After Further Review: Packers vs. Dolphins

Ross will provide a few observations every Monday afternoon following a Packers game based on a few viewings of the condensed version of the game on NFL GamePass.  While this might not be the All-22 camera deep dive that might be more "educational", it should provide a conversation point for the rest of the week.

This was a game that they had to "get right", and they did.  Brocketship or no Brocketship they beat an above .500 team by 19 points.  Was it perfect? No. They probably haven't had one of those flawless performances since 2014, but that baby right there is what this Packers team is going to need to do to have a chance to win games.  The defense will provide enough chances for the offense to win the game.  If they can get to 31 more often than not that will be enough.

Aaron Jones, man.  What is there to say about Aaron Jones that I haven't already said.  He's a top flight back in this league and should have been featured like this the entire time.

I know there is a lot of criticism on this page but allow me to rave. Kenny Clark is a beast. IMO he and Davante Adams have been the 2 best and most consistent players on the team All year. Kenny Clark is the best player on this defense, and one of the better players in the league. Also, just to show how overrated sacks are, Kenny Clark was not destroying the Stat sheet last night but atleast 3, possibly 4 of those sacks were a direct result of Clark collapsing the pocket, or drawing a double team. The free rush Lowry had was because of Clark destroying the A Gap. The dude is a nightmare for centers and guards. Watch the film. No matter what happens moving forward we have a solid nucleus of young players with huge ceilings with Clark and Alexander.

All true.

Also look around for #52.

His disruption and scheming his rush lane opened up multiple pressures and sacks.

Not every play on D is designed for each player to just go all out on their own.

CMIII is having a pretty disruptive season, much better than the stat sheet shows.

I hope you are right about Greene. If this is the first showing of a capable starter then GB’s prospects just got noticeably better. That said, I will wait for a bigger sample size before getting excited.

I am starting to think that Brown may be a true prospect at CB too. I like his attitude on the field and he made some (penalty free) plays yesterday that earn him a mention I think.

I am encouraged, by both Greene and Brown, I am just leery of extrapolating a starting career from on encouraging performance or a few isolated impressive plays. I look forward to tracking these two as the season progresses.

Tony Brown is an Alabama guy so that right there combined with the small sample size gives me reason to be optimistic. Saban is a DB expert and he recruited him and put him out on the field so lets see. Brown also is a legendary motor mouthed trash talker according to his teammates and opponents at Bama. Its been awhile since we had a guy like that back there.

Why did Pettine continue to hang on to Brice.
Green is a much better prospect than Brice. And Brown is a nice addition. These young guys are full of energy and move fast to the ball.

Pettine is a great DC and they are first in sacks and top 15 in yards. He is coaching young guys to play aggressively and with confidence. 23 ,50 and 97 are playing great and those other young players are taking huge steps on a weekly basis. The best coaching job have been on defense. The receivers are the other group that has taken huge steps.

The Packers are tied for the NFL lead in sacks with Clark and Fackrell tops on the team.

Time to dump the $25 million in salaries for Matthews & Perry, that money can be better used (and earned) elsewhere.

From the small sample I saw, both Greene and Brown played with veteran swagger. Brown looks like he could be an outstanding bump and run perimeter CB. Raven Greene has some serious playmaking recognition and quickness. He also positions himself very well. Jones has shown a little improvement of late; however, RAVen Greene looks more like the future.

If firing Mike McCarthy means the chance of Pettine leaving than Mike McCarthy should not be fired. Like John Elway late in his career, it's more important to have a great defense and a great running game than a great passing game. It is absolutely critical to keep Pettine here long term. After next draft we could possibly have a Buddy Ryan 1985 style defense. It's coming and coming fast!!!

If the next head coach looks at what Pettine has accomplished in his short stay in GB, and says no thanks, that guy should not be the next coach of the green bay packers. Idk about 85 worthy, but certainly a top 10 defense is potentially in the cards next year

Why not? I can see this forming. Maybe you can't probably because you weren't even born in 1985 I am guessing. They are quickly and decisively adding and subtracting constantly from that defense trying to form the perfect recipe. Pettine knows exactly what he wants and needs and you can see Gute is trying to help him get there as fast as possible. I don't want to see Pettine gone. They could hire some guy next year that Pettine thinks is an asshole and next thing you know he's gone. Pettine reminds me so much of Mike Holmgren in his teaching style and demeanor.

Pettine's philosophy on defense is from Rex Ryan who was Buddy's son. I saw the Bears defense and I can see where this is going. They get a couple more hits in the draft especially at OLB and suddenly they are a major force and one to be feared. When the 85 Bears won the super bowl, Buddy Ryan was carried off the field by his players. Many felt he was the main reason they won despite not being head coach (Ditka). Pettine is gaining the same momentum here in Green Bay as Buddy did in Chicago. He's the key to everything. All McCarthy has to do is keep the ship on course and stay out of the way. He can do that. Pettine is gaining major leverage every week in determining the future of MM.

Agree about McCarthy on Pettine. There is far more talent on this roster than what we can see. Pettine's scheme depends on good secondary play. Which allows collapsing pocket and delayed blitz packages. Pettine's scheme is not simple, players most know their responsibility in each sub package to have success. Teams that run this type of scheme must have a veteran in at one of the safety positions to make the the pre snap calls. I was at the game and the speed and size of the fish WR had to been seen to be believed. With the way the league rules are, offensives will always have the advantage outside of the 20 yard line. Modern NFL defenses make their bones inside the 20's, where route options become limited and running lanes get very narrow very fast. While I would not call this defense as good as the 85 Bears,(that was a really special group) this is a group that understands what they have to do on the field, and more importantly, do not make that game killer mistake. For 'this' NFL, this is a good defense, one that will only get better as the rest of this season plays out. (depending on injuries of course. knock on wood......)

