An Open Letter to Aaron Rodgers

Dear Aaron:

Yesterday, Packers fans found out you want to continue your NFL career next season but not with the Green Bay Packers but with the New York Jets. Now we are waiting for the trade to officially happen, but we know your time in Green Bay is coming to an end.

It’s been 18 years since the Packers selected you in the 2005 NFL Draft. That means there’s a generation of Packers fans who don’t really remember when you weren’t a part of the team.

It wasn’t easy when you took over as the starter in 2008. You were replacing a Hall of Famer and a legend who left under less than ideal circumstances that were full of controversy. There was a lot of pressure on you but you quickly established the fact that you were ready to lead this team and be an outstanding quarterback in your own right.

It’s been an exciting run, Aaron. When you were under center, we always expected to win and more often than not, we did. You started 223 games for the Pack in 15 seasons and won 147 of them. That’s a winning percentage of .661. By comparison, Brett Favre had a .632 winning percentage and Bart Starr’s was .618.

There are so many amazing memories. Eleven playoff appearances, five NFC Championship Games and of course, one Super Bowl win. Four times you were named the Most Valuable Player in the entire NFL and you deserved it.

There were the outstanding finishes like the Hail Mary to Richard Rodgers, the last minute bomb to Randall Cobb to win the NFC North in 2013 and the seesaw playoff win in Dallas where you led two drives in the final two minutes to put the Packers ahead and then win the game.

You led 21 comebacks and 31 game winning drives in the regular season during your tenure with the team. When you were playing, we knew the game wasn’t really over until it was over.

You were confident and we had confidence in you. You owned the Chicago Bears, the Packers biggest traditional rivals and for fans who lived through the 70s and 80s, that matters. In 29 starts you made against Chicago, the Packers won 24 of them and you threw 64 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions and had a quarterback rating of 109.0.

You threw six touchdown passes in one half against the Bears in 2014 on national television which only added to the magic of the moment.

You had incredible chemistry with some great receivers. The two that stood out most were Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams. You gave them a look, a nod or a wink and both of you knew exactly what the play was changed to. When you made a back shoulder throw, it was almost impossible to defend.

Aaron, thanks for leading the Packers to a Super Bowl title. Yes, many people believe you should have won more than one and we can argue about that forever, but you were the MVP of Super Bowl XLV and that playoff run and that game are memories that will last a lifetime. Against Atlanta, everything you threw landed in the arms of a receiver. Against Pittsburgh, you came through in the clutch and helped the Pack hold on to the lead late in the game.

Then there were times when seemed to take control of the team and reminded us not to worry. After a slow start to the season, you told everybody to R-E-L-A-X and then backed it up by leading the team to the playoffs. Or the time you said the Packers could run the table and make the playoffs and then the team went out and did just that.

Yeah, off the field, there were sometimes issues. Issues with some of the things you said or did or about your relationship with the Packers organization. But honestly, Aaron, as a Packers fan, our relationship was really based on what you did on the field and that gave us a lot of thrills, wins and wonderful memories.

The end of your time in Green Bay could have gone better. We would have loved to see you finish your career in Green and Gold and ride off into the sunset after winning one more championship. We wish you luck with the Jets, except of course if you face the Packers (or end up with a division rival like Favre did).

With the passage of time, we’ll look back at the 15 years you were the starter as a successful era in the history of this storied franchise. The stories will grow taller and better with time and the memories will last us a lifetime. So, thank you, Aaron, for 15 years of winning football and a lot of thrills along the way. We’ll see you again when the Packers retire your jersey and when you’re inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Thanks, Aaron, good luck Jordan and Go Pack Go.

Sincerely,

Gil

Hear, hear...

Love the player and the person... Love his class yesterday showing Jordan Love, some Love!

Good Luck in Green and White! (Fly AR Fly) ; P

You are the best thrower of the football I've ever seen in 60+ years.

You are and always will be "Top Gun!"

That being said:

Bird….Love his class? Was it authentic is my question? What about everything else he said like the 10 times he stated he loved everyone in GB. Why would you say that so much in one conversation? I think he wants us to feel like he is the victim, even though he stated he wasn’t the victim. He wants sympathy from Packer Nation because the Packers no longer want him. The reality is it goes both ways, you get treated like how you treat others.

I’ve always supported Rodgers, but that hour of BS was too much for me to take. I will always appreciate his play and how great of a player he was and celebrate his Packer HOF induction, but not the way he acted as a person. There truly are reasons why AR has a difficult time keeping relationships in his life.

PS: Rodgers would make an awesome actor.

I gave you a thumbs up...

I think the "I love GB, the Fans, The Area, The Region" was sincere.

I also think he was trying for some "It's not me, it's the FO - sympathy."

I think the reason he went back to the I Love GB and the Fans several times, was to ensure he got his point across that he does in fact love them, whether they're happy to see him go or not...

I know I won't convince the haters to love him and I know I won't convince the racists Love is going to be a great QB in a couple years...

AR won't play in GB again. Lets move on and start supporting our QB1 - #10!

Lets hope Gutey gets this done so we can talk about the draft and guys he won't draft.

Lets pray MaLF's overhaul of the Playbook is a good one.

Facts don't matter to the people screaming, no matter which side of the street they're on.

They're going to go with their own narratives until they run out of wind.

Go Pack Go!

