Anthony Johnson Has The Potential To Be An Early Contributor For the Packers

The Packers have an opening starting spot available at safety

It's not usual for a seventh-round pick to have a realistic path to see the field early in the NFL, expect for special teams. But Anthony Johnson Jr. may be an outlier for the Green Bay Packers this year. Considering how much experience he has, his decent floor, and the depth at the position, it's not absurd to think the defensive back might end up starting games opposite Darnell Savage by the end of his rookie season.

The safety position is arguably a need since last year, when both Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage were entering contract years and there was no long-term plan behind them. However, the Packers decided to keep things as they were, exercising Savage's guaranteed fifth-year option of $ 7.9 million for 2023. The performance level last year was bad, and Rudy Ford was probably the best option. Savage and Ford are back now, and Amos was let go, so the need was even more pronounced. In free agency, they have added Jonathan Owens, a former Houston Texans starter, and Tarvarius Moore, who was mostly a special teamer for the San Francisco 49ers. Owens has a chance to begin the season as the starter, but it isn't a sure thing. The position also wasn't addressed in the draft until the final minutes of the process, when the Packers finally took Johnson with the 242nd overall pick.

And, according to defensive coordinator Joe Barry, there's no definition about who will be the second starting safety.

"That's the great thing about the offseason," Barry said. "We get that nine week period where we get to get our hands on the guys, and we are in that fifth week right now. We've got some new faces in that room, but that's what OTAs are for, obviously training camp is for, but we are in the beginning stages of that process of finding that out."

Why can Anthony Johnson be impactful?

The first argument is pure football experience. It's not normal for a rookie to have played so much football. Anthony Johnson was thrown into the fire right away at Iowa State, playing seven games as a freshman. As he stayed there for five seasons, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility because of covid, Johnson ended up playing 57 college football games, which included 54 starts. Throughout his career, he had 164 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, three sacks, 28 passes defended, and two interceptions (both during his final year). He was a cornerback for most of the time, making a full-time transition to safety in 2022, which explains why he wasn't highly drafted, but still can be a good NFL player. In his only season as a full-time safety, he started all 12 games and received a second-team all-conference award. His NFL.com draft profile views him as a fifth-round prospect.

He obviously has a lot of technique points to improve on, but there are positive signs to lean on. According to Tony Pauline's scouting report at Pro Football Network, Johnson is a "tough, run-defending safety who flashes ability against the pass. Aggressive, punishes opponents, and delivers crushing blows. Immediately diagnoses plays, works hard to defend passes, and fires upfield against the run." Those are all important characteristics to play alongside Darnell Savage in the secondary. Pauline mentions Johnson doesn't have impressive athleticism and that "he needs to brush up on his coverage techniques, but has enough ability to be used as a zone safety." That's exactly what his role will be.

Pro Football Focus loves Johnson. According to the analytics-driven website, "while Johnson proved reliable on the outside, his move to safety was a resounding success in his senior season".
"The biggest riser on PFF's big board, Johnson is durable and versatile while still occasionally showcasing his skills as a former cornerback. His 3,159 defensive snaps played are the fifth-most of any Power Five defensive back since 2018. The vast majority of those snaps came against high-powered Big 12 offenses, yet he still carried a 90.0 career coverage grade."

Anthony Johnson is probably not good enough to play as a single-high safety, but the Packers will basically never ask him to do so — at least not until he's fully developed. And what he can do, with his ability in the run support, enough skills to play deep half, and maybe occasionally as a slot corner, those are all things might excel at, with potential to provide much more value than a normal seventh-round pick would.

I know many were anticipating some work for Douglas at S. Moving a player with success at CB to S made sense to me...except Stokes still has to return to form from some challenging injuries.

Yet the CB to S idea is alive and well with AJJ. And thanks to the Cyclones, the move was made last year with solid success. The NFL learning curve for the young S may be steep...but Johnson has shown to be a quick study. His football character, intelligence and leadership are solid intangibles too.

Very interested watching him this summer!

If he starts at all this year, it will be another notch on Gutes 2 best drafts.

Two best drafts? Which drafts are those? Haven't really had a great one yet, had some stinkers.