People do not get. When Packers plays well, it is because players were playing well, but if Packers sucks it is because Mike McCarthy sucks... That I call perfect logic.

I remember 2 or 3 years ago, on this very web page I read a lot of comments how Packers should bring Jon Gruden (not Jay) back to coaching and get rid of Mike McCarthy.

And look what happened when Jon Gruden came back! Oh, I love when life shows overconfident experts their real knowledge about coaching, playing, play calling etc. in what those people doing like hobby.

Some of you will claim Gruden (Jon, not Jay) has little talent on the team! Well, I may agree on that. But than, why rid of your best talented players (Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper)? Is there any sense in that move. To me it looks like stupidity...

Also, I hear here that TT ruined Packers and left the Packers with no talent. Why, then, Mike McCarthy does not get excuse as Jon Gruden? Because you are Mike McCathy haters, not professional expert who knows how to evaluate HC job. Heck, many of you (including myself) do not know to list responsibilities and obligation of football team HC...

I know many of you will down vote this comment. But, I also knows truth is painful, so I really do not care bout down votes. This is my opinion and I will defend that opinion until I will be proof wrong. That is my position!

Just because Gruden probably wasn't the answer for Green Bay, it doesn't mean that EVERY POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT CANDIDATE for McCarthy will fail. I think most of us can see a disconnect between Rodgers and McCarthy, not hatred, but a failure to work well together, at least for this year.

You might change out McCarthy and get worse, you might change and get better. Fans opinion on McCarthy, is down to where he sits on their personal sliding scale of how happy/unhappy they are with him steering the ship. I am almost midway on that scale, just tilted a bit toward letting him go, not strongly suggesting that, just leaning that way.

I absolutely DO NOT want to lose Pettine as DC no matter what happens. Either McCarthy stays, or a new head coach is told Pettine will remain DC.
If McCarthy gone means Philbin and Zook are gone, I don't see any real problem.

Man, watching the schemed pass rush is a lot of fun. On Greene's sack, the whole defense pushes/collapses the line to the left, giving Raven a free run. Also, JJones peels back out after starting to blitz, presumably to catch the back coming out, or the QB if he escapes. The Clark sack was helped by Matthews' pick on his blocker. Like Rossa said, when the Pack gets some legit outside rushers, watch out.

Pettine has a history of getting sacks from positions other than ILB. It is refreshing.

MM stated last week that Perry was not fully back from injury—a somewhat unusual statement by a HC in season. That plus how he was being used (could be clever coaching as a result) may explain some of the drop off.

McFatty should be fired cuz his plays are so bad even the other defense noes them. Cobb don;'t run fast no more we should of keeped Jordy but no TT had all control and he and McMumbles and Murfy the gap tooth ginger don't even care and need to go. they let that kid punter have a jet because his wife was pregnant. was he pergangnt? no! and the Bares got Mack and they are winners not us. everyOne is laughing at us and our 30 $MILLion quarterback holds onto the ball too long because they let Janis go and the OLIne is a sive. Why don't they get moar rushers? Perry and matthews need to be fired, and so does that guy what wears all the hair gel and stands by McBloato on the sidelines. Aarons years have been wasted because of McGordo and TT. FIRE EVERYONE!!!!!!

Certainly hope for next year. If only MM had coached better (Aaron Jones) this year, Rodgers had played better (60% completion) and Gute had more guts (allowing Mack to go to Bears, and spare me he made a good offer. Not good enough and we'll pay for years) we'd be in good position. Next year though with another draft class, release of dead weight, including MM, team should be really good,

Most coaches in the NFL would take Rodger's performance and durability in 2018 over what they currently have on the field. Case in point, the Dolphins. Rodgers is having an off year, which for him is 60% completion, 5k yards, 32 (ish) TDs and 2 picks.

Is he off his game? Yes.

Can he bounce back? Hopefully.

I'm reserving judgement on the long-term prospects of #12's ability as he continues to age, but one thing I know for certain, Mike McCarthy/Mark Murphy have wasted either all or a portion of Aaron Rodger's prime. GB should have been in the SB in 2011. Should have beat the Seaturds in 2014 NFC Champ game and should not have been embarrassed off the field in 2016 vs the Falcons.

GB gets to three SB's with Rodgers, I'm reasonably content. Three SB appearances on a franchise's 27 year run with HOF QBs is utterly embarrassing.

All those GB/MM apologists should definitely go to that website.

Just one thing really bugged me about the game. I'm, for the most part, an MM fan, but what was he thinking midway through the 2nd quarter when he went for it on 4th and two from mid-field? With an eight point lead you go for field position 100% of the time in that situation. I'm still scratching my head a day and a half later!

Saw his defense keeping the fish out of red zone territory. Also I believe that McCarthy wanted to show his team that he believed, and trusted them to win this game. We who watch this game sometimes forget, but 90% of pro football is mental. Every player out there, every single one is an elite athlete. The ones on a roster are there not only on talent, but for their ability to process information and act in a complex environment.

I agree and I don’t think it’s oversimplified.

The issue remains: Aaron Rodgers is a HOF talent and quietly carries the ego to go with it. IMO, His pride is the only thing standing between the Packers pounding the rock to balanced, clock eating wins, and forcing throws in three and outs that put undo pressure on a talented but often gassed (from repeated bail-outs) defense.