Thanks Bird…..I never wanted this to happen because I wanted to see Rodgers for a couple more years. I just feel Rodgers wants us to believe it is all on the Packers FO when it takes two to tango and he has culpability as well. I do think he loves GB. Just think it was overdone for his reasons. I’m all in on Love and am excited to see how he grows as a Packer.

A really great article to read is Ben Solar from the Ringer to really understand Rodgers and everything that has happened with him and the Packers since 2017. I agree with what Ben has said, basically Rodgers wants to always handle the narrative and be in control, but not let anyone think he is in control of the narrative.

Sigh, I knew this was coming....AR is in the rear view mirror now and most everybody wishes him good luck going forward. Now it's time to complete this deal, see what kind of compensation we get and put to good use, and thankfully begin a new era in Packers football.

He will be pissed off Jets because they refuse to trade their 1st rounder for him. It is obvious they think he is not that high value for them. Let's them choose Lamar Injury Jackson for 2 1st and huge guaranteed contract. That will help them.

Don't give up-
Yes- we have idiots in Green Bay.
Their master plan. Moving on from legends.
Why can’t Murphy, Just Retire?
I hate the Assumptions surrounding Love.
What a load of BS per;
there would have been No Replacement ready.
(Had Gutey not taken him.)
I gave Gutey his 5 years.
I’d Love to throw a beer in Gutey’ face.
What Damning Lies- How to destroy a Team.
He couldn’t win with the best.
Now we get to live on the idealism he can.
Gutey was about making history; moving Rodgers.
It caused such a split in the fan base. (Toxic!)
That Packer stock No longer has a upside.
Rodgers would have played!!!
Instead we have a Flea circus.
A sideshow full of character assassination.
Avoiding the real problem of the poor 2022 start.
Also - Gutekunst draft failures. Now one less legend.
So much for the big game.

After Draft Day Eve 2021, it was ALWAYS going to come to this. It just came to this a year too late.

"First #4 now #12."
And in 15 years, unless civilization collapses in the meantime, it will be #4, #12 and #10. We'll be running out of QB numbers to retire!

Dorsey didn't last two years in Cleveland. Remember, he's the guy who drafted Baker Mayfield number 1 overall, traded for Jarvis Landry, OBJ, Kareem Hunt, and Sheldon Richardson. He's in Detroit now, so I guess we'll see if he has any magic left, but I don't think it's a strong argument that he would have been a better hire than Gute.

We lost a lot of talent while Ball was the defacto GM. The FO lost most of its leading members. That some went to a very screwed up Cleveland somewhat obscures that. I can’t say I blame them. When your President sticks a cap accountant over the personnel team it pretty much tells you it’s time to move. They did. Not always wisely, but that may have been just a product of haste.

The talent drain is fact, CW, but Dorsey left for Kansas City in 2012. He had great success as part of that FO. He chose to head for Cleveland in 2017 and tripped on his dick repeatedly until he was canned. Dorsey had full control, and his people in place. He failed miserably.

Reggie McKenzie also left in 2012 to be GM for the Raiders. Alonzo Highsmith chose to leave Green Bay and join Dorsey in Cleveland in 2018, as did Eliot Wolf. They've all since moved on.

Thing is, those men are all thought of as good "football people." Even Wolf, because of his pedigree. Ball is often excluded from that group, but the guy played college football and was an NFL strength and conditioning coach for 10 years with the Chiefs before becoming an assistant to the HC. His NFL admin career started in 1999.

They do seem to have bungled the exit plan for Rodgers. If they were not transparent with him about their plans to move on after the season, and he just found out while he was contemplating playing or retiring, then they did a very poor job. They do seem to have a way of pissing off players that are no longer in their plans. Lazard seemed pretty ticked off as well. Couldn't there be a conversation at least? Saying you have been a great player for us but salary cap issues mean we have to let you find an opportunity elsewhere? Do they have these conversations? Rodgers made it sound like he heard from team mates that they were moving on from him. That would tick me off big time.

Yes, Gutey didn't win the best; at least the best Packer QB I have ever seen play, and I've been watching since #15 was under center. We will see if the plan to go younger and fresher and cheaper will lead to a fun and excitement for the fans, or whether it will lead to irrelevance as it has for the Colts, Saints, Pats, Giants and Steelers since they lost their Super Bowl winning QBS.

Great summary Gil, I just hope it's not premature.
All three principal parties to this deal are now under an extreme amount of pressure.
Pressure can create diamonds or volcanoes.
Here's hoping the trade is executed (whatever the package is) and the fans of the Green Bay Packers can look back at the AR12 years with respect, admiration and gratitude that we were here to witness it first hand.
If there are volcanoes going forward, I can only hope the lava flows into the NJ swamp and not the Fox River!
Hopefully all three parties are able to harvest diamonds instead.

A thoughtful letter - which I would not have been capable to compose at this point in time. The best that I could is not to wish any misfortune to the departed and perhaps a "thank you for your service" note. For me, more time needs to pass for all of this turbulence to have completely subsided. Also a proper homage to Rodgers is only possible upon conclusion of his career - which I look forward to. As always, my foremost thought is Go Pack Go.

Part of me says bring him in and let's compete against whichever team he's under center for. We can't forget that we are moving on for very valid reasons.
If he sits back waiting for big plays to develop it will give KClark more time to track him down and re-introduce him to the turf at 1265.
I'm not vindictive, but I wouldn't mind seeing that once or twice or six times per year!

I was an early believer in Rodgers and he far surpassed what I thought he could be. I have also been very clear that I believe his window here was closing during, and had closed after 2021.