He’s described as a violent tackler, which is great, but is he a secure, reliable tackler? I have felt for awhile now that the CBA’s restrictions on “live” hitting make it very difficult for a young player to IMPROVE his tackling. So, if he’s already steady in that skill, great!
He’s experienced, and thus “instinctive”, right?
If he is a good, willing tackler and is assignment sure, he’s got what GB needs!
Looks like GB has plenty of options at safety, so much so that, regardless of draft status, Savage better step it up or he’ll find himself on the sidelines.
Can’t wait to watch these talented young men battle it out!
GPG!

His tackling is possibly his best asset. He’s got some issues with speed, he’s not all that technically refined and has a tendency to get grabby in the slot in coverage. He’s got ball skills, he does have the ability to diagnose plays, particularly closer to the line, he’s very physical for a guy his size, but he has a tendency to over run that often goes with that. It looks great when he hits, awful when he takes himself out of the play.

I think he has the tools, but my concern is that he’s a bit like Desmond Bishop in that the hard thing will be to get coaches to trust him to not blow plays early while he learns to balance risk and aggression. I think he is going to take time to make a regular impact on D, but that he has a chance to grow into a real player that exceeds his draft position.

Camp is there to prove otherwise. He should have a shot, I think STs will help him potentially, but I think that he may be more developmental than many seem to think.

I'm right with you though. Looking forward to the competition in camp for positions, and to see all the talent added to this Packers team.

There's no doubt Anthony Johnson Jr. is a willing tackler. He's got the stuff.

If you subscribe to PFF, they did a special feature piece on Anthony Johnson Jr. explaining why he was climbing up PFF's draft board. I cannot believe we got him with Pick #242. That's just great work by Gutekunst & staff, along with a little luck thrown in there.

Nonetheless, check out that piece - complete with video breakdowns, etc.

There has to be an Open Competition for the safety spots. Draft status is irrelevant. Let Johnson have a fair chance to earn a starter's job.

Absolutely, jannes.

I'm thinking this could get really, really good. Will just have to wait and see, but I can see Darnell Savage being challenged for his starter spot with the level of talent brought in by Gutekunst.

That needed to happen. If Savage wakes up, great. He got benched last season. Ridiculous. It is time for him to show. I'm not sure how those VOID years work cap wise... Savage had 4 of them added to his contract. Maybe he can't be cut, and will remain an expensive backup if he doesn't win back his starting spot?

I'd love to know how those work. Savage has VOID years stretching into 2027.

Something tells me that's the dangerous precedent TGR was telling us about, and hoping the Packers do away with that kind of cap maneuvering moving forward.it's looking like we're on the hook for all of those VOID years, with all the players they attached them to, which is a good many.

Frankly, with the amount of pass rush added this offseason, I think our secondary will be ball hawking, big time. Maybe even Savage.

Gotta stay positive. I like Darnell Savage, and hope he can turn things around. Would love to see Johnson Jr. and Tarvarius Moore take both Safety spots with Savage in the slot where he had a lot of success at Maryland.

Never should have been extended in the first place. A panic move by Gutedkunst and more money wasted.

While there are no blue chip prospects to play opposite Darnell Savage, they at least have four legitimate contenders in Ford, Owens, Moore, and Johnson. Is it too much to ask that one of them stands out from the pack? Or maybe two of them, so that Savage has some competition. I do find it odd that Johnson lasted until the seventh round in a safety poor draft. I wonder if he is considered to be a high floor low ceiling type of player. When the number of games he's played is considered to be one of his great attributes, it makes me think he may be just a solid player without a lot of skills that really stand out.

Greg, he's got skills.

I'll share some stuff I gleaned from PFF on S Anthony Johnson Jr.

3159 defensive snaps 5th most played by Power 5 DB since 2018, majority of which came against Big 12 offenses. He carried a 90.0 career coverage grade through all of that. They considered his move from CB to S a resounding success do to his rare aggressiveness v. run and his Safety eyes with CB ball skills.

42.5 passer rating from slot. One of the best in the Safety class for 2023.

Did not allow a single reception of +30 yds.

Played more than 400 career ST snaps at Iowa St.

Super aggressive run support. Reliable coverage in deep halves & quarters. Effective slot coverage role.

