Around the NFC North
News from around the NFC North and the defending champion Green Bay Packers and their rivals the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings.

Authors Note: Our friend and fellow writer Adam Czech was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer last week. Adam wrote a must read story on his personal battle to beat this terrible disease. If you have not read his story, My Real Life Hail Mary, it is must-read, and can be found here. Good Luck To Adam and his family; literally our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Chicago Bears: The Bears dropped an overtime heart-breaker at home this past week to a poor San Francisco 49’ers team all but killing their slim playoff hopes. Yet it was the manner in which the Bears lost that was so disheartening. The normally automatic Robbie Gould missed a chip shot field goal that would have won the game only to see the Niners complete a 71-yard bomb to seal the victory shortly afterward. It was a crushing defeat for Bears fans who were talking playoffs just days earlier.
Key Rankings: The Bears are the 20th ranked offense in the NFL based on average yards per game, and only 24th in scoring offense.
Key Injuries: 14 players were on last week’s injury report and many remain on the current list including Martellus Bennett (ribs), Matt Forte (ankle) and Jay Cutler (head). None are expected to miss time. WR Kevin White remains out with a broken foot.
Vegas odds: The Bears opened as 1 favorites against the Washington Redskins at home but since moved to 3.5 after the ‘Skins dropped a home gimmee against the Cowboys.
Last Week: Lost at home to SF
This Week: At home vs. Washington
Season Record: 5 - 7
Place in NFC North: 3rd
Detroit Lions: With a three game win streak tucked safely in their pockets, and feeling good about themselves after finally beating their old nemeses the Packers in November on the road, the Lions put up 17 straight points against the Packers in just the first quarter. It was 20 straight before the Packers scored. But the Lions being the Lions lost to the Packers on a walk-off Hail Mary with no time left effectively putting themselves out of playoff contention.
For a team that won eleven games last season the current mess was certainly not anticipated. Pity poor Sports Illustrated’ Doug Farrar for picking the Lions in the pre-season to win the NFC North and Chris Burke for spotting them second. Note: Farrar also chose the Falcons to win the NFC South, Seahawks in the West, and Eagles in the East. Just goes to show the ‘experts’ have hiccups too.
With Martha Ford glaring down from her private box her off-season to-do list certainly now includes, if it didn’t previously, replacing the entire Lions coaching staff. She hopes to get it right this time as opposed to merely re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic as has been done in the past.
Good luck with that.
Key Rankings: The Lions defense is the second worst team in the NFL when it comes to the opponents QB rating (103.5), and are fifth worst in scoring
Key Injuries: WR Lance Moore is still battling ankle injuries.
Vegas Odds: The Lions are 2.5 point underdogs to the Rams, since moved to 1.
Last Week: Lost at home to the Packers
This Week: At St. Louis Rams
Season Record: 4 - 8
Place in NFC North: 4th (last)
Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings will have precious little time to lick their wounds from the 38 – 7 pounding that they endured at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks in Minnesota this past Sunday. They head to the Valley of the Sun for a Thursday night meeting with the current number-two NFC seed Arizona Cardinals.
After the game All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson was quoted as saying that the Vikings were out-coached by Seattle’s Pete Carroll and his staff.
The Vikings are technically still tied with the Packers for first place but lose out to the Packers in the tie-breaker (head-to-head) for playoff seeding.
Key Rankings: The Vikings face the NFL’s number one offense in the Cardinals (419.5 YPG average). The Vikings running game has fallen from the top spot to number five averaging 136.8 YPG. The Cardinals defense is ranked fourth allowing only 316.8 YPG, and is tied with the Vikings for the fourth best scoring defense allowing an average points per game of 19.3.
The Vikings will need their defense to show up this week against the NFL’s top scoring offense (31.8 PPG). Arizona is the only team in the NFL boasting a top five offense and defense.
Key injuries: The Vikings defense may again be without key contributors Linval Joseph, Harrison Smith and Anthony Barr.
Vegas odds: The Vikings are 7.5 point underdogs on the road.
Last Week: Lost to Seattle at home
This Week: At Arizona
Season Record: 8 - 4
Place in NFC North: Tied for first
Green Bay Packers: With the Vikings graciously accommodating the Green Bay Packers by putting up a clinker at home to the Seahawks, the Packers move into the third spot in the playoff picture. If the season ended today the Packers would open at home hosting the defending NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks who they defeated earlier this season.
Who do you cheer for on Thursday night Packers fans?
Should the Vikings lose it would give the Packers a full game lead with 4 games (3 ½ technically) to play. But with the Pack playing two teams with losing records and hosting Minnesota in the final game of the season they hold their fate in their own hands. (Note; dispelling a popular cliché, they do not hold their destiny in their own hands, as destiny is defined as an event that will necessarily happen in the future).
However if the Packers hope to earn a bye (second seed) they would probably have to win out - which translates to a win over both the Vikings and Cardinals – and have the Cardinals lose at least one more game. A tied record of 12 – 4 between the Cards and Packers would then see the Packers take the tie-breaker (head-to-head competition) for the second seed.
So Packers fans, how do want Thursday’s game to go? A Cardinals or Vikings win?
Key Rankings: The Cowboys come into Lambeau Field with the number five ranked pass defense allowing just 222.4 YPG. The Packers defense is the sixth stingiest in the league allowing an average of only 19.8 points per game. The Packers offense in an anemic 22nd in total yards, 23rd in passing but 12th in scoring. The Dallas offense is the league’s fourth worst averaging only 18.6 points and is 5th worst in passing offense.
Key Injuries: QB Tony Romo will again miss the game against the Packers (shoulder) and presumably journeyman Matt Cassel will again be under center. CB Morris Claiborne and TE Jason Witten are also injured but expected to play. The Packers are banged up at several positions but maybe none more than the offensive line where Bryan Bulaga and T.J. Lang missed the Lions game, C Corey Linsley was reinjured and LT David Bakhtiari also was forced to leave the game but later returned. WR Ty Montgomery (ankle) remains injured with his game day status unknown and Damarious Randall who also missed the Lions game returned to practice on Tuesday. Andrew Quarless is eligible to be activated off of IR and rumor is that he will suit-up against the Cowboys.
Vegas Odds: The Packers opened as 5 point favorites at home vs. the Cowboys but the line has since moved to 7.
Last Week: Won at Detroit
This Week: At home vs. Dallas
Season Record: 8 - 4
Place in NFC North: Tied for First