I personally believe that the reasons we only got one ring were TTs decline and Murphy’s actions in letting first Ball run it and then himself taking over a horribly depleted Swiss cheese roster as effectively GM. I did not then see us returning to contention, but Rodgers dragged us there with help from Gute, especially in FA.

Unfortunately, I believe that Ball’s intervention cost us Rizzi and the hiring of LaFleur prevented us capitalizing on Rodgers and Adams effectively. Whether Rodgers was a factor or LaFleur can rise up once out of his shadow will become clear I think, but I believe that at best, the pairing helped neither. Sadly the Drayton affair, the baffling rejigging of an O line heading into a Championship game and soft defensive strategies in the first half of both killed us.

It wasn’t to be. The Packers are cap poor and rebuilding or at least reconsolidating. Adams has gone and time just ran out. Too many blunders originating with Murphy. It might have been better had we parted sooner, particularly for Rodgers. It will be a whole lot worse under his current contract if we don’t part now.

I hope Rodgers and NY appreciate each other. It’s time for us to focus on correcting what caused the disappointments not merely add a futile coda to your career amid a young roster that needs time to grow alongside our cap.

I look forward to Rodgers returning to see his name permanently up in Lambeau. If he has added a ring by then, well it wouldn’t have happened here, now. The Packers really are not doing Rodgers a disservice. Rodgers needs a true chance to win now. We did Rodgers one last year (and ourselves) by not facing that and wasting a year I think most of us and he would take back.

Perhaps time will make Rodgers able to see that, as long as we don’t screw up this trade, both he and we need, for much more than picks. I hope Murphy can see the real reasons for concluding this trade over and keep Ball balanced in his desire to win these negotiations. That though is a big ask of fate, given the total disgrace they concocted this time last year.

I think that history will see Rodgers as more of a symptom - not the cause of the Packers unfulfilled expectations. I proffer, that last year he was placed into an almost impossible situation (and expectation) of advancing the team from the year before - despite the depleted resources - including himself. To me, his largest misstep was to accept the impossibility of the challenge - perhaps knowing that the probability for success was low. Such may be the ego and psyche of an elite competitor.

His biggest mistake last season was playing with a broken thumb. If he was not responsible for that decision, then he should've gotten the NFLPA involved so that he could rest it and rehab it for a month; I suspect. however, that he, indeed, decided to play those games.

If we stop thinking of great athletes as wise, much of this is less surprising. They live their lives in a bubble where they are the big cheese from early on. Intelligence, when present, doesn’t often acquire the perspectives that produce the wisdom many expect it to as a result, nor is it as astute as they themselves often believe they are being. I see much if that in Rodgers behavior.

Although some here struggle with it, Rodgers is human and errs. It’s up to the team to manage that. I think we did so very poorly once TT retreated and, actually, particularly after McCarthy left. That’s mainly on Murphy, since it seems clear he established himself as Rodgers ear in management and certainly was the fulcrum of power and decision making. A lot of what we saw could have been prevented or resolved. A shame for both parties.

I believe that there are high-performance individuals - whether it be in athletics or business - who become deluded as to their prowess and potency - thinking it be inexhaustible and immune from the ageing process. Nor do these individuals necessarily seek out the sage advice or wisdom from others. While in the case of A.R. - he has been surrounded by enablers who have attached their personal agendas to his. I agree - a shameful and preventable outcome.

AFter 17 years in the league, did he really need to be in t-shirts and shorts with rookies that don't even know the playbook yet? He missed the previous off season and won his 4th MVP. So I think that narrative is overblown quite a bit. If you're tossing the ball around with a bunch of guys in shorts, with no defense on the field, does that really establish the connection with the receivers?

Despite this so-called shortcoming, GB had two of the most productive WRs of the entire rookie class. So I don't think it was the off-season thing that affected 2022.

Lazard was hurt and missed time, Watkins was hurt and missed much of the season, Watson was hurt and missed time (including training camp, which is when you really get on the same page) and Doubs was hurt. And . . . Rodgers was playing with a broken thumb.

I think those issues carry tons more weight than voluntary workouts with rookies barely in the playbook

An article yesterday had a headline suggesting the Packers have all the leverage in a trade. I dunno, I think the Jets heard his interview yesterday too. Rodgers saying he felt 90% retired going into the darkness? Now he wants to play after feeling spurned by the Packers? He didn't seem all-in committed last season. I could see the Jets taking a step back.

Lazard is worth what the Jets are paying him whether or not 12 plays another down...

He's also very valuable in the WR Room for Hackett, no matter who the QB is.

Garrett can come to Lazard at any time, ask a question about Hackett's System and Lazard will have the answer. To me, that's very valuable.

Irish,
Check out the article from The Ringer I shared a link below on. They went into this in depth. Plenty of other things as well which are undeniable from the MO Rodgers has built for himself.

I’m starting to question his desires to see playing for the Jets through to completion of a trade. Could see him blowing up this trade in a self destruct mode to simply walk off into retirement.

The pressure to win it all will land squarely upon his shoulders.

Articles like that are the very beginning of what he can expect from a bigger national & New York media lense. They literally called him out on his tweaker routine. Already.

I'm not reading any Aaron Rodgers fluff pieces until he sets the record straight with the New York Jets, and commits to playing for them for a minimum of two years.

