All Corey Williams, All the Time

Enough.

The subject of Corey Williams and his chances of staying with the the Packers next season is on everyone's mind and I've had just about as much as I can handle. It's simple really. There is no way that Williams will be a Packer next year. Thompson may tag him, but if he does, it will be to trade him, as Greg Bedard asserts. As I've stated time and again, Williams is good, not great, and by no means worth the money he will be earning next season.

I understand the impulse of Packer fans who say "We HAVE to keep Williams" - but this thought is misguided at best. He's serviceable, even very good at times. But ask yourself - Where was he in the playoffs? What impact did he make? Great players step up their game on the biggest stages. The bigger the game, the greater the player. Not Williams. He all but disappeared, even against the Seahawks. I went back and watched both playoff games, and trust me, he couldn't have been more pedestrian.

Now don't get me wrong - as part of the rotation, he is an extremely valuable piece of the puzzle. He fits in well with Jenkins, Jolly, Pickett and Harrell. But he's not irreplaceable. Harrell will take big steps from his rookie season. (Trust me.) And don't forget Daniel Muir. Given an off season in the Packers program, you could see a Johnny Jolly-like jump from him. And that's the point. Thompson and McCarthy trust in their system. It has produced players like Jolly and Jennings, guys who took big jumps from their first to second seasons. No doubt they will continue to rely on improvement from within and let Williams ride off to the monster pay-day that is waiting for him from an organization that is not as smart as the Packers.

The Green Bay Packers Should Franchise Corey Williams...and Trade Him...

the Green Bay Packers are moderately comfortable in terms of money, but certainly not in a position of power. There are roughly 10 teams with $10 million or more cap room available than the Packers.

Don't pull that trust me crap. Justin Harrell needs to show Packer fans the money.