I would love Vikings to lose against Cardinals... As I explain, I think the decision game for the Packers should be the one against Cardinals. If they win, they might steel No. 2. If not they would grab No. 3 and WCG against Vikings or whatever other team that would be No 6 seed. I think Seattle will be No 5 seed and will heading to the Carolina for divisional round, where I expect them to win over Panthers. As I expect Packers to win against Arizona in divisional round and host the NFCCG at Lambeau!

I am smelling a Packers/Seattle rematch in the first round of the playoffs. Not my preference because I think that Seattle and Arizona are solid teams. Unless we find some answers (other than Hail Marys) for this offense, it probably won't matter. Still, if the guy that everyone slammed as being too slow and unable to get separation - Richard Rodgers - can have a stellar night, maybe there is hope.

That's not likely Razer. Seattle's remaining schedule is no cakewalk, but it's easier than the Vikings. And while it's mathematically possible for Seattle to win the NFCW, it's very unlikely.
That means Seattle will probably be the 5 seed with MIN being 6. GB being the 3. Or GB is the 5 (loss at AZ and win other 3) and SEA is the 6.
Much more likely that Seattle plays either MIN or NFCE winner in round 1.

Don't worry. Looking ahead at the schedule of the 4 teams involved it's very unlikely. Except in the NFCCG at home. And if that's it bring it on.

McCarthy has said that Lacy has had a really good week of practice, he seems "Rejuvenated" is what MM said. (Have we heard that one before?) Whatever happens from this point on is going to start with Lacy. Before Lacy running the ball in December was like playing MD Jennings at Safety, it just wasn't working! The last 2 years it was and did work. Lacy must get it going.
EVERYONE on this offense has struggled this year but no matter what, the Packers need an effective Lacy to do anything. I hate to beat a "Dead Horse" but Lacy has gained 85 yards or move the 4 times he's had at least 15 carries. I don't give a damn if he has 4 yards in 6 carries, AP starts games like that all the time. My point is if given the chance, Lacy WILL get his yards if they give him the ball. Without Lacy this offense will continue to struggle.
I'm losing hope of seeeing Montgomery on the field this year again. With that said I think Abby can help, Quarless might help, but Cobb and Adams are seeing one on ones all game long and HAVE to start to win. If not it won't matter WHO the Packers play in the playoffs if thy don't start to win their one on ones.
The defense has kept this team in just about every game. Even the disaster in Carolina the defense came through in the end to give the offense a chance. If the Detroit win didn't jump start these guys hearts nothing will I'm afraid. GO Pack!