Sorry, but, he's doing the Green Bay Packers a huge disservice by failing to carry through with communicating that clearly. He had no problems signing the contract... which was for how many years?

Talk about some horse shit.

The least he could do is help to keep the Packers from getting screwed. Media outlets everywhere characterizing the Packers wishes of ample compensation akin to what Detroit received in trading away Matthew Stafford as absurd, mischaracterizing it as being a 1 year deal.

Aaron Rodgers knows exactly what he's doing here. I'm refusing to celebrate anything about his previous play until he comes clean in fairness to the Green & Gold Nation.

Anybody thinking Rodgers is going to quit playing after one year in New York, with that level of talent assembled, for another $50,000,000... I've got a bridge to sell you.

I'm putting this straight back upon Aaron Rodgers. No more game playing at the Packers' expense, and that of the entire Green Bay Packers fan base.

Aaron Rodgers forced Packer fans to put up with all his years of contrived BS... for what in return, exactly?

Last year, we needed his presence to help rookie WRs get up to speed with the O. Instead, he felt his time was better spent tripping balls in South America.

Give me a freaking break.

Aaron Rodgers needs to fix this now.

ps. I do appreciate your work, Gil. I simply find this letter to be a bit premature at this juncture. No one has definitive information to report on there being a trade commitment between the teams.

Why would he need to do that? I'm always happy to have a player I know join a team I don't normally watch to make the regular season games a little more interesting but who cares how long he plays for them?

"Sorry, but, he's doing the Green Bay Packers a huge disservice by failing to carry through with communicating that clearly. He had no problems signing the contract... which was for how many years?"

NFL contracts aren't really binding legal contracts in the normal sense - teams break them all the time. Really curious what the issue is here.

Legacy?

Hey, Aaron Rodgers is writing his own history here in Green Bay right now. He might want to consider what he's saying, or not saying. He might want to consider fairness.

Do you think Aaron Rodgers believes he's worthy of just a 2nd Round pick?

More importantly, do you think that? As a fan?

Holy crap, are the Packers being played by the mechanisms of a billionaire owner... You do know they had some of the brightest minds under their employ giving advice on best mechanisms to keep the Jet's trade burden as low as possible, right?

Do you know any of those people? I do. Many. Both family & friends. Woody Johnson did not fly out to talk with Aaron Rodgers unprepared. Rather, he went with his team of top minds in the business, and the best strategies money could buy to share with AR personally. What to say. What not to say.

Think billionaire team owners don't have writers at CBS Sports, ESPN, etc. on their payrolls to write the stuff you can click on now as I've described?

Greengold, you and Coldworld placed 2 articles and I went to read both of them.

First to support Coldworld claim about how we often suppose great athletes is wise. No that is more false than true.

ACR is highly intelligent person. No question about that. But, what intelligence is - by short definition: the ability to quickly cope with unexpected situations.

Intelligence is a tool, not premise to wiseness or cleverness. It can help to achieve certain level of wiseness or cleverness. But, as any tool, if you use it inproperly, it can make more damage than if you do not use.

There is the tendency in people with high intelligence to become overly self confident and feeling how they are better than others in everything they are doing.

Intelligence can help a lot in learning new skills, new knowledge, in understanding processes and so on. When highly intelligent person become overly self confident, they stop their developments by reason their view of themselves is that they can not be wrong in what they do, say, think.

Intelligence also brings capability to find "good" excuses for own failures, to keep picture of ourselves as high as we can think of.

Intelligence, used properly can produce wiseness ans cleverness. Unfortunatelly many of highly intelligent people use their intelligence wrongly.

So, to poses high level of intelligence is at the same time blessing as it is curse.

And that is how I see ACR. Unfortunatelly he used his intelligence wrongly all together except for his playing where his intelligence help him a lot. And that is why are all those controversies about ACR started and keeping present.

I understand where his specific opinion comes from - starting from vaccination, medicine & drugs, political opinions, infatuation with alternative "medicine", supporting minority opinions (Rogan). Because when we are talking about anything made by humans, it is easy to understand all small parts of how those things are made and how are functioning. With nature we do not have complete comprehension. And because of that we do not completely understand processes and outcomes from the way nature (like for example human organism and specific illness or influence of microorganisms, or insects on processes in the nature) is functioning. So claiming that the solution for everything is ayahuasca or darkness retreat is sure solution is a little bit ridiculous. Can those help, sure, it might. But we do not know. As I can see on ACR example, ayahuasca just strengthened his "self love" (read arrogance) and darkness retreat was not helped him to clear view on himself. He came with resolution which does not change what he already thinking - retirement from football. And that resolution was changed in the blink of the eye. So, where is that additinal benefit of that darkness retreat.

Oh, people. It is so easy to manipulate with crowd. Larger the crowd, easier is to manipulate with. Even with crowd of highly inrtelligence people!

Provocative GG!

I thought it was very peculiar that the Packer organization wouldn't have had at least a representative present at that CA meeting simply for the reasons you mention. I would think normally a team would have worked out the arrangements of compensation prior to letting another team meet/talk to their star player, but with AR playing the 'I don't know whether I will play, or for how long I will play' crap that the Packers could not hammer out any type of compensation deal. As a result, we now have this deadlock BS in place with the Jet's trying to low-ball the Packers. The less compensation the Jet's give the Packers the better chance the Rodgers led Jet's have in going to a SB.

Gutey & Ball please do not cave & let AR and the Jet's win!

