Add Back Injury to Clifton's Woes

Add Back Injury to Clifton's Woes

Two weeks ago, head coach Mike McCarthy targeted the Dec. 3 New York Giants game as the return date for left tackle Chad Clifton.

The veteran left tackle has been sidelined since Week 5 against the Atlanta Falcons when he injured his hamstring and had to leave the game.

On Wednesday during his press conference, McCarthy officially ruled Clifton out for Sunday's Giants, indicating that Clifton has a back injury in addition to his hamstring, which is holding him back, according to Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

The Packers appear content to wait on Clifton. They've gone this far without placing him on season-ending injured reserve with no plans to do so that they've made public.

However, the depth on the offensive line is getting thinner. Right guard Josh Sitton sustained a knee injury in the most recent game against the Detroit Lions and could miss several weeks as well.

How long they can wait on Clifton and Sitton without making a roster move remains to be seen. As long as no one else gets injured, they may continue to wait on their veterans to get healthy.

McCarthy also gave a vote of confidence to Marshall Newhouse, who has filled in for Clifton at left tackle since he's been injured. He won a game ball from the team for his performance against Detroit on Thanksgiving.

In the last paragraph it's left tackle, not left guard.

Hope no OL get hurt, not sure I want to see Dominguez or Sherrod going in against the Giants DL.

5th paragraph Sitton is RG.

Newhouse has been playing really well - and improving weekly. The more he plays, the better he gets. Sherrod has all the measurables. Who knows what we have in him.

Cliffy's battled injuries at every joint for it seems like the last 10 years. It might be time to put the old vet out to pasture...
