
I think the Cowboys pass rush will be enough for them to earn a win against the Lions, if they can find any semblance of offense.
The Packers will have their hands full with a Buffalo team, that got a jolt of confidence last week. They need to start faster than they have in games 1 and 3, and put some doubt back in to the Bill's players. If the Pack starts slow again this week, things could get ugly.

If the Packers ever needed a win then they definitely have to win on Sunday.

What about those L.A. Rams. Yikes!! We have to play them the 2nd half of the season. Cross that road when we get to it. Lets just win Sunday!!

I do want to see more 3 Tight End sets.
If those Tight Ends can roll off their blocks , then I believe defenses would back off the QB pressure on Aaron Rogers and let him heal up.

I would like to see Marcedes Lewis more involved with catching passes.