Get as much as you can this year, and have all kinds of draft consideration built in 2024 & 2025 based on AR performance & the Jets win/loss performance.

Interesting article about our increasingly complicated quarterback of all these years -- and apparently even still, until a deal is done.
Oh, how I hope the deal is done tonight, so that we finally move on from all of the melodrama of Aaron Rodgers in all of its complexities.
***
Going forward, I'm not sure how much time and energy I want to spend untangling the intricate story of Rodgers in his years with the Packers -- perhaps I'll mostly wait for the possibility of an insightful biography -- but I'll put forth one theory in this comment that seems to not have been mentioned elsewhere.
My impression is that a similar thing happened to Aaron Rodgers along the way that happened to Brett Favre -- both of them became disinterested in the details, and disinclined to the discipline, that go into preparing as an NFL quarterback, the little things that make the difference in leading a team to the very top of the competitive NFL for a title.
At some point, both guys mostly just wanted to sling the football over the field on Sunday afternoons like a backyard game of touch football, rather than putting in the patient effort to practice the little things for implementation in games.
Both of them thought they were good enough to no longer have to sweat the small stuff -- and to a large extent they were right, although their similar lack of dedication ultimately was their respective downfalls.
***
Both were still highly productive as quarterbacks overall, but in the tight situations of high-pressure playoff games against relentless and punishing defenses, they faltered in ways that were heartbreaking and head-scratching, and on at least one occasion apiece, embarrassing:
In the case of Favre, it was his mystifying interception in overtime against the Eagles, in which he seemed to literally throw the ball up for grabs; in the case of Rodgers, it was overlooking a wide-open Allen Lazard near the end of regulation against the 49ers, instead throwing in futility to Davante Adams in double coverage with a pass that wasn't close to completion.
Their commonality of a lack of commitment to football and the craft of quarterbacking would possibly explain why both were so indecisive in their final years with the Packers about going all-in with the team.
It also may explain why they apparently became less coachable, if not downright difficult to the point of domineering.
***
Whether because of laziness or depression or ego or whatever, it seems both Rodgers and Favre fizzled in the last parts of their Packers careers when it came to team success.
We do well to remember both fondly for their great achievements on the field -- including one Super Bowl triumph for each, no small feat -- but there's also a sense of disappointment and melancholy that tarnishes the ends of their tenures with the Packers.
It's not the same as with Bart Starr, who seems to have stayed too long, but at the same time to have been fully invested in the team to the end. He still goes out as a warrior of admiration.
With both Favre and Rodgers, there's a sense of potential unfulfilled, for them as individuals and for team success in the final years.
There's a frustration and sadness. I hope this will fade over time, but not be forgotten, remaining on some underlying level as lessons to be heeded by all of us in our common human frailty -- in matters such as complacency.
Most of all, though, I'll be glad to celebrate the abundance of good times we enjoyed with both Favre and Rodgers -- in appreciation of their stellar contributions to the Packers -- with festive reunions at Lambeau Field and hearty hugs all around.
***
P.S. At least this is my sincere take on aspects of the careers of Favre and Rodgers, expressed as best I can in a limited amount of time. I'm truly glad for other observations and opinions.

BD,
There has to be a veteran player included with this year's #13, such as WR, Elijah Moore, or even a Zach Wilson. One of these two teams are going to have a hole at back-up QB, so let it be the Jets. I think many Packer fans are unwilling to understand the value of Zach being included in the compensation for the Packers. Should it come down to this getting a #1, and Zach this year would be huge. I'd still want draft pick consideration for 2024, and 2025 based on performance & games played.

CW,
Zach was the #2 pick in the draft two years ago if memory serves me right. They guy will not turn 24-years old until August of this year. They literally threw him in the frying pan as the starter and in New f---ing York no less. Aaron Rodgers would not have succeeded either in that situation. The guy desperately needs a reset and a soft landing. There must be a reason why Woody wants to keep him. In the never ending arm wrestling match no doubt Gutey & Ball are proposing many different options of players, draft picks, and picking up some of that $100 million. My point is the Packers are going to need a back-up QB and Zach is only costing $940,000 in 2023, and slightly over $1,000,000 in 2024. Try finding a good back-up veteran QB for that price?

With two full seasons of experience and such a highly rated QB if they can get Woody to throw in Zach I'd gamble and take a risk. At only 23-years old he is a baby and will be improving and maturing for many years to come. I keep preaching creativity and keeping an eye out for opportunity. For clarity....I would not sacrifice a #1 or even a #2 for Wilson, but if the Packers can get him as a throw to finalize the deal I'd do it in a heart beat.

I think he'll have growing pains, no doubt, but I think he's a franchise QB in a couple years... He has as much talent as Rodgers did coming out, IMO. He didn't have the QB schools 12 had, or as much playing time as Rodgers did early, but hey, I think he's a keeper.

Won't know for sure until we see how he handles his first season. I've seen nothing that would indicate he can't develop into a great QB... No obvious blind spots I can see. IDK if MaLF is the HC he deserves or needs. Or the play caller... Maybe they'll both grow together? IDK. Only time will tell, that's why I would make the Jets give up their '26 1st rounder, just in case... Only smart to hedge your bets right?

I just don't care greengold so it always surprises me how much people get worked up over this stuff.