Yes if the Hail Mary did not rejuvenate the entire team nothing will. I think it does but Dallas will show up too. After waiting years to play Dallas at home I hope that Packers still have a big chip on their shoulder as well. Go Pack Go

Are you talking regular season? Dallas is still whining about the non catch from last year. Anyway it wasn't a game deciding play and they shouldn't even have been playing in GB. They got a gift last year against the lolions, so STFP Jerry. Pack rolls in this one.

Yes regular season. Thanks for bringing up "catch". Amazing they are still whining considering all the bogus calls that have gone their way over the years, in Dallas. Now I'm even more riled up and hope Pack plays out of their minds this week.

"Yes if the Hail Mary did not rejuvenate the entire team nothing will."
I thought the way they dominated at MIN and regained control of their fate would translate into continued improved play...and then we got the Chicago debacle.
I'd like to believe that the light will go on for this team and that we'll start to see more consistent play and productivity out of the offense. The second half against the Lions helps to build that hope. But until this team puts out sustained effort and can score points regularly, they're going to scuffle. I suspect Sunday will be another scuffle game...I think they win, but it won't be pretty.

I have the same feeling but I'm still hoping thta game like they had in 2010 is in them. "That Game" in 2010 was against the Giants, and they didn't lose again unti week 13 the following year.
It goes back to Veteran leadership and this team just doesn't have much. Cobb needs to step up, put in extra work and bring Adams with him. If those two turn it around we have a COMPLETELY different team.
I think without a doubt we can say the promotion Van Pelt received to coach the WR and QB's has failed horribly. This is his first year spliting the duties of QB's and WR's. Keep him at coaching QB's and QB's only because both positions have suffered.
AZPack
December 10, 2015 at 07:47 am
I have no problem w/ the veteran leadership. You don't think Peppers and Raji weren't showing that when the got into it w/ Clinton-Dix on the sidelines? I'm very sure Rodgers is seen as a leader by everyone on offense and I bet even Jordy, even tho injured is being a leader on the sidelines.
Sorry Nick, but you also cannot say tht Van Pelt has failed. You simply don't know enough to make that kinda statement. Your using anecdotal evidence at best to base that on and anecdotal evidence is crap. Again sorry to point this out, but only the players, other coaches and personnel people actually KNOW anything substantive to make a determination one way or another.

'You don't think Peppers and Raji weren't showing that when the got into it w/ Clinton-Dix on the sidelines?'
One interesting thing is since that incident on the sidelines, Clinton-Dix has played very, very well...
Perhaps it was the leadership that took charge and let him know he needs to be better and he took it to heart.

Right now the Packers fate is in their hands. If they want to win the North, they just have to win. If they want to take the 2 seed which could be the most beneficial thing to the team, they have to win out, beating Arizona, and need 1 more loss by Arizona.
Arizona's next 4 games are vs Minnesota, @ Philadelphia, vs Green Bay, vs. Seattle
Minnesota's next 4 games are @ Arizona, vs. Chicago, vs. NY Giants, @ Green Bay
Right now I am thinking I would rather see Minnesota win against Arizona, because Arizona's next 3 out of 4 games are at home. I would like it if Green Bay could get that 2 seed, and if Green Bay wins out, they would get the 2 seed if Arizona loses 2.

The queens are cooked. Teams know the recipe for beating them. Stop the child beater because Teddy B sucks. The queens may even miss the playoffs.
AZPack
December 09, 2015 at 10:24 am
Its almost a given the Queens make the playoffs. Really the NFC playoff teams are relatively set w/ a month left in the season. It highly unlikely TB or ATL win out and get into the conversation. Right now it looks like Carolina, AZ, Packers, Seattle, Minn and the "winner" of the NFCLeast.
I just don't see a team beyond that capable of mounting a late season charge. My guess is Minn makes it as the 6th seed. They are fading, while Seattle is surging (not a good thing but reality).
Its possible the Packers get the #2 seed, but it seems like a pipedream, even if they win out. AZ is unlikely to lose to Minn and may not have anything to play for wk 17 vs Seattle.
RCPackerFan
December 09, 2015 at 10:29 am
I tell you what though. Week 17 could be very, very exciting... Packers play Minnesota, and could be playing for the division. Arizona will be playing Seattle which could be playing for the 2 seed.
Could make for a very exciting end to the season.