Ha! Yeah, Greg. I don't care a ton how they become great Safeties, just that they do!

The Packers would have won 1 or 2 more Super Bowls if not for Nick Collins' tragic neck injury, ending his career. I don't think we've ever recovered from his loss. Maybe this year...!!!

I was watching several tapes of Anthony Johnson and some of those tapes were not commercial material to "sell the goods" but analyses of his play abilities, concentrating on him as safety. I was impressed with his tackling and hitting of the opponents and it looks like he is very often (much more often than not) on the right place at the right time. He is not affraid of tackling larger and taller players. I did not noticed that he attacked or fight with any OL guys, but I'll believe scouting report.

My take is that he was steal of the draft.

Hopefully, one of many, my brother!

If you want to see more competition, look up Tarvarius Moore's 2017 Southern Miss highlights. WOW. You won't be disappointed. I'd like to see both Moore and Johnson Jr. win starting spots this season.

And, I'm a Savage fan! I love the guy from Maryland, and I'm wondering where he went..???

As long as they develop everybody as best they can and let honest competition determine who should make the roster, we should be in good shape. Also, these articles keep saying we've "moved on from" Adrian Amos, but no such announcement has been made. Hopefully they're evaluating who they've got now, and if they find his replacement is in the building with depth they can save some cap space. How much would Amos cost?

Okay guys, we have now covered all the draft picks except for our two DLs, Wooden and Brooks--not even a deep dive following the draft. After losing two veterans, this is also an area of substantial need, and I am sure we will be seeing them in the rotation at times.

I don't mean to drive the whip to the authors, but I am patiently waiting for more information beyond the scouting reports and insight into how they fit in with the Packers schemes up front.

I read some articles and analyses on both. For Karl Brooks it looks like that he is way better at the edge than on DL. Wooden, on the other hand, looks like he is much better on DL 3 or 5 tehnique than on the edge, where he had much less success.

So, it looks like Packers drafted 2 edge players (LVN & Brooks) and one DL guy. Neither of them can not play nose tackle. But Packers have TJ Slaton and Ford for that role and Kenny Clark can play it if there will be necessity.

I think all position on DL and OLB/Edge position are covered well. Of course if rookies show that they belongs.

This would be the "let's see what sticks to the wall" approach.

Savage and Ford. But a lot of other guys who could certainly make the 53 and take on a big role. I was kind of snoozing on how many people we've added on defense until Greengold kept pointing it out, but we only carry 5 safeties, max, and we usually only have 4 active. It's Savage and Ford as the starters at this point. Johnson is a rookie, as is Sapp. Guys like Innes Gaines and Owen and Levitt have all been around the track a couple of times and I'm not sure they can be practice squaders any more, but then again, it does put us in a position where we don't have to play rookies unless we want to.

There’s so many Safeties that this season I’m wondering if they keep one more than normal and one less CB, or one less somewhere else?

Hard to tell what they’re doing.

Glad you mentioned Innes Gaines too, because I think he sticks. WesHod was raving about him today.

Been a Gaines fan for years too and I find this all to be more than a little perplexing.

Barry did talk about multiple position players everywhere. Gaines was a CB converted to S too while at TCU… hmmm.

Could be some real movement after some disappointing play in 2022.

His rookie year, I predicted Gaines would replace Savage in his third year. His college highlights tape is one of my all-time favorites for a DB. He's had to deal with a few injuries, but maybe, if he is healthy this year, he gets more playing time.

How many of Gute's pick past the 2nd round have done anything? Not a lot hits past the 2nd round. I wouldn't hold my breathe on a 7th rounder coming doing much as a rookie.

I’d argue all of these were above average for their draft spot:

3: Josiah Deguara (well, average for a 3)
4: Romeo Doubs, Zach Tom, Royce Newman (rookie starter)
5: Marquez Valdes-Scantling, TJ Slaton, Kingsley Enagbare
6: Equanimeous St. Brown, Jon Runyan,
7: Samari Toure, Tariq Carpenter

Not to mention UDFAs: Yosh Nijman, Innis Gaines, Patrick Taylor, Caleb Jones

I think he hit the jackpot this year as well (finally having a decent draft position too)