I have no idea what ARods trade value is worth other than that it was a lot more last year. This year... the magic 8 ball says results are inconclusive. I guess it's kinda like real estate - it's worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Johnson will get tired of the BS before Gutey does, you can bet on that. Sooner or later Woody will instruct his GM to just get the deal done. Billionaires rarely like to wait. (I've never met a billionaire to my knowledge, but I've met several millionaires, and they don't like to wait at all, so I assume billionaires are much the same way...) ;P

People will always see & hear what they want! I too agree wholeheartedly with GG and believe there is much more going on behind the scenes, particularly with AR. He used very well thought out & well rehearsed responses with careful phrasing. There was much one could read between the lines even though he was gracious about the city of Green Bay & the fans.

AR is still close to the top of his game and should be for several more years, particularly with a good team like the Jet's around him. Clearly one should be able to read between the lines on the PM show with his responses. If you only have love and admiration for AR, obviously you likely will not comprehend what GG is saying.

Last year, Rodgers negotiated hard & signed the 3-year contract. Never for one moment have I ever believed AR was seriously considering retirement. Never for even one nanosecond! Even AJ Hawk who is Rodgers friend did not believe Rodgers retirement crap. During the year, and particularly late in the year Rodgers no doubt had an inkling the front office was not happy & especially following the Lions loss, The possible retirement talk was his way of hedging his bet and retaining control. Going into a blackness retreat to decide whether to retire or not must have been the last straw for the Packer organization. There wasn't just one event that led the Packers to their decision, but a major multi-linear sequencing of events leading to the divorce.

As GG states, if you think AR who will be playing on a very talented team with a guaranteed $60 million on the table this year, and another guaranteed $50 million on the table in 2024 will retire I will sell you a bridge in Baghdad. AR is intentionally not being forthright and honest and he is only hurting the Packers, & the fan base regarding compensation with his never ending game playing. This BS is deep & only those who want to see beyond their admiration for AR will comprehend.

I will not miss AR & by the way.....there is no debate Aaron....it is guys like Starr & Hutson, and even Favre who are at the top of the food chain. The impact these guys had on the organization when they played are reasons all of us are able to enjoy Green Bay Packer football today.

Farve was the "NY Bozo" AR had in his audibles...

Farve couldn't get out of his own way either. He was just more likeable because of the hillbilly act he put on. Both Favre and Rodgers were great QBs, no doubt, but Starr is the Best Packer of ALL-TIME...

Just saying...

GG….his conversation albeit like a great actor, seemed to me to position him for sympathy from Packer nation for how he is being treated. How many times in one hour did he say he Loved everyone in the WI, Packer nation and Green Bay itself, maybe 10, that’s a bit overload. He says he’s not the victim, but that isn’t how he talked.

He contradicted himself when he said the Packers told him they wanted him to be a Packer till he retires and than stated after he got out of darkness and decided to play he felt unwanted by the Packers during part of the season and the week afterwards while in GB.

I loved his play on the field, but his me me and poor me attitude really sad.

Oh yeah, Rarescope!

My apologies for not thanking you for that then, but, I was on a roll.

I am a bit too abrupt for some, and I don’t mince words, especially when set off by tweakers. My bad.

Aaron Rodgers is a tweaker extraordinaire.

I also don’t hesitate to call BS on those circumstances so deserving, because I care about our team’s standing, the professionalism established by legends in the game, and winning Super Bowls.

I love our team, I bleed green & gold, and I’m immensely disappointed by both Murphy & Rodgers for their unprofessionalism. Both of them are narcissistic tweakers, which is a form of abuse.

The team and fellow Packer fans have suffered as a result, and deserved far better, like… how about a unified focus?

How much are we paying those ass clowns?

Rodgers required sage guidance to make the most of the 2nd half of his career, and LaFleur was too young and untested to command his respect to take both he and our team to new levels.

Murphy’s & Rodgers’ spats carried over onto the field, and grew to be more an embarrassment in how our team is perceived.

The G stands for GREATNESS, not goons. Those two have been acting more the latter for years now.

Does it matter?

Some folks can't let go and it's sad. The assumption is the Packers will suck because an aging legend is no longer there. Maybe so, maybe not.

When Joe Montana left SF the fans thought it was the end. Weird but that franchise has been among the best all these decades.

Football is a team sport, more so than any other.. You would swear reading comments that Aaron Rodgers won the games single-handed. He didn't need a line, receivers, running backs, a solid defense and coaching. Just Aaron Rodgers doing it all by himself.
I'm one of the few that is happy to see him gone. I'm even willing to accept a couple of rough years, though that may not be the case. The hatred by some of the Packers front office ignores the fact that the front office bent over backwards to please Rodgers, in my view to the detriment of the team overall.
Many fans think the Packers operate in a vacuum and are immune to the forces that have also lowered another winning franchise in New England for example. Bill B. is one of the great coaches yet the forces of time and system have also slowed them down. Does that mean everyone now is stupid?
My greatest fear is that after the first incomplete pass Jordan Love throws all the geniuses will be calling for his benching and firing everyone including the janitor. I see Love leading a mostly young team.

All the folks who cry for Aaron Rodgers can spend their time putting his new Jets wall poster up while Packers fans cheer on the future.

Dear Aaron,
A few years back my nephew won an award at a ceremony that took place in the Atrium.
The award was for being ranked #1 in the state for high school athletes, in his respective sport.
While walking backstage after receiving the award,…and just before he slipped back into obscurity, he said you ran up to him. With no cameras or photographers present you stopped him to simply give him a few minutes of your time that included many positive words of encouragement. With my nephew being a local kid, you acknowledged to him you were well aware of his athletic accomplishments.
That brief moment with the greatest quarterback to ever step onto an NFL field meant the world to him.
Thank You, for that!