December 09, 2015 at 10:30 am
queens 8-8. child beater calling out the coach publicly , QB is below average, o-line can't protect. D is banged up. TB gets to 9-7.
AZPack
December 09, 2015 at 10:45 am
That MIGHT be possible, but I just don't think TB is ready for a playoff push like that w/ a Rookie QB. They do have a favorable schedule playing NO, StL, Chi and the Panthers. They will have to win 4 games in a row to get there, and unless Carolina losses b4 then they will be playing for an undefeated record.

Bears and Packers win this week, Lions and Vikes lose.
Packers and Doughboys are almost mirror images of each other: offenses that have lost key players, OL that have not lived up to the hype, underachieving players at skill positions. Both Defenses have carried these teams at times. I expect a low-scoring game...weather might be less than ideal. Packers 20, Doughboys 17.

Enjoy the games? What team and fan base have you been watching the last 5 weeks? With every podcast I listen to lately, I'm discovering I'm in the minority of Pack fans who actually stay WITH the Lions game from start to finish AND felt somewhat positive before the 4th quarter about what I was seeing given the circumstances. Fans left the Bears game before it was over & we had a shot up to the clock stopping in that one too.
Where have all the #intedwetrust folks gone in the Packer blogoshere lately? They're the ones folks like Taryn are facing with these 'shut up and enjoy the game' comments (not saying you are one but that's typically what they've said to me in the past when I criticize this regime including my own family) and seeing people go 'We should still be able to win the division and even if we lose in the first round it should be a successful year' BS. Pointing out the fact this team constantly struggles to react quickly to needed changes & FIX things permanently, be it in the drafts where TT refuses to get a RB, safety, DT, or ILB for various years or in game where MM continues the 'we're fine' mantra as we lose big games or go on stretches like this without making simple adjustments is not something that should be shouted down because it IS a very valid point.
Making the playoffs and wins in this division don't mean anything anymore in today's NFL. Look at the NFC East. The freaking Seahawks won their division in 2010 w/a 7-9 record for crying out loud and someone in the NFCE is likely to do that again. Dominating the sad Lions/Vikings/Bears shouldn't be the measuring stick. We're better than that and have talent to win postseason games and SHOULD have more than 1 SB by now, wouldn't you say? Pointing out the fact this regime is becoming another Ron Wolf 'fart in the wind' as we waste away ANOTHER amazing QB's career should get louder, not shouted down. The terrible 80's are gone forever. We should be demanding like Patriot fans who watch their team do more with less every YEAR.

'There are Super Bowl contenders and their are playoff teams...'
The NFL is different now. Any team in the playoffs can make it to the super bowl. Yeah some teams squeak in, and really aren't going to do much once they are in the playoffs. But all it takes is for the team to get hot during the playoffs.
This has been going on for a quite a while.

The biggest ? remaining is the passing game and receivers who can't get open.
Eddy can get motivated.
OLine can get healthy
D has kept us in games all year. I'm not quite sure why they are not even better.
I don't know why an offensive coordinator would not be a good play caller. But I think the problem is deeper. It takes MM too long to adjust and change. Sorry, I've never been a big MM fan. And I still blame him mostly for last years loss for not fixing special teams earlier. That might be a bit unfair as it was ultimately Bostick who didn't listen to instructions. But he kept Slocum TOOOOOO long.

Man... take a look at that picture of Eddie from last year. He is NOT in good shape this year. It's no one's fault but his own.

Well, I didn't learn much about the Packers from reading these posts today. Really, I didn't learn anything about the Packers. I did learn that Tayrn is a girl (I always thought it was just an icon he liked). Yawn.

Um, Eddie lacy is out of the doghouse. Montgomery was at practice. The only guy held out was Cory linsley.(is that spelled right?)

Dangerously close to having an irreversible troll infestation.
I have personally seen one of the current posters here destroy a Packers message board single-handedly about a decade ago.
People need to learn to not feed the troll. I'm not even talking about Cow.

They can afford to do that with those corners and safeties they have.
Our receivers and Rodgers will have to bring their A game. Pre-snap and post-snap adjustments will be critical.