Waaaaay better then Yount, in my book.
Yet, Yount gets all the publicity for being the greatest Brewer.
Never understood why.
His last 7-8 years were brutal. Struck out at most at bats. While Molitor got clutch hit after clutch hit.
Plus, there’s that thing where he held out for more money after winning the MVP (1989 ?) with very average numbers. And when he went into the Hall of Fame, while commenting about why he only chose to play his entire career in Milwaukee, he only repeated at least 10,000 times,…”Because it was never about the money.”
So we’re just supposed to forget how you held out for more money after the MVP season???
Plus, he held that team hostage for so many years with his eventual ginormous salary (at the time), while doing nothing on the field.
Buuuuut,…that’s for another time and place.

He'll probably just want to accept it on the Pat McTanktop show instead of showing up live. LOL. Just kidding, really.

It's a shame what the FOs did to both Favre and Rodgers by not putting enough team or really coaching around them to win more championships. I know, they both had certain times and or plays that changed how seasons turned out, but that's why you have to make it so it's not all about the QB and give them as many chances as possible. Sort of, or actually like the Chiefs are doing for Maholmes or what the Patriots did with Brady. Sure, they don't/didn't win it every year, but they're getting/had their chances.

I hope they've learned and won't screw up the early part of Loves career. They need to go all in while he's relatively young and cheap and can put/retain ballers on both sides of the ball. If a QB is good, you know he's going to suck up cap in the future.

He said he felt during the season that things had changed, that after they told him that they did want him back, and around his February darkness he found out they were talking to others. He then implied that that was a major factor in him changing his mind from almost certainly retiring.

Until Murphy opened his mouth, that suggests he had not been told he was not wanted. It further suggests that he was done till the team suggested by actions it might not be his choice to leave or return.

Sorry, that story doesn’t hold together for me. It’s a narrative that’s contradictory and sounds like one cobbled together around omitted inconvenient facts. Even McAfee looked baffled by that one.

We are getting fed a narrative that’s plausible, may not be false entirely, but is not one that holds together well. I suspect we won’t hear the rest of it, but I caution against taking this too authoritatively.

Nice letter, Gil. I hope Aaron reads it. It reflects what a lot of fans feel about Rodgers, including me.

After Bart Starr, enduring mostly losing seasons for two decades with a host of 20 or so QBs behind center, Packer fans were blessed to enjoy 3 decades of Favre and Rodgers with winning seasons and playoffs and two SBs.

Rodgers will be welcomed back to Lambeau when his number is deservedly retired on the Ring of Honor. I wish him success with the Jets.

I have a photo of Bart, Brett and Aaron on my wall. Class, toughness, and talent respectively.

Gil an excellent and well written article on Aaron Rodgers. Thank you for posting this.

Rodgers has given us and the Packers many more good days than bad. On the field he gave us everything he had. Speaking for myself he has provided some of my fondest sports memories.

History will determine how he is remembered but while the Lombardi Packers will and should be remembered as the Packers greatest team unless some one else comes along I think that 50+ years from now Aaron Rodgers will be remembered as the Packers greatest player. And if nothing else he will be the Packers QB against which future Packers QBs will be measured.

I have been fortunate to have watched the Lombardi Packers with Bart Starr, the Favre era in Green Bay and most recently the Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay. I will never say never but I'm not very confident that I have another great Packer era/QB era left. In any case it's been a hell of a ride and I'm grateful for all of it. In the end that is the most that we as fans can ask for from our team or any of our players. Thanks, Since '61

P.S. To Packers management, don't be greedy, get this deal done for the good of everyone concerned with both teams.
I'd take one draft pick in the second round to get out from under Rodgers' contract.
Is there a wide receiver on the Jets we would want to be included if possible?

Im in the same boat, Swisch. All the wonderful memories I have watching this team win with 12 under center will never go away, but its gonna take time for this sour taste in my mouth to subside. None of this should have ever happened. 12 should never have put the front office in a position to where they felt the need to draft a qb. And then he spent the next 3 years punishing the front office for reacting to his behavior. Damned if they did, damned if they didnt. Its gonna take time.

The Packers have been blessed with back-to-back QB standouts. And both were "Bear killers". Now, it is time to move on, and hope that Love can continue to carry the torch. This will be a tough task, but just as Rodgers took over for a legend, after being drafted while Favre was still in his prime. Sitting behind Favre, never causing waves, waiting his turn, until the team finally felt it was time to move on. Both men had their warts. Both began to focus on one option later in their careers. But focusing on Rodgers, let's not forget about his tendency to hold onto the ball, playing "hero ball" rather than simply moving the chains. Or his (apparent) reluctance to lean harder into the running game. On the other hand, Rodgers was epic in being careful with the ball, could thread a needle from thirty yards away, and was a master at diagnosing defenses. Favre was unique in his enthusiasm. He acted more like a high school kid who had just won "the big one". Rodgers was always more cerebral, more restrained, except when challenged, as when he yelled at Bears fans, "I own you! I've always owned you!" So, I hope that the Jets deal goes through, and that he finds a new chip on his shoulder and leads them to new heights. Even if he wins a second Lombardi, it would be a moment to celebrate. Goodbye, Mr. Rodgers, and may your new neighborhood be as good for you as you were for us for so many years.

Imprudent decision, by Packer Management - that's the bottom line,

In 2022-23, Aaron Rodgers played with a broken thumb nearly all season, loss of a future hall of fame receiver Adams and Marquez Valdez Scantling who the Chiefs would not have gotten past the Bengals in the AFC Championship game without, injured rotating offensive lineman, injured and new rotating wide receivers and despite all this still had the Packers within minutes of a playoff birth and was in the top 10 and 15 of 32 starting quarterbacks in most categories.

In 2021 with Davante leading the team with just 3 dropped passes on 169 targets the Packers dropped a total of 15 passes. By contrast with Davante gone and the new receivers, the Packers dropped 41 passes.

Add 26 completions to Aaron's numbers and where does he stand. The final Lion game - 5 Packer dropped passes. If they were caught the Packers would have made the playoffs. See "Advanced Receiving" at football reference for the season and individual games

No other QB - young or old - would have gotten the Packers as far as Aaron did last year.

In 2021 against the 49ers in the playoffs, blocked punt and blocked field - Aaron doesn't play special teams. Same with the Seattle NFC championship game years ago and many other games.

Unfortunately Jordan Love 2023 is not Aaron Rodgers 2008 and Aaron Rodgers 2023 is not Brett Favre 2008. That is clear and will become more clear - Rodgers 1 year removed from 2 consecutive MVP awards and with a young receiving core of that dropped 41 balls last year relative to 2021's 15 and with a rotating offensive line and a broken thumb. No QB, young or old, would have done as well as Rodgers did for the Packers last year.
As I wrote, we Packer fans have been spoiled by Aaron Rodgers.

If he was that hurt he shouldn't have been on the f***ing field!!!

the Packers are +400 to win the NFC North next season.
Following Aaron Rodgers announcement,

An Open Letter to stockholder.

Dear stockholder,

I have a friend who spent his career in forestry; a good amount of his time was spent working to stop the spread of Dutch Elm Disease. It got to the point where he would only see diseased trees when he looked at elms. All that was healthy had been rendered invisible to him due to his single-minded focus.

Tipico Sportsbook can stand on its head for all I care. I'm not breaking out in a cold sweat until I hear from Ed Wood, and neither should you. Relax, man. We'll burn that bridge when we get to it. You don't have to be a rocket surgeon to understand the Packers did not begin with and will not end with Aaron Rodgers. Aaron will live on in New Jersey. He will not go quietly into the night, He will not vanish without a fight. He will live on! He will survive! And he will celebrate him in his new uniform

I hear your angst, but no matter how many times you beat that dead horse near the water, you cannot make him drink. It's a poison well. It's PCBs and PFAS on steroids. It's a disease of perception that clouds the ability to reason. Do you know why grandma used to always cut the ends off the ham at Easter? DO YOU? It was because the roaster was too small to accommodate that delicious salty pork.

Sincerely,
Leotis

You can trust the media (an make no mistake, everyone belongs to the media beside McAffe) with these odds, you dont know that?
You know, we had so good odds over the last 12 years and never won something with that Diva, so it should be a good sign.
I dont know how good Gute is but compared to AR he is a strong, honest hero. Thanks the eyerolling is gone, the drama, the losing when it counts. The blaming of everone else but himself.
What did Rex Ryan say.....hes legacy was it to come up short when it counts. But hey, thats all made up by the media, who got everything right in his case.
In real he has 5 SB wins since 2011.

Does this Stockholder get weaker and more twistted by the hour, or is that just me. He was always kind of strange, but now he looks desperat that the press got everything right and he is even more wrong than usually.
The season would be fun, when he blames everyone (and the media) for everything and when AR comes up shor againt, whit the loaded roster in NY, it will be Loves fault or Bill Gates or who else he can find.

Gute has the hell of a track record, so its clear we all trust him. Hell, he even one the standoff with AR and the odds have been largly against Gute. But he came up wining anyway. The opposite to AR.

It will be interesting to see how Rodgers does this year without a broken thumb and with a better supporting cast. Especially a defense that plays tough where he doesn't have to carry the team. On the other hand, don't let NY get him for a pittance.

did he had something broken as he lost all this games that really counted? Other than, he had a way better supporting cast over the years than any other top 10 QB.
And this year the bailed him out. His WRs, Jones and the O-line. He does not have to carrie the Jets as he did not carrie the Packers the last 10 years, that for sure.
I dont care what they get for him, if h is out you can habe the joy back of watching football. We can even let our kids back watching, no matter what the record will be. And my guess is, a 7 to 9 playoff record over the years can we always get, even without giving someone halnf a billion to do it.

And another complete crazy take is: Who is any of that "the media", just because AR tries to blame them, like he always does???? That hip today, even it makes no sense to blame someone and AR always tries to blame someone who gets fire anymay, all the time. So its a easy scapegoat.
How loa can you go Rodgers? Its always the same you do. Even "the media" was nearly right about everything in your case, you just say the opposite.
"The bad media is so bad, because they say what they should, the truth. And me, poor AR are the victime again. Its so hard for me, even if im the smartest guy on earth."
This is the playbook from the weak, unmoralic in our country. Trump, Musk, you name it, doing the same way. Its kind of hip and easy. The media is a popular aim, even if they get it right like in Rodgers case. Crazy times where the good one gets blamed..........and some guy on this site jump on it.
Yeah, AR is so honest and the bad media makes him look bad..........because they tell the truth.
